In the past 12 months, Nigeria has suffered from a shrinking economy, a sliding currency, and a prolonged fuel shortage. Now, Africa's largest economy is facing a food crisis as major tomato fields have been destroyed by an insect, leading to a nationwide shortage and escalating prices.

The insect, Tutaabsoluta, has destroyed 80% of farms in Kaduna, Nigeria's largest tomato producing state, leading the government there to declare a state of emergency. The insect, also known as the tomato leaf miner, devastates crops by feeding on fruits and digging into and moving through stalks. It reproduces incredibly quickly, breeding up to 12 generations per year if conditions are favorable. It is believed to have originated in South America in the early 1900s, and later spread to Europe before crossing over to sub-Saharan Africa.

In Nigeria, where tomatoes are a staple of local diets, the insect's effects are devastating. Retail prices for a handful of tomatoes at local markets have risen from $0.50 to $2.50. Farmers are reporting steep losses and a new $20 million tomato-paste factory has halted production due to the shortages.

Given the moth's ability also to attack crops like pepper and potatoes, Audu Ogbeh, Nigeria's minister of agriculture, has warned that the pest may "create serious problems for food security" in the country. Ogbeh says experts are investigating how to control the pest's damage and prevent its spread, which has gone largely unchecked until now.

Despite being the continent's second-largest producer of tomatoes, Nigeria is dependent on $1 billion worth of tomato-paste imports every year, as around 75% of the local harvest goes to waste thanks to a lack of proper storage facilities. A further reduction in local supplies is yet another unwelcome setback to the industry.

  1. P1

A Tomato Crisis amid Economic Hardship

Nigeria’s economic troubles have been worsened by an insect-driven tomato crisis.

  2. P2

    The Destructive Tomato Leaf Miner

Tuta absoluta has devastated Kaduna’s tomato farms because of its destructive and fast-spreading nature.

  3. P3

The Economic Cost of the Tomato Shortage

The tomato shortage has raised consumer prices and caused major losses across Nigeria’s food industry.

  4. P4

A Growing Threat to Food Security

Nigeria is trying to control a pest that could pose a wider threat to food security.

  5. P5

Structural Weaknesses in Nigeria’s Tomato Industry

The tomato crisis has deepened Nigeria’s existing problems of waste and import dependence.

What has directly contributed to Nigeria's current food crisis?

    • A A prolonged national fuel shortage.
    • B The continuing decline of the Nigerian currency.
    • C The destruction of major tomato fields by an insect.
    • D Nigeria's dependence on imported tomato paste.
    • E The suspension of a new tomato-paste factory.
    • F The lack of proper tomato storage facilities.

Kaduna state of emergency

Why did the Kaduna government declare a state of emergency?

    • A Because the pest breeds up to 12 generations every year.
    • B Because the pest had spread from Europe to Nigeria.
    • C Because tomato retail prices had risen fivefold nationwide.
    • D Because Tuta absoluta had destroyed 80% of farms in the state.
    • E Because a tomato-paste factory had stopped production.
    • F Because 75% of the local harvest was being wasted.

该项准确对应原文的量化事实和因果连接:destroyed 80% of farms 直接 leading to 政府宣布 state of emergency。80% 是关键限定,体现灾情严重程度;in the state 将范围限定在 Kaduna,而非整个 Nigeria。

What change in local tomato prices is reported?

    • A They fell from $2.50 to $0.50 for a handful of tomatoes.
    • B They rose from $0.50 to $20 per box of tomatoes.
    • C They rose by 75% at local markets.
    • D They remained at $0.50 because supplies were stable.
    • E They rose from $0.50 to $2.50 for a handful of tomatoes.
    • F They increased after the government imported $1 billion in tomato paste.

    该项完整复现了价格变化的三个必要要素:rose 表示方向,from $0.50 to $2.50 表示起止值,for a handful of tomatoes 表示计价单位。

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 experts address the pest problem

What are experts doing to address the pest problem?

    • A They are warning that food security may face serious problems.
    • B They are expanding tomato storage facilities across the country.
    • C They are restarting the halted tomato-paste factory.
    • D They are importing tomatoes from South America.
    • E They are allowing the pest to spread unchecked.
    • F They are investigating how to control the damage and prevent the pest's spread.

该项精准对应 experts are investigating 的进行中动作,并保留两个并列目标:control the damage 与 prevent the spread。 障碍在于 warned that 和 may create serious problems for food security 同样显眼,但前者是部长的警告,后者是未来风险,均非专家当前实施的措施。

Why does Nigeria rely heavily on tomato-paste imports despite its high tomato production?

    • A Because around 75% of the local harvest goes to waste due to inadequate storage facilities.
    • B Because Nigeria produces too few tomatoes for its local diets.
    • C Because the tomato leaf miner was first discovered in Europe.
    • D Because farmers have raised retail prices to $2.50.
    • E Because the government has banned local tomato processing.
    • F Because the pest can also attack pepper and potatoes.

around 75%、local harvest、goes to waste 和 inadequate storage facilities 构成完整因果链。

这个 opening paragraph 开门见山地 present 了 Nigeria 的 economic hardships,包括 shrinking economy 和 sliding currency,然后用 now 这个 temporal marker 引出 food crisis 这个 new development, specifically 是 tomato fields 被 insect 摧毁导致的 nationwide shortage 和 price escalation

这个 paragraph 从 scientific angle 来 elaborate on 那个 insect, providing 了 specific name(Tutaabsoluta)、destruction scale(80% of farms)、government response(state of emergency)、destructive mechanism(feeding on fruits 和 moving through stalks)、reproduction rate(12 generations per year)以及 geographical origin and spread pattern

作为 explanatory paragraph,它 provide 了 technical details 来 support the lead 中提到的 crisis,用 factual information(percentage、scientific name、biological behavior)来 establish credibility,并通过 historical context(originated in South America)来 explain 问题的 broader context,这是新闻 body 的典型 elaboration function

    这个 paragraph 把 focus 从 pest biology shift 到 economic consequences,specifically in Nigeria 的 context。它 highlight 了 tomatoes 作为 staple 的 importance,用 concrete figures(price rising from $0.50 to $2.50)来 quantify the impact,并 mention 了对 farmers(steep losses)和 industry(factory production halt)的 devastating effects

作为 impact-focused paragraph,它把 abstract problem(insect damage)translate 成 tangible consequences,用 specific data 和 real-world examples 来 demonstrate 为什么这个 crisis matters。这种 humanizing the story through economic lens 是新闻写作中 engage readers 的常用 technique

这个 paragraph 通过 minister of agriculture 的 voice 来 escalate the concern,指出 pest 不仅 attack tomatoes 还能 target pepper and potatoes,用 authoritative warning 'create serious problems for food security' 来 raise the stakes,并 mention 了 ongoing investigation into control and prevention,暗示问题 has gone largely unchecked

这个 paragraph 作为 forward-looking assessment,不仅 report 当前的 damage 还 project future risks,用 official source(minister)来 add authority and urgency。它把 crisis 从单一作物问题 elevate 到 broader food security threat,这种 broadening the scope 是新闻中 build narrative momentum 的手法

这个 closing paragraph 用 'despite' 引出 paradox:Nigeria 作为 continent's second-largest producer 却 dependent on $1 billion worth of imports,然后 explain 这个 contradiction(75% local harvest goes to waste due to lack of storage facilities),最后用 'yet another unwelcome setback' 来 contextualize 当前 crisis within systemic problems

作为 contextualizing conclusion,这个 paragraph 把 immediate crisis(pest damage)place 在 larger structural failures(inadequate infrastructure)的 framework 里,reveal 了 underlying vulnerabilities。这种 ending with broader context 是新闻写作中 provide depth and perspective 的常见 technique,让 readers understand 这不只是 isolated incident

MAIN IDEA ·

当 minister of agriculture 农业部长发出 food security warning 粮食安全警告,或 government 政府 declares state of emergency 宣布紧急状态时,这些 institutional responses 机构响应表明问题已上升到 national-level concern 国家层面关切,直接证明这是 major crisis 而非 minor incident 小事件。

当文章呈现 individual level(farmer losses)→ market level(price increase from $0.5 to $2.5)→ industrial level(factory shutdown)→ national level(food security threat) 这种 cascading impacts 级联影响时,说明这不是 isolated incident 孤立事件,而是 systemic crisis 系统性危机。

主旨信号词 food crisis P1 destroyed P1 devastating P2 state of emergency P2 serious problems for food security P4 nationwide P1

MAIN IDEA ·

Nigeria faces a severe food crisis as the tomato leaf miner insect has destroyed 80% of tomato farms in the largest producing state, causing nationwide shortages, price surges, and threatening food security amid existing economic challenges.

First,从 immediate context 看,tomato shortage 造成的 dramatic impact 暗示其 essential role。

综合来看,escalate 表示 rapid and significant increase。

First, causal logic 告诉我们 shortage 这种 severe condition 会导致 production 无法 proceed,所以 halt 必然是 stop completely 而非 partial reduction。

从 immediate context, unwelcome 和 another 定性了 setback 为 repeated negative occurrence。从 thematic context,第5段 罗列的 multiple challenges 构成了 setback 的 concrete manifestations——这些都是 preventing industry from moving forward。从 word structure,set-back 的 literal meaning 与 progress reversal 的 figurative meaning 完美 align。

这种 layering of crises 的手法让读者意识到 tomato shortage 不是 isolated incident,而是 compound the existing challenges,从而 amplify 主旨中的 severity 和 urgency。

In the past Previously Over the years Historically Until now For months Recently

建议使用 present perfect tense (has suffered) 来 emphasize 这些 problems 的 ongoing nature。仿写模版:In the past [时间], [地点] has suffered from [问题1], [问题2], and [问题3]. Now, [主体] is facing [核心问题].

    P2 P3 P5

    文章多处运用 specific figures:80% of farms destroyed、12 generations per year、price surge from $0.50 to $2.50、$20 million factory、$1 billion imports、75% waste。

仿写: 在描述 crisis impact 时,要 layer different types of data:percentage (80%)、monetary figures ($0.50 to $2.50)、capacity numbers (12 generations)。注意 mix macro data (national level: $1 billion) 和 micro data (individual level: price of tomatoes),这样能 connect with 不同层面的 readers。仿写模版:[具体数据] of [对象] have been [影响],leading to [后果数据] and [连锁数据].

    P2

第2段 通过 scientific terminology (Tuta absoluta, tomato leaf miner) 和 biological details (feeding on fruits, digging into stalks, breeding patterns) 提供了 neutral, factual account。 通过 trace the pest's geographical spread (South America → Europe → Africa),作者用 objective narrative 构建了 problem 的 historical trajectory, support 主旨中 crisis 的 legitimacy。

The insect It The pest This The phenomenon

Adopt 'it does X by doing Y' 的 structure 来 explain mechanisms。Include geographical or historical tracking (originated in X, spread to Y) 来 show progression。避免 loaded words like 'terrible' 或 'horrifying',让 severity 通过 facts 自然 emerge。 It is believed to have [起源].

    P5

第5段 通过 juxtaposition 制造 ironic contrast:Nigeria 作为 Africa's second-largest tomato producer,却 dependent on $1 billion imports,同时 75% local harvest goes to waste。 A further reduction' 这个 phrase 强调了 compounding nature,呼应主旨中的 'yet another setback',showing crisis 的 cumulative damage。

Despite Although However Yet While In contrast Paradoxically Ironically

使用 'Despite being X' 或 'Although X, yet Y' 的 structures 来 set up contrast。Combine impressive statistics with disappointing outcomes 来 amplify irony。用 'further' 或 'yet another' 这类 words 来 emphasize cumulative failures。仿写模版:Despite being [积极事实], [主体] is [消极现实], as [解释原因]. A further [问题] is yet another [定性] to [领域].

    P4

第4段 引入 minister Audu Ogbeh 的 direct quote, warning pest 'may create serious problems for food security'。这个 authoritative voice 将 crisis 从 agricultural issue 升级为 national security concern, align with 主旨中的 'threatening food security'。

信号词 has warned says stated announced noted emphasized according to quoted as saying

Use reporting verbs like 'warned', 'stated', 'acknowledged' 来 frame the quote's tone。

    P3

第3段 通过 concrete examples 和 ground-level impact 展现 crisis:retail prices 的 specific jump、farmers' steep losses、factory halting production。'where tomatoes are a staple of local diets' 这个 clause 解释了 why this matters,将 economic data 与 human necessity 连接。

Retail prices Farmers are reporting Factory has halted

仿写: 列举 specific affected parties (consumers, farmers, businesses) 和 their concrete losses。用 price comparisons 和 operational disruptions (factory halted, stores closed) 作为 tangible indicators。Include a contextual statement (X is essential because Y) 来 explain why these impacts matter。仿写模版:In [地点], where [背景重要性], the [问题]'s effects are [定性].

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
In the past 12 months, Nigeria has suffered from a shrinking economy, a sliding currency, and a prolonged fuel shortage. Now, Africa's largest economy is facing a food crisis

Now now furthermore moreover in addition on top of that to make matters worse

作者通过'now'这个 seemingly simple word,实际在 conveying Nigeria 正处于 multiple crises 的 vulnerable state。前面 list 了三个 existing problems (shrinking economy, sliding currency, fuel shortage),然后用'now'引入 food crisis,这个 implicit meaning 是:国家已经 struggling 够了,yet another blow 来了。

    P2
has destroyed 80% of farms in Kaduna, Nigeria's largest tomato producing state, leading the government there to declare a state of emergency

80% 75% 90% majority vast majority nearly all most

80%这个 figure 配合'largest producing state'和'state of emergency',作者的 underlying message 是这场 crisis 已经到了 catastrophic level,不是 manageable problem。

    P2
It reproduces incredibly quickly, breeding up to 12 generations per year if conditions are favorable

情态强化类 incredibly extremely remarkably exceptionally devastatingly alarmingly shockingly

用'incredibly'来 describe reproduction speed,作者的 hidden message 是这个 pest 不只是 current threat,而是有 exponential growth potential, situation 可能 spiral out of control。这个 implication 对 main thesis 的 contribution 是 explaining 为什么 quick action 如此 critical,为什么 minister 会 warn about'serious problems for food security'。它 suggests 如果不 immediately address, problem 会 multiply geometrically。这种 breeding capacity 的 emphasis 也 justifies 文章的 alarm tone 和 calls for urgent intervention。

    P3
Retail prices for a handful of tomatoes at local markets have risen from $0.50 to $2.50

    对比数据类 from $0.50 to $2.50 from...to... rose from...to... increased from...to... jumped from...to... surged from...to... compared to

这个 five-fold price increase 的 implicit message 是 tomatoes 已经从 affordable staple 变成 luxury item for many Nigerians。 对 main argument 的 significance 在于 demonstrating 这不只是 agricultural crisis,而是 humanitarian concern —— it's about food security 和 people's ability to afford essential food。这个 concrete example 让 abstract concept of'food crisis'变得 tangible 和 relatable。

    P3
a new $20 million tomato-paste factory has halted production due to the shortages

反差对比类 new recently built just opened newly established modern state-of-the-art latest

强调'new'和'$20 million'的 underlying message 是:这不只是 halting old facilities,而是 modern investment 也无法 function,显示 crisis 的 comprehensive nature。Implication 是 economic loss 是 severe 的(fresh capital 被 wasted),而且 undermines future development —— 谁还会 invest 如果连 new facility 都 immediately fail?

    P4
Given the moth's ability also to attack crops like pepper and potatoes

扩展警示类 also as well too in addition similarly likewise not only...but also

用'also'来 mention pepper and potatoes 的 hidden meaning 是:tomato crisis 可能只是 beginning,整个 vegetable sector 都 vulnerable。这个 implication 对 article's central argument 至关重要 —— 它 justifies minister 的'serious problems for food security'warning, shows 这不是 exaggeration。如果 pest can spread to other staples,那么 national food supply 的 multiple pillars 都 threatened, crisis 会从 inconvenience 升级到 survival issue。

    P4
prevent its spread, which has gone largely unchecked until now

委婉批评类 largely unchecked until now largely unchecked gone unnoticed with little oversight inadequately monitored received limited attention until now

'Largely unchecked until now'这个 seemingly neutral phrase 的 real implication 是:authorities 没有 properly monitor 或 respond to this threat earlier,导致 crisis escalated to current catastrophic level。这个 subtext 对 main argument 的 function 是 adding accountability dimension —— 不只是 natural disaster,还有 human failure in prevention。 这个 implicit criticism 也 raises questions about whether current response 会 adequate, adding another layer of concern to the overall thesis。

    P5
Despite being the continent's second-largest producer of tomatoes, Nigeria is dependent on $1 billion worth of tomato-paste imports every year

Despite despite although even though in spite of while whereas

对 main thesis 的 contribution 是 contextualizing current crisis within broader systemic issues —— pest 只是 exposed existing vulnerabilities。 它 transforms article from simple crisis report to systemic critique。

    P5
around 75% of the local harvest goes to waste thanks to a lack of proper storage facilities

数字震撼类 around 75% 75% three-quarters majority most nearly all vast amount

这个 staggering figure 对 article's argument 的 impact 是 devastating —— 它 shows current pest crisis is hitting already deeply flawed system。这个 subtext 暗示 crisis 是 man-made problems meeting natural disaster,而且 reveals 为什么'further reduction'会是'yet another unwelcome setback'。它 transforms narrative from'bad luck with pest'to'systemic failure meeting natural challenge',给 entire article 更 profound critical dimension。

    P5
A further reduction in local supplies is yet another unwelcome setback to the industry

累积疲劳类 yet another one more another additional further still more even more

'Yet another unwelcome setback'这个 phrase 的 hidden message 是:系统已经 dealing with too many problems,每个 new blow 都可能是 tipping point。这个 implication 对 concluding the article 非常重要 —— 它 circles back to opening paragraph 的 multiple crises, creates bookend effect, reinforcing main thesis。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

  • suffered P1

  • devastates P2

  • steep losses P3

同类词 halted plummeted collapsed ground to a halt

  • warned P4

同类词 cautioned raised alarm flagged concerns sounded the alarm

  • unwelcome setback P5

同类词 further blow added burden compounding the crisis yet another setback

    新闻报道的 lead paragraph 必须开门见山地 deliver key information,而议论文会先 present a viewpoint 或 raise a question,说明文则会 introduce a concept 或 define a subject。这篇文章第一段就 reports a developing crisis,符合 news reporting 的 inverted pyramid structure。

这篇文章充满了 concrete statistics 和 specific locations like Kaduna,这是 news reporting 的 signature。

议论文中的作者会直接 express their own views,说明文的作者会以 omniscient narrator 的身份 explain knowledge。但新闻报道的作者必须保持 neutral 并 attribute claims to sources,像这里用 Ogbeh says 来 introduce the warning,而不是作者自己 making the claim。

这篇文章完美 demonstrates 所有 news reporting 的 hallmarks:它 opens with a crisis announcement, uses extensive factual details like percentages 和 dollar amounts, quotes government officials,并且 consistently emphasizes the current 和 ongoing nature of the problem。相比之下,如果这是议论文,作者会 argue whether the government response is adequate;如果是说明文,会 explain how pests generally affect agriculture。但这篇只是 reporting what is happening。

  • In the past 12 months P1 即时性时间词 Now has suffered is facing
