How Work Will Change When Most of Us Live to 100

Today in the United States there are 72,000 centenarians(百岁老人). Worldwide, probably 450,000. If current trends continue, then by 2050 there will be more than a million in the US alone. According to the work of Professor James Vaupel and his co-researchers, 50% of babies born in the US in 2007 have a life expectancy of 104 or more. Broadly the same holds for the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Canada, and for Japan 50% of 2007 babies can expect to live to 107.

Understandably, there are concerns about what this means for public finances given the associated health and pension challenges. These challenges are real, and society urgently needs to address them. But it is also important to look at the wider picture of what happens when so many people live for 100 years. It is a mistake to simply equate longevity(长寿) with issues of old age. Longer lives have implications for all of life, not just the end of it.

Our view is that if many people are living for longer, and are healthier for longer, then this will result in an inevitable redesign of work and life. When people live longer, they are not only older for longer, but also younger for longer. There is some truth in the saying that "70 is the new 60" or "40 the new 30." If you age more slowly over a longer time period, then you are in some sense younger for longer.

But the changes go further than that. Take, for instance, the age at which people make commitments such as buying a house, getting married, having children, or starting a career. These are all fundamental commitments that are now occurring later in life. In 1962, 50% of Americans were married by age 21. By 2014, that milestone(里程碑) had shifted to age 29.

While there are numerous factors behind these shifts, one factor is surely a growing realization for the young that they are going to live longer. Options are more valuable the longer they can be held. So if you believe you will live longer, then options become more valuable, and early commitment becomes less attractive. The result is that the commitments that previously characterized the beginning of adulthood are now being delayed, and new patterns of behavior and a new stage of life are emerging for those in their twenties.

Longevity also pushes back the age of retirement, and not only for financial reasons. Yes, unless people are prepared to save a lot more, our calculations suggest that if you are now in your mid-40s, then you are likely to work until your early 70s; and if you are in your early 20s, there is a real chance you will need to work until your late 70s or possibly even into your 80s. But even if people are able to economically support a retirement at 65, over thirty years of potential inactivity is harmful to cognitive(认知的) and emotional vitality. Many people may simply not want to do it.

And yet that does not mean that simply extending our careers is appealing. Just lengthening that second stage of full-time work may secure the financial assets needed for a 100-year life, but such persistent work will inevitably exhaust precious intangible assets such as productive skills, vitality, happiness, and friendship.

The same is true for education. It is impossible that a single shot of education, administered in childhood and early adulthood, will be able to support a sustained, 60-year career. If you factor in the projected rates of technological change, either your skills will become unnecessary, or your industry outdated. That means that everyone will, at some point in their life, have to make a number of major reinvestments in their skills.

It seems likely, then, that the traditional three-stage life will evolve into multiple stages containing two, three, or even more different careers. Each of these stages could potentially be different. In one the focus could be on building financial success and personal achievement, in another on creating a better work/life balance, still another on exploring and understanding options more fully, or becoming an independent producer, yet another on making a social contribution. These stages will span sectors, take people to different cities, and provide foundation for building a wide variety of skills.

Transitions between stages could be marked with sabbaticals(休假) as people find time to rest and recharge their health, re-invest in their relationships, or improve their skills. At times, these breaks and transitions will be self-determined, at others they will be forced as existing roles, firms, or industries cease to exist.

A multi-stage life will have profound changes not just in how you manage your career, but also in your approach to life. An increasingly important skill will be your ability to deal with change and even welcome it. A three-stage life has few transitions, while a multi-stage life has many. That is why being self-aware, investing in broader networks of friends, and being open to new ideas will become even more crucial skills.

These multi-stage lives will create extraordinary variety across groups of people simply because there are so many ways of sequencing the stages. More stages mean more possible sequences.

With this variety will come the end of the close association of age and stage. In a three-stage life, people leave university at the same time and the same age, they tend to start their careers and family at the same age, they proceed through middle management all roughly the same time, and then move into retirement within a few years of each other. In a multi-stage life, you could be an undergraduate at 20, 40, or 60; a manager at 30, 50, or 70; and become an independent producer at any age.

Current life structures, career paths, educational choices, and social norms are out of tune with the emerging reality of longer lifespans. The three-stage life of full-time education, followed by continuous work, and then complete retirement may have worked for our parents or even grandparents, but it is not relevant today. We believe that to focus on longevity as primarily an issue of aging is to miss its full implications. Longevity is not necessarily about being older for longer. It is about living longer, being older later, and being younger longer.

  13. P13

    The End of Age-Based Timetables

As life paths diversify, age will no longer determine when people study, manage, work independently, or enter other life stages.

  14. P14

What is projected to happen to the number of centenarians in the United States by 2050?

    • A It will remain at about 72,000.
    • B It will reach about 450,000.
    • C It will exceed one million.
    • D It will account for 50% of the population.
    • E It will rise only in Japan.
    • F It will fall because people will live longer.

原文用 more than a million in the US alone 明确给出预测,正确项将其同义改写为 exceed one million。

What mistake does the author warn against when discussing longevity?

    • A Recognizing health and pension challenges.
    • B Discussing public finances urgently.
    • C Expecting people to live for 100 years.
    • D Treating longevity merely as a problem of old age.
    • E Considering the wider implications of long lives.
    • F Linking longer lives to changes in all countries.

该项对应 simply equate longevity with issues of old age,并用 merely 概括 simply 的限制意味。

According to the author, what will longer and healthier lives inevitably bring about?

    • A An earlier retirement age.
    • B A shorter period of youth.
    • C The disappearance of old age.
    • D A guaranteed increase in income.
    • E A redesign of work and life.
    • F The end of technological change.

原文以 will result in an inevitable redesign of work and life 直接作答。

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 age of marriage Americans

What does the change in the age of marriage among Americans illustrate?

    • A Americans are less likely to get married.
    • B People now marry before starting a career.
    • C Home ownership has become more common.
    • D Most Americans were married by 29 in 1962.
    • E Marriage is no longer a fundamental commitment.
    • F Fundamental commitments are being made later in life.

该项概括段落中心句 these commitments are now occurring later in life,婚龄后移正是其中一个例证。

  5. 第 5 段 定位词 early commitment longer life

Why does a belief in a longer life make early commitment less attractive?

    • A Because options become more valuable when they can be kept longer.
    • B Because young people have fewer choices than before.
    • C Because early commitments guarantee financial success.
    • D Because marriage is becoming legally impossible.
    • E Because people expect to retire much earlier.
    • F Because adulthood has become shorter.

Apart from financial reasons, why may people postpone retirement?

    • A They will receive larger pensions after 65.
    • B A very long period of inactivity can harm cognitive and emotional vitality.
    • C Their industries will no longer change.
    • D They are legally required to work until 80.
    • E They want to avoid saving money.
    • F Retirement has no effect on personal well-being.

该项对应 over thirty years of potential inactivity is harmful to cognitive and emotional vitality,是非财务理由的直接改写。

    让步后抓伤害 扫描 第6段 的 financial reasons 后,跳过中间年龄计算,直接找 But even if。

  7. 第 7 段 定位词 extending full-time careers drawback

What is the likely drawback of simply extending full-time careers?

    • A It will make financial assets impossible to secure.
    • B It will reduce the need for new skills.
    • C It may exhaust productive skills, vitality, happiness, and friendship.
    • D It guarantees an appealing career.
    • E It eliminates the need for retirement.
    • F It makes people physically younger.

选项完整对应 persistent work will inevitably exhaust precious intangible assets,并列举四项具体资产。

  8. 第 8 段 定位词 single period of education long career

Why can a single period of education no longer support a long career?

    • A Universities will stop offering courses.
    • B People will work for fewer than 60 years.
    • C Childhood education is harmful.
    • D Technological change can make skills unnecessary or industries outdated.
    • E All jobs will become independent work.
    • F Long careers require less investment in skills.

选项准确压缩 either your skills will become unnecessary, or your industry outdated 的双重后果。

What is likely to characterize the future life structure described by the author?

    • A One continuous career focused only on financial success.
    • B Three fixed stages shared by everyone.
    • C Retirement immediately after university.
    • D A career confined to one city and sector.
    • E Multiple stages involving two, three, or more careers.
    • F No need to build a variety of skills.

  10. 第 10 段 定位词 sabbaticals between life stages

What may people do during sabbaticals between life stages?

    • A Remain in the same role without interruption.
    • B Avoid all contact with friends.
    • C Guarantee that their industries survive.
    • D Complete their only period of education.
    • E Eliminate all forced transitions.
    • F They may rest and recharge their health, re-invest in their relationships, or improve their skills.

  11. 第 11 段 定位词 increasingly important multi-stage life

What skill will become increasingly important in a multi-stage life?

    • A The ability to deal with and welcome change.
    • B The ability to avoid all career transitions.
    • C The ability to retire at a fixed age.
    • D The ability to rely on a narrow network.
    • E The ability to reject new ideas.
    • F The ability to remain in one industry forever.

Why will multi-stage lives create extraordinary variety among people?

    • A Everyone will follow the same sequence of stages.
    • B There are many possible ways to sequence the stages.
    • C People will all retire at the same age.
    • D Technological change will stop completely.
    • E There will be fewer choices in education.
    • F Only young people can enter new stages.

选项对应 because there are so many ways of sequencing the stages,并与第二句 possible sequences 互相印证。

  13. 第 13 段 定位词 age and life stage relationship

What change will occur in the relationship between age and life stage?

    • A Each stage will be tied to one fixed age.
    • B All undergraduates will be 20 years old.
    • C The close association between age and stage will end.
    • D Managers will retire within a few years of one another.
    • E Independent producers can only be young adults.
    • F University education will disappear.

首句结论压例证 在 第13段 用 age and stage 直取段首的 end of the close association。

What does the author believe longevity is really about?

    • A Being older for a longer time only.
    • B Maintaining the traditional three-stage life.
    • C Solving pension problems without changing work.
    • D Living longer, becoming older later, and staying younger longer.
    • E Retiring completely at the age of 65.
    • F Preventing people from changing careers.

It is about living longer, being older later, and being younger longer,完整保留三层含义。障碍是作者先说 not necessarily about being older for longer,考生必须读到 It is about 的正面定义。

这个 opening section 通过 concrete statistics 和 demographic data 引出了 longevity 这个 central topic,用 centenarians 的数量增长和 life expectancy projections 来 establish 文章讨论的 foundation,为后续关于 work and life transformation 的 argument 做 background setup

这个 introductory part 通过 presenting 百岁人口的 dramatic increase 来 establish 讨论的 urgency 和 relevance,让读者意识到 longevity 不再是 rare phenomenon 而是 coming reality,从而为主旨中关于 work and life structures 需要 fundamental transformation 的 argument 提供 factual basis

这个 argument section 提出 longevity 会导致 inevitable redesign of work and life,用 'younger for longer' 这个 concept 来 challenge traditional age perceptions,并通过 marriage, house buying 等 major commitments 的 delay 来 demonstrate 人生 milestones 正在 shift,说明 young people 因为意识到会 live longer 而 postpone commitments,形成 new life stage

它 establish 了一个 key premise:longer lifespan 不只是 延长 old age,而是 reshape 整个 life course,为后续关于 multi-stage careers 和 continuous reinvestment 的 arguments 提供 logical foundation

这个 argument block 聚焦于 career length 和 retirement,指出 financial 和 cognitive reasons 都会 push back retirement age,人们可能需要 work into 70s or 80s。但同时 argue 仅仅 extending traditional career 并不 appealing,因为会 exhaust intangible assets like vitality and happiness,揭示了 simply lengthening work 的 limitation

这个 section 为主旨中的 'multi-stage careers' necessity 提供 justification,通过 pointing out 传统 full-time continuous work model 的 unsustainability 来 create 对 alternative solution 的 need。它 function as 一个 problem statement,为后续提出的 multi-stage life 作为 solution 做 setup

这个 focused paragraph argue 传统的 single-shot education model 无法 support 60-year career,因为 technological change 会让 skills become obsolete,所以 everyone 必须在 life course 中进行 multiple major reinvestments in skills,建立 continuous learning 的 necessity

这个 concise argument 直接 support 主旨中 'requiring continuous skill reinvestment' 的部分,通过 technological obsolescence 这个 concrete rationale 来 justify 为什么 multi-stage life 必须 include learning stages。

这个 solution-oriented section 提出 three-stage life 会 evolve into multi-stage life with multiple careers,每个 stage 可以有 different focus(financial success, work-life balance, exploration 等),stages 之间有 transitions and sabbaticals,这种 structure 会 create extraordinary variety 和 end the close association of age and stage,让人们可以在 any age become student, manager, or independent producer

这个 extensive section 是主旨的 core elaboration, directly present 'multi-stage careers with flexible transitions' 这个 central solution。它 detail 了 how life will be restructured, what possibilities exist, and what skills matter,把前面的 problems and needs 转化为 concrete vision。这是整个 argument 的 climax, where thesis fully unfolds

这个 concluding paragraph restate 了 current structures 已经 out of tune with longer lifespans,重申 three-stage life model 不再 relevant,并 circle back 到 opening 的 concern,强调 longevity 不应该 primarily viewed as aging issue,而是关于 living longer, being older later, and being younger longer,实现 thematic closure

这个 conclusion 通过 restating central thesis 来 reinforce 主旨,并且 elevate 讨论到 conceptual level,强调 paradigm shift in thinking about longevity。它 provide closure 的同时也 leave reader 思考 broader implications,让主旨的 transformational message 更加 impactful and memorable

MAIN IDEA ·

议论文的 title 往往就是 thesis statement 的浓缩版本,first paragraph 会用 concrete data 来 establish the reality of the issue。这篇文章的 title 直接说 'How work will change',opening paragraph 用 centenarian statistics 来 ground the discussion,让我们立刻知道这是关于 longevity impact 的讨论。

第3段 中的 'Our view is that' 就是典型的 position indicator,后面紧跟 'inevitable redesign of work and life' 这个 core argument。

第4段-13 分别讨论了 delayed commitments、extended careers、continuous education、multi-stage life structure、transitions、adaptability skills、sequence variety 和 age-stage decoupling。每个 paragraph 的 first sentence 通常是 mini-thesis,支撑 overall argument。

第14段 用 'we believe' 再次标记 authorial stance,然后说 'to focus on longevity as primarily an issue of aging is to miss its full implications',这个 negative framing 突出了 core message:longevity 不只是 aging issue,而是 fundamental transformation。Conclusion 通常会 crystalize what the entire argument has been building toward。

  5. 这个 four-step method 覆盖了议论文的 complete architecture:introduction establishes context, thesis states position, body develops arguments, conclusion synthesizes message。每一步都 target specific textual markers,让我们能在 minimal time 内 extract maximum understanding。这不是 linear reading,而是 strategic sampling of key locations。

MAIN IDEA ·

The article argues that increased longevity will fundamentally transform work and life structures. Traditional three-stage lives (education-work-retirement) will evolve into multi-stage careers with flexible transitions, requiring continuous skill reinvestment, adaptability, and redefining age-related milestones to align with longer, healthier lifespans.
WORD INFERENCE ·

我们先从 第2段 的 cause-effect structure 入手,看到 longer lives 导致了 implications for all of life,这里的 for 表示影响的对象范围,说明 implications 是一种 consequences 或 effects。

    先看 第6段,inactivity is harmful to vitality,这个 opposition 告诉我们 vitality 和 activity、motion 是 aligned 的,是一种 active state。 最后从 etymology 看,vit- 就是 life,-ality 是 state,合起来就是 the state of being full of life。三条 clues converge on the same meaning:vitality 就是生命力、活力,一种让人保持 energetic 和 engaged 的内在 quality。

从 morphology 看,trans-(across)+ -it-(go)+ -ion(noun),完美呼应了 the process of moving from one stage to another。

第10段 用 re-invest in relationships 进一步确认,reinvest 就是 put back into。

从 第10段 的 syntactic structure 看,sabbaticals 和 transitions 是紧密相关的,而且通过 as clause 我们知道它是一个 time window for rest, recharge, and re-investment。这些 verbs 都指向 restoration 和 renewal,说明 sabbatical 不是 passive break,而是 active period of personal development。

50% of babies born in the US in 2007 have a life expectancy of 104 or more"。 它们也为后文论证"work and life will be redesigned"提供了现实前提,而不是让作者的观点停留在 speculation 层面。

According to for example for instance such as in particular a case in point statistics show that research indicates that data suggest that

What evidence can make it visible?" According to a recent survey, more than half of college students have taken at least one online course." According to [source], [specific figure or fact], which shows that [your claim]."

信号词 the saying that As the saying goes as X puts it according to X X argues that X points out that researchers have noted that in the words of X

As the saying goes, '...', which suggests that ..."

第8段也指出技术变化会使 skills unnecessary 或 industry outdated,因此人们必须 repeatedly reinvest in their skills。

信号词 if...then because since as a result therefore thus so the result is that that means lead to result in consequently which causes

Why does X produce Y? What happens in between?" Because short videos provide instant stimulation, users become less patient with slow tasks, which may weaken sustained attention." Because/Since [cause], [intermediate change], which leads to [result]."

信号词 but while whereas however in contrast by contrast rather than instead of not...but... on the one hand...on the other hand unlike compared with

What was true in the past, and what is different today?" Traditional education prepares students for one career, whereas modern education must prepare them for repeated transitions." The old model..., whereas the new model..."。

比喻把抽象的教育不足问题转化为"single dose cannot support a long life"的直观画面。

信号词 like as...as as if as though is a are a can be seen as resembles serves as a metaphor for

Education is not a one-time ticket but a lifelong passport." [Abstract idea] is not a [limited image]; it is a [dynamic image] that [explains its function]."

    P4 P9 P13

    第4段列举"buying a house, getting married, having children, or starting a career",第9段连续列出不同人生阶段的目标,第13段则用"an undergraduate at 20, 40, or 60; a manager at 30, 50, or 70"构成整齐排比。

信号词 not only...but also either...or neither...nor and or another still another yet another first...second...third on the one hand...on the other hand

People may study to gain knowledge, to change careers, or to serve society." Some may [verb] to [purpose], others may [verb] to [purpose], and still others may [verb] to [purpose]."

IMPLIED MEANING ·

It is a mistake to simply equate longevity with issues of old age.

(Corrective Denial) It is a mistake to simply equate It is a mistake to It is misleading to It is not just about Contrary to popular belief We should not equate... with...

    P6
there is a real chance you will need to work until your late 70s or possibly even into your 80s.

(Modal Probability) there is a real chance it is likely that might well be could potentially it is highly probable

这里的 implicit message 是告诉 young people 必须做好 work much longer 的心理准备,暗示 traditional early retirement 已成为 impossible dream。

    P8
It is impossible that a single shot of education... will be able to support a sustained, 60-year career.

(Absolute Negation) It is impossible that No longer viable Cannot possibly There is no way Is completely out of date

作者言外之意是说“一次性学习终身受益”的时代 has ended,这种 strong conviction 强化了 reinvestment in skills 成为 life necessity 的核心观点。

    P14
Current life structures... are out of tune with the emerging reality of longer lifespans.

(Mismatch/Contrast) out of tune with inconsistent with no longer relevant at odds with disconnected from

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

  • But P2

在承认public finances和pension的concerns之后,用'But'转折引出'look at the wider picture',说明作者不满足于只谈老龄化问题,而是要strike一个更broader、更positive的视角。

However Yet Nevertheless Still Although

  • Our view is that P3

We believe In our opinion We argue It is our contention that

  • inevitable P3

同类词 will certainly surely undoubtedly bound to

  • harmful P6

  • We believe P14

Our view We contend We argue In our opinion

Title 显示 'How work will change',这是在 address 一个 future transformation,不是 explain what work is(说明文风格)也不是 report a specific workplace incident(新闻报道)。 说明文会 focus on explaining the phenomenon itself,新闻会 report 具体 event,但议论文用 data 作为 springboard 来 launch discussion。

第2段 和 第3段 明确提出 'Our view is that...' 和 'if many people are living for longer... this will result in an inevitable redesign of work and life'。 Our view' 这种 explicit positioning language 是议论文的 hallmark。

  3. 第4段 到 第10段 展现出 clear argumentative structure:每段 present 一个 supporting point(delayed commitments、extended careers、need for re-education、multi-stage life),然后用 examples 和 reasoning 来 elaborate。比如 第5段 用 'options theory' 来 explain why young people delay commitments,这是 logical reasoning 而非 factual description。说明文会 systematically explain components,新闻会 follow timeline,但这里是在 build a case through interconnected arguments。

第11段 到 第14段,尤其是 第14段,明确 state 'Current life structures... are out of tune with the emerging reality' 和 'We believe that to focus on longevity as primarily an issue of aging is to miss its full implications'。这是在 advocate for paradigm shift,不是 conclude by restating facts(说明文)或 end with latest developments(新闻)。最后一句 'It is about living longer, being older later, and being younger longer' 是 reframing the entire issue—典型的 persuasive conclusion。

说明文会保持 neutral explanatory tone throughout,新闻会 maintain objective reporting stance,但这里 author 持续 inject personal view 和 evaluative judgments('it is a mistake to'、'society urgently needs to'、'we believe'),这是 persuasive intent 的 manifestation。
