Some music inspires you to move your feet, some inspires you to get out there and change the world. In any case, it's fair to say that music moves people in special ways.

If you're especially into a piece of music, your brain does something called Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), which feels to you like a sting in your brain.

It turns out that ASMR is pretty special. According to a recently published study in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease, the part of your brain responsible for ASMR doesn't get lost to Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's tends to put people into layers of confusion, and the study confirms that music can sometimes actually lift people out of the Alzheimer's haze and bring them back to (at least a likeness of) normality … if only for a short while. ASMR is powerful stuff!

This phenomenon has been observed several times but rarely studied properly. One of the most famous examples of this is the story of 92-year-old Henry Dryer, who comes out of dementia(痴呆) while listening to songs from his youth.

Jeff Anderson, associate professor in Radiology at the University of Utah and contributing author on the study, says "In our society, the diagnoses of dementia are taxing resources to the maximum. No one says playing music will be a cure for Alzheimer's disease, but it might make the symptoms more manageable, decrease the cost of care and improve a patient's quality of life."

  1. P1

    The Power of Music

Music affects people in powerful and varied ways.

  2. P2

    Music and ASMR

Deep engagement with music can trigger ASMR in the brain.

  3. P3

    Why Music Helps Alzheimer's Patients

Preserved ASMR responses may allow music to temporarily ease Alzheimer's symptoms.

  4. P4

    A Striking Dementia Case

Henry Dryer's case illustrates the observed but insufficiently studied effect of music on dementia.

  5. P5

    Music as Supportive Care

Music is not a cure, but it may make Alzheimer's care more manageable and improve patients' lives.

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 music music moves people

What is suggested about the ways in which music moves people?

    • A It mainly encourages people to dance.
    • B It always motivates people to change the world.
    • C It can influence people in different and distinctive ways.
    • D It affects only people who are trained musicians.
    • E It produces the same physical response in everyone.
    • F It is valuable only when it is used as medical treatment.

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 especially piece of music

What may happen when a person is especially absorbed in a piece of music?

    • A The person will permanently lose the ability to feel music.
    • B The person is likely to be cured of Alzheimer's disease.
    • C The brain stops responding to sensory stimulation.
    • D The brain may produce ASMR, experienced as a sting-like sensation.
    • E The person begins to remember songs from childhood.
    • F The person becomes unable to distinguish normal sounds.

    该项保留了原文的条件结果:brain does ASMR,并把 feels like a sting 准确改写为 sting-like sensation。

What did the cited study find about the brain area associated with ASMR?

    • A It is the first brain area to be damaged by Alzheimer's.
    • B It can completely reverse Alzheimer's disease.
    • C It becomes more active only after patients receive medication.
    • D It is responsible for putting people into confusion.
    • E It does not get lost to Alzheimer's disease.
    • F It is absent in people without Alzheimer's disease.

该项直接对应研究结论:responsible for ASMR 的大脑部分 does not get lost to Alzheimer's。 障碍在于题干用 brain area associated with ASMR 改写了 part of your brain responsible for ASMR,考生需要先完成研究对象的同义识别。

Henry Dryer story dementia

What does the story of Henry Dryer show?

    • A Dementia patients can be permanently cured by any kind of music.
    • B Only people over ninety can respond to music from their youth.
    • C Songs from youth usually cause dementia in older people.
    • D The phenomenon has been thoroughly studied by radiologists.
    • E Henry Dryer recovered his normal memory without listening to music.
    • F A person with dementia may emerge from that state while listening to songs from their youth.

该项保留了案例中的核心关系:人物处于 dementia 状态,在 listening to songs from their youth 时呈现出 comes out of dementia 的变化。

Jeff Anderson care quality of life

According to Jeff Anderson, what role can music play in dementia care?

    • A It may help manage symptoms, reduce care costs, and improve patients' quality of life.
    • B It is a proven cure for Alzheimer's disease.
    • C It can eliminate the need for professional caregivers.
    • D It should replace all medical treatments for dementia.
    • E It mainly prevents dementia diagnoses in society.
    • F It guarantees a complete return to normality for every patient.

    该项按原文的并列逻辑完整覆盖三项潜在价值:make symptoms more manageable、decrease the cost of care、improve a patient's quality of life。

MAIN IDEA ·

这篇文章首段用 'music moves people in special ways' 这个 general claim 暗示后文会 explain 音乐如何 affect people,为主旨 music triggers ASMR 做了 preparation

这篇文章第二段直接 define 了 ASMR 这个 technical term,并 describe 它的 effect ('feels like a sting in your brain')。

第三段的 'recently published study' 和 'the study confirms' 是 strong signals,揭示了 ASMR 与 Alzheimer's 的 connection ('doesn't get lost to Alzheimer's')。这个 finding 是主旨的 core content,说明 music can alleviate dementia symptoms

第五段 expert quote 强调了 'symptoms more manageable' 和 'improve quality of life',这是将 ASMR finding 转化为 practical application。结尾段的 'might make symptoms manageable' 呼应主旨中的 'alleviate symptoms' 和 'improve quality of life',提供了 practical context

  6. 主旨必须 integrate 三个 components:what (ASMR response)、how (remains intact, activates preserved regions)、why it matters (alleviate symptoms, improve life)。

主旨信号词 special P1 It turns out P3 confirms P3 responsible for P3 might P5 improve P5

MAIN IDEA ·

Music triggers ASMR in the brain, a response that remains intact in Alzheimer's patients. Research shows music can temporarily alleviate dementia symptoms by activating preserved brain regions, offering potential to improve patients' quality of life and reduce care costs.

然后,music 可以 lift people out of the Alzheimer's haze,这个 lift out of 的动作说明 haze 是一种需要被摆脱的 negative state。接着,同一句中的 bring back to normality 形成了对比,haze 对应着与 normality 相反的 abnormal state。

从 degree 的角度,to the maximum 这个 phrase 告诉我们影响程度是 extreme 的。

这三个 dimensions 共同确认:manageable 指的是'可控制的、可应对的',在 medical context 中特指 symptoms 变得 easier to deal with。

    P4

作者在第四段 specifically cite 了 92-year-old Henry Dryer 这个 concrete case,他在 listening to songs from his youth 时能够 come out of dementia。

信号词 for example for instance such as take... for example a case in point to illustrate one notable example consider the case of

比如本文讲 ASMR 的 preservation in Alzheimer's,作者没有 stop at theory,而是引入了 Henry Dryer 这个 具体人物。 This phenomenon has been observed... One of the most [notable/famous/striking] examples is [specific case with details], who/which [demonstrates the point].'

    P2

在第二段,作者 precisely define 了 ASMR 这个 technical term:'your brain does something called Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), which feels to you like a sting in your brain'。

信号词 is defined as refers to means is known as called termed is namely that is to say

注意 structure:先给 formal name(可以加括号注释),然后用 'which is/means/refers to' 等 connector 来 explain。本文用 'feels to you like' 来 describe subjective experience,让 abstract concept 更 accessible。 [Subject] does something called [Term] ([Full Name if acronym]), which [defining characteristics or description].'

    P3 P5

第三段 cite 了 'a recently published study in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease',第五段 quote 了 'Jeff Anderson, associate professor in Radiology at the University of Utah and contributing author on the study' 的话。

信号词 according to research shows studies indicate experts suggest says states reports as noted in published in findings from

仿写: 当你 make 一个 significant claim 时,问自己:有没有 research, expert opinion, or published data 可以 back this up?注意 citation 的 complete information:journal name, study details, 或 expert's credentials (title, institution)。本文既用了 journal article 又用了 direct quote from expert,这是 dual support strategy。 According to [source with credentials], [claim or finding]. [Expert name], [title] at [institution], says "[quote]".'

    P3

第三段中 'music can sometimes actually lift people out of the Alzheimer's haze and bring them back to (at least a likeness of) normality' 这句话是对前面 scientific finding 的 interpretive explanation。它把 technical statement(ASMR doesn't get lost to Alzheimer's)转化成了 more vivid and comprehensible language(lift out of haze, bring back to normality),帮助读者 understand 这个 discovery 在 real-world context 中的 practical meaning。

信号词 in other words that is namely to put it another way more specifically what this means is essentially in essence

然后用 more concrete or vivid language 来 rephrase。本文先说 'part of your brain doesn't get lost'(technical),然后 explain 实际效果是 'lift out of haze'(metaphorical and tangible)。 [Statement of fact/finding]... This means/In other words, [more accessible explanation with concrete imagery or practical implications].'

    P4

第四段提到 '92-year-old Henry Dryer',这个 specific age 让 example 更加 concrete and credible。

信号词 percent times years old approximately nearly over more than less than around

仿写: 在 describe cases, effects, or phenomena 时,问自己:能否用 specific number 来 replace vague description?比如不说 'an elderly man' 而说 '92-year-old man',immediately 增加了 precision。 [Number/percentage]-[unit] [subject], [who/which demonstrates the point with specific details].'

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
Some music inspires you to move your feet, some inspires you to get out there and change the world. In any case, it's fair to say that music moves people in special ways.

In any case in any case regardless nevertheless nonetheless at any rate in any event

表面上作者在描述 music 的 various effects,但通过 'in any case' 这个让步转折,言外之意是:无论 music 如何 diverse in its impacts,它对人的 special influence 是 undeniable 的。

    P3
It turns out that ASMR is pretty special. According to a recently published study in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease, the part of your brain responsible for ASMR doesn't get lost to Alzheimer's.

It turns out that it turns out that surprisingly interestingly unexpectedly contrary to belief as it happens

表面是在陈述 ASMR 的 special characteristic,但 'it turns out that' 的 implication 是:这个 discovery 是 unexpected 且 significant 的。

    P4
This phenomenon has been observed several times but rarely studied properly.

对比类 but rarely yet seldom although...not often while...infrequently though...scarcely but not adequately however...hardly

更深层的 meaning 是:尽管 observed multiple times(说明 phenomenon 是 real and reproducible),却依然 lack proper study,这反映了 research community 对此 attention 不足或 methodological challenges。

    P5
No one says playing music will be a cure for Alzheimer's disease, but it might make the symptoms more manageable, decrease the cost of care and improve a patient's quality of life.

No one says...but no one says...but not a cure but may not solve...however won't eliminate...yet not a solution but doesn't mean...still

表面是 professor 在 cautiously stating music 不是 cure,但通过 'but it might' 引出的三个 concrete benefits,言外之意是:尽管不能 cure, music therapy 的 practical value 依然 considerable 和 multifaceted。更深的 implication 是:在 incurable disease 如 Alzheimer's 的 context 中,能够 make symptoms manageable, reduce care costs, 和 improve quality of life 这些 outcomes 已经是 highly valuable interventions。这种 cautious yet positive framing 的 implication 还包括:这是 evidence-based, realistic approach,不是 overpromising,因此更 credible 和 implementable。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为积极支持( Optimistic and supportive of music therapy's potential)。

在这篇 expository article 里,作者引用了 "recently published study"、"The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease" 以及 "associate professor" 的观点。关键是作者用这些 authoritative sources 来支持 "music can lift people out of Alzheimer's haze" 这个 hopeful finding,而不是用来 question 或者 criticize music therapy。这种 use of evidence 的方式清楚地显示出作者是在 building a case for 音乐疗法的 potential benefits。

在 final paragraph,作者通过 expert 的口说出 "No one says playing music will be a cure",这是一个 realistic qualification,但紧接着用 "but it might make symptoms more manageable, decrease cost, and improve quality of life" 来 balance 这个 limitation。这种 "not a cure, but helpful" 的 framing 体现了 cautiously optimistic attitude,而不是 overly enthusiastic 或者 dismissive。

这篇文章从头到尾都在 building a case:开篇 establish music's power,中间用 neuroscience 和 clinical examples 来 substantiate,结尾用 expert voice 来 balance optimism with realism。这种 coherent narrative arc 说明作者的 stance 是 genuinely supportive,而不是 merely reporting facts in neutral way。如果作者 truly neutral,会 equally present 反对音乐疗法的 evidence 或者 spend more time on limitations。

  • special P1

  • inspires P1

  • powerful P3

"Powerful stuff!"

说明文的 opening 通常会introduce 一个现象或概念,比如这里的 music moves people,而议论文会直接 state a position,新闻报道则会用 5W1H 的方式report 一个事件

说明文的核心是 explain,这里出现了 ASMR 这个scientific term 并解释 what your brain does,议论文会focus on 说服读者接受观点,新闻报道则concentrate on 报道事实本身而不深入explain mechanisms

说明文用 examples 是为了clarify 和illustrate 概念,比如Henry Dryer 的case 是用来demonstrate ASMR 现象,而议论文的examples 是用来prove a point,新闻报道的examples 则是为了provide details of an event

说明文有distinct organizational pattern,从introducing topic 到explaining how it works 再到illustrating with examples,最后discussing implications,这个完整的explanatory arc 区别于议论文的argumentative structure 和新闻报道的inverted pyramid structure
