Birds are famous for carrying things around. Some, like homing pigeons, can be trained to deliver messages and packages. Other birds unknowingly carry seeds that cling to them for the ride.

Canadian scientists have found a worrisome, new example of the power that birds have to spread stuff around. Way up north in the Canadian Arctic, seabirds are picking up dangerous chemicals in the ocean and delivering them to ponds near where the birds live.

Some 10,000 pairs of the birds, called fulmars, a kind of Arctic seabird, make their nests on Devon Island, north of the Arctic Circle. The fulmars travel some 400 kilometers over the sea to find food. When they return home, their droppings end up all around their nesting sites, including in nearby ponds.

Previously, scientists noticed pollutants arriving in the Arctic with the wind. Salmon also carry dangerous chemicals as the fish migrate between rivers and the sea. The bodies of fish and other meat-eaters can build up high levels of the chemicals.

To test the polluting power of fulmars, researchers collected samples of deposit from 11 ponds on Devon Island. In ponds closest to the colony, the results showed there were far more pollutants than in ponds less affected by the birds. The pollutants in the ponds appear to come from fish that fulmars eat when they're out on the ocean.

People who live, hunt, or fish near bird colonies need to be careful, the researchers say. The birds don't mean to cause harm, but the chemicals they carry can cause major problems.

  1. P1

    Birds as Carriers

Birds are naturally capable of transporting materials over distances.

  2. P2

    A Worrisome Discovery

Arctic seabirds transport dangerous ocean chemicals to nearby ponds.

  3. P3

    How Fulmars Transfer Pollution

Fulmars carry ocean-derived materials back to ponds through their droppings.

  4. P4

    Pollution Pathways in the Arctic

Pollutants already reach the Arctic and accumulate through natural food chains.

  5. P5

    Evidence from Pond Samples

Pond samples confirm that fulmars increase pollution near their colonies.

  6. P6

    A Warning for Nearby Communities

People near bird colonies should avoid risks from bird-carried chemicals.

SELF CHECK ·

What is true about the way some birds carry things?

    • A They carry packages only when they migrate long distances.
    • B They are trained to transport seeds between nesting sites.
    • C They may carry materials either deliberately or without realizing it.
    • D They normally drop the objects they carry into nearby ponds.
    • E They can carry chemicals only after eating fish.
    • F They use seeds as messages for other birds.

正确项把两个 examples 提炼为 deliberately 与 without realizing it 的对照,完整覆盖了 can be trained 和 unknowingly 所体现的两类情况。

Canadian scientists

What worrisome discovery have Canadian scientists made?

    • A Arctic winds have recently begun carrying pollutants to Canada.
    • B Seabirds are dying after being exposed to chemicals in ponds.
    • C Chemicals in Arctic ponds are produced by local bird colonies.
    • D Seabirds can transfer dangerous ocean chemicals to ponds near their homes.
    • E Canadian ponds have become safer because birds remove chemicals from them.
    • F Scientists have trained seabirds to deliver samples from Arctic ponds.

该项准确保留 seabirds、dangerous chemicals、ocean 和 ponds near where the birds live 四个事实节点,并将 picking up 和 delivering 合理概括为 transfer。

What happens when fulmars return home after traveling over the sea to find food?

    • A They make their nests about 400 kilometers out at sea.
    • B They carry pond water back to their colony.
    • C Their droppings remain only inside their nests and never reach ponds.
    • D They remain at sea after finding food and do not return to the colony.
    • E Their droppings end up around their nesting sites, including in nearby ponds.
    • F They move their nesting sites to the Arctic Circle after each trip.

正确项直接对应 return home 之后的结果,准确保留 droppings、around their nesting sites 和 including in nearby ponds 三层信息。

What had scientists previously noticed about pollutants in the Arctic?

    • A Fish create dangerous chemicals as they migrate from rivers to the sea.
    • B Meat-eaters remove chemicals from their bodies by moving between habitats.
    • C Bird droppings are the only known way for pollutants to reach the Arctic.
    • D Chemicals travel from ponds to the ocean through salmon.
    • E Researchers transport pollutants to the Arctic for testing.
    • F Pollutants can arrive in the Arctic with the wind.

该项忠实复现 scientists previously noticed 的内容,保留 pollutants、arrive in the Arctic 和 with the wind 三个事实要素。

  5. 第 5 段 定位词 ponds closest to the colony

What did the results show about ponds closest to the colony?

    • A Ponds closest to the bird colony contained far more pollutants than less affected ponds.
    • B All 11 ponds contained exactly the same amount of pollutants.
    • C Ponds farthest from the colony had the highest pollution levels.
    • D Pollution levels depended mainly on the number of researchers collecting samples.
    • E The samples proved that pond chemicals came only from the wind.
    • F Fish in the ponds had fewer chemicals than fish in the ocean.

What do the researchers advise people near bird colonies to do?

    • A They should stop all seabirds from returning to their nesting sites.
    • B They should be careful when living, hunting, or fishing near the colonies.
    • C They should use bird droppings as evidence of safe water.
    • D They should feed fulmars only fish from local ponds.
    • E They should assume that birds deliberately spread harmful chemicals.
    • F They should collect samples from every pond before fishing.

正确项准确转述 need to be careful,并保留 living、hunting、fishing 以及 near the colonies 的适用范围。

MAIN IDEA ·

Canadian researchers discovered that Arctic seabirds called fulmars are transporting dangerous ocean pollutants to freshwater ponds near their nesting colonies through their droppings, creating potential health risks for people living or working in these areas.
WORD INFERENCE ·

最后,文中描述的所有behaviors——making nests、traveling over the sea、producing droppings——都完全consistent with鸟类的typical characteristics。

所有线索converge:colony = birds的聚居区。

从narrative flow看,birds的droppings进入ponds(第3段),然后scientists从ponds取deposit samples(第5段)——这个temporal and causal sequence strongly suggests deposit包含这些accumulated biological materials。最convincing的evidence是deposit中pollutants的concentration pattern——离colony越近,deposit里pollutants越多,这perfectly consistent with如果deposit是accumulated droppings and sediments的话。

Some Other For example Such as like Typically Commonly Usually Often Traditionally

[Common phenomenon] is well-known. Some [example A], while others [example B]. Now, [researchers/scientists] have found [new discovery] that [connects to the familiar pattern]."

    P1 P2

通过 "unknowingly" vs "worrisome" 的 contrast,文章从 harmless seed spreading 转向 dangerous chemical transportation。这个 sharp turn 用 "new example" 标记,配合 "Way up north" 的 geographic emphasis,强化了问题的 severity 和 unexpectedness。

信号词 worrisome however but yet new example in contrast on the other hand whereas while unlike surprisingly unexpectedly

结构可以是:"While [positive/neutral scenario], [negative discovery] reveals [surprising reality]." 关键是用 transition markers 如 "but, however, yet, new example" 等明确 signal the shift。在 word choice 上注意 emotional loading:一边用 neutral/positive terms(unknowingly),另一边用 negative/alarming terms(worrisome, dangerous),amplify the contrast effect。

10,000 pairs" 说明 scale of impact,"400 kilometers" 展示 birds' range 和 pollutant transportation distance,"11 ponds" 表明 research sample size。这些 figures 支撑主旨中 researchers' discovery 的 scientific rigor,让 "dangerous pollutants" 和 "potential health risks" 不只是 vague claims 而是 evidence-based conclusions。

10,000 400 11 Some approximately about nearly over more than up to around roughly

仿写: Incorporate numbers strategically:不是 every detail 都需要 quantification,而要选择能 illustrate scale, distance, sample size 或 magnitude of impact 的 key metrics。模版:"Some [specific number] [subjects] [action] [specific measurement]." Some 5,000 residents rely on [resource] within [X kilometers/miles]." Mix different types of measurements(quantity, distance, concentration)来 build comprehensive picture。

    P4 P5

使用 scientific terminology("fulmars", "pollutants", "deposit", "samples")和 neutral verbs("collected", "showed", "appear to come from")来 maintain objectivity。特别是 "appear to come from" 这种 cautious phrasing 体现 scientific rigor——不 overstate conclusions。这种 neutral tone 让 research findings 更 credible, support 主旨中 "researchers discovered" 的 authority,同时 "need to be careful" 的 measured warning 比 alarmist language 更 effective in scientific context。

信号词 collected samples researchers results showed appear to previously noticed tested analyzed observed measured indicated suggested found discovered

仿写: 采用 "researcher as observer" 的 stance。用 passive voice 突出 actions 和 findings 而非 actors:"Samples were collected" rather than "We collected samples"。选择 neutral verbs:"showed, indicated, revealed, demonstrated" 而不是 "proved, confirmed"。用 hedging language 表达 appropriate caution:"appear to, seem to, suggest, indicate, may, could"。 [Researchers] collected [data] from [sources]. The results showed [finding]. The [phenomenon] appears to [explanation]." Avoid emotionally charged adjectives in the findings section。

    P6

虽然没有 direct quotes,但 "the researchers say" 这个 attribution 将 final warning 明确 connect 到 scientific authority。这个 indirect reporting 传达了 expert opinion 的 weight,特别是 "The birds don't mean to cause harm, but..." 这种 balanced statement 既 acknowledge bird innocence 又 emphasize real danger。这直接 serve 主旨的 "potential health risks" 和 "people living or working in these areas" 部分,将 scientific discovery 转化为 practical warning。

信号词 say according to warn caution show indicate state explain suggest reveal

模版:"[Experts/Researchers] say/warn/caution that [finding/implication]." 或 "According to [source], [statement]." 在 final paragraph 使用 attribution 特别有效,因为它 lends authority to conclusions and recommendations。平衡 statement 可以用 "while X, Y" structure:"The [subjects] don't [negative intent], but [actual consequence]."

    P5

虽然没有 explicit questions,但文章通过 logical progression 建立 implicit questions and answers。第3段 提出 fulmar behavior(problem setup),第4段 提供 context("Previously..." establishes pattern),第5段 回答 "how bad is it?"("To test..." provides evidence),第6段 回答 "so what?"(implications)。这种 question-answer flow 特别在 "To test the polluting power" 这个 purpose statement 中明显,它 implicitly asks "Do fulmars really spread pollutants?" 然后 immediately provides methodology and answer。这个 structure 支持主旨的 logical development from discovery to implication。

To test To investigate To understand To determine To examine To verify To explore Previously The results showed This means Therefore Consequently

仿写: 用 purpose statements 来 establish implicit questions:"To [verify/test/understand] [phenomenon], [researchers] [methodology]." 这 immediately raises question in reader's mind("What did they find?")并 sets up answer。使用 sequential markers 建立 logical flow:"Previously... Now... To test this... The results showed... Therefore..." 每个 transition 都在 implicitly answering preceding question。 [Background]. To investigate [aspect], [method]. [Finding]. This means [implication]." 这种 structure 自然 guides reader through question-discovery-significance chain。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
Some, like homing pigeons, can be trained to deliver messages and packages. Other birds unknowingly carry seeds

这个 implication 对 main thesis 的 value 在于它 frames the problem 为一个 natural but concerning process,而不是简单的 pollution story。

    P2
Canadian scientists have found a worrisome, new example

在 scientific reporting 中,researchers 通常 avoid strong language,所以当 scientists' finding 被描述为 'worrisome',it implies 这个 discovery 的 severity 已经 serious enough to warrant concern。对于 main thesis 而言,这个 word choice creates an expectation:接下来描述的 pollutant transportation 不是一个 minor environmental observation,而是一个 potentially harmful process that affects ecosystems and humans。这为后文的 warning(people need to be careful)提供了 justified tone。

    P3
Some 10,000 pairs of the birds, called fulmars

Some 10,000 pairs some 10,000 as many as up to approximately around nearly

10,000 pairs 意味着至少 20,000 只 individual birds, each making multiple trips 并 producing droppings。Combined with '400 kilometers' 的 foraging range,这 implies a vast area 的 ocean pollutants 正在被 concentrated 到一个相对 small nesting area。对 main thesis 而言,这个 numerical detail transforms abstract concern into measurable risk:这不是 few birds 造成的 minor contamination,而是一个 large-scale biological pump 在持续 delivering pollutants。这 justifies 后文对 people living nearby 的 warning,因为 exposure risk 的 scale 是 significant 的。

    P4
Previously, scientists noticed pollutants arriving in the Arctic with the wind. Salmon also carry dangerous chemicals

Previously previously formerly traditionally historically in the past until now

通过 listing known pollution pathways(wind, salmon),文章 implicitly suggests fulmars represent a third, previously overlooked mechanism。这对 main thesis 的 value 在于它 frames the discovery 为 filling a knowledge gap:Arctic pollution 的 sources 比之前 understood 的更 complex 和 multifaceted。这个 context 也 implies seabirds 这个 vector 可能被 underestimated, making the finding 'worrisome' 更 justified。

    P5
there were far more pollutants than in ponds less affected by the birds

程度副词强调类 far more much higher significantly greater considerably more substantially higher dramatically increased markedly elevated

这个 'far more' 的 implication 是 establishing causation between fulmars and pollution。在 scientific context 中,这样的 strong comparative language implies 统计上 significant difference, not just random variation。 Far more' 也 implies 污染的 concentration gradient 是 steep 的,meaning birds' impact 是 localized but intense,这 justifies 对 people 'near bird colonies' 的 specific warning。这个 quantitative evidence transforms 'worrisome discovery' from hypothesis into documented environmental reality。

    P6
The birds don't mean to cause harm, but the chemicals they carry can cause major problems

否定意图委婉表达类 don't mean to unintentionally not deliberately without intending inadvertently despite not trying to

通过说 birds 'don't mean to cause harm',文章 implies 这是 natural process gone wrong due to human-created ocean pollution, not birds' fault。但 'but' 后的 'major problems' 强调 consequences are serious regardless of intent。对 main thesis 而言,这个 diplomatic framing serves practical purpose:它 encourages precautionary behavior (people need to be careful) without creating antagonism toward birds or oversimplifying complex environmental issue。最终这个 implication reinforces 文章的 core message:seabird-mediated pollution transport 是 unintended but significant environmental pathway requiring human awareness and response。

  • worrisome P2

  • dangerous P2

  • need to be careful P6

同类词 should be cautious must take care ought to watch out have to be wary

  • cause major problems P6

同类词 pose a serious threat bring severe consequences lead to harm trigger significant risks

  • don't mean to cause harm P6

同类词 don't mean to unintentionally not deliberately inadvertently without intending to

第2段 明确提到 'Canadian scientists have found',这是典型的 news reporting 标志,呈现的是 a new finding。议论文会提出 thesis statement,说明文会定义 topic,而新闻报道会 report an event or discovery。

    第3段、第4段、第5段 都在呈现 research details:具体的 numbers ('10,000 pairs', '400 kilometers')、research methods ('collected samples from 11 ponds')、findings ('far more pollutants')。这些不是为了 prove a point,而是为了 report what scientists did and found。

第6段 说 'People who live, hunt, or fish near bird colonies need to be careful',这是基于 reported findings 提出的 practical implication。不是在 concluding a persuasive essay,也不是在 wrapping up an explanation,而是在告诉读者 the significance of this news。

没有 author's opinion (议论文特征),也没有 step-by-step explanation of how something works (说明文特征)。
