A pair of entrepreneurs are planning to build and launch a spacecraft that would carry and roast coffee beans in outer space.

The craft will use the heat of re-entry to roast coffee beans as they float inside it in a pressurised tank. The effect would be to roast the beans all over, and produce perfect coffee. The businessmen say that on Earth, beans can easily break apart and get burned in the roaster. But if gravity is removed, the beans float around in a heated oven, receiving 360 degrees of evenly distributed heat and roast to near perfection.

The spacecraft will reach a height of around 200 km. The beans would then be roasted in the heat generated by the craft's 20-minute re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. Temperatures in the pressurised tank will be kept to around 200℃.

Once back on Earth, the planet's first space-roasted beans would be used to make coffee that would be sold for the first time in Dubai. This is where the pair's company is based. It is not clear how much they would charge for a cup.

Surprisingly, the Space Roaster concept—should it go ahead—will not be the first attempt to take coffee into space. In 2015, two Italian companies collaborated on the construction of a similar type of spacecraft, which was the first coffee machine designed for use in space.

SELF CHECK ·

What are the two entrepreneurs planning to do?

    • A They have already launched a spacecraft to sell coffee in Dubai.
    • B They plan to grow coffee plants on a spacecraft.
    • C They plan to build and launch a spacecraft that carries and roasts coffee beans in outer space.
    • D They intend to design a coffee machine for astronauts.
    • E They are preparing to use a spacecraft to transport roasted beans back to Italy.
    • F They want to replace Earth-based coffee roasters with space stations.

正确项完整保留了原文的 future plan:build and launch 对应核心动作,spacecraft 对应载体,carry and roast coffee beans in outer space 对应项目功能。

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 gravity is removed evenly distributed heat

Why do the businessmen believe that coffee beans can be roasted nearly perfectly in space?

    • A Because the pressurised tank raises the temperature above 360°C.
    • B Because the beans are protected from all heat during re-entry.
    • C Because coffee beans are naturally lighter in outer space.
    • D Because the beans can float in a heated oven and receive evenly distributed heat when gravity is removed.
    • E Because Earth-based roasters can no longer heat beans evenly.
    • F Because the spacecraft keeps the beans completely still while roasting them.

20-minute re-entry Earth's atmosphere

Under what conditions will the beans be roasted?

    • A They will be roasted at a height of 200 km for 200 minutes.
    • B They will be roasted before the spacecraft leaves Earth's atmosphere.
    • C They will be roasted in a tank heated to around 20°C.
    • D They will be roasted after the spacecraft has landed in Dubai.
    • E They will be roasted during the spacecraft's 20-minute re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, with the tank kept at around 200°C.
    • F They will be roasted at temperatures of about 200 km.

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 sold for the first time in Dubai charge for a cup

What is known about the planned sale of the space-roasted coffee?

    • A It is already being sold in Dubai at a fixed price.
    • B It will first be sold in Italy because the earlier project was Italian.
    • C It will be offered free to customers at the company's Dubai office.
    • D Its price will be determined by the height reached by the spacecraft.
    • E It will be sold only after the company moves from Dubai to Earth.
    • F It would be sold for the first time in Dubai, but it is not clear how much they would charge for a cup.

正确项准确整合两项原文信息:would be sold for the first time in Dubai 说明计划中的首次销售地点,it is not clear how much they would charge for a cup 说明报道没有提供每杯收费数额。

Italian coffee machine designed for use in space

What did the earlier Italian space project create?

    • A It created the first coffee machine designed for use in space.
    • B It created the first spacecraft to roast coffee beans during re-entry.
    • C It created a coffee shop that first sold space-roasted beans in Dubai.
    • D It created a pressurised tank that kept beans at 200°C.
    • E It created a system for growing coffee beans without gravity.
    • F It created a spacecraft that had already produced perfect coffee.

正确项对应历史项目的产物和用途:the first coffee machine 是核心名词,designed for use in space 是功能限定。

这个 lead paragraph 直接抛出了 newsworthy 的核心 fact:两位 entrepreneurs 计划 build and launch 一个能在 outer space 中 roast coffee beans 的 spacecraft。这是典型的新闻 inverted pyramid structure 的 opening,用最简洁的 one-sentence summary 呈现整个 story 的 who、what、where 等 key elements,立刻抓住 reader 的 attention。

这个 意群 深入 explain 了 how the technology works:spacecraft 利用 re-entry heat 来 roast beans,而 pressurised tank 中的 beans 会 float around 并获得 360-degree evenly distributed heat。通过 contrast Earth-based roasting problems(beans break and burn)和 zero-gravity advantages,这段 provide detailed mechanism 并 justify 为什么 space roasting 能 produce perfect coffee。这是典型的 explanatory body paragraph,用 technical details 来 support the lead。

它通过 describe the physics behind the innovation 来 enhance reader understanding,同时 establish credibility。对于 technology-focused news story,这种 detailed mechanism explanation 是 essential,因为它 answer 了 readers 的 natural question:how does it actually work?这让 abstract concept 变得 tangible and believable。

这种 factual anchoring 是 quality journalism 的 characteristic,它 demonstrate 记者 did the research 并 obtained specific information,而不只是 report vague concepts。

这反映新闻 structure 从 'what and how' 推进到 'where and when',complete 了 story 的 commercial viability dimension。

通过 mention Dubai launch 和 pricing uncertainty,它 acknowledge both the commercial ambition 和 remaining unknowns。这种 balanced reporting 增强了 news credibility,显示记者 not just promoting the idea 而是 providing complete picture。对 readers 来说,这 answer 了 'so what' question:这个 innovation 如何 become actual product。

这个 closing 意群 提供了 contextual background:surprisingly,这不是 first attempt to take coffee to space,2015年 Italian companies 已经 constructed similar spacecraft 和 first space coffee machine。通过 'Surprisingly' 和 historical reference,这段 place 当前 story in broader context,给 readers 提供 perspective。这是新闻 concluding paragraph 的常见 pattern:widen the scope 并 provide historical depth。

它 prevent the story from seeming isolated 或 overly promotional by acknowledging precedents。这种 'not the first' framing 增强了 journalistic objectivity 并给 readers 更 complete understanding of 这个 innovation 在 space food history 中的 position。同时它 leave readers with broader perspective,这是 quality news writing 的 hallmark。

WORD INFERENCE ·

从 context 看,spacecraft 先上升到 200 km,然后进行 re-entry into Earth's atmosphere。

所以 pressurised tank 指的是一个 kept under controlled pressure 的 sealed container,能够在 space 的 vacuum environment 中 maintain internal atmosphere。

从 sentence structure 看,two companies 作为 plural subject 需要一个表示 joint action 的 verb。从 context 看,这个 action 是 on the construction,指向一个 specific shared project。从 preposition 看,on 表示这种 joint work 有明确的 focus。所以 collaborate 的意思是 multiple parties work together on a common goal or project,强调的是 cooperative effort 而不是简单的 communication。

    P1

第一段用 planning to build and launch 这样的 neutral reporting tone 来开门见山地 present the core fact,直接告诉读者 what's happening,这种 straightforward presentation 让主旨一目了然。这个 opening statement 没有加入 opinion 或者 emotional language,只是 state the fact that entrepreneurs have this plan,这种 objectivity 建立了 journalistic credibility,让读者觉得这是 reliable information 而不是 hype。

信号词 are planning will intend to aim to propose to are set to are preparing to

仿写: 写作时要 identify the core news event,然后用 simple declarative sentences 来 state it clearly。避免用 amazing、revolutionary 这类 evaluative adjectives,而是让 facts speak for themselves。仿写模版:「Subject + neutral verb (plan to/intend to/aim to) + action + specific detail」,比如「A team of scientists are planning to develop a device that can...」。

    P3

第三段用 around 200 km、20-minute、around 200℃ 这些 specific numbers 来 establish technical credibility。这些 precise figures 让这个看似 fantastical 的 space coffee concept 变得 concrete and believable。 这些 numbers serve as evidence that supports the feasibility of this venture。

信号词 around approximately about nearly up to reaching at of

仿写: 写作时要 identify measurable aspects of your topic,然后 integrate specific figures naturally into the narrative。 仿写模版:「The [noun] will reach/maintain/achieve [specific number + unit] ... [process] will take/last [time duration] ... [condition] will be kept to [measurement]」,比如「The device will operate at temperatures up to 150°C during its 30-minute cycle」。

通过 reference earlier attempts,作者 situate this new venture within a broader trend of space-based food production。

Surprisingly Notably In fact Interestingly Previously Historically Back in As early as

仿写: 写作时要考虑 what similar things have happened before,然后用 transition words 来 introduce that context。可以用 Surprisingly、Notably、In fact 等词来 signal that you're providing perspective。仿写模版:「[Transition word], this [noun] — should it [condition] — will not be the first [category]. In [year], [entity] [past action], which was [description of precedent]」,比如「Interestingly, this technology — should it succeed — will not be the first attempt to commercialize lunar resources. In 2019, a startup developed...」。

    P2

第二段通过 on Earth 和 if gravity is removed 的 explicit contrast 来 highlight the unique advantage of space roasting。这个 comparison 用 But 连接,清晰地展示了 terrestrial limitations(beans can break apart and get burned)和 space-based solution(360 degrees of evenly distributed heat)之间的差异。这种 juxtaposition 让读者立刻 grasp why this space venture makes practical sense,不只是 gimmick,而是有 real technical benefits。

But However In contrast On the other hand Unlike Whereas While Conversely

仿写: 写作时要 identify what problem exists in current situation,然后 explicitly contrast it with the proposed solution。用 But、However、In contrast 等 transition words 来 mark the shift。仿写模版:「[Description of current limitation]. But [new condition/method], [subject] [verb phrase showing improvement] and [benefit]」,比如「Traditional batteries degrade quickly in extreme heat. But if lithium is replaced with sodium, the cells maintain stability and last significantly longer」。

It is not clear how much they would charge 来 create a moment of uncertainty that engages reader curiosity。这个 statement 虽然不是 direct question,但它 functions like one by raising the issue of pricing。这种 strategic withholding of information 让读者开始 speculate and stay engaged,同时也 acknowledge the realistic concern about commercial viability。它 serve the thesis by showing this is not just a technical experiment but a real business venture with real market considerations。

信号词 not clear remains uncertain unclear unknown yet to be determined remains to be seen the question of it is debatable

仿写: 写作时要 identify aspects that are genuinely unknown or debatable,然后用 it is not clear、it remains uncertain、the question of 等 phrases 来 flag them。不要 overuse this technique,只在 truly significant uncertainties 时使用。仿写模版:「It is not clear/remains uncertain [question clause] ... The question of [noun phrase] has yet to be answered ... Whether [clause] remains to be seen」,比如「It is not clear whether consumers will embrace this technology at scale」。

    P2

第二段中的 The businessmen say that 引入了 entrepreneur's own explanation about the technical process。虽然不是 direct quotation with quotation marks,但这是 reported speech that attributes specific claims to the source。 通过 attribute the scientific reasoning to the businessmen,文章在 maintain objectivity 的同时 present their perspective。

信号词 say that claim that explain that according to state that argue that report that maintain that

仿写: 写作时要 identify whose voice should be heard on particular claims,然后用 reporting verbs(say、claim、explain、argue)来 introduce their perspective。对于 technical or controversial points, especially important to attribute them。仿写模版:「[Source] say/claim/explain that [reported clause] ... According to [source], [statement] ... [Source] argue that [perspective]」,比如「The researchers explain that this approach reduces energy consumption by 40%」。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P2
on Earth, beans can easily break apart and get burned in the roaster. But if gravity is removed, the beans float around in a heated oven, receiving 360 degrees of evenly distributed heat

But but however yet nevertheless nonetheless on the contrary

    P4
It is not clear how much they would charge for a cup.

模糊限制语 not clear unclear uncertain it remains to be seen questionable doubtful ambiguous

这个 not clear 看似是 neutral observation,但 implicitly questions 这个 project 的 commercial viability。

    P5
the Space Roaster concept—should it go ahead—will not be the first attempt

情态词 should it go ahead should if were to would could might

这个 should it go ahead 插入语 undermines 前面 paragraphs 中 seemingly confident 的 project description。虽然放在 parentheses 里显得 casual,但实际上是 journalist injecting doubt into the narrative。

    P5
Surprisingly, the Space Roaster concept—should it go ahead—will not be the first attempt to take coffee into space.

Surprisingly surprisingly ironically unexpectedly curiously remarkably notably

Space Roaster isn't as revolutionary as initially suggested。对 article theme 的作用是提供 reality check,让读者明白虽然这个 business concept 有创意,但 taking coffee to space 不是 unprecedented, thus tempering enthusiasm and adding another layer of skepticism to the overall narrative

    第1段 直接说 a pair of entrepreneurs are planning to build and launch a spacecraft,这是典型的 news lead,呈现了 specific actors 和 their concrete plan。议论文会先提出 a viewpoint 或 claim,说明文会先定义 a concept 或 introduce a general topic,而新闻报道直击 the newsworthy event itself。

第2段 解释 how the craft will work,第3段 提供 technical specifications like height and temperature,第4段 讲 what happens after re-entry,这是典型的 news structure,层层递进地提供 factual details。议论文会用 logical reasoning 和 evidence 来支持 central argument,说明文会用 classification 或 comparison 来阐释 a concept,而这篇文章纯粹在 narrating the plan step by step。

第5段 提到 in 2015, two Italian companies 做过类似的事情,这是 providing historical context for the current news。新闻报道会用 background information 来增强 newsworthiness,让读者明白 why this matters 或 how it fits into a bigger picture。议论文的 supporting paragraphs 是用来 strengthen the argument,说明文的 examples 是用来 illustrate the concept,而这里的 past event 纯粹是 contextual reference,没有 argumentative function 也没有 explanatory function。

整篇文章用 will、would、say 等词汇来报道 the plan and statements,没有 evaluative language 如 should、must、obviously、clearly,也没有 emotionally charged words。即使 surprisingly 出现在 第5段,它只是 acknowledging a fact that might be unexpected,而不是 the author's personal judgment on whether the plan is good or bad。议论文会用 strong stance words 和 persuasive devices,说明文会用 neutral but explanatory language,新闻报道则是 purely descriptive and factual。

如果是议论文,会在开头提出 space roasting is beneficial or problematic 并展开论证;如果是说明文,会定义 what space roasting is 并分类解释 its types or characteristics。但这篇文章只是在报道 a plan that exists,这就是 news reporting 的本质。
