Where do you think you will be in ten years? It's difficult to know exactly where you will be and what you will be doing. But everyone dreams about the future. You might imagine the job you will get when you finish school. You may daydream about meeting your life partner or live in a big house by the sea.

In my dreams, I would have twins, a boy and a girl. We would live in a large two-story house with floors and the staircase made of wood. Now, at the age of 46, I look back on those dreams and smile. Things haven't turned out exactly as imagined. But I wouldn't change what I have now for that imaginary world. In college, I studied international business, and planned to enter a law school. In my third year of university, I realized that I didn't want to become a lawyer. I chose to become a language teacher. I did get married, but had more than two children. We had five. Do I live in the dream house with wooden floors? No, I don't. But I love my home and I wouldn't want to live in any other place.

I believe that as a young person, it's important to dream and make plans. However, it's also important to realize that not all of your plans will turn out exactly as you wish. One of the biggest lessons I have learned in life is this: Be happy with what you have.

3 段逐段主旨与解读

逐段拆解2017年12月英语四级真题第2套 的这篇原文——每段给出英文段落主旨、段落标题与中文解读,并提炼一条「这段为什么这样读」的具体方法。

  1. P1

    Dreaming About the Future

The paragraph introduces people's common dreams and uncertainties about the future.

    本段作为全文的 opening,把读者共同拥有的 future dreams 放在前面,使后文作者个人梦想与现实的比较更容易引发共鸣,并自然引向文章“接受真实人生”的主题。

    抓概括句与例子
  2. P2

    From Dreams to Real Life

The author contrasts her youthful dreams with her different but satisfying real life.

    本段是全文的 narrative body,借由职业、子女和住房三个生活细节,把抽象的“未来未必如愿”具体化;更重要的是,它用积极的 attitude 证明幸福并不取决于梦想是否被原样实现。

    对照梦想与现实
  3. P3

Be Happy with What You Have

The author concludes that people should dream realistically and be happy with what they have.

Which of the following is mentioned as something people may imagine about their future?

    • A Winning a scholarship to study abroad.
    • B Becoming a successful lawyer.
    • C Meeting a life partner.
    • D Having exactly two children.
    • E Buying a house with a wooden staircase.
    • F Changing careers after graduation.

What did the writer decide to do after realizing they did not want to become a lawyer?

    • A Study international business.
    • B Enter a law school.
    • C Work as a business consultant.
    • D Become a language teacher.
    • E Stay at home to raise five children.
    • F Become a lawyer after graduation.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:D

人物先 planned to enter a law school,后在 university 的第三年 realized that she did not want to become a lawyer,紧接着明确说 I chose to become a language teacher。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 biggest lessons learned in life

What is one of the biggest lessons the writer has learned in life?

    • A Always follow the career plan made in college.
    • B Avoid making plans for the future.
    • C Choose a house that matches every childhood dream.
    • D Have no more than two children.
    • E Be happy with what one has.
    • F Refuse to change when life turns out differently.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:E

作者在结尾明确以 One of the biggest lessons I have learned in life is this

这个 opening paragraph 通过 rhetorical questions 引发 readers 的思考,描述了 everyone 对 future 的 dreams 和 imagination,比如 dream job、life partner、dream house 等具体的 visions,为后文的 personal story 做铺垫和 contrast。

通过 past vs present 的 juxtaposition,展现了 life's unexpected turns,但最后用 I wouldn't change 和 I wouldn't want 表达了 acceptance 和 contentment。

这个 sense group 是主旨的 concrete embodiment,用 specific examples 来 illustrate 主旨中提到的 unexpected turns 和 deviations from imagined plans。通过 chronological narration 从 college 到 age 46 的 journey, readers 能清晰看到 dreams 和 reality 之间的 gap,同时也感受到作者最终的 acceptance 和 appreciation,为下一段的 reflection 提供 factual basis。

    具体经历展开
  3. 总结人生感悟

这个 concluding paragraph 从 personal narrative 上升到 universal wisdom,作者 explicitly states her belief 和 life lesson。用 I believe 开头明确 shift 到 reflective mode,强调 young people 需要 dream 和 make plans,但更重要的是学会 accept 当 plans 不完全 turn out as expected 时的 reality,最后点明 core lesson:be happy with what you have。

这个 sense group 是整个 narrative 的 thematic resolution,把前面的 personal story 转化为 generalizable wisdom。它直接呼应主旨中的 learned to embrace their actual life 和 find happiness in what they have,用 explicit statement 明确表达了作者的 philosophical stance,让整篇记叙文不仅仅是 story-telling,而是有 meaningful takeaway 的 reflective narrative。

MAIN IDEA ·

第二段的 but I wouldn't change 和 not all of your plans 直接揭示了 deviation 偏离,这是 thematic turning point 主题转折点

  3. 提取结尾反思教训句 P3

记叙文的主旨 message 通常在 conclusion 结尾处被 explicitly stated 明确陈述。第三段的 I believe 和 One of the biggest lessons 是典型的 thematic revelation 主题揭示标志,直接点明 Be happy with what you have 这一 central insight 核心洞见

  4. 验证三段叙事逻辑 P1 P2 P3

完整的记叙文主旨判断需要 verify 验证三段式 progression 递进是否 coherent 连贯。本文从 dreams about future 到 things haven't turned out exactly 再到 be happy with what you have,形成完整的 reflective journey 反思之旅

主旨信号词 wouldn't change P2 not exactly P2 lesson P3 Be happy with P3 smile P2

MAIN IDEA · 主旨

  • daydream 白日梦;做白日梦

让我们把这些 clues 串联起来。首先,从 sentence structure 看,daydream 和 imagine、dream 形成 parallel pattern,说明它们是 similar mental activities。其次,从 word formation 看,day + dream 这个 compound 告诉我们这是发生在白天的 dream-like activity。最后,从 object content 看,daydream about meeting life partner 这样的 pleasant scenarios 表明这是一种 positive、voluntary 的想象。

首先,grammatical structure 非常明确:twins 后面的 appositive 直接解释它就是 a boy and a girl 这两个 children。其次,numerical logic 通过 two vs. five 的 contrast 确认了 twins 的 quantity 是 two。最后,contextual semantics 显示这是一种 idealized、special 的 sibling relationship,用一个 specific term 来表达。综合这三点,twins 指的是同时出生的两个孩子,通常翻译为双胞胎。

RHETORIC · 修辞手法

2 处修辞手法与仿写

每处修辞给出它在本文的具体用法、同类信号词清单与一份可直接套用的 写作仿写建议——读完能认,也能写。

  • 顺叙

    P1 P2

作者采用了 chronological order 来展开整个 narrative,从 youth 时期的 dreams 和 imagination,到 college years 的 career planning 和 decision-making,再到 at the age of 46 时的 reflection 和 realization。这种 linear timeline 让读者能够 follow 作者的 life journey,清晰地看到 dreams versus reality 的 contrast,从而更好地理解文章的 central message:learning to appreciate what you have。顺叙的运用使得 personal growth 和 attitude transformation 显得更加 natural 和 convincing。

信号词 In my dreams In college In my third year Now at the age of When I was Back then Years ago At that time Later Eventually Finally Today Looking back

仿写: 当你想要展现 life journey 或者 personal growth 时,可以思考:哪些 time markers 能够清晰地 mark 你的 narrative stages?比如本文使用了 'In my dreams'(过去设想)、'In college'(大学时期)、'In my third year'(转折点)、'Now, at the age of 46'(现在回顾)。建议选择 3-5 个 significant time points,每个 point 对应一个 key event 或 realization。模版:[Time marker 1] + [Initial dream/plan] → [Time marker 2] + [Action/choice] → [Time marker 3] + [Turning point] → [Present reflection] + [Lesson learned]。

  • 细节描写

    P1 P2

作者使用了 vivid details 来 bring the dream to life:'twins, a boy and a girl'、'large two-story house'、'floors and the staircase made of wood'。这些 concrete and sensory details 让 reader 能够 visualize 作者曾经的 ideal life。同时作者也给出了 reality 的 specific details:'five children' 而不是笼统地说 'a family','third year of university' 而不是简单说 'in college'。这种 specificity 让整个 narrative 更加 authentic 和 convincing,使得 final reflection 更有 weight。细节描写让抽象的 'dreams versus reality' 这个 theme 变得 tangible 和 memorable。

仿写: 要让你的 narrative 更加 vivid,问自己这些问题:What specific numbers, colors, textures, or sizes can I include? 不要说 'a nice house',说 'a two-story house with wooden floors'。不要说 'children',说 'five children' 或 'twins, a boy and a girl'。选择那些能够 trigger visual imagination 的 details。但要注意 selectivity:不是所有 details 都重要,选择那些 support your theme 或 create meaningful contrast 的 details。模版:Instead of [general term], use [specific number/material/characteristic] + [concrete noun]. For example: 'a large house' → 'a large two-story house with wooden floors and staircase'。

IMPLIED MEANING · 言外之意

6 处话里有话

作者没有明说、但靠信号词传递出来的态度与暗示——每处给出原文片段、信号词类型与解读。

  • 理想与现实的差距暗示

    P1
It's difficult to know exactly where you will be

模糊限制语 exactly precisely quite entirely completely totally fully

这个 implication 的核心是:作者通过 'difficult to know exactly' 这个 expression 暗示 future planning 存在 inherent uncertainty。表面上是在 describe 预测未来的 difficulty,实际上是在 plant a seed,为后文的 'dreams versus reality' theme 做 preparation。这种 subtle hint 对 narrative 的作用是 create anticipation,让 reader 开始 wonder 作者自己的 experience 会如何 deviate from plans,从而 naturally lead into 作者的 personal story 和最终的 life lesson about accepting reality。

  • 梦想具体化的反衬

    P2
In my dreams, I would have twins, a boy and a girl. We would live in a large two-story house

情态词 would could might should may

这段的 implication 是作者 deliberately presents detailed, specific dreams 用 'would' structure,暗示这些都是 unrealized visions。Every specific detail,像 twins、boy and girl、two-story house、wooden floors,越 concrete 就越 emphasize 后文 reality 的 divergence。这种 technique 对 narrative function 的价值在于 build up reader's expectation,让 subsequent revelation of actual life circumstances 产生 stronger impact。通过 vivid hypothetical details 和 later simple reality 的 juxtaposition,作者 effectively convey 她的 central message about acceptance。

  • 计划改变的委婉暗示

    P2
In my third year of university, I realized that I didn't want to become a lawyer

认知动词 realized understood recognized discovered found out came to see figured out

此处的 subtext 是作者 implicitly acknowledging 她在 law school path 上 invested time and energy before changing direction。'Third year' 的 specific timing detail 暗示这不是 casual decision,而是在 significant commitment 之后的 major pivot。这个 implication 对 narrative theme 的价值在于 demonstrate flexibility 和 self-awareness 的重要性。它 supports 最终的 message that rigid adherence to original plans 可能不如 adapting to self-discovery。这种 turning point 是作者 life philosophy 形成的 critical moment。

  • 转折中的满足暗示

    P2
Things haven't turned out exactly as imagined. But I wouldn't change what I have now for that imaginary world

转折类 But but however yet nevertheless nonetheless still

这个 implication 的 essence 是作者 subtly conveying 她的 contentment despite life 没有 follow original script。表面看是 acknowledge deviation,实际上通过 'wouldn't change' 这个 strong assertion 表达 deep satisfaction。这种 indirect affirmation 比 direct statement 'I'm happy' 更 powerful,因为它 acknowledges complexity 同时 affirm choice。对 narrative function 而言,这是 transition 到 final wisdom 的 crucial step,它 demonstrate 作者不是 settling for less,而是 genuinely valuing what she has,从而为 concluding message about happiness 提供 authentic foundation。

  • 理论与实践的让步关系

    P3
it's important to dream and make plans. However, it's also important to realize that not all of your plans will turn out exactly as you wish

让步类 However however while whereas even though although despite

此处的 implicit message 是作者 carefully balancing 鼓励 young people 的 dreams 与 preparing them for reality。表面平等地 present 两个 'important' points,但 'however' 的 usage 和 'not all plans will turn out exactly' 的 specific warning 显示她 prioritize practical wisdom。这个 subtext 对 narrative purpose 关键,因为它 prevent 误读她的 message as nihilistic。她不是说 don't dream,而是 dream with flexibility。这种 nuanced position 使 concluding lesson 'be happy with what you have' 更 persuasive,因为它 grounded in realistic optimism rather than blind acceptance。

  • 人生教训的强调暗示

    P3
One of the biggest lessons I have learned in life is this: Be happy with what you have

程度强调类 One of the biggest one of the biggest the most important the greatest the key the primary the main

这个 implication 的 depth 在于作者 explicitly labeling 她的 insight as 'biggest lesson',这 strongly signals 前面所有 details about dreams、career changes、family size 都是 supporting evidence for this conclusion。'In life' 这个 broad scope 暗示这个 wisdom 超越 specific circumstances,是 universal applicable。对 narrative coherence 而言,这个 marked conclusion 完成了从 personal anecdote 到 general principle 的 transformation,使整个 story 成为 persuasive argument。通过 foreground 这个 lesson,作者 ensure reader 不仅 understand her story,更 internalize its significance,这是 narrative essay 的 ultimate goal。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

  • smile P2

这个 smile 微笑是 author 作者在 looking back 回顾 past dreams 过去梦想时的 emotional response 情感反应,表明她对 gap between expectation and reality 期望与现实的差距持有 gentle, accepting attitude 温和接受的态度,而非 disappointment 失望或 regret 遗憾。

同类词 laugh grin beam chuckle pleased expression

  • wouldn't change P2

这个 double negative structure 双重否定结构(wouldn't change 不会改变)是 strongest positive signal 最强积极信号,表明 author 作者不仅 accept 接受 current reality 当前现实,而且 actively prefer 主动偏好它胜过 imaginary ideal 想象的理想。

同类词 wouldn't trade wouldn't exchange wouldn't give up prefer to keep satisfied with

  • love P2

Strong positive emotion verb 强烈积极情感动词 love 热爱直接 express 表达作者对 current home 当前家的 deep affection 深厚感情,这是 present reality 当下现实而非 past dream 过去梦想,说明 attitude 态度是 appreciative of what is 感激拥有的而非 longing for what isn't 渴望没有的。

同类词 adore cherish treasure value appreciate

  • Be happy with what you have P3

这是 explicit life lesson 明确人生教训,作者直接 state 陈述其 core belief 核心信念。这个 imperative statement 祈使句不仅 reveal 揭示作者自己的 attitude 态度,也是她想 convey 传达给 readers 读者的 philosophy 人生哲学,表明 contentment 满足是 deliberate choice 主动选择而非 passive resignation 被动妥协。

同类词 be happy with what you have be content with your lot appreciate what you've got be grateful for what is find joy in the present

  • One of the biggest lessons P3

这个 superlative marker 最高级标记(biggest lessons 最重要的教训)signal 标志着 author 作者要 introduce 引入其 most valued insight 最珍视的领悟,接下来的内容必然是 central attitude 核心态度的 concentrated expression 集中表达。

同类词 one of the biggest lessons the most important thing what I've learned the key takeaway my main realization

  • however P3

这个 contrast connector 对比连接词 however 然而在 acknowledging 承认 planning 计划的 importance 重要性后引入 counterpoint 相反观点,表明作者的 attitude 态度不是 one-sided idealism 片面理想主义,而是 balanced realism 平衡的现实主义。

同类词 but yet nevertheless nonetheless still

GENRE · 速判体裁

30 秒判定这是一篇记叙文

体裁决定读法与出题套路。以下判断步骤与标志词全部以本文为例,可直接迁移到其他英语四级 真题文章。

如何快速判断这是一篇记叙文?

  1. 人称代词识别 P1 P2

这篇文章的 opening 就用了 you 和大量的 future tense 比如 will be, will get, 这种 direct address 和 personal tone 是记叙文的典型特征,而议论文 argumentative writing 倾向用 third-person,说明文 expository writing 更 impersonal,新闻报道 news report 则保持 objective distance

  2. 时间线索追踪 P2

第二段出现了明显的 temporal progression,从 dreams about future 到 now at 46 years old 再到 look back,还有 in college, in my third year 这些 specific time references,这种 chronological storytelling 是记叙文的 backbone,而议论文关注 logical argument structure,说明文关注 categorical organization,新闻报道用 inverted pyramid structure

  3. 个人经历细节 P2

文章充满了 specific personal details 比如 I studied international business, I realized I didn't want to become a lawyer, We had five children, 这些都是 concrete events from personal life,而议论文会提供 evidence and reasoning,说明文会解释 processes or concepts,新闻报道会报道 facts objectively

  4. 个人感悟总结 P3

第三段明确出现了 reflection statement,用 I believe 和 One of the biggest lessons I have learned,这种 personal takeaway 是记叙文的 typical ending pattern,它不是在 call for action 像议论文,也不是在 summarize information 像说明文,更不是新闻报道的 objective conclusion

  5. 特征组合验证 P1 P2 P3

这篇文章同时具备了 all four narrative markers,从 you/I pronouns 到 chronological life story 到 specific personal details 再到 lesson learned,这个 combination 明确指向记叙文 genre,如果是议论文会有 clear thesis statement 和 supporting arguments,如果是说明文会 focus on explaining 而非 storytelling,如果是新闻会保持 objectivity 而非 subjectivity
