M: Hello. Yes?

W: Hello. Is that the sales department?

M: Yes, it is.

W: Oh, well. My name is Jane Kingsbury of GPF Ltd. Um, we need some supplies for our designer office.

M: Oh, what sort?

W: Well, first of all, we need one complete new drawing board.

M: Er, DO44 or DO45?

W: Ah, I don't know. What's the difference?

M: Well, the 45 costs 15 pounds more.

W: Hmm… So what's the total price then?

M: It's 387 pounds.

W: Does that include value-added tax?

M: Oh, I'm not sure. Most of the prices do. Yes, I think it does.

W: Hmm, what are the boards actually made of?

M: Oh, I don't know. I think it's a sort of plastic stuff these days. It's white anyway.

W: Hmm, and how long does it take to deliver?

M: Oh, I couldn't really say. It depends on how much work we've got and how many other orders there are to send out, you know.

W: OK, now we also want some drawing pens, ink and rulers, and some drawing paper.

M: Oh, dear. The girl that takes orders for supplies isn't here this morning. So I can't take those orders for you. I only do the equipment you see.

W: OK, well, perhaps I ring back tomorrow.

M: So do you want the drawing board then?

W: Oh, I have to think about it. Thanks very much. I'll let you know. Goodbye.

M: Thank you. Goodbye.

Female caller 进行 self-identification,报出 name 和 company,然后用 we need 来 state the purpose of call,说明需要为 designer office 购买 supplies。Male 用 what sort 来 elicit more specific information, prompting 对方进一步 clarify needs。

接下来围绕 price、VAT inclusion、material 和 delivery time 展开 multiple question-answer exchanges。Salesperson 的 responses 显示出 uncertainty(I'm not sure, I don't know, I couldn't really say),revealing his limited product knowledge 和 inability to provide definitive answers。

这个 lengthy exchange 是主旨中 'cannot provide complete information' 的 core evidence。通过 multiple rounds of inquiry,展现了 salesperson 的 incompetence 和 Jane 的 growing uncertainty,直接导致最后 purchase 的 undecided status。

Jane 用 now also 引入 additional items list(drawing pens, ink, rulers, drawing paper),但 salesperson 立即 reveals 他的 limitation:负责 supplies orders 的 girl 不在,他 only handles equipment。

这个 segment 是主旨 'cannot process the full order' 的 direct manifestation。Salesperson 的 job scope limitation 阻止了 transaction 的 completion, forcing Jane 考虑 ring back tomorrow。这是 call 未能达成 successful outcome 的 second major obstacle(第一个是 product information 不足)。

Salesperson 用 so 来 redirect conversation,询问 Jane 是否确定要 drawing board。Jane 表示需要 think about it,用 polite language(thanks very much)decline immediate decision, promise to let him know later。

I have to think about it 是对整个 call 的 outcome summary,表明因为 incomplete information 和 partial service,她无法 make immediate purchasing decision。

最后一个 turn 是 simple goodbye exchange, male 回应 thank you 和 goodbye,这是 telephone conversation 的 standard closing formula, purely ritualistic,没有 informational content。

这个 minimal closing 为整个 inconclusive business call 画上句号,salesperson 的 thank you 显得 somewhat ironic,因为 no actual business 被 transacted。

MAIN IDEA ·

如果结尾是 commitment language(如 'I'll take it', 'confirmed')则是 successful transaction;如果是 postponement language(如 'think about it', 'ring back', 'let you know')则是 unresolved situation。

Opening 回答'what',middle 回答'how/problems',ending 回答'result'。

主旨信号词 we need some supplies P4 I'm not sure P13 I can't take those orders for you P19 I have to think about it P22

MAIN IDEA ·

A business call where Jane Kingsbury inquires about ordering a drawing board and other supplies, but the salesperson cannot provide complete information or process the full order, leaving the purchase undecided.
WORD INFERENCE ·

第二,通过与 equipment 的 comparison,我们确认 supplies 是 consumable or frequently-used items,而非 large permanent equipment。第三,从 etymology 看,'supply' 的本质是 'to fill a need',作为 noun 时自然指那些 fulfill needs 的 materials。

Oh Um Er Hmm Ah Well You know I mean

仿写: 写作 realistic dialogue 时,strategic placement 的 fillers 能够 convey character traits 和 situation dynamics。Professional character 用 fewer fillers 显示 confidence;uncertain character 用 more hesitation markers 体现 doubt。可以 combine filler + question 来 show genuine confusion:"Oh, I don't know. I think..."。 + evaluative statement" 或 "Oh, I'm not sure. + tentative answer"。

    P8 P13 P15 P17

    "I don't know" 这个 phrase 在男士的 responses 中出现了 multiple times,包括 第8段 的 "I don't know" 和 第15段 的 "I don't know",还有 "I'm not sure" (第13段) 和 "I couldn't really say" (第17段) 这些 equivalent expressions。这种 repetitive pattern of uncertainty 直接 support 文章主旨中 salesperson "cannot provide complete information" 的 core message,强调了这次 business call 的 ineffectiveness 并 foreshadow 最终的 undecided outcome。

I don't know I'm not sure I couldn't say I can't tell I have no idea I'm uncertain

仿写: 运用 semantic repetition(语义重复而非 exact wording)能够 subtly reinforce theme without being obvious。可以通过 varied expressions of same concept 来 build cumulative effect:"I don't know" → "I'm not sure" → "I couldn't say"。 仿写模版:用 three or more semantically similar expressions 分散在 dialogue 中 emphasize character trait。

    P19 P20 P21 P22

例如 第22段 "Oh, I have to think about it" 省略了 "the drawing board";第20段 "perhaps I ring back tomorrow" 省略了 "I will";第19段 "I only do the equipment you see" 省略了 "orders for"。这些 elliptical constructions 是 natural speech 的 characteristic,但在 business context 中也 contribute to ambiguity 和 incomplete communication, reinforcing 文章主旨中的 communication breakdown。

仿写: 写作 natural dialogue 时,strategic ellipsis 能 avoid stilted language。Focus on omitting subjects("[I] Think it's...")、auxiliaries("[Do you] Want the board?")和 repeated nouns("I'll let you know [about the decision]")。 代替 "Do you want X?"

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P13
Most of the prices do. Yes, I think it does.

I think I'm not sure probably maybe perhaps sort of kind of

男士说 I think it does 表面在回答 VAT 是否 included 的问题,但实际传递的 message 是他并不 确定 certain 这个关键的 pricing information,这对 business transaction 是个 red flag,因为 tax inclusion 直接影响 final cost,作为 sales department 的人却不能 confirm 这个 basic information,暗示他的 unprofessionalism 或对 product 的 unfamiliarity,这为整个对话的 outcome 即客户最终 declined purchase 埋下伏笔,因为 unreliable information 会 undermine customer confidence

    P15
Oh, I don't know. I think it's a sort of plastic stuff these days.

I don't know I can't I have no idea I'm not aware I couldn't say I'm unable to I don't have that information

男士对 drawing board material 的回答充满 uncertainty,先说 I don't know,然后用 I think 和 sort of 这些 hedging words 去 guess,表面是在 attempt to answer,实际传递的 implication 是他根本不了解自己 selling 的 product,对于 designer office 采购来说,material quality 是 important consideration,会影响 durability 和 usage experience, sales person 无法提供这个 fundamental information 显示 incompetence,进一步 erode customer trust, contribute 到最终 Jane 说 I have to think about it 的 hesitation

    P17
Oh, I couldn't really say. It depends on how much work we've got and how many other orders there are to send out, you know.

I couldn't really say It's hard to say That's difficult to answer It depends It varies I can't give you a specific answer That's not easy to determine

当 Jane 询问 delivery time 这个对 business purchase 至关重要的 information 时,男士的 I couldn't really say 表面是在解释 complexity,但实际 implication 是他们的 system 缺乏 predictability 和 organization,通过把 delivery uncertainty 归因于 workload 和 other orders,他在 shift responsibility away from himself,但这恰恰 expose 公司的 operational inefficiency,对于需要 planning 的 office supplies purchase,无法获得 even approximate delivery timeframe 是 major deterrent,这个 vague response 成为 Jane 最终 decision to delay purchase 的又一个 contributing factor

    P19
I only do the equipment you see.

I only do I just handle I only deal with That's not my area That's not my department I'm only responsible for I merely

I only do the equipment 表面是在 clarify 职责分工,但深层的 implication 是这个销售 department 的 workflow 存在 fragmentation, customer 需要跟 multiple people 才能 complete 一个 complete order,这种 departmental silos 造成 customer inconvenience,让简单的 purchasing process 变得 complicated,男士用这个 statement 来 excuse 自己无法 process complete order,但这恰恰 highlight 整个 service system 的 customer-unfriendly design,对于本就对 purchase 持 hesitant attitude 的 Jane 来说,这个 additional complexity 成为最后一根 straw,直接导致她说 I'll let you know 而非 immediate commitment

    P22
Oh, I have to think about it. Thanks very much. I'll let you know.

I have to think about it Let me think it over I need to consider I'll get back to you Let me check I'll let you know I need some time

Jane 的 I have to think about it 表面是说需要 consideration time,但结合整个 conversation context,真实 implication 是她对这次 purchasing experience 不满意,前面男士无法回答 VAT inclusion、material、delivery time 等 basic questions,加上只能 handle equipment 不能 process complete order,这些 accumulated disappointments 让她失去 confidence,I have to think about it 本质是 polite way 去 exit conversation without commitment,后面的 I'll let you know 进一步 confirm 这是 indefinite postponement 而非 genuine intention to follow up,这个 ending 体现整个对话的 core theme 即 inadequate service 导致 failed sales opportunity

  • W: Well, first of all, we need one complete new drawing board.

  • W: Hmm, and how long does it take to deliver?

  • I'll let you know.

  • He is not familiar with the exact details of the goods.

掌握后可迁移至类似的"be + 形容词 + 介词"结构(如 be interested in、be good at)。
