Dietary guidelines form the basis for nutrition advice and regulations around the world. While there is strong scientific consensus around most existing guidelines, one question has recently stirred debate: should consumers be warned to avoid ultra-processed foods?

Two papers published today in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition outline the case for and against using the concept of ultra-processed foods to help inform dietary guidelines beyond conventional food classification systems. The authors, Carlos Monteiro of the University of São Paulo and Arne Astrup of Novo Nordisk Foundation, will discuss the issue in a live virtual debate August 14th during NUTRITION 2024 LIVE ONLINE.

The debate centers around a system developed by Monteiro and colleagues that classifies foods by their degree of industrial processing, ranging from unprocessed to ultra-processed. The system defines ultra-processed foods as those made using sequences of processes that extract substances from foods and alter them with chemicals in order to formulate the final product. Ultra-processed foods are characteristically designed to be cheap, tasty, and convenient; examples include soft drinks and candy, packaged snacks and pastries, ready-to-heat products, and reconstituted meat products.

Studies have linked consumption of ultra-processed foods—which are packed high in salt, sugar, and fat—with weight gain and an increased risk of chronic diseases, even after adjusting for the amount of salt, sugar, and fat in the diet. While the mechanisms behind these associations are not fully understood, Monteiro argues that the existing evidence is sufficient to justify discouraging consumption of ultra-processed foods in dietary recommendations and government policies.

  1. P1

A New Debate in Nutrition Science

Introduces ultra-processed foods as a newly controversial topic in otherwise well-established dietary guidelines

它establishes了这不是fringe concern而是legitimate scientific question,因为它occurs within context of otherwise strong consensus。 通过positioning ultra-processed foods为exception to established guidelines,段落creates了narrative tension, making readers wonder:what makes this topic so contentious? 这种strategic ambiguity drives readers forward into subsequent paragraphs, where具体的debate details will unfold。首段essentially transforms了一个potentially dry scientific topic into a compelling story with stakes。

  2. P2

    Two Scientists Take Opposing Sides

Introduces the formal academic debate structure through two opposing papers and named experts

这个paragraph serves as crucial bridge between首段的problem setup和后续段落的detailed explanation。它通过introducing "two papers"和"for and against"structure, directly materializes文章主旨中的"debate"概念。段落strategically names具体experts (Monteiro from São Paulo, Astrup from Novo Nordisk Foundation),这些institutional affiliations add geographic和organizational diversity, strengthening impression of genuine scientific controversy。Live debate的mention creates temporal urgency, suggesting readers are witnessing real-time scholarly discourse。这个paragraph essentially transforms首段的abstract question ("should consumers be warned?") into concrete academic confrontation, making subsequent detailed arguments feel grounded in actual scholarly exchange rather than journalist's construction。

  3. P3

    What Exactly Are Ultra-Processed Foods?

Explains the classification system and defines ultra-processed foods through technical criteria and familiar examples

这个paragraph plays indispensable educational role within article structure。它addresses文章主旨中"processing-based warnings"的核心concept by explaining what "processing-based"actually means。通过systematically defining ultra-processed foods (technical processes) 然后providing tangible examples (soft drinks, candy, ready-to-heat products),段落ensures readers have concrete understanding before encountering arguments about policy implications。This grounding is strategic:debate about whether to warn consumers只有当consumers和policymakers clearly know what category they're discussing时才meaningful。段落also subtly introduces Monteiro's perspective by attributing classification system to him, setting up his later argument。The examples particularly powerful because they're ubiquitous in modern diet, making readers realize debate affects their daily choices, thus heightening personal stake in controversy。

  4. P4

Evidence Supports Warnings, But Gaps Remain

Presents evidence of health risks beyond nutritional content and Monteiro's argument for immediate policy action despite incomplete understanding

这个closing paragraph delivers payoff for previous setup by presenting actual substantive argument in debate。它directly engages文章主旨中的central question about"whether current evidence justifies"warnings。段落strategic structure moves from evidence (studies showing harm) through acknowledged limitation (incomplete mechanistic understanding) to explicit policy recommendation (discourage consumption)。这个progression reveals Monteiro's reasoning:他acknowledges uncertainty但argues evidence already sufficient for action。Phrase"even after adjusting for salt, sugar, and fat"是particularly powerful because it challenges conventional nutrient-focused approach,supporting文章主旨中的"processing-based warnings"concept。段落's placement of Monteiro's position without immediately presenting Astrup's counter-argument creates expectation of response,典型的journalistic technique to maintain reader engagement。Though article ends before presenting opposing view fully, this paragraph establishes clear stakes:should policy be precautionary (act on available evidence) or wait for mechanistic certainty? This frames exact controversy文章主旨describes。

What question has recently sparked debate over dietary guidelines?

    • A Whether nutrition advice should replace government regulations worldwide.
    • B Whether most current dietary guidelines lack scientific support.
    • C Whether consumers should be advised to avoid ultra-processed foods.
    • D Whether consumers should avoid all foods containing sugar and fat.
    • E Whether food companies should formulate new nutrition regulations.
    • F Whether dietary guidelines should focus only on conventional food classifications.

正确项准确保留了原文的 modal question,即 should consumers be warned to avoid,并将 warned to avoid 合理同义改写为 be advised to avoid。

What question has recently sparked debate?

Who will take part in the live virtual debate on August 14th?

    • A Representatives of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
    • B Nutrition regulators from around the world.
    • C Food manufacturers who produce ready-to-heat products.
    • D Carlos Monteiro and Arne Astrup.
    • E Only Carlos Monteiro of the University of São Paulo.
    • F Arne Astrup and the developers of the classification system.

原文先用 The authors 引出 Carlos Monteiro 和 Arne Astrup,随后明确说明 they will discuss the issue in a live virtual debate;代词 they 的指代对象正是这两位作者。

According to the classification system, what is a defining feature of ultra-processed foods?

    • A They are simply foods with high levels of salt, sugar, and fat.
    • B They are foods that remain close to their unprocessed form.
    • C They are products designed mainly to be expensive and nutritious.
    • D They are limited to soft drinks, candy, and packaged pastries.
    • E They are formulated through sequences of processes that extract food substances and alter them with chemicals.
    • F They are foods classified solely by their convenience to consumers.

正确项忠实概括了定义中的 sequences of processes、extract substances from foods、alter them with chemicals 和 formulate the final product 四层信息。

Monteiro available evidence justifies

What does Monteiro believe the available evidence justifies?

    • A Banning every food high in salt, sugar, or fat.
    • B Concluding that ultra-processed foods directly cause chronic diseases.
    • C Removing salt, sugar, and fat from all dietary guidelines.
    • D Delaying all dietary recommendations until the mechanisms are fully understood.
    • E Promoting ready-to-heat products as a convenient dietary choice.
    • F Discouraging the consumption of ultra-processed foods in dietary recommendations and government policies.

正确项准确对应 existing evidence is sufficient to justify 后面的行动结论,并完整保留两个政策载体:dietary recommendations 和 government policies。它没有把 studies have linked 的相关性夸张成确定因果,也没有忽略 mechanisms are not fully understood 这一保留。

作为 news report 的 lead paragraph,它 establishes 了整篇 article 的 central issue,通过 pointing out 在 scientific consensus 背景下仍存在的 debate,为后续 detailed discussion 搭建了 framework,符合 inverted pyramid structure 中最 critical information 前置的 principle。

这个 paragraph 作为 news report 的 context-building section,提供了 specific details about 即将发生的 debate:two papers published、authors' credentials(Monteiro from São Paulo 和 Astrup from Novo Nordisk)、以及 debate venue(NUTRITION 2024 event),这是 standard journalistic practice 来 establish source credibility。

通过 explaining processing degrees(from unprocessed to ultra-processed)和 providing concrete examples(soft drinks、packaged snacks 等),它为 non-expert readers 建立了 understanding foundation,这是 science journalism 中的 essential clarification step。

作为 definitional section,它 addresses 了 debate 中的 key term ambiguity。因为 readers 可能不 familiar with 'ultra-processed foods' 这个 technical term,这个 paragraph 通过 operational definition 和 everyday examples 来 ensure 后续 discussion 的 arguments 能被 properly understood。

这个 argumentative paragraph presents 了 Monteiro 的 position,通过 citing research evidence(studies linking consumption to health risks)和 acknowledging limitations(mechanisms not fully understood),然后 stating his conclusion(existing evidence justifies policy action)。这是 balanced reporting 中 presenting one side 的 standard approach,用 evidence-claim structure。

作为 debate coverage 的 argument presentation section,它 demonstrates 了为什么 one side 认为应该 add processing-based warnings。通过 presenting empirical findings(weight gain、chronic diseases)和 logical reasoning(even after adjusting for nutrients),它让 readers understand 这个 position 的 evidential basis,符合 fair reporting 中 substantiating claims 的 requirement。

Debate-style 的新闻报道会在 second paragraph 明确告诉读者 who is debating what,这段通常包含 source credibility(哪些专家或机构)和 debate structure(正反双方的立场),这直接揭示了文章的 organizational framework。

Debate-centered 新闻的主旨不是某个 position,而是 the existence and nature of the debate 本身。当文章平衡呈现 multiple perspectives 且没有明确 editorial stance 时,主旨就是 describing the controversy,包括 what's being debated、who's debating、why it's controversial。

MAIN IDEA ·

Two scientists debate whether ultra-processed foods should be explicitly discouraged in dietary guidelines. While studies link these foods to health risks beyond their nutritional content, the controversy centers on whether current evidence justifies adding processing-based warnings to existing nutrition recommendations.

    我们首先注意到in order to这个purpose marker,它告诉我们这个动作是extract和alter的ultimate goal。然后看action sequence:extract → alter → 这个词 the final product,这是一个完整的manufacturing chain。

然后回到ultra-processed的core definition:extract → alter → formulate,这个logic chain暗示食物被broken down and reassembled。

然后注意evidence vs understanding的contrast:evidence告诉我们what,这个词解释how/why。

这种 rhetorical question 不是真的要 answer,而是用来 frame 整个 discussion, make the topic concrete and relevant to everyday dietary choices。

信号词 one question has the question remains a key question is this raises the question the debate centers on should we is it time to do consumers need to

仿写: 写作时可以从 a controversial or debatable question 入手,这个 question 应该 relate to readers' daily lives 或 current concerns。关键是让 question sound natural 且 open-ended,避免 yes/no 的简单 answer。 While there is [existing consensus/common practice], one question has [recently/increasingly] [stirred debate/raised concerns/prompted discussion]: should [target audience] [take specific action]?'

    P2

文章 cite 了 two papers published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 以及即将举行的 live virtual debate。 通过 mention specific authors (Carlos Monteiro, Arne Astrup) 和他们的 affiliations (University of São Paulo, Novo Nordisk Foundation),文章 establish 这是 a serious scientific debate,而不只是 casual opinion。这些 references 让 readers 知道这个 discussion has scholarly backing。

信号词 published according to studies show research indicates experts argue scientists suggest authors outline findings reveal

格式可以是 'According to [study/paper/report] published in [journal/platform], [expert name] from [institution] argues/suggests/finds that...'。 [Number] papers published [time frame] in [prestigious journal] outline [different perspectives/the case for and against] [topic]. The authors, [names] of [institutions], will [action that shows ongoing debate].'

    P3

第三段详细 describe 了 classification system 的 technical details:什么是 ultra-processed foods,它们如何被 defined (using sequences of processes, extract substances, alter with chemicals),以及 concrete examples (soft drinks, candy, packaged snacks)。这种 neutral, factual description 让 readers understand the precise meaning 的同时避免 bias。通过 provide specific characteristics (cheap, tasty, convenient) 和 real-world examples,文章 make abstract concept tangible,帮助 readers 识别这些 foods in their own lives。

信号词 defines as classifies characteristically examples include refers to is described as consists of includes

仿写: 构建 objective description 时用 three-layer structure:definition (what it is), characteristics (key features), examples (concrete instances)。使用 neutral verbs like 'defines', 'classifies', 'includes', 'characterizes' 而不是 judgmental words。 The system defines [term] as those [made/characterized by] [process/feature]. [Term] are characteristically [adjectives describing properties]; examples include [concrete examples that readers can recognize].'

    P4

第四段 reference studies that have linked ultra-processed foods with negative health outcomes (weight gain, increased risk of chronic diseases)。虽然没有 cite specific numbers,但用 'studies have linked' 和 'even after adjusting for' 这样的 language 来 indicate 有 empirical evidence supporting the claims。这种 evidence-based approach 给 Monteiro's argument 提供 scientific backing,同时也承认 'mechanisms are not fully understood',showing intellectual honesty about the limits of current knowledge。

信号词 studies have linked research shows data indicates evidence suggests findings reveal analysis demonstrates statistics show results indicate

仿写: 引用 research findings 时要 balance certainty and caution。Use phrases like 'studies have linked/shown/found' to establish evidence base,但也用 'while mechanisms are not fully understood' or 'though more research is needed' 来 acknowledge limitations。 Studies have [linked/shown/demonstrated] [phenomenon A] with [outcome B], even after [controlling for variables]. While [aspect] is not fully understood, [expert] argues that existing evidence [justifies/suggests/indicates] [conclusion/action].'

    P2 P4

文章 structure 本身体现 contrast:'the case for and against' ultra-processed food warnings。通过 present two scientists from different institutions (academic vs. industry-affiliated) with opposing views,文章 create a balanced framework。第四段还有 implicit contrast:ultra-processed foods 的 health risks exist 'even after adjusting for' nutritional content, suggesting there's something beyond traditional nutrients 值得 concern。这种 juxtaposition 让 readers see both sides of the debate 而不是 one-sided advocacy。

信号词 for and against however while in contrast on the other hand whereas meanwhile conversely yet even after

仿写: 构建 contrast 时可以用 structural parallelism ('the case for and against') 或 transitional phrases ('while X argues..., Y contends...')。确保 give equal weight to different perspectives,避免 subtle bias through word choice。 [Source A] argues that [position 1]. [In contrast/However/Meanwhile], [Source B] contends that [position 2]. The debate centers around [core point of disagreement].' 或者用 'While [common understanding], [new evidence/perspective] suggests [alternative view].'

通过先说 'most existing guidelines' have consensus,文章 make the current debate stand out as 一个 notable exception or new frontier,增加 topic 的 significance。

信号词 form the basis traditionally historically have long been it is widely accepted for years established practice consensus around

仿写: 构建 background context 时用 present tense 描述 current state 或 established facts,然后用 contrastive transition 引入新的 question or development。 [Topic/Field] form the basis for [application/practice] around [scope]. While there is [consensus/common practice] around [aspect], [new question/challenge/debate] has recently [emerged/stirred debate/raised concerns].' 关键是 make the transition from established knowledge to current controversy smooth and logical。

    P1
While there is strong scientific consensus around most existing guidelines, one question has recently stirred debate

While Although Though Even though Despite In spite of Notwithstanding

这个 implicature 表明:虽然 dietary guidelines 的 most parts 已经有 solid scientific backing,但 ultra-processed foods 这个 specific question 仍然 controversial。 同时 justify 了为什么需要 present both sides of the debate。

    P2
outline the case for and against using the concept of ultra-processed foods

对比结构类 for and against pros and cons advantages and disadvantages on one hand... on the other hand supporters and critics advocates and opponents both sides

这个 expression 的 subtext 是:这不是 clear-cut issue,而是有 valid arguments on both sides 的 scientific controversy。言外之意传达:two papers 会 present contrasting views, readers 需要 weigh both perspectives。

    P3
Ultra-processed foods are characteristically designed to be cheap, tasty, and convenient

情态表达类 characteristically designed to be designed to be intended to meant to engineered to formulated to crafted to

这个 phrase 的 implicit meaning 是:ultra-processed foods 的 attributes (cheap, tasty, convenient) 是 deliberately engineered for commercial success,而不是 nutritional value。言外之意批评:这些 products 是 profit-driven design, appeal to consumers' immediate desires 而非 long-term health。对 article's main point 的 significance 在于:它 establish 为什么这些 foods 值得 concern——它们的 very design philosophy prioritizes marketability over health,这 support Monteiro 的 argument for discouraging consumption。

    P4
even after adjusting for the amount of salt, sugar, and fat in the diet

强调递进类 even after adjusting for even after even when despite controlling for after accounting for independent of regardless of

这个 qualifier 的 implication 是:ultra-processed foods 的 health risks 不能 simply explained by 它们的 high salt, sugar, fat content。 对 main thesis 的 crucial contribution 是:它 justify 为什么需要 specifically warn about ultra-processed foods,而不只是 limit salt/sugar/fat。这个 evidence strengthen Monteiro's position,因为它 suggest current nutrition guidelines (focus on nutrients) insufficient,需要 consider processing degree。

    P4
While the mechanisms behind these associations are not fully understood, Monteiro argues that the existing evidence is sufficient to justify discouraging consumption

让步转折类 not fully understood... sufficient to justify not fully understood... but unclear... yet unknown... however uncertain... nevertheless incomplete... still lacking... nonetheless

这个 statement 的 subtext 是:Monteiro 采取 precautionary stance——即使 don't fully know why ultra-processed foods harmful, observed associations strong enough to recommend avoidance。言外之意反映:在 public health decisions 里,可以在 mechanistic understanding incomplete 时 act on epidemiological evidence。对 debate framing 的 significance 是:它 reveal Monteiro's argumentative strategy 和 potential weakness——opponents (like Astrup) 可能 argue insufficient mechanistic evidence means premature to make strong recommendations。这 set up 了 debate 的 core tension:标准 of evidence for policy action。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为客观中立( Neutral and objective presentation of debate)。

当 writer 用 'one question has recently stirred debate' 这种 phrasing 时,他是在 present an issue 而不是 advocate a viewpoint,这是 objectivity 的第一个 signal。

第二段明确说明 'outline the case for and against',这种 explicit acknowledgment of two perspectives 是 journalistic objectivity 的 hallmark。

如果作者写 'Monteiro proves' 或 'research shows',就会 indicate support,但 'argues' 保持了 distance。

第1段 直接抛出 'one question has recently stirred debate',这种 presentation of controversy 是 news reporting 的典型 signal,因为议论文会直接 state a position,说明文则会 define a concept without controversy

第2段 提供了 'Two papers published today in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition' 以及 'will discuss the issue in a live virtual debate August 14th',这种 precise sourcing 和 future event notice 是纯粹的 news function,议论文不会 cite ongoing publications 作为 central focus,说明文也不会 announce upcoming events

第3段 和 第4段 客观地 outline Monteiro's position 和 classification system,使用 'Monteiro argues' 这样的 attribution verbs 而非 'I believe' 或 'we must acknowledge',这种 third-person objectivity 是 news reporting 的 hallmark,而议论文会 take a side,说明文则会 provide unified explanation without presenting debates

本文同时满足所有三个 criteria: temporal relevance (recently stirred debate, published today), concrete sourcing (journal name, authors, debate date), 和 balanced presentation (outlines case for and against),这种 triangulation 确认了 news reporting 的 genre identity
