New York State plans to shut off the thundering waters of Niagara Falls—again. At least, the American side of the falls. This "once in a lifetime" event actually may take place twice in some folks' lives. The New York State parks system wants to turn off the falls on the American side sometime in the next two to three years to replace two 115-year-old stone bridges that allow pedestrians, park vehicles and utilities access to Goat Island.

The American side of the falls was shut off in 1969 to study the buildup of rock at the base of the falls. When that happened, people came from all over the world to see the falls turned off.

People are curious by nature. They want to see what's underneath. In fact, those who first came to have a look did see something. They found millions of coins on the bottom.

  1. P1

A Planned Shutdown for Bridge Replacement

New York State plans to temporarily shut off the American side of Niagara Falls to replace aging bridges on Goat Island.

  2. P2

The 1969 Precedent and Public Interest

The 1969 shutdown of the American falls for geological study attracted worldwide attention.

  3. P3

    Curiosity Beneath the Falls

Curiosity about the exposed bottom of the falls led visitors to discover millions of coins.

New York State next two to three years plan

What does New York State plan to do in the next two to three years?

    • A It plans to close Goat Island permanently to keep visitors away from the falls.
    • B It plans to study the buildup of rock at the base of the falls.
    • C It plans to shut off the American side of the falls in order to replace two old stone bridges.
    • D It plans to remove the coins from the bottom of the falls.
    • E It plans to build new bridges for visitors on the Canadian side of the falls.
    • F It plans to invite people from around the world to watch the falls.

    该项完整对应 lead 中的“主体—计划动作—直接目的”链条:New York State 的 plan 是 shut off the American side,工程目的则是 replace two 115-year-old stone bridges。

直接抓题干中罕见的 New York State 和带数字的 next two to three years,视觉回扫至 第1段;随后采用“动词骨架删选法”:只比较各个选项的核心谓语及其目的,保留与 plan、shut off、replace 同向的正确项。

1969 shut off

Why was the American side of Niagara Falls shut off in 1969?

    • A It was shut off so that people from all over the world could see it.
    • B It was shut off to replace two 115-year-old stone bridges.
    • C It was shut off to allow utilities access to Goat Island.
    • D It was shut off to study the buildup of rock at the base of the falls.
    • E It was shut off because millions of coins had blocked the falls.
    • F It was shut off to make the American side less dangerous for pedestrians.

该项准确保留了原文的目的结构 to study,以及研究对象 buildup of rock at the base of the falls。

What did the first people who came to look underneath the falls find?

    • A They found a buildup of rock at the base of the falls.
    • B They found two 115-year-old stone bridges under the falls.
    • C They found that the American side had been shut off again.
    • D They found park vehicles and utilities on Goat Island.
    • E They found millions of coins on the bottom.
    • F They found visitors from all over the world at the falls.

该项直接复现 found 的宾语 millions of coins,并保留地点 on the bottom,准确回答 What did ... find。 People are curious by nature 和 They want to see what's underneath 铺垫,这些句子容易使考生选择“岩石”或“下方景象”等概括说法;但题目问的是具体发现,必须回到 found 后的名词短语。

这个 opening paragraph 直接抛出了 main news event,即 New York State 计划在未来两三年内 shut off Niagara Falls 的 American side。紧接着通过 'once in a lifetime' 这个 phrase 制造 curiosity,然后揭示这个 event 其实 may happen twice,形成一个 mini-suspense。 整个 paragraph 遵循新闻报道的 inverted pyramid structure,把最重要的 who、what、when、why 都在 lead paragraph 中交代清楚。

它只用两句话完成任务:第一句 establish 了 when and why(1969 年,为了 study rock buildup),第二句描述了 public reaction(people came from all over the world)。

通过 reference 1969 年的 precedent,它不仅 proves 这种 event 确实发生过,还通过 'people came from all over the world' 这个 detail 预示了未来 event 可能产生的 public interest。

第一句 'People are curious by nature' 提供了 universal explanation,第二句 'They want to see what's underneath' 把这种 curiosity 具体化到这个 specific context。最后通过 'millions of coins on the bottom' 这个 concrete detail 来 validate 前面的 abstract statement,同时为整个 story 提供一个 memorable ending。

通过 generalize human behavior(people are curious)并提供 tangible example(millions of coins),它让 readers understand 为什么即将到来的 event 会再次引发 public interest。

MAIN IDEA ·

新闻报道遵循 inverted pyramid structure,首段通常包含 who, what, when 等核心要素,这里的 'New York State plans to shut off' 就是 main action,'in the next two to three years' 是 time marker,这种组合直接揭示了文章的 central event

首段中 'replace two 115-year-old stone bridges' 是具体的 reason,而 'This once in a lifetime event actually may take place twice' 提供了 historical context。

第二段的 'The American side of the falls was shut off in 1969' 提供了 historical precedent,这不是新的 main event,而是用来说明当前 event 的 nature 和 impact。

第三段的 'millions of coins on the bottom' 是 interesting detail 但不是 main point。 (NY plans to shut off)、什么时候(within 2-3 years)、为什么特殊(rare event, last done in 1969)、影响(attracted global curiosity),但不需要包含硬币这类 anecdotal information

主旨信号词 plans to P1 once in a lifetime P1 in the next two to three years P1 shut off P1 was shut off in 1969 P2

MAIN IDEA ·

New York State plans to temporarily shut off the American side of Niagara Falls within two to three years to replace century-old bridges on Goat Island, repeating a rare event last done in 1969 that attracted global curiosity.
WORD INFERENCE ·

从 word structure 来看,build up 的 nominal form 本身就携带了 gradual increase 的 semantic information。

这种 rhetorical strategy 不仅 highlights the rarity 和 significance of the event,更通过 playful contradiction 吸引读者的 attention,为后文解释 the historical precedent in 1969 做了 clever foreshadowing。

信号词 once in a lifetime unprecedented never before seen historic first one-time opportunity rare occasion extraordinary event unique moment

This '[popular phrase describing rarity]' event + [contradicting reality] + [explanation of why the contradiction exists]"。

    P1 P2

文章精确地提供了 two 115-year-old stone bridges 这个 specific detail,以及 1969 这个 historical date。这些 concrete numbers 不仅 establish factual foundation,更让 abstract plan 变得 tangible and credible。115-year-old 这个数字强调了 infrastructure aging 的 urgency,解释了 why the shutdown is necessary,而 1969 的 temporal reference 则为 "twice in some folks' lives" 提供了 verifiable context。

115-year-old 1969 two to three years two millions of percent approximately nearly over more than less than

[Action/Plan] + [specific number with unit] + [what the number represents] + [why this number matters]"。 The city plans to renovate three 80-year-old tunnels to accommodate modern traffic demands."

    P2

第二段用 "The American side of the falls was shut off in 1969" 提供了 crucial historical context,解释了为什么这次事件是 "twice in some folks' lives"。这个 background information 不仅 validates the earlier claim,更通过 when that happened, people came from all over the world 展示了 past public reaction,为当前计划的 potential impact 提供了 predictive reference。

信号词 in 1969 previously last time when that happened historically in the past former earlier back in

用 simple past tense 和 temporal connectors(in [year], previously, last time)来 introduce background,然后用 result clauses 或 descriptive details 来 show its relevance。 [Main event] happened before in [time]. When that occurred, [outcome/reaction], which suggests [implication for current situation]."

    P3

第三段以 "People are curious by nature. They want to see what's underneath" 这种 declarative statements 的形式,实际上 addresses an implicit question:为什么1969年的事件吸引了 global attention?虽然不是 direct question form,但这种 rhetorical move 本质上是 answering the unasked "why",引导读者理解 human psychology behind the phenomenon。紧接着的 "In fact" 和 concrete example(millions of coins)提供了 tangible evidence,将 abstract curiosity 转化为 specific discovery,强化了 inevitability of public interest in the upcoming event。

信号词 want to see curious why what how In fact The reason is This is because wonder question remains

仿写: 运用设问引导时可以采用 implicit question-answer structure:先用 human nature、common reaction 或 general truth 的 statement 暗示 underlying question,再用 specific evidence 或 examples 来 answer it。 [General human tendency/reaction]. [What this tendency leads people to want/do]. In fact, [concrete example proving this tendency]."

    P1 P2

文章开头 "New York State plans to shut off the thundering waters" 和后续的 "to replace two 115-year-old stone bridges that allow pedestrians, park vehicles and utilities access" 采用了 neutral, factual tone 来呈现 government plan。使用 plans to、wants to 这样的 intentional verbs 和 detailed purpose clauses,避免了 emotional language 或 subjective judgment。这种 objective presentation 是新闻报道的 fundamental requirement,确保 readers 获得 unbiased information to form their own opinions。同时,specific details(pedestrians, park vehicles, utilities)增强了 transparency 和 completeness。

信号词 plans to wants to will intends to aims to announces reports states according to officials say

仿写: 撰写客观描述时要选择 neutral verbs(plan, intend, aim to, announce)而非 emotive ones(demand, insist, claim),用 specific nouns 和 concrete details 替代 vague generalizations。 [Authority/Organization] + [neutral intentional verb] + [specific action] + [time frame] + to [clear purpose with concrete details]." The council plans to install 50 new streetlights along Main Avenue by June to improve pedestrian safety after dark." 关键是 let facts speak for themselves,不添加 interpretive adjectives 或 evaluative adverbs。

    P1 P2 P3

文章在 第1段 中设置了 "once in a lifetime" versus "actually...twice" 的 temporal contrast,在 第2段 和 第3段 中则形成了 expectation(studying rock buildup)versus reality(finding millions of coins)的 contrast。第一个 contrast 通过 undermining the uniqueness claim 增强了 story's intrigue,第二个通过 unexpected discovery 展示了 human curiosity 的 tangible outcome。这种 contrasting structure 不仅 creates narrative tension,更 highlights the unpredictability 和 fascinating aspects of the event, making the mundane administrative plan into an engaging story。

信号词 actually however but while in fact on the other hand conversely instead rather yet

仿写: 运用对比时要找准 contrasting points:可以是 time(then vs. now)、expectation(intended vs. actual)、scale(small vs. large)或 nature(official vs. popular)。用 transitional markers(actually, however, but, in fact, while)来 signal the shift。模版:"[Statement A establishing expectation/norm] + [Contrasting connector] + [Statement B revealing different reality] + [Explanation of the contrast's significance]." The renovation was meant to improve traffic flow, but actually attracted thousands of tourists curious about the construction process."

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
This "once in a lifetime" event actually may take place twice in some folks' lives.

转折类 actually in fact in reality however but yet though

    P2
people came from all over the world to see the falls turned off

夸张强调类 came from all over the world from all over the world countless millions of massive enormous extraordinary

通过 "came from all over the world" 这个 expression,作者 imply 1969 年的 shutdown 产生了 extraordinary global appeal。

    P3
In fact, those who first came to have a look did see something. They found millions of coins on the bottom.

In fact in fact indeed moreover furthermore what's more as a matter of fact

作者通过 "In fact" 和 "millions of coins" 这个 concrete detail,不仅 validate 了人类的 curiosity nature,更 imply 这种 rare opportunity 会 reveal unexpected discoveries。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

  • plans to P1

同类词 wants to intends to is set to aims to

  • once in a lifetime P1

同类词 so-called supposedly reportedly -a quoted claim followed by fact-check-

  • curious by nature P3

同类词 by nature naturally it's human nature to typically

  • found millions of coins P3

新闻报道的 lead paragraph 通常会立刻告诉你 what happened 或 what will happen,用 factual information 开场。 这篇文章第一句就说 'plans to shut off',这是典型的 news event。

议论文引用 historical facts 是为了 support a thesis,说明文引用历史是为了 explain a concept。这里只是告诉你 'this happened before',没有 'therefore we should' 或 'this proves that' 的逻辑推进。

这篇文章告诉你 New York State 要做什么 (shut off falls),什么时候 (next two to three years),为什么 (replace bridges),还告诉你这事以前发生过 (1969)。 没有 'In conclusion' 或 'Therefore' 这类 discourse markers,也没有 'First, second, third' 这种 sequential explanation structure。
