Automakers and tech companies are working hard to offer the first true self-driving car. But 75% of drivers say they wouldn't feel safe in such a vehicle. Still, 60% of drivers would like to get some kind of self-driving feature, such as automatic braking or self-parking the next time they buy a new car. The attitudes are published in a new AAA survey of 1,800 drivers.

Advocates of self-driving cars argue they would be safer than cars driven by humans because they wouldn't get distracted or drive when tired.

But those surveyed by AAA say they trust their own driving skills. Many feel the technology is too new and unproven.

John Nielsen, AAA's managing director of automotive engineering and repair, said tests suggest drivers may be overestimating their own abilities. He also believes they will be more likely to trust self-driving cars as they become more familiar with features such as automatic braking or parking.

He estimated that the "comfort level" will increase considerably in five to ten years.

  1. P1

Drivers' Mixed Views on Self-Driving Technology

A AAA survey shows that drivers distrust fully self-driving cars but welcome partial automated features.

  2. P2

The Safety Case for Self-Driving Cars

Supporters argue that self-driving cars could be safer because they avoid human driving errors.

  3. P3

    Why Drivers Remain Skeptical

Drivers remain skeptical because they trust themselves and consider the technology unproven.

  4. P4

    Expert Explanation for Growing Trust

An AAA expert says drivers may overrate their skills and will trust automation more through familiarity.

  5. P5

    A Forecast of Rising Comfort

Nielsen predicts that drivers' comfort with self-driving technology will rise greatly within five to ten years.

AAA survey

What does the AAA survey reveal about drivers' attitudes toward self-driving technology?

    • A Drivers are ready to replace their current cars with fully autonomous vehicles.
    • B Drivers believe automatic braking is less safe than human driving.
    • C Most drivers are uneasy about fully autonomous cars but are interested in some self-driving features.
    • D Three quarters of drivers want self-parking in their next new car.
    • E The survey found that drivers have little interest in any automated feature.
    • F Automakers have already made fully self-driving cars widely available.

正确项完整保留了原文的双层信息:uneasy 对应 wouldn't feel safe, fully autonomous cars 对应 first true self-driving car, interested in some features 对应 would like to get some kind of self-driving feature。

Why do advocates consider self-driving cars safer than human-driven cars?

    • A They can make every driver more confident in difficult road conditions.
    • B They have already been proved reliable by a large AAA survey.
    • C They are easier to park than conventional cars.
    • D They would avoid the distraction and fatigue that can affect human drivers.
    • E They allow drivers to remain in full control of the vehicle.
    • F They will become affordable within five to ten years.

    该项对原文 wouldn't get distracted or drive when tired 做了准确的名词化概括:distraction 和 fatigue 分别对应两项原因,human drivers 保留了比较对象。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 trust their own too new

What makes many surveyed drivers skeptical about self-driving cars?

    • A They think self-driving cars will distract drivers more easily.
    • B They have found automatic braking and parking too expensive.
    • C They expect the technology to remain unfamiliar for decades.
    • D They doubt that automakers are working on the technology.
    • E They trust their own skills and regard the technology as too new and insufficiently proven.
    • F They prefer human drivers because they never drive when tired.

正确项逐一对应 trust their own driving skills 和 too new and unproven,且用 and 保留了双重原因。

John Nielsen tests suggest

What did tests suggest about drivers, according to John Nielsen?

    • A Drivers are becoming more familiar with automatic braking.
    • B Drivers are less capable than self-driving cars in every situation.
    • C Drivers have no interest in automatic parking systems.
    • D Drivers have already accepted fully self-driving cars as safe.
    • E Drivers need five to ten years to improve their driving skills.
    • F Drivers may be overestimating their own driving abilities.

正确项几乎完整复现 tests suggest drivers may be overestimating their own abilities 的核心判断,并保留 may 这一不确定性。

  5. 第 5 段 定位词 comfort level five to ten years

According to Nielsen's estimate, when will drivers' comfort level rise considerably?

    • A It will rise considerably in five to ten years.
    • B It has already risen considerably over the past five years.
    • C It will rise as soon as automatic braking becomes available.
    • D It will rise after all drivers stop trusting their own skills.
    • E It will remain unchanged until self-driving cars are fully proven safe.
    • F It will rise only after automakers sell 1,800 self-driving cars.

He estimated that the comfort level will increase considerably in five to ten years。It 回指题干中的 comfort level, will 保留 estimate 的未来指向,five to ten years 完整保留区间。

这个 lead paragraph 开门见山地 present 了一个 contradiction:automakers 和 tech companies 正在努力 develop self-driving cars,但 AAA survey 显示 75% of drivers 不会 feel safe,虽然 60% 的人想要 partial features like automatic braking。

它 set the stage for 后续的 explanation 和 expert opinion,是整个 article 的 factual foundation。

这个意群 present 了 advocates' argument, explain 为什么 self-driving cars would be safer:因为它们 wouldn't get distracted or drive when tired。

这个意群在 news structure 中提供 alternative viewpoint, show 了为什么 despite public skepticism, industry 仍然 push forward。

这个意群 return 到 survey respondents' perspective, explain 他们的 concerns:trust their own skills, feel the technology is too new and unproven。用 'But' 开头形成 immediate contrast with 前面的 advocates' view,是 news writing 中的 back-and-forth pattern。

    这个意群 deepen 了 opening 提到的 75% distrust statistic,provide 了 qualitative explanation for quantitative data。

这个意群 introduce expert voice through John Nielsen, provide 两层 insight:tests suggest drivers overestimate their abilities,而且 familiarity with features 会 increase trust。

这个 expert quote 是 article 从 presenting the problem 转向 suggesting resolution 的 pivot point,呼应主旨中的 'trust will grow' 部分。

这个 closing 意群 provide 了 specific timeline estimate:five to ten years for 'comfort level' to increase considerably。作为 news story 的 ending,它给出一个 concrete timeframe,让前面的 abstract prediction 变得 tangible and forward-looking。

这个 concluding 意群在 news structure 中 provide closure with actionable information。

    从 syntax 看,advocates 后接 argue,表明他们是 arguers 或 supporters;从 discourse 看,他们 stand in opposition to skeptical drivers,represent the pro-technology side;从 etymology 看,ad + voc 表示为某事 give voice。

我们从 three directions 来整合:context 显示 drivers 的 self-confidence 和 test results 之间有 gap;morphology 清楚表明 over + estimate 就是估计过度;argument logic 揭示这种 overestimation 是 resistance to technology 的 underlying reason。

数据来自 AAA survey of 1,800 drivers, sample size 的明确让 findings 更有 weight, instantly 为后续的 argument 提供了 solid foundation。

75% 60% 1,800 drivers AAA survey statistics show data reveals according to research indicates study finds X out of Y majority minority

仿写: 写作时要 prioritize 使用 specific figures 而非 vague expressions,比如避免说 'many people',改用 'X% of respondents'。确保 cite the source 和 sample size 来 establish credibility。模版:According to a [source] survey/study of [sample size] [target group], [X%] [verb] [specific finding], while [Y%] [contrasting finding].

第2段 和 第3段 形成更深层的 contrast:advocates 的 safety argument(technology won't get distracted)versus drivers' trust in their own skills。

But however while on the other hand in contrast conversely yet still despite although whereas nevertheless

可以用 'but'、'however'、'while' 等 transitional words 来 signal the shift。注意在 present both sides 后要 avoid premature judgment,让 data speak for itself。模版:While [Group A] [positive claim/data], [Group B] [contrasting claim/data], revealing [underlying tension/complexity].

    P4 P5

文章在 第4段 引入了 John Nielsen 这个 authoritative voice,他的 title 'AAA's managing director of automotive engineering and repair' 立即 establish expertise。他的 statement 包含两个 strategic points:tests suggest drivers overestimate abilities(challenge public confidence)和 familiarity will increase trust(project future optimism)。

信号词 said stated explained noted commented argued believes according to pointed out emphasized suggested claimed remarked

仿写: 选择 quotes 时要确保 speaker 的 credentials 能 support their authority on the topic。在 introduce the quote 之前要 establish who they are 和 why their opinion matters。Quote 的内容要 add value,不是 restate obvious facts,而是 provide insight、analysis 或 prediction。模版:[Name], [Title/Position] at [Organization], said/explained/noted that [insightful statement], adding that [forward-looking or analytical point].

    P1 P2

第1段 的 opening sentence 'Automakers and tech companies are working hard to offer the first true self-driving car' 提供了 essential context, establish 了 industry landscape 和 technological race。这个 background information 解释了 why the survey matters,为后续的 consumer attitudes 提供了 relevance。同样,第2段 用 'Advocates of self-driving cars argue...'

信号词 as with amid in the context of given that following after recently currently ongoing

仿写: 提供 background 时要 balance brevity 和 completeness,只 include details that directly relevant 到 main story。使用 present continuous tense(are working)来 convey ongoing efforts, past tense 来 establish historical context。避免 over-explaining,focus on information that makes the current development meaningful。模版:As [industry/field] [continues to/has been] [action], [current development/survey/event] reveals/shows [new information relevant to this context].

    P1 P3 P4

第3段 用 simple declarative sentences 来 present survey findings:'those surveyed by AAA say they trust their own driving skills' 和 'Many feel the technology is too new and unproven'。这种 straightforward reporting style 避免了 editorial judgment,让 facts speak for themselves。通过 directly report 受访者的 attitudes without evaluative language,文章 maintain journalistic neutrality,允许 readers 形成自己的 opinions。这种 objective tone 在整篇文章中 consistently 使用,particularly when presenting conflicting viewpoints。

信号词 say report indicate show reveal find suggest according to data shows results indicate survey reveals

仿写: 保持 objectivity 时要使用 neutral reporting verbs(say、report、indicate)而非 emotionally charged ones(claim、admit、confess)。Present competing views with equal weight, avoid adjectives that betray bias。当 report opinions 时,clearly attribute them to sources。模版:[Survey/Study/Group] shows/indicates/reveals that [factual finding], with [specific group] [neutral verb] [their position/attitude].

第2段-3 explore possible answers(advocates' view vs drivers' concerns),第4段-5 provide expert resolution(trust will grow with familiarity)。这种 problem-solution structure 实际上是一个 extended response 到这个 central question, guide readers through the complexity of the issue。

信号词 why how what explains the question is this raises but why what accounts for how can we understand the puzzle is

仿写: 构建 question-driven narrative 时,可以在 opening 中 present puzzling data 或 contradictions that naturally provoke questions。然后 systematically address these questions through subsequent paragraphs。可以使用 'why'、'how'、'what explains' 等结构,或直接 let data create the puzzle。模版:[Surprising/contradictory data], raising questions about [core issue]. [Paragraph 2] [one perspective], while [Paragraph 3] [contrasting view], ultimately [resolution/expert insight].

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
Automakers and tech companies are working hard to offer the first true self-driving car. But 75% of drivers say they wouldn't feel safe in such a vehicle.

But However Yet Nevertheless Nonetheless Still Though

这个 but 背后的 implication 非常 profound:尽管 automakers 和 tech companies 正在 invest heavily 并且 work hard,但 consumer trust 这个 fundamental prerequisite 还没有 establish 起来。

    P1
But 75% of drivers say they wouldn't feel safe in such a vehicle. Still, 60% of drivers would like to get some kind of self-driving feature

Still Nonetheless Even so All the same That said At the same time On the other hand

这个 still 揭示了一个 crucial psychological insight:consumers 虽然 distrust full autonomy,但他们对 partial automation 是 open 的。 这为后面 John Nielsen 提出的"comfort level will increase"提供了 data foundation,同时也 support 了文章的 underlying argument:self-driving future 不是 impossible,只是需要 time 和 strategic approach。

    P2
Advocates of self-driving cars argue they would be safer than cars driven by humans because they wouldn't get distracted or drive when tired.

情态词类 argue... would be would be could be might be should be may be argue that

这里的 implication 非常 subtle:通过把 safety argument 标记为 advocates 的 position 并使用 would be 这个 conditional form,文章在 subtly distance itself from this claim。它没有说 self-driving cars are safer,而是说 advocates argue they would be,这暗示这个 safety benefit 目前还是 theoretical 而非 empirically proven。 这为后面提到的"technology is too new and unproven"提供了 linguistic foreshadowing。

    P3
Advocates of self-driving cars argue they would be safer... But those surveyed by AAA say they trust their own driving skills.

But However In contrast On the contrary Conversely Meanwhile Whereas

这个 but 的 deep implication 是:public resistance 并非 irrational fear,而是基于 self-confidence in their own abilities。Drivers trust their own skills 这为下一段 John Nielsen 指出"drivers may be overestimating their own abilities"做了 perfect setup,形成了一个 problem-diagnosis narrative arc。

    P3
Many feel the technology is too new and unproven.

模糊限制语 too new and unproven too new unproven untested uncertain unclear not yet established

Too new and unproven 这个 phrase 的 implication 是 drivers 的 skepticism 有 rational basis —— 这不是 blind resistance to change,而是 prudent caution about adopting untested technology。 同时,这个 implication 也 set up 了 article's solution narrative:既然问题是 insufficient proof,那么解决方案就是 more exposure and demonstrated reliability over time。这完美地 bridge 到最后一段关于"comfort level will increase in 5-10 years"的 prediction。

    P4
John Nielsen, AAA's managing director of automotive engineering and repair, said tests suggest drivers may be overestimating their own abilities.

情态词委婉表达类 may be overestimating might be mistaken could be wrong perhaps underestimating possibly overconfident seem to overlook appear to ignore

May be overestimating 这个 carefully worded statement 的 implication 非常 powerful:它 tactfully refute 了前面 drivers trusting their own skills 的 rationale。通过 citing test results 和用 may 这个 modal,Nielsen 在 suggest 人们的 self-confidence 可能是 misplaced,而 self-driving tech 的 safety advantage 可能确实 valid。对 article's main narrative 来说,这个 expert intervention 是 turning point —— 它 shift 了 discussion from "people don't trust tech" to "people's self-assessment may be flawed"。这个 implication 为文章的 ultimate message 做了 crucial preparation:trust will grow not just because tech improves,而是因为 people will realize their own limitations through experience with automated features。

    P4
He also believes they will be more likely to trust self-driving cars as they become more familiar with features such as automatic braking or parking.

条件因果类 as they become more familiar with as they become more familiar once they experience when they get used to after repeated exposure through gradual adoption with increasing experience

As they become familiar 这个 phrase 的 deep implication 是:trust gap 的 solution 不是 better marketing 或 more safety data,而是 experiential learning through incremental exposure。提到 automatic braking and parking 这些 specific features 暗示了一个 clear strategy:让人们先 experience 可控的 partial automation,通过 positive experiences gradually build confidence toward full autonomy。对 article's conclusion 来说,这个 implication 非常关键,它 explain 了为什么 60% want some features 这个 earlier data point 是 hopeful sign —— 因为 partial adoption 是通向 full acceptance 的 necessary pathway。这让文章的 main message 从"people don't trust self-driving cars"变成"trust will develop through strategic, gradual adoption"。

    P5
He estimated that the "comfort level" will increase considerably in five to ten years.

情态词委婉类 estimated... will increase estimated projected anticipated expected forecasted predicted

Estimated... 5 to 10 years 这个 carefully hedged projection 的 implication 是:虽然 expert 相信 trust will grow,但这需要 substantial time 并且 outcome 不是 certain。Five to ten years 这个 relatively long timeframe 暗示 current 75% distrust 不会 quickly disappear。对文章 main point 来说,这个 ending 非常 strategic —— 它既 acknowledge 了 serious current challenges (需要这么长时间),又 maintain 了 cautious optimism (will increase considerably)。 它避免了 both excessive pessimism 和 unfounded hype, which aligns perfectly with 整篇文章的 measured, data-driven tone。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

第2段 presents 呈现 advocates' viewpoint 支持者观点(safer、wouldn't get distracted),第3段 presents 呈现 skeptical drivers' viewpoint 持怀疑态度的司机观点(trust own skills、technology too new),这种 equal treatment 平等对待显示作者 not taking sides 没有站队

作者 channel 通过 expert voice 专家声音来 provide analysis 提供分析(drivers may be overestimating、will be more likely to trust),而不是 directly assert 直接断言自己的 opinion 观点。

  • say P3

"say" 是典型的 neutral reporting verb 中立报道动词,作者用它来 attribute 归因 surveyed drivers 被调查司机的 opinions 观点(trust own skills、technology too new),而不是 endorse 认可或 challenge 质疑这些 views 观点,保持 journalistic distance 新闻距离

同类词 report indicate show reveal state

  • argue P2

  • but P3

同类词 however yet still nevertheless on the other hand

  • said P4

"Said" 引入 expert John Nielsen 的 professional assessment 专业评估,作者用这个 most neutral 最中立的 attribution verb 归因动词来 distance himself 使自己保持距离from Nielsen's opinions 尼尔森的观点(drivers overestimating abilities),只 reporting 报道而不 endorsing 背书

同类词 stated noted commented remarked observed

  • estimated P5

"Estimated" 表明 Nielsen 的 prediction 预测(comfort level will increase)是 tentative judgment 暂时性判断而非 definitive fact 确定性事实,作者通过这个词 maintain distance 保持距离from the claim 从这个主张,不 present it as certainty 不把它呈现为确定性

本文第一段就 throw out numbers,这是 news reporting 的 signature move。

News reports 必须 maintain objectivity,所以会 present different sides of an issue without explicitly taking sides。Argumentative essays 会 clearly favor one position,而 explanatory articles 通常只 describe one systematic view。这里的 advocates argue vs. those surveyed say 的 juxtaposition 是典型的 news balance。

Argumentative essays 的 author 直接 present arguments, explanatory articles 可能 cite research 但不会这么 prominently feature individual experts with job titles。这里用 said、estimated 这些 reporting verbs 来 introduce quotes。

综合来看,这篇文章 exhibit 所有 news reporting 的 hallmarks:data-driven opening、balanced presentation、source attribution、absence of authorial argument。它不 try to convince(所以不是 argumentative),也不 systematically explain how things work(所以不是 explanatory),而是 inform readers about current situation and opinions。
