It is usually agreed that a German, Carl Benz, built the first motor car in 1885. It was actually a tricycle with a petrol motor at the rear. Soon, members of the Royal family and other wealthy people took up motoring as a sport. Many of the early cars had two seats. There were no petrol pumps and few garages, so every driver had to be his own engineer for the frequent breakdowns.

By 1905, cars began to look like cars of today, with headlamps, windscreen, rubber tyres and number plates. Henry Ford's Model T introduced in America in 1909 was cheaper because it was made on the assembly line. It brought cars closer towards the reach of ordinary people. With the popularity of the car, registration became a must in 1903 with the Motor Car Act. Competency tests were introduced in 1935.

Today, the legal driving age for a car in the UK is 17. You are not allowed to drive a car unsupervised until you have passed a driving test. In 1958, Britain celebrated the opening of its first motorway—the Preston Bypass. Until then, no one really understood what a motorway was, not even the laborers who were building it. The bypass hailed a new era in motor travel and was greeted with excitement and optimism. Service stations came with the motorway and the legend of the transport cafe was born. Of course, the service station has diversified greatly. But whether it's an English-cooked breakfast or a coffee and a sandwich, one thing has remained the same: the prices.

Why did every early car driver have to be his own engineer?

    • A They were required to build petrol pumps for other motorists.
    • B They needed engineering skills to obtain number plates.
    • C They had to deal with frequent mechanical failures on their own.
    • D They had to repair the roads before taking up motoring as a sport.
    • E They had to pass a competency test before driving.
    • F They were expected to carry two passengers in every car.

正确项准确改写了 every driver had to be his own engineer for the frequent breakdowns。deal with 对应处理,on their own 对应 his own, frequent mechanical failures 对应 frequent breakdowns,三个语义点完整保留。

Henry Ford's Model T more affordable

What made Henry Ford's Model T more affordable?

    • A It was designed with headlamps and a windscreen.
    • B It was introduced before the Motor Car Act.
    • C It enabled registration to become a must.
    • D It was produced on an assembly line.
    • E It was available only to wealthy people.
    • F It passed the competency tests introduced in 1935.

原文明确用 because 说明 Model T was cheaper 的原因是 it was made on the assembly line。正确项把 made 改写为 produced,保留 assembly line 这一关键生产机制,准确回答 What made 的直接原因。

What has remained unchanged at service stations despite their diversification?

    • A They still offer only English-cooked breakfasts.
    • B They continue to be built by laborers unfamiliar with motorways.
    • C They remain unavailable to drivers under seventeen.
    • D They have kept the same number of food choices.
    • E Their prices have stayed the same.
    • F They have preserved the optimism of the first motorway opening.

原文在列举 English-cooked breakfast、coffee 和 sandwich 等服务内容变化后,明确总结 one thing has remained the same: the prices。正确项以 have stayed the same 改写 has remained the same,保留 prices 这个唯一不变项,完整回应 despite their diversification。

这个 opening segment 介绍了 motor car 的 origin,1885年 Carl Benz 建造了 first motor car,实际是个 tricycle with petrol motor, early adopters 是 Royal family 和 wealthy people,他们把 motoring 当作 sport,那时 cars 通常有 two seats,没有 petrol pumps 也没什么 garages,所以 drivers 必须自己当 engineer 来处理 frequent breakdowns。

这个 developmental segment 展示了 cars 在1905年开始 look like modern cars,具备了 headlamps、windscreen、rubber tyres 和 number plates 等 features。特别重要的是1909年 Henry Ford's Model T 通过 assembly line production 降低了 cost,使 cars 向 ordinary people 靠近。随着 popularity 增长,1903年 Motor Car Act 让 registration 成为 must,1935年引入了 competency tests。

这个 contemporary segment 从 today 的 legal requirements 开始(UK driving age 是17,需要 pass driving test),然后重点描述1958年 Britain's first motorway(Preston Bypass)的 opening,这是个 milestone event。当时 nobody 真正理解 what a motorway was,包括 building 它的 laborers。The bypass 开启了 new era in motor travel,带来了 excitement and optimism。 虽然 service stations 已经 diversified greatly,但有一点 remained the same:the prices。

WORD INFERENCE ·

然后再看 context 语境,文章说这是 the first motor car 的实际形态,并且特别强调了 with a petrol motor at the rear 后部有发动机这个特征。

    P1 P2 P3

文章通过 precise dates and numbers 来构建 historical timeline,比如 1885年 Benz 制造了 first motor car,1905年 cars 开始有了 modern features,1909年 Ford's Model T 问世,1903年 registration 成为 must,1935年引入 competency tests,1958年 first motorway 开通。这些 specific years 不仅让 evolution of motor cars 变得 concrete and traceable,更让读者能 clearly grasp 汽车发展的 key milestones,强化了说明文的 chronological structure 和 factual accuracy。

    信号词 in 1885 by 1905 in 1909 in 1903 in 1935 in 1958 today

比如讲科技发展,与其说 'computers became popular',不如说 'by 1981, IBM introduced the PC; by 1990, ownership reached 15% of households'。 In [year], [event/development] occurred' 或 'By [year], [specific change] had taken place',这样能 establish clear temporal markers 并让 progression 一目了然。

    P1 P2 P3

文章用 specific instances 来 illustrate general points。比如说明 early adoption 时提到 'members of the Royal family and other wealthy people',说明 technological features 时列举 'headlamps, windscreen, rubber tyres and number plates',讲 motorway services 时提到 'English-cooked breakfast or a coffee and a sandwich'。这些 concrete examples 让 abstract concepts like 'luxury status', 'modernization', 和 'service diversification' 变得 vivid and relatable,帮助读者 visualize 汽车发展的 real-world manifestations。

信号词 such as for example including like

仿写: 问自己:what specific cases 能让 general statement 更 clear?写 'smartphones changed communication' 不如写 'smartphones changed communication—WeChat connects families, LinkedIn builds networks, and Duolingo teaches languages'。 [General statement], such as [specific example 1], [example 2], and [example 3]' 或 '[Topic] included [concrete instance]'。

    P2 P3

文章通过 before-and-after contrasts 来 highlight changes。'By 1905, cars began to look like cars of today' 对比了 early tricycles 和 modern vehicles;'Model T... brought cars closer towards the reach of ordinary people' 对比了 wealthy exclusivity 和 mass accessibility;'one thing has remained the same: the prices' 对比了 service station 的 diversification 与 price constancy。这些 comparisons 不仅 emphasize transformation,更让读者 appreciate the magnitude of progress 和 certain unchanging aspects, deepening understanding of 汽车工业的 evolution。

信号词 like unlike compared to in contrast while whereas than remained the same

仿写: 思考:what contrast 能 illuminate your point?写教育变化时,与其说 'classrooms evolved',不如说 'traditional classrooms had blackboards and textbooks; today's have smartboards and tablets'。 [Past/Item A] was/had [feature]; [Present/Item B] is/has [contrasting feature]' 或 'While [aspect A] changed, [aspect B] remained constant'。Key 是选择 meaningful points of comparison 来 serve your explanatory purpose。

    P1 P3

It was actually a tricycle with a petrol motor at the rear' 定义了 Benz's first motor car 的 essential nature;'motorway' 这个 concept 通过 'the Preston Bypass' 和随后的 description 被 clarified;'service stations came with the motorway' 界定了 new infrastructure。这些 definitions 对说明文至关重要,因为它们 establish shared understanding of key terms,确保 readers 和 writer 在 same conceptual ground 上 discuss the topic。

信号词 actually was is means refers to defined as essentially called

仿写: 问自己:what terms need clarification for readers?定义时用 'X is a [category] that [distinguishing feature]' 结构。比如 'Cryptocurrency is a digital asset that uses blockchain technology for security'。或用 descriptive approach:'The device—a rectangular screen with touch interface—revolutionized phones'。模版可以是:'[Term] was actually/essentially [category + key features]' 或 '[Term], defined as [explanation], emerged...'。Ensure your definition is both accurate and appropriately detailed。

    P1 P2 P3

将 car development 分为不同 stages(1885 invention, 1905 modernization, 1909 mass production, post-1958 motorway era),把 early car users 分为 'Royal family and other wealthy people',将 regulatory developments 分为 'registration' 和 'competency tests'。这种 categorical organization 让复杂的 automotive history 变得 structured and digestible,帮助 readers 理解不同 phases 和 aspects of development,使 information flow logically。

信号词 types of kinds of categories divided into stages phases consists of

仿写: 考虑:how can I break down this complex topic into meaningful groups?写 'social media evolved' 时,可以说 'Social media development occurred in stages: early platforms (2003-2008) focused on networking; middle period (2009-2014) emphasized sharing; current era prioritizes video content'。 [Topic] can be divided into [category 1], [category 2], and [category 3]' 或 '[Development] occurred in phases: [stage 1 + time], [stage 2 + time]...'。Ensure your categories serve the explanatory purpose 而不是 arbitrary divisions。

    P2 P3

文章引用 historical facts and legislation 作为 authoritative sources。提到 'Motor Car Act' (1903), 'competency tests' (1935), 'Preston Bypass' (1958) 等 official records and historical milestones。这些 cited materials 为说明提供 credibility and verifiability,让 readers 知道 information 并非 subjective opinion 而是 documented history。

Act introduced according to stated reported documented recorded established

仿写: 问自己:what authoritative sources 能 strengthen my explanation?与其说 'rules were introduced',不如说 'The Data Protection Act of 2018 established privacy requirements'。 According to [source/act/study], [fact]' 或 '[Event/regulation] introduced in [year] [what it did]'。或直接提及 'The [official name] established/required/mandated [specific provision]'。Key 是确保 cited material directly supports your explanatory point 且来源 credible。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
There were no petrol pumps and few garages, so every driver had to be his own engineer for the frequent breakdowns.

因果类 so therefore thus consequently as a result hence accordingly

表面上这句话只是在说 because there were no facilities, drivers had to fix cars themselves。但 implication 是:早期 motoring 是 extremely unreliable and demanding,需要车主具备 engineering skills 才能应对 frequent breakdowns。这个 subtext 对文章主旨的 value 在于:它 establishes the starting point of automobile evolution—从一个 primitive, problematic state 开始。这为后文介绍的 improvements(standardization, mass production, infrastructure development)提供了 contrast baseline,让读者理解 how far the industry has progressed。

    P2
It brought cars closer towards the reach of ordinary people.

程度渐进类 closer towards approaching moving towards getting nearer to edging towards progressing towards advancing towards

Model T made cars more affordable。但 implication 是:即使有了 assembly line production, cars were still not fully accessible to ordinary people—只是 'closer' to their reach, not actually within it。这个 subtext reveals that 汽车 democratization 是 gradual process, not instant transformation。对主旨的 contribution:它展示了 automobile evolution 的一个 critical milestone—mass production 开始 breaking down class barriers,但这个 transition 是 progressive rather than immediate。这种 nuanced understanding 丰富了文章对 automotive development 的 portrayal, showing it as complex evolution 而非 simple linear progress。

    P3
Until then, no one really understood what a motorway was, not even the laborers who were building it.

强调递进类 not even let alone much less still less even... not not so much as

Subtext 是:motorway 是 radically new concept,so unprecedented that 即使是 physically constructing it 的人也无法 conceptualize its purpose or significance。这 reveals the revolutionary nature of this infrastructure。对主旨的 value:这个 implication 强调了 1958 motorway opening 是 transformative moment in British motoring history。它不只是 new road type,而是 paradigm shift that nobody had mental framework to understand initially。这 contextualizes motorway 作为 major evolutionary milestone, comparable to earlier breakthroughs like Model T。

    P3
Of course, the service station has diversified greatly. But whether it's an English-cooked breakfast or a coffee and a sandwich, one thing has remained the same: the prices.

Of course of course naturally admittedly certainly indeed obviously

Subtext 是 ironic commentary:尽管 everything else evolved and diversified, service station prices 仍然 notoriously high—这是 negative constant in automotive history。'Remained the same' 这里不是 neutral description,而是 subtle complaint about persistent overcharging。 文章前面都在讲 progress and improvements,但结尾通过这个 ironic note 提醒读者:不是所有 aspects 都在 improving,某些 commercial practices(high prices at captive-audience locations)remain unchangingly problematic。这 adds realism and humor, preventing the narrative from being overly celebratory about automotive progress。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为客观中立( Objective narration with a touch of wry irony)。

  • excitement and optimism P3

说明文的 opening 通常是 informative statement,比如文中 'It is usually agreed that a German, Carl Benz, built the first motor car in 1885',这是在 present a fact,不是 express an opinion 也不是 report a recent event

三段分别讲 1885年起源、1905-1935发展、1958至今现状,明显的 time sequence organization,这是说明文的 typical pattern;议论文会用 claim-evidence-reasoning structure;新闻用 most important info first 的 pyramid style

文中用 'was built', 'began to look like', 'was introduced', 'became a must' 等 factual verbs 来 describe events objectively;没有 'should', 'must', 'unfortunately' 等 evaluative words;也没有 'shocking', 'just announced' 等 news urgency markers

本文通过 chronological presentation of automobile history 来 explain the development,没有 thesis statement 需要 defend,也没有 news sources 和 quotes;pure informational purpose 确认是说明文
