Pasta is no longer off the menu, after a new review of studies suggested that the carbohydrate can form part of a healthy diet, and even help people lose weight. For years, nutritionists have recommended that pasta be kept to a minimum, to cut calories, prevent fat build-up and stop blood sugar shooting up.

The low-carbohydrate food movement gave birth to such diets as the Atkins, Paleo and Keto, which advised swapping foods like bread, pasta and potatoes for vegetables, fish and meat. More recently the trend of swapping spaghetti for vegetables has been championed by clean-eating experts.

But now a systematic review and analysis of 30 studies by Canadian researchers found that not only does pasta not cause weight gain, but three meals a week can help people drop more than half a kilogram over four months. The reviewers found that pasta had been unfairly demonized(妖魔化) because it had been lumped in with other, more fat-promoting carbohydrates.

"The study found that pasta didn't contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat," said lead author Dr. John Sievenpiper. "In weighing the evidence, we can now say with some confidence that pasta does not have an adverse effect on body weight outcomes when it is consumed as part of a healthy dietary pattern." In fact, analysis actually showed a small weight loss contrary to concerns. Perhaps pasta can be part of a healthy diet.

Those involved in the clinical trials on average ate 3.3 servings of pasta a week instead of other carbohydrates, one serving equaling around half a cup. They lost around half a kilogram over an average follow-up of 12 weeks.

  1. P1

Pasta Returns to the Healthy Menu

A new review challenges the long-held belief that pasta should be limited for health reasons.

  2. P2

    The Rise of Anti-Carb Diets

Popular diet trends have promoted replacing pasta and other carbohydrates with lower-carb foods.

  3. P3

    Research Clears Pasta's Name

Canadian researchers found that pasta may support modest weight loss and has been unfairly blamed for weight gain.

  4. P4

    Expert Confirmation of Pasta's Benefits

The lead researcher confirms that pasta is weight-neutral or slightly beneficial within a healthy diet.

  5. P5

    The Trial Results in Numbers

The trials showed modest weight loss when moderate portions of pasta replaced other carbohydrates.

What had nutritionists traditionally advised about pasta?

    • A They urged people to eat it three times a week.
    • B They regarded it as the best food for controlling blood sugar.
    • C They recommended keeping it to a minimum.
    • D They advised replacing vegetables with pasta.
    • E They believed that it helped prevent fat build-up.
    • F They considered it harmful under every dietary pattern.

该项准确对应 keep pasta to a minimum,完成了 advised 的宾语内容转换:keeping it to a minimum 与原文意思完全等值。 障碍在于原文随后列出 cut calories、prevent fat build-up 和 stop blood sugar shooting up;这些是建议背后的目的,不应被误选为建议本身。

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 low-carbohydrate diets encourage people to do

What did the low-carbohydrate diets encourage people to do?

    • A Replace vegetables, fish and meat with bread, pasta and potatoes.
    • B Avoid all vegetables in favor of fish and meat.
    • C Eat more spaghetti together with vegetables.
    • D Swap bread, pasta and potatoes for vegetables, fish and meat.
    • E Limit fish and meat to reduce calorie intake.
    • F Consume only foods promoted by clean-eating experts.

该项完整保留原文的 swapping 关系:被替换的是 bread, pasta and potatoes,替代物是 vegetables, fish and meat。

最高效的非常规做法是把原文与选项都压缩成箭头:bread/pasta/potatoes → vegetables/fish/meat。

Why did the reviewers believe pasta had been unfairly demonized?

    • A It caused people to gain more than half a kilogram in four months.
    • B It was consumed less than three times a week in the trials.
    • C Clean-eating experts had prohibited it from healthy diets.
    • D The Canadian researchers had failed to review enough studies.
    • E It had been grouped with other, more fat-promoting carbohydrates.
    • F It increased body fat when eaten with vegetables.

该项准确对应 had been lumped in with other, more fat-promoting carbohydrates。grouped with 对应 lumped in with, more fat-promoting carbohydrates 保留了原文的比较限定和错误归类这一因果核心。

Dr. John Sievenpiper under what condition

According to Dr. John Sievenpiper, under what condition does pasta avoid an adverse effect on body weight?

    • A When it completely replaces all other carbohydrates.
    • B When it is eaten only once every three weeks.
    • C When it is served with fish and meat.
    • D When people follow a strictly carbohydrate-free diet.
    • E When it leads to immediate weight loss.
    • F When it is consumed as part of a healthy dietary pattern.

该项直接对应 when it is consumed as part of a healthy dietary pattern,准确回答了 under what condition。 障碍在于原文先说 pasta did not contribute to weight gain,后面才以更严谨的表述限定 healthy dietary pattern;命题人借此检验考生是否读到限定语。

  5. 第 5 段 定位词 clinical trials average amount each week

What was the average amount of pasta consumed by participants each week in the clinical trials?

    • A About 3.3 servings of pasta a week.
    • B About half a cup of pasta a week.
    • C About half a kilogram of pasta a week.
    • D Twelve servings of pasta a week.
    • E Three servings of pasta a month.
    • F More than half a cup at every meal.

该项逐项对应 on average ate 3.3 servings of pasta a week:about 保留 average 所含的近似性,3.3 对应数值,servings of pasta 对应对象,a week 对应频率单位。

这样可绕开 half a cup、half a kilogram、12 weeks 的数字干扰;与 weekly servings 三元组合完全匹配的正确项即为答案项。

WORD INFERENCE ·

第二,从 contrast 角度,pasta 本身 not fat-promoting,但和 fat-promoting carbohydrates 被同样对待,体现了 lumped in with 的"不加区分"特征。

首先,从 semantic repetition 看,第4段 的 not have an adverse effect 是对 第3段 的 not cause weight gain 的 restatement,说明 adverse effect 等同于 weight gain 这种 negative outcome。其次,从 contrast 看,actually showed weight loss contrary to concerns 这个 fact 与 adverse effect 形成 opposition,进一步确认 adverse 是 negative 的含义。

开篇用 "no longer off the menu" 和 "for years" 建立了 dramatic shift,将过去 nutritionists 长期 recommend 的 minimize pasta 策略与现在 new review 的发现形成 stark opposition。

信号词 no longer for years but now however contrary to used to in contrast on the other hand whereas while instead

可以采用 "no longer" "used to... but now" "for years... however" 这类 transitional phrases 来 signal the contrast。具体 template:"[Something] is no longer [old status], after [new development] suggested that [contrary finding]. For years, [authority figures] have [old recommendation], to [old reasoning]. But now [new evidence] found that [surprising discovery]."

通过 tracing the genealogy of anti-pasta sentiment,文章增强了 subsequent findings 的 credibility 和 newsworthiness。

信号词 gave birth to movement trend more recently for years historically traditionally background context led to resulted in

仿写: 写 background 时要先 identify readers' likely knowledge gap,然后 fill it strategically。使用 general-to-specific pattern:先提 broader movement 或 trend,再 narrow down to specific examples。可以用 "gave birth to" "has been championed by" 这类 dynamic verbs 来 describe developments,避免 static listing。Template:"The [broader movement/trend] gave birth to such [specific examples] as [A], [B] and [C], which [characteristic action]. More recently [recent development] has been [action] by [agents]."

第三段的 "30 studies","three meals a week","half a kilogram over four months" 提供了 study scope 和 findings 的 specificity。第五段更 detailed:"3.3 servings of pasta a week","half a cup","half a kilogram","12 weeks"。这些 precise figures transform abstract claims into tangible reality,让 "modest weight loss" 这个 finding 变得 measurable 和 verifiable。

信号词 studies on average approximately around equaling over found that showed analysis review servings weeks months

将 numbers 与 tangible references 结合,比如 "half a cup" 比 "approximately 100 grams" 更 relatable。使用 "on average" "around" 这类 qualifiers 来 maintain scientific accuracy without excessive precision。Template:"Those involved in [study] on average [action] [specific quantity with unit] instead of [alternative], one [unit] equaling around [relatable measure]. They [result] around [specific outcome] over an average [time period]."

    P4

第四段 extensively uses direct quotation from lead author Dr. John Sievenpiper,这是 journalistic practice 中的 gold standard。Quote 分为两部分:首先 summarize findings("pasta didn't contribute to weight gain"),然后 provide authoritative interpretation("we can now say with some confidence")。 特别是 "with some confidence" 这种 qualified statement 显示了 scientific caution,让 reporting 更 trustworthy。Author's own comment "Perhaps pasta can be part of a healthy diet" 作为 after-quote reflection,巧妙地 echo 了 expert opinion 同时 maintain journalistic voice。

信号词 said noted explained stated according to commented pointed out emphasized added concluded remarked

仿写: 选择 quotes 时要 look for statements that combine findings with interpretation。 使用 attribution phrases("said" "noted" "explained")来 introduce quotes,并 include source's credentials("lead author" "Dr.")来 establish authority。可以 break long quote into digestible chunks, interweaving with reporter's context。Template:"[Finding summary],' said [title] [name]. 'In [process], we can now say with [qualifier] that [interpretation].' In fact, [additional evidence]. Perhaps [measured conclusion]."

    P1 P3 P4 P5

文章通篇 maintain neutral, factual tone,避免 emotional language 或 subjective judgments。第三段的 "systematic review and analysis" 和 "Canadian researchers" 提供了 methodological transparency。描述 findings 时用 "found that" "showed" 这类 neutral reporting verbs,而不是 "proved" "demonstrated" 这类 stronger claims。即使在描述 pasta being "unfairly demonized" 时,也是 attributing 这个 judgment to reviewers' findings,而不是 reporter's opinion。这种 objectivity 是 credible science journalism 的 hallmark,让读者 form their own conclusions based on evidence presented。

信号词 found that showed suggested indicated revealed demonstrated according to researchers study analysis review evidence

仿写: 写作时始终 specify information source,用 "researchers" "study" "analysis" 作为 subjects of sentences。使用 neutral reporting verbs:"found" "suggested" "showed" "indicated" 而不是 "proved" "confirmed"。当 reporting controversial points(like "demonized"),要 attribute them explicitly。避免 first-person perspective 和 emotional adjectives。Template:"[Research entity] found that [factual claim]. The [study type] [action verb] that [finding], [qualifying context]. [Researchers] [neutral verb] [interpretation]."

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
For years, nutritionists have recommended that pasta be kept to a minimum

For years For decades Traditionally Historically Long-held Conventional wisdom It has long been believed

作者用 for years 这个 temporal marker 来暗示长期以来的 nutritional advice 可能存在问题。

    P2
The low-carbohydrate food movement gave birth to such diets as the Atkins, Paleo and Keto

隐喻类 gave birth to spawned bred generated proliferated into mushroomed into gave rise to

    P3
pasta had been unfairly demonized because it had been lumped in with other, more fat-promoting carbohydrates

Lumped in with other carbohydrates 进一步暗示 pasta 有其 unique properties,不应该和其他 more problematic carbs 一概而论。

    P4
we can now say with some confidence that pasta does not have an adverse effect

模糊限制语 with some confidence appears to suggests that tends to may to some extent relatively

Lead author 使用 with some confidence 这个 hedging expression,暗示研究结果虽然 convincing 但仍承认 scientific inquiry 的 inherent limitations。这个 implied caution 反而增强了 findings 的 credibility,因为它 shows intellectual honesty 而非 overconfident claims。对于 article's thesis,这个 nuanced stance 很重要,它让 readers 信任这不是 sensational claim,而是 evidence-based but appropriately qualified conclusion。Contrary to concerns 进一步暗示结果 surprising but solid。

    P5
They lost around half a kilogram over an average follow-up of 12 weeks

近似量词类 around approximately roughly about nearly close to in the region of

用 around 和 on average 这些 approximation markers,作者在 present research findings 时 carefully manage expectations,暗示 weight loss 效果虽然 real 但 modest。Half a kilogram over 12 weeks 是 statistically significant 但 not dramatic,这个 implied modesty 很重要,因为它 prevent readers 从 thinking pasta is a magic weight-loss food,而是 support 文章的 nuanced thesis:pasta can be part of healthy diet 而不是 weight loss miracle。这种 balanced presentation 增强了 article's credibility 和 scientific soundness。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

这里用 'no longer' 暗示了 reversal,而 'even help' 则 suggest unexpected positive outcome,这些都是 supportive stance 的 signals。

在 scientific reporting 中,author's selection of quotes 和 absence of opposing views 是 attitude 的 strong indicator。这篇文章 exclusively present supportive evidence,没有 include nutritionists 反对的 voice 或 limitations of the study,说明作者 align with 这个 positive conclusion。

当 journalist 用 emotional or judgmental language 来 describe 一方的 treatment of 某个 subject,这是 clear attitude marker。'Unfairly demonized' 不只是 report a fact,而是 making an evaluation——作者 explicitly side with pasta,认为它 received unfair criticism。这种 value-laden vocabulary 直接 expose editorial position。

News report 的 structural choices reveal attitude through how information is layered。这篇文章把 negative historical context 放在前面作为 foil,然后用 'But now' 来 introduce turning point,接着用 research findings 和 expert quotes 来 reinforce the positive message,最后以 cautiously optimistic conclusion 收尾。

  • no longer off the menu P1

No longer' 这个 negative + reversal 的结构 particularly effective 在 creating positive impression。

同类词 back on the table makes a comeback returns to favor regains acceptance rehabilitated

  • even help people lose weight P1

用 'even' 这个 intensifier 来 highlight unexpected positive benefit,超越了 'not harmful' 到达 'actively beneficial' 的 level。

同类词 even help actually in fact surprisingly contrary to expectations

  • unfairly demonized P3

同类词 unjustly vilified wrongly blamed mistakenly condemned falsely accused improperly stigmatized

  • with some confidence P4

这个 phrase 来自 expert quote,但作者 choose 这个 specific quote 是因为它 conveys scientific credibility while expressing certainty。'With some confidence' 在 academic context 中 actually quite strong,表示 evidence is robust。作者 selecting this assertive statement 而不是 more cautious alternatives 显示 alignment with positive conclusion。

同类词 with reasonable certainty confidently state can now say evidence supports data confirms

  • In fact P4

它 signals 作者要 present something that reinforces or exceeds previous claims。在这里 following 'In fact' 的是 'small weight loss',进一步 support pasta's benefits beyond just being neutral。

Actually Indeed As a matter of fact What's more Moreover

  • Perhaps pasta can be part of a healthy diet P4

虽然 'Perhaps' 看似 tentative,但在 accumulated positive evidence 之后 使用,这个 hedged conclusion actually functions as cautiously optimistic endorsement。在 journalistic style 中,ending with 'perhaps' after strong evidence 是 professional way 来 support a claim without appearing dogmatic,反而让 conclusion 更 credible 和 reasonable。

    第1段 直接 present 了 'a new review of studies suggested',这是典型的 news peg(新闻由头)。议论文会先 establish a position 或 provide context;说明文会 define concepts 或 explain mechanisms。新闻报道则是 lead with the news。

议论文会用这些信息来 build an argument;说明文会系统地 classify or explain。而新闻报道用 background 是为了 highlight why the new finding matters,制造 news angle。

第3段 提到 'systematic review and analysis of 30 studies by Canadian researchers',并 report specific findings like 'three meals a week' 和 'half a kilogram over four months'。议论文可能 cite evidence 但会 interpret it to support a claim;说明文会 focus on mechanisms。新闻报道则是 neutrally presenting what researchers discovered。

议论文作者会 paraphrase others' ideas 来 support their own argument;说明文很少使用 quotes。

第5段 详细说明 'ate 3.3 servings of pasta a week'、'one serving equaling around half a cup'、'lost around half a kilogram over 12 weeks'。这些 precise operational details 是 news reporting 的 characteristic。议论文不需要这种 granular detail;说明文会 focus on process explanation 而非 specific trial parameters。

    这篇文章完整呈现了 news reporting 的 prototypical structure:newsworthy finding (第1段) → contextual background (第2段) → research details with attribution (第3段) → expert quotes (第4段) → specific implementation data (第5段)。这种 multi-layered presentation 既不是 linear argumentation(议论文的 thesis-driven logic),也不是 systematic explanation(说明文的 conceptual framework),而是 fact-based reporting with journalistic objectivity。
