Explanation∶ How Brain Training Can Make You Significantly Smarter

As many people hit middle age, they often start to notice that their memory and mental clarity are not what they used to be. We suddenly can't remember where we put the keys just a moment ago, or an old acquaintance's name, or the name of an old band we used to love. As the brain fades, we refer to these occurrences as "senior moments." While seemingly innocent, this loss of mental focus can potentially have a(n) damaging impact on our professional, social, and personal wellbeing.

Neuroscientists, experts who study the nervous system, are increasingly showing that there's actually a lot that can be done. It turns out that the brain needs exercise in much the same way our muscles do, and the right mental workouts can significantly improve our basic cognitive functions. Thinking is essentially a process of making connections in the brain. To a certain extent, our ability to excel in making the connections that drive intelligence is inherited. However, because these connections are made through effort and practice, scientists believe that intelligence can expand and fluctuate according to mental effort.

Now, a new Web-based company has taken it a step further and developed the first "brain training program" designed to actually help people improve and regain their mental sharpness.

The Web-based program allows you to systematically improve your memory and attention skills. The program keeps track of your progress and provides detailed feedback on your performance and improvement. Most importantly, it constantly modifies and enhances the games you play to build on the strengths you are developing – much like a(n) effective exercise routine requires you to increase resistance and vary your muscle use.

  1. P1

    The Cost of Memory Decline

Age-related memory lapses can negatively affect people's wellbeing.

  2. P2

    Exercise for the Brain

Mental exercise can strengthen brain connections and improve cognitive ability.

  3. P3

    A New Brain Training Program

A new web-based brain training program aims to restore mental sharpness.

  4. P4

    How Adaptive Brain Training Works

The program uses adaptive exercises and feedback to improve memory and attention.

SELF CHECK ·

The passage suggests that "senior moments" may

    • A prove that normal aging inevitably causes dementia.
    • B affect only people's performance at work.
    • C undermine wellbeing in several areas of life.
    • D make people forget the names of all old acquaintances.
    • E be harmless because they are a natural part of middle age.
    • F disappear once people pay closer attention.

Why can intelligence change according to the passage?

    • A It is determined entirely by inherited ability.
    • B Muscle exercise directly strengthens cognitive functions.
    • C Scientists can now measure every connection in the brain.
    • D The neural connections behind it are shaped by effort and practice.
    • E Mental workouts eliminate the effects of aging.
    • F Cognitive functions no longer depend on brain connections.

What is the chief purpose of the newly developed brain training program?

    • A To replace neuroscientists' study of the nervous system.
    • B To diagnose the causes of memory disorders.
    • C To guarantee permanent protection against mental decline.
    • D To provide users with a social networking service.
    • E To help people improve and regain mental sharpness.
    • F To prove that intelligence is wholly inherited.

它是对 designed to actually help people 的近乎等义改写。

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 change the games continually

Why does the program continually change the games users play?

    • A To make all users play the same standardized games.
    • B To collect progress data for neuroscientists.
    • C To prevent users from receiving detailed feedback.
    • D To reduce the resistance required in physical exercise.
    • E To ensure that memory improves without any effort.
    • F To build on the strengths that users are developing.

正确项与原文的 to build on the strengths you are developing 完全同义,并准确回答 Why。

动词后目的截取 最快路径是把 continually change the games 改造成 constantly modifies the games,直抵 第4段。

这个 opening 意群通过描述 middle age 人群的 memory decline 现象,比如 can't remember keys 或 old acquaintance's name,引出 senior moments 这个 concept,并强调这种 loss of mental focus 可能对 professional、social 和 personal wellbeing 产生 damaging impact,从而为全文设置了一个需要解决的 problem。

通过解释 thinking 是 making connections 的 process,以及 intelligence 可以通过 mental effort 来 expand and fluctuate,为 brain training 提供 scientific foundation 和 theoretical basis,属于说明文中的 background information 和 mechanism explanation 部分。

这个 transitional 意群简短有力地 announce 一个 new development——a Web-based company 开发了 first brain training program。虽然 paragraph 很 brief,但它完成了关键的 function:从 general scientific principles(意群_2)过渡到 specific practical solution(意群_4),用 taken it a step further 这个 phrase 标志着从 theory 到 application 的 shift。

从 broad scientific explanation 收束到 one specific program,符合说明文从 general to specific 的 rhetorical pattern,为最后的 detailed description(意群_4)做 immediate preparation,使文章的 informational flow 更加 smooth and logical。

这个 concluding 意群提供 detailed description of the program features,包括 systematically improve memory and attention、track progress、provide detailed feedback,以及最关键的 adaptive mechanism——constantly modifies and enhances games。通过 exercise routine analogy 来 illustrate 这个 program 如何 work,完成了说明文对 specific solution 的 thorough explanation,给 readers 一个 complete picture。

作为 expository article 的 closing section,这个意群通过 elaborating on specific features and mechanisms 来 complete the informational arc。它呼应了意群_2 的 exercise analogy,将 abstract concept 转化为 concrete operational details,让 readers 不仅知道 brain training is possible(意群_2)和 a program exists(意群_3),还了解 how it actually works,从而完成说明文 inform and explain 的 core purpose。

现在让我们 connect the dots:从 parallel structure 看,fluctuate 和 expand 处于 equal status,但 expand 是 unidirectional(单向增长),所以 fluctuate 应该是 bidirectional change。从 causal logic 看,mental effort 的 variability 要求 intelligence 也能 go up and down。从 morphology 看,fluct- root 暗示 fluid-like movement。

    P1

作者通过 concrete examples 来说明 middle age 时的 memory decline,比如 can't remember where we put the keys(忘记钥匙放哪),forget an old acquaintance's name(忘记熟人名字),或者 the name of an old band(忘记乐队名)。这些 specific instances 让抽象的 mental clarity loss 变得 tangible and relatable,使读者能 immediately connect 自己的 personal experiences,从而认同文章关于 brain training necessity 的 main argument。

信号词 for example for instance such as like including namely

What are the most common situations 读者会 encounter? We suddenly can't remember [specific item A], or [specific item B], or [specific item C].' 注意使用 parallel structure 和 progressive examples 来 build up 说服力。

    P2 P4

文章用 'the brain needs exercise in much the same way our muscles do' 这个 analogy 来解释 brain training 的 principle。 这个 metaphor 贯穿全文,后面提到的 'increase resistance and vary muscle use' 进一步 reinforce 这个 comparison,为 web-based program 的 scientific basis 建立 credibility。

信号词 like as similar to just as in much the same way comparable to analogous to

问自己:What familiar process shares similar mechanisms?使用 'just as...so too' 或 'in much the same way' 这样的 connective phrases。 [Target concept] needs [action] in much the same way [familiar concept] does, and the right [method] can significantly improve [outcome].'

    P2

文章对 neuroscientists 给出 precise definition:'experts who study the nervous system'。这个 brief but accurate 的 definition 确保 readers 在继续阅读前 understand the authority 和 expertise behind 后续的 scientific claims。通过 immediate clarification,作者 establish credibility 并 eliminate potential confusion,让 argument 的 logical foundation 更加 solid。

信号词 is refers to means defined as is known as namely

采用 'X, [role/function] who/that [defining characteristic]' 的 structure。 [Term], [category] who [specific function/expertise], are increasingly showing that...'

    P2

文章对 'thinking' 进行 deeper explanation:'Thinking is essentially a process of making connections in the brain'。 这个 clarification 为后续讨论 intelligence expansion 和 brain training effectiveness 提供 theoretical foundation,让 readers understand why practice and effort 能 improve cognitive functions。

信号词 essentially basically in other words that is to say in essence put simply fundamentally

仿写: 使用 'essentially', 'basically', 'in essence' 来 signal interpretive explanation。 [Concept] is essentially a process of [fundamental action/mechanism].' 或 'To put it another way, [concept] involves [core elements].'

    P1 P2 P4

文章将 'what they used to be' 与 current state 进行 temporal comparison, contrast past mental sharpness 和 present decline。这个 before-and-after comparison 不仅 highlight the problem's reality,还 create motivation for seeking solutions。

信号词 compared to in contrast whereas while than more/less than as...as used to be

仿写: 使用 temporal comparisons(used to be vs. now)或 comparative structures(more...than, less...than, as...as)。 [Subject] are not what they used to be' 或 '[Concept A] in much the same way [Concept B]'。在 presenting problems 时,use past-present contrast 来 emphasize urgency;在 explaining solutions 时,use parallel comparisons 来 show effectiveness。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
While seemingly innocent, this loss of mental focus can potentially have a(n) damaging impact on our professional, social, and personal wellbeing.

委婉表达 seemingly innocent apparently harmless looks harmless appears insignificant seems trivial on the surface at first glance

    P2
To a certain extent, our ability to excel in making the connections that drive intelligence is inherited. However, because these connections are made through effort and practice, scientists believe that intelligence can expand and fluctuate according to mental effort.

To a certain extent to a certain extent to some degree partially somewhat to a limited extent in part

作者用'to a certain extent'这个 hedge 模糊限制语承认 genetic factors 遗传因素的存在,但立刻用'however'转折,强调 effort and practice 努力和练习的 decisive role 决定性作用。

    P3
Now, a new Web-based company has taken it a step further and developed the first 'brain training program' designed to actually help people improve and regain their mental sharpness.

对比类 taken it a step further gone beyond taken to the next level pushed the boundaries advanced beyond surpassed previous efforts elevated to a new level

作者用'taken it a step further'这个 expression 表达暗示存在一个 progression 进展:从理论认知(第二段的 brain needs exercise 大脑需要锻炼)到 practical application 实际应用(这个 web-based program 网络程序)。'the first'进一步强调这是 pioneering effort 开创性努力。

    P4
it constantly modifies and enhances the games you play to build on the strengths you are developing – much like a(n) effective exercise routine requires you to increase resistance and vary your muscle use.

类比词 much like similar to just as in the same way analogous to comparable to parallel to
