Within the span of a hundred years, in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, a tide of emigration – one of the great folk wanderings of history – swept from Europe to America. This movement, driven by powerful and diverse motivations, built a nation out of a wilderness and, by its nature, shaped the character and destiny of an uncharted continent.

The United States is the product of two principal forces – the immigration of European peoples with their varied ideas, customs, and national characteristics and the impact of a new country which modified these traits. Of necessity, colonial America was a projection of Europe. Across the Atlantic came successive groups of Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans, Scots, Irishmen, Dutchmen, Swedes, and many others who attempted to transplant their habits and traditions to the new world. But the force of geographic conditions peculiar to America, the interplay of the varied national groups upon one another, and the sheer difficulty of maintaining old-world ways in a raw, new continent caused significant changes. These changes were gradual and at first scarcely visible. But the result was a new social pattern which, although it resembled European society in many ways, had a character that was distinctly American.

The first shiploads of immigrants bound for the territory which is now the United States crossed the Atlantic more than a hundred years after the 15th- and 16th-century explorations of North America. In the meantime, thriving Spanish colonies had been established in Mexico, the West Indies, and South America. These travelers to North America came in small, unmercifully overcrowded craft. During their six- to twelve-week voyage, they survived on barely enough food allotted to them. Many of the ships were lost in storms, many passengers died of disease, and infants rarely survived the journey. Sometimes storms blew the vessels far off their course, and often calm brought unbearably long delay.

To the anxious travelers the sight of the American shore brought almost inexpressible relief. Said one recorder of events, "The air at twelve leagues' distance smelt as sweet as a new-blown garden." The colonists' first glimpse of the new land was a sight of dense woods. The virgin forest with its richness and variety of trees was a real treasure-house which extended from Maine all the way down to Georgia. Here was abundant fuel and lumber. Here was the raw material of houses and furniture, ships and potash, dyes and naval stores.

  1. P1

    The Great Migration to America

European emigration to America transformed a wilderness into a nation and shaped its destiny.

  2. P2

    The Making of American Society

Diverse European traditions were reshaped by American conditions into a distinct American society.

    本段是全文的theoretical core,它具体阐释了首段“shaped the character and destiny”的机制。

  3. P3

    The Perilous Atlantic Voyage

Early immigrants endured a late, dangerous, and arduous Atlantic crossing to North America.

  4. P4

Relief and Riches in the New Land

The new land relieved the colonists and provided rich forest resources for settlement.

更重要的是,森林资源为建房、造船等settlement activities提供条件,具体印证了首段所说移民能够“build a nation out of a wilderness”。

What does the author suggest was a major consequence of the emigration from Europe to America?

    • A It ended the political conflicts that had divided European countries.
    • B It made the American continent fully known before settlement began.
    • C It helped create a nation and shape the future of the continent.
    • D It was caused mainly by the promise of abundant natural resources.
    • E It preserved European customs without substantial change.
    • F It immediately established a uniform culture throughout America.

该项把 built a nation out of a wilderness 与 shaped the character and destiny of an uncharted continent 压缩为 helped create 与 shape the future,属于忠实的同义改写。

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 distinctly American social pattern contributed to

Which factor contributed to the emergence of a distinctly American social pattern?

    • A The complete preservation of old-world habits and traditions.
    • B The isolation of each European group from all the others.
    • C A rapid rejection of every European idea and custom.
    • D The interaction of diverse national groups under American conditions.
    • E The earlier establishment of Spanish colonies in the Americas.
    • F The immigrants' ability to maintain familiar institutions without difficulty.

该项概括了 the force of geographic conditions peculiar to America 与 the interplay of the varied national groups upon one another。 障碍是选项使用 interaction 和 under American conditions 替换原文的 interplay 与 peculiar to America,考生需识别同义改写。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 crossing the Atlantic hardship

What was one hardship faced by the early travelers crossing the Atlantic?

    • A They were provided with ample food for voyages of only a few days.
    • B They usually traveled in large vessels designed to prevent overcrowding.
    • C They lost their way because the American shore was impossible to identify.
    • D They arrived after Spanish colonies had disappeared from the Americas.
    • E They had to survive on barely sufficient food during a voyage lasting weeks.
    • F They rarely experienced delays because calm weather sped up their passage.

选项准确整合了 six- to twelve-week voyage 和 barely enough food allotted to them。

Why was the virgin forest regarded as a treasure-house by the colonists?

    • A It provided the travelers with an immediate route to European markets.
    • B It was valued chiefly for its sweet-smelling air near the coast.
    • C It offered cleared land that required no further labor from settlers.
    • D It contained rare metals that financed the colonial settlements.
    • E It protected the colonists from all dangers in the new land.
    • F It supplied abundant materials for fuel, construction, and other practical uses.

该项概括 abundant fuel and lumber 以及 the raw material of houses and furniture, ships and potash, dyes and naval stores。construction 对应 houses、ships 等建造用途,other practical uses 覆盖 furniture、potash、dyes、naval stores,保留 abundant 的数量特征。

这个 opening paragraph 开门见山地 introduces 了文章的 central topic,指出在17到18世纪初的 a hundred years 里,一股 powerful 的 emigration tide 从 Europe 席卷到 America,这场 folk wandering 不仅 built a nation out of wilderness,还 shaped 了这片 uncharted continent 的 character and destiny

这个 段落 深入 explains 了 United States 作为 product 是如何由 two principal forces 塑造的:一是 diverse European peoples 带来的 varied ideas, customs, and national characteristics,二是 new country 的 geographic conditions 对这些 traits 的 modification。文中特别强调 colonial America 虽然是 Europe 的 projection,但 American conditions 和 national groups 之间的 interplay 导致了 gradual changes,最终形成了一个 resembles European society 但又 distinctly American 的 new social pattern

这个 explanatory section 是 expository text 的 core analytical part,它 break down 了 transformation process 的 mechanism。通过 identify two forces 和 describe their interaction,这段为读者 clarify 了 how 一个 distinctly American society 从 European roots 中 emerged 出来,directly support 了主旨中的 transformed 概念

这段 shift 到 chronological description,讲述 first shiploads of immigrants 在 15th- and 16th-century explorations 之后的 over a hundred years 才 crossed the Atlantic。文中 vividly describe 了 voyage 的 harsh conditions:small and overcrowded craft,six- to twelve-week journey, barely enough food,加上 storms, disease, 和 infant mortality 带来的 tremendous hardship

这个 descriptive section 通过 concrete details 来 illustrate 主旨中提到的 challenges of colonial life。它让 transformation 这个 abstract concept 变得 tangible, show 了 immigrants 为 build a nation 所 endure 的 sheer difficulty,这 reinforce 了前文提到的 maintaining old-world ways 的 difficulty

这段 continue the chronological narrative, describe 了 travelers 在 sight of American shore 时感受到的 inexpressible relief,以及他们对 new land 的 first glimpse。文中通过 sensory detail(air smelt as sweet as a new-blown garden)和 concrete description of dense woods 来 present America 作为 treasure-house 的 image, emphasize 了 virgin forest 提供的 abundant resources:fuel, lumber, raw material for houses, furniture, ships 等

这个 concluding section 通过 描绘 新大陆的 richness 和 variety 来 explain 为什么这片 wilderness 能够 transform into a nation。它 illustrate 了主旨中 geographic conditions 的 具体内容,show 了 new country 如何 provide the material foundation for building 这个 distinctly American society

MAIN IDEA ·

说明文的首段通常会establish the context,这篇文章开头就明确了时间范围 'within the span of a hundred years' 和核心事件 'a tide of emigration',结尾句强调了这个movement的significance,即'shaped the character and destiny',这种首尾呼应的structure直接揭示了文章要explain一个historical process及其impact

The United States is the product of two principal forces',这是典型的explanatory statement,说明文章要解释一个formation process。紧接着列举了'immigration'和'impact of a new country'这两个forces,然后整段都在elaborating这两股力量如何interact并produce changes,最终导致'a new social pattern'。

    第三段描述了journey的hardships('small, unmercifully overcrowded craft'、'many ships were lost'),第四段描述了arrival和new land的resources('dense woods'、'treasure-house'),这些都是supporting details,用来illustrate前面提到的'difficulty of maintaining old-world ways'和'geographic conditions peculiar to America'。

通过前三步,我们已经identified了关键要素:what happened(European immigration during 17th-18th centuries)、how it happened(interaction of European traditions with new American conditions)、what resulted(a distinctly American society)。

主旨信号词 shaped P1 product of P2 modified P2 the result was P2 distinctly P2

MAIN IDEA ·

WORD INFERENCE ·

最后,from Europe to America 的 directional phrase 锁定了它的具体含义:从原居地离开。

从 immediate collocation 看,upon one another 明确了这是 reciprocal relationship。从 parallel structure 看,它与 geographic conditions 和 difficulty of maintaining ways 并列,都是产生 change 的 forces。

第3段 描述了 voyage 的艰苦条件:overcrowded craft、barely enough food、six to twelve weeks。 allotted to them 用 passive form 修饰 food,表明有 authority 把这些 barely enough 的 food 给了 passengers。

    P1

作者用 "a tide of emigration" 和 "folk wanderings" 来 describe 移民运动,将 massive human migration 比作 tide(潮水)和 wandering(漫游)。 通过这个 vivid comparison,读者能立刻 grasp 移民运动的 magnitude 和其 transformative power,为文章主旨中 "transformed a wilderness into a nation" 这一核心观点 lay the foundation。

信号词 tide wave flood stream current flow swept like as resembled similar to analogous to

比如描述 technological revolution 可以说 "a wave of innovation swept across industries",描述 cultural exchange 可以说 "ideas flowed like rivers between civilizations"。模版:[Abstract phenomenon] + be/as + [concrete natural force/familiar image] → 例如:"The spread of literacy was a sunrise illuminating dark corners of society."

    P1 P3

文章提到 "a hundred years"、"15th- and 16th-century"、"six- to twelve-week voyage"、"twelve leagues' distance" 等 specific time spans 和 measurements。这些 precise figures 不是 random details,而是用来 establish the temporal scope 和 physical hardships of immigration。特别是 "six- to twelve-week voyage" 这个数字让读者 realize 旅程的 duration 和 difficulty, support 文章主旨中 "challenges of colonial life" 这一要素。

信号词 years century week leagues distance numbers percent rate span duration from...to approximately nearly more than

仿写: 在说明文中 incorporate numbers 时要问:这个数字 reveal 了什么 essential aspect of my topic? 比如说明 urbanization 可以写 "Within fifty years, the population density increased from 100 to 5,000 people per square mile"。模版:[Time/distance/quantity] + specific number + [action/state] → 例如:"Over two decades, literacy rates climbed from 30% to 85%, fundamentally reshaping society."

    P2

文章 enumerate specific immigrant groups:"Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans, Scots, Irishmen, Dutchmen, Swedes, and many others"。这个 detailed list 不是 mere enumeration,而是通过 concrete examples 来 demonstrate "diverse motivations" 和 "varied national characteristics" mentioned in the thesis。每个 nationality 代表 different cultural traditions 和 customs, collectively illustrating 文章主旨中 "interaction of diverse European traditions" 这一核心概念。Examples make the abstract concept of diversity tangible。

信号词 such as for example including like namely for instance particularly especially among them these include ranging from...to

仿写: 使用例子时要确保 examples 真正 represent the diversity or key features of your topic。问自己:我的 examples 能否 collectively show the full spectrum of what I'm explaining?比如说明 technological innovation 可以写 "From smartphones to electric vehicles, from AI assistants to renewable energy systems, modern technology reshapes daily life"。模版:[Category] + such as/including + [Example 1], [Example 2], [Example 3], and [more examples] → 例如:"Multiple industries—manufacturing, healthcare, education, and transportation—underwent digital transformation."

    P2

文章明确指出 "a new social pattern which, although it resembled European society in many ways, had a character that was distinctly American"。这个 explicit comparison between European and American societies 是文章的 structural core, directly supporting 主旨中 "interaction of diverse European traditions with new geographic conditions" creating something new。通过 contrast(resembled...but distinct),作者 highlights transformation—immigration didn't simply transplant European society 而是 created something fundamentally different。

信号词 resembled similar to different from in contrast compared with unlike whereas while although but however on the other hand likewise similarly

仿写: 使用比较时要建立 clear comparison framework:What am I comparing? On what dimensions? 确保 comparison serves your explanatory purpose。比如说明 online vs. traditional education 可以写 "While online learning shares traditional education's goal of knowledge transmission, it differs fundamentally in delivery methods, student interaction patterns, and assessment approaches"。模版:Although/While [Item A] resembles/shares [Item B] in [aspect], it differs in [key distinction] → 例如:"Though artificial intelligence mimics human reasoning in some ways, it operates through fundamentally different mechanisms."

    P4

文章引用了一位 event recorder 的 direct quote:"The air at twelve leagues' distance smelt as sweet as a new-blown garden." 这个 first-hand account 不是 decorative detail,而是用 authentic voice 来 convey 移民者的 emotional relief and hope upon arriving。这个 quotation brings historical experience to life,让 abstract narrative about immigration 变得 personal and vivid, supporting 文章主旨中 colonial life 的 human dimension。Primary source 增加 credibility and emotional resonance。

信号词 said according to noted observed stated wrote reported as [source] put it in the words of quoted cited remarked commented

仿写: 引用时要确保 quotation directly serves your explanatory goal,不要 quote for the sake of quoting。问:这个引用 add 了什么 unique value(authority、evidence、vividness)that my own words cannot?比如说明 innovation challenges 可以写 "As Edison famously noted, 'Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration,' highlighting the persistent effort required"。模版:[Introduction] + "[Direct quotation]" + [explanation of relevance] → 例如:"According to historian Smith, 'The revolution began not in palaces but in printing shops,' emphasizing technology's democratizing force."

    P2

文章对 "the force of geographic conditions peculiar to America" 进行了 elaboration, explaining 它包括 "the interplay of the varied national groups upon one another, and the sheer difficulty of maintaining old-world ways in a raw, new continent"。这个 detailed explanation 不是 simple repetition,而是 unpack 一个 complex concept into understandable components。这种诠释 clarifies 文章主旨中 "new geographic conditions" 如何 shape American character—不仅是 physical geography,还包括 social interaction 和 practical challenges。

信号词 that is in other words meaning which means this refers to specifically namely to put it differently to clarify more precisely

仿写: 诠释时要 identify what aspects need clarification 并 provide layered explanation。 比如说明 "sustainable development" 可以写 "Sustainable development—meaning economic growth that meets present needs without compromising future generations' resources—requires balancing environmental, social, and economic factors"。模版:[Concept] + [clarifying phrase/dash/colon] + [detailed explanation with multiple facets] → 例如:"Digital literacy involves not just technical skills but critical abilities: evaluating online information, protecting privacy, and communicating effectively across platforms."

    P3

文章将 immigration hardships 分成 several categories:"Many of the ships were lost in storms, many passengers died of disease, and infants rarely survived the journey. Sometimes storms blew the vessels far off their course, and often calm brought unbearably long delay." 这个 systematic categorization of dangers(storms、disease、off-course navigation、delays)不是 random listing,而是 organize 移民旅程的 multiple challenges into distinct types。这种分类 supports 文章主旨中 "challenges of colonial life" by systematically presenting the spectrum of hardships,让 readers comprehend the full scope of difficulties。

信号词 types kinds categories classified into divided into consists of includes falls into can be grouped as several types various forms different kinds

仿写: 分类时要确保 categories cover the full scope 且 based on consistent criteria。 比如说明 learning methods 可以写 "Learning strategies fall into three categories: cognitive strategies like summarization and elaboration, metacognitive strategies like planning and monitoring, and social strategies like collaboration and seeking feedback"。模版:[Topic] includes/consists of/can be divided into [Category 1], [Category 2], and [Category 3] → 例如:"Urban challenges manifest in three domains: infrastructure strain, environmental degradation, and social inequality."

作者通过同位语 appositive 'one of the great folk wanderings of history' 将这次 emigration 移民潮提升到 elevate 世界历史级别 world-historical level 的高度。

让步-转折类 gradual and at first scarcely visible although...but despite...however while...nevertheless even though...yet seemingly...in reality on the surface...but fundamentally

结论先行:本文作者态度为客观中立( objective and informative with subtle appreciation)。

这篇文章用 'a tide of emigration' 和 'folk wanderings' 这样的 descriptive terms 而非 judgmental words。

比如 'powerful and diverse motivations'、'real treasure-house'、'richness and variety' 这些表达虽然在 stating facts,但 word selection 透露出一种 appreciation。这不是 strong bias,而是 mild positive regard embedded in factual description。

作者 extensively describe 了 immigrants 的 hardships('unmercifully overcrowded', 'barely enough food', 'many died')但也 emphasize 了他们的 achievements('built a nation', 'shaped character and destiny')。

作者没有 overtly praise 或 criticize,而是通过 describing 'powerful motivations'、'new social pattern' 和 'treasure-house' 等表达来 convey 一种 measured respect for historical process。这是典型的 informative exposition with implicit positive regard。

  • powerful and diverse P1

同类词 powerful diverse great varied significant

  • one of the great folk wanderings P1

用 'great' 来 modify 'folk wanderings' 是一个 subtle evaluative move。 Great' 不仅表示 scale(规模大),更暗含 importance 和 worthiness of attention。

Opening paragraph 如果用 descriptive tone 描述性语气来 introduce 'a tide of emigration' 这样的 historical phenomenon,那就是在 present factual information 呈现事实信息,而不是 argue a position 论证立场(议论文特征)或 report immediate events 报道即时事件(新闻特征)。说明文的 opening 会 establish what will be explained,确立要解释什么。

如果 paragraph 2 用 'two principal forces' 这样的 framework 框架来 categorize and explain factors 分类并解释因素,paragraph 3 按 chronological order 时间顺序 trace the process 追溯过程,这些都是 expository organizational patterns 说明性组织模式。

如果文章用 'the air smelt as sweet as a new-blown garden' 这样的 vivid description 生动描述来 help readers visualize 帮助读者形象化理解,用 'dense woods'、'virgin forest' 这样的 concrete details 具体细节来 explain the environment 解释环境,这是 expository technique 说明技巧。
