A new study finds that beverages containing added sugar might be harmful.

In the study, researchers analyzed information from over 80,000 women and 37,000 men. Participants worked in the health profession. They were followed for approximately three decades. They completed surveys about their diet every four years. They also answered questions about sleep and exercise and health every two years.

The more beverages containing added sugar that people drank, the greater their risk of death was during the study period.

These beverages included soda, energy drinks and sports drinks. Beverages like pure fruit juice which are sweet but do not contain added sugar were not part of the study.

The findings held even after the researchers considered other factors that could affect people's health. These factors included lack of exercise and not eating enough vegetables. They also included consuming too much meat.

The scientists say that their results support limiting beverages with added sugar. They argue we should replace them with other drinks, with water being the best choice. However, the researchers admit this is simply their recommendation. The study found only an association: It did not prove that drinks with added sugar cause early death.

  1. P1

Study Links Sugary Drinks to Health Harm

A new study reveals a potential health risk associated with sugar-sweetened beverages.

  2. P2

    Large-Scale Long-Term Study Design

The study tracked over 117,000 health professionals for 30 years through regular surveys on diet, sleep, exercise, and health.

这个 methodology section 为文章主旨中的 large-scale 和 tracked for three decades 提供了 concrete evidence。 detailed methodology 也暗示了研究的 rigor,为读者 evaluate the strength of conclusions 提供了依据。

  3. P3

    Dose-Response Relationship Found

Higher consumption of added-sugar beverages correlated with increased mortality risk throughout the study.

  4. P4

    Defining 'Added Sugar' Beverages

The study focused on beverages with added sugar like soda and energy drinks, excluding naturally sweet drinks like pure fruit juice.

这种 specification 也为后续的 recommendation(replace with other drinks)提供了 conceptual foundation——不是所有甜饮料都有害,关键是 added sugar。

  5. P5

Findings Robust After Adjusting for Confounders

The association between sugary drinks and mortality persisted after accounting for other health-related lifestyle factors.

通过说明 findings 不能被 common lifestyle factors 所 explain away,它让读者更有理由 take the results seriously。

  6. P6

    Recommendations with Causal Limitations

Researchers recommend limiting added-sugar beverages and choosing water, while acknowledging the study only shows correlation, not causation.

它直接呼应文章主旨中的 though causation was not proven 这个 qualifier,展示了 responsible science journalism。

SELF CHECK ·

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 new study beverages containing added sugar

What does the new study suggest about beverages containing added sugar?

    • A They are safer than pure fruit juice.
    • B They improve sleep and exercise habits.
    • C They may be harmful to people's health.
    • D They should completely replace water in daily diets.
    • E They have been proved to cause early death.
    • F They are mainly consumed by health professionals.

    该项准确保留了研究结论的核心:对象是 beverages containing added sugar,判断是 may be harmful。

How often did the participants report information about their diet?

    • A Every two years.
    • B Every three decades.
    • C Once a year.
    • D Every four years.
    • E At the beginning and end of the study.
    • F Whenever they consumed sugary drinks.

命题障碍在于同一段还给出 approximately three decades 和 every two years:前者是 follow-up duration,后者修饰 sleep、exercise and health questions。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 risk of death relationship

What relationship was found between consuming added-sugar beverages and the risk of death?

    • A Greater consumption was associated with a lower risk of death.
    • B Only energy drinks were linked to the risk of death.
    • C The risk of death remained unchanged regardless of consumption.
    • D Added-sugar beverages were proved to directly cause death.
    • E Greater consumption was associated with a higher risk of death.
    • F The relationship applied only to men in health professions.

该项准确改写了 the more...the greater... 的正向关系:greater consumption 对应 drank more, higher risk 对应 greater risk。

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 pure fruit juice not included

Why was pure fruit juice not included in the study?

    • A It contains more added sugar than soda.
    • B It was consumed by too few participants.
    • C It was considered less sweet than sports drinks.
    • D It was replaced by water during the study.
    • E It was found to reduce the risk of death.
    • F It is sweet but contains no added sugar.

  5. 第 5 段 定位词 factor evaluating the findings

Which factor was considered by the researchers when evaluating the findings?

    • A Lack of exercise.
    • B Drinking pure fruit juice.
    • C Eating too many vegetables.
    • D Drinking insufficient water.
    • E Working in the health profession.
    • F Having surveys every four years.

What do the researchers recommend as the best replacement for beverages with added sugar?

    • A Pure fruit juice.
    • B Water.
    • C Sports drinks.
    • D Energy drinks.
    • E Beverages with less added sugar.
    • F Meat-free drinks.

研究者建议以 other drinks 替换 beverages with added sugar,并明确指出 water 为 best choice。

第2段 说明 participant pool(超过11万 health professionals)、study duration(约30年)和 data collection methods(每四年 diet surveys,每两年 health questionnaires)。第3段 presents the core finding with specificity:摄入越多 added sugar beverages, death risk 越高。

这个意群 clarifies the scope, explicitly 说明 what beverages were included(soda、energy drinks、sports drinks)和 what were excluded(pure fruit juice without added sugar)。这是 definitional precision, helps readers understand 研究针对的是 added sugar specifically,而不是 all sweet drinks。

这种 clarification 也 demonstrates 研究的 rigor, showing that researchers made deliberate distinctions about what to study,从而 strengthens 主旨的 credibility。

第5段 addresses potential confounding factors,说明即使 considered 其他 health-affecting variables(lack of exercise、insufficient vegetables、excessive meat),the findings 仍然 held true。这个意群 reinforces 研究的 validity, shows that the association 不是由 other lifestyle factors 造成的。它 strengthens the causal suggestion,虽然还不能 prove causation。

通过 demonstrate that researchers controlled for alternative explanations,这个意群 significantly enhances 研究结论的 robustness。 By showing the association persists after accounting for these factors,它让主旨中的 'association between sugar drinks and mortality' 更加 convincing, narrowing the gap between correlation and causation。

最后一段 serves multiple functions:scientists 提出 practical recommendation(limit added sugar drinks, replace with water),acknowledge study limitations(只发现 association 而非 causation),并 characterize their suggestion as recommendation rather than proven fact。这是典型的 news conclusion, balancing actionable advice with scientific caution, showing both the implications 和 the boundaries of the research。

这个意群 completes the news narrative by translating research into practice。它 answers 'So what should we do?'(drink water instead)while maintaining scientific integrity by acknowledging causation wasn't proven。这种 balanced conclusion reinforces 主旨中的 'association found' while adding the crucial caveat that 'causation not proven',demonstrating responsible science journalism that informs without overstating。

MAIN IDEA ·

新闻报道遵循 inverted pyramid structure,最关键的 main idea 通常在首段 first paragraph 直接呈现,尤其是涉及 scientific research 的报道会用 'A new study finds/shows' 这类 opening formula 直接点明研究发现

主旨中强调了 'large-scale study' 和 'over 117,000 health professionals tracked for three decades',这些 quantitative details 不是随意提及的,而是支撑 research findings 可信度的关键 evidence。

第三段的 'The more beverages...the greater their risk of death' 是对首段 'might be harmful' 的 concrete elaboration,它用 dose-response relationship 的形式具体化了主旨中的 'association between consuming beverages and increased mortality risk'。

第六段包含两个关键要素:researchers 的 recommendation ('limiting beverages', 'replace with water') 和 crucial limitation ('only an association', 'did not prove causation')。主旨精准地概括了这两点 ('recommend limiting... though causation was not proven'),体现了科学报道中 finding 与 interpretation boundary 的重要性

主旨实际上是将 第1段 的 general topic ('beverages with added sugar might be harmful')、第2段 的 research scale ('117,000 professionals, three decades')、第3段 的 specific finding ('association with mortality')、第6段 的 recommendation 和 limitation ('recommend... though not proven') 整合成一个 coherent summary。

首先,through specific examples 我们知道 soda、energy drinks 这些都是 beverages。

First,通过 referential clue,我们知道 participants 指代那些被研究的 men and women。Second, behavioral description 显示他们 actively engage in survey completion and question answering。

让我们 connect these dots。

    P2

文章通过 precise numerical data 来建立 credibility:over 80,000 women 和 37,000 men 构成了 massive sample size, approximately three decades 的 follow-up period 确保了 longitudinal reliability。

信号词 over 80,000 37,000 three decades every four years every two years approximately more than less than up to as many as

仿写: 写作时要 identify key metrics 并 present them prominently。 仿写模版:「In the study, researchers analyzed information from [具体人数] participants. They were followed for [具体时长]. They completed [调查类型] every [具体频率]」。记住 numbers should serve the narrative,不要 overwhelm readers with excessive data。

    P4

文章通过 clear distinction 来 narrow down the scope:beverages containing added sugar(soda, energy drinks, sports drinks)与 pure fruit juice 形成 explicit contrast。这个 differentiation 对主旨至关重要,因为它 clarifies what type of beverages 与 increased mortality 有 association。通过说明 pure fruit juice 虽然 sweet 但 were not part of the study,作者 prevents potential misunderstanding,让 conclusion 更加 precise and actionable。

信号词 but do not contain however while whereas in contrast on the other hand unlike different from rather than instead of

先 present the target group(with specific examples in parentheses),然后用 transitional phrases 引出 excluded items。仿写模版:「These [目标类别] included [例子A, 例子B, 例子C]. [对比类别] like [例子D] which are [共同特征] but do not contain [关键差异] were not part of [研究范围]」。记住 contrast should illuminate,不是 complicate。

    P2 P3 P5

文章用 neutral, factual language 来 present the core finding:"The more...the greater" 这种 correlational statement 没有 emotional coloring 或 exaggeration。 通过 avoiding causal claims,文章 maintains scientific integrity,同时这种 restrained presentation 也为后续的 limitation acknowledgment("did not prove")做了 linguistic groundwork。

信号词 findings results data study research analysis participants information survey factors

仿写模版:「The more [变量A] that people [动作], the greater their [结果B] was during [时间范围]」。避免 modal verbs expressing certainty(must, will definitely),改用 softer expressions(might, could, appears to)。

    P1

文章开篇用 straightforward statement 来 establish the topic:"beverages containing added sugar might be harmful"。这个 concise introduction 为整个 news report 设定了 framework,让读者立即 grasp the subject matter。虽然用了 cautious modal verb "might",但 clear topic statement 确保了后续 detailed findings 都能 tie back to this central concern,支撑文章主旨中关于 sugary beverages 与 mortality risk 之间 association 的核心内容。

A new study finds Recent research shows Scientists discovered A study published in Researchers report According to a study New findings suggest Evidence indicates A survey reveals Data shows

仿写: 开篇 background 应该 balance brevity and informativeness。用 single sentence 概括 research topic 或 key finding,使用 tentative language(might, could, suggests)来 avoid overstatement。仿写模版:「A new study finds that [研究对象] might be [研究发现]」或「Recent research suggests that [现象] could [影响/结果]」。记住 opening sentence 是 hook,要 clear and relevant。

    P6

文章通过 indirect reporting 来 present researchers' views:"The scientists say that...They argue..."。这种 reported speech 让 recommendations(limiting sugary drinks, choosing water)和 limitations(only association, not causation)都能 attributed to the researchers,而非 journalist's opinion。这种 attribution 对主旨中 causation was not proven 这一 critical caveat 的呈现至关重要,它 maintains journalistic objectivity 同时 accurately represents the scientists' cautious stance。

信号词 say that argue admit claim state report suggest maintain acknowledge concede according to researchers note

选择 appropriate verbs 反映 statement strength:中性的用 "say, state, report",有主张的用 "argue, claim, maintain",谨慎的用 "suggest, indicate, admit"。仿写模版:「The scientists say that [观点]. They argue [支持论据]. However, the researchers admit [局限性]」。记住 vary your reporting verbs 来 reflect nuance。

    P5

文章通过 implicit question-answer structure 来 address potential confounds:先提到 association,然后 anticipate reader's doubt("难道不是因为其他因素吗?"),接着用 "The findings held even after..." 来 answer this implicit question。

信号词 even after despite regardless of notwithstanding even when even though in spite of although while controlling for after adjusting for

仿写: 使用 "even after" 或 "despite" 结构来 address alternative explanations。先 present finding,然后用 these phrases 引入 controlled factors。仿写模版:「The findings held even after the researchers considered [其他因素]. These factors included [因素A] and [因素B]. They also included [因素C]」。记住这个 structure 本质上是 answering "but what about X?" without explicitly asking it。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
beverages containing added sugar might be harmful

情态词 might be might may could would seem to appear to

第一段使用 might be harmful 而非 is harmful 或者 are harmful, immediately 设定了整篇文章的 tone:这是一个 correlational study 而非 causal study。这个 hedging 为后文 第6段 中明确说明 'did not prove causation' 做了 foreshadowing。

    P2
Participants worked in the health profession

对比类 health profession profession professionals experts specialists trained qualified

    P2
    followed for approximately three decades

对比类 approximately three decades decades years long-term extended period longitudinal over time

强调 three decades 的 follow-up period 暗示这不是一个 quick or superficial study,而是 rigorous、patient 的 long-term investigation。

    P2
completed surveys about their diet every four years. They also answered questions about sleep and exercise and health every two years

对比类 every four years... every two years every regularly periodically repeatedly consistently continuously

提到 every four years 收集 diet data 和 every two years 收集 health data,暗示研究不是依赖 baseline assessment only,而是 continuously updating information about participants' behaviors 和 health status。这种 repeated measurements approach 能 capture dietary pattern changes, avoid misclassification,提高 exposure-outcome relationship 的 accuracy。对于 main idea,这个设计 strengthens the association 的 validity,虽然仍不能 prove causation,但至少 temporal relationship 和 dose-response pattern 更加 reliable。

    P5
The findings held even after the researchers considered other factors that could affect people's health

让步类 held even after even after even when despite although regardless of in spite of

说 findings held even after 考虑 other factors,暗示作者担心读者会怀疑 association 可能是由于 unhealthy lifestyle 比如 lack of exercise 或者 poor diet overall 造成的,而不是 sugary beverages specifically。通过 addressing 这个 concern 并说明结果 still hold,研究增强了 beverages with added sugar 与 mortality 之间 association 的 independence 和 specificity。对于 main idea,这让 recommendation to limit sugary drinks 更有 targeted basis,不只是 general healthy lifestyle advice。

    P6
However, the researchers admit this is simply their recommendation. The study found only an association: It did not prove that drinks with added sugar cause early death

However however but yet nevertheless nonetheless on the other hand

However 引出的这段话 explicitly states 研究的 fundamental limitation:这是 observational study showing association,不是 randomized controlled trial proving causation。说 researchers admit 和 simply their recommendation,显示出 scientific humility 和 caution。这个言外之意 echoes 开篇的 might be harmful,形成 full circle, reinforces 整篇文章的 main idea:虽然有 strong association supported by large sample 和 long follow-up,但 causality 尚未 established。

    P4
Beverages like pure fruit juice which are sweet but do not contain added sugar were not part of the study

对比类 do not contain added sugar were not part of the study were not did not include excluded not part of omitted left out

这个 distinction 反映出 research question 的 specificity:不是 all sweet beverages are harmful,而是 specifically beverages with added sugar。对于 main idea,这个言外之意 clarifies 研究针对的是 processed sugary drinks 而非 all sources of dietary sugar,让 recommendation to limit sugary drinks 更加 precise 和 actionable,也 hints at possible mechanisms involving processed vs natural sugars。

新闻报道的 opening sentence 通常会 reveal author's stance,如果用 might be harmful 这种 hedging language 而非 is harmful,说明 author 保持了 cautious approach,不做 absolute claims

在 第2段-5 中,author 纯粹 describe the study methodology 和 findings,没有 inject personal opinions。这种 straightforward reporting style 表明 author 在 maintain journalistic objectivity,让 data speak for itself

在 第6段 中,author 不仅 report researchers' recommendation,还特别 emphasize 了 study limitation:'admit this is simply their recommendation' 和 'did not prove...cause'。这种 explicit acknowledgment of limitations 是 balanced reporting 的典型特征

这种 three-part structure 构成了 responsible reporting 的完整框架:neither dismissing the concern(因为确实 report 了 potential harm)nor overstating the evidence(因为 consistently emphasize uncertainty)

  • might be P1

这个 modal verb 'might' 在文章 very first sentence 就 establish 了 tentative tone,表明 author 不是在 make definitive claims,而是 present possibility,这是 responsible science reporting 的体现

同类词 could be may be potentially possibly appears to

  • harmful P1

虽然 'harmful' 是个 negative term,但结合 'might be' 使用时,显示 author 在 report a concern without sensationalizing,既 acknowledge potential danger 又 maintain measured tone

同类词 risk detrimental dangerous negative adverse

  • the greater their risk P3

这个 phrase 以 factual manner 描述 research finding,用 'risk' 而非 'certainty',用 'the greater' 表示 dose-response relationship,这是 objective reporting of statistical findings

同类词 increased risk higher likelihood more susceptible elevated risk correlation

  • support P6

用 'support limiting' 而非 'prove we must limit' 或 'demand limiting',显示 author 在 present researchers' conclusion 时 maintain distance,这是 journalistic objectivity 的体现

同类词 suggest indicate recommend propose point to

  • however P6

这个 contrastive marker 在 presenting researchers' recommendation 之后 introduce limitation,是 author 刻意 create balance 的明确信号,显示 not simply accepting claims at face value

同类词 but yet although though nevertheless

  • admit P6

  • simply P6

'Simply their recommendation' 这个 phrase 通过 'simply' 来 downplay 或 qualify recommendation 的 strength,表明这只是 one interpretation,不是 definitive guidance,体现 author 的 cautious framing

同类词 only merely just purely solely

  • only an association P6

这是整篇文章最关键的 qualifying statement, author 明确 distinguish correlation from causation,这是 scientifically literate reporting 的核心,防止 readers draw wrong conclusions

同类词 correlation not causation linked but not proven associated with rather than caused by observational not causal

    第二段密集呈现了 '80,000 women'、'37,000 men'、'three decades'、'every four years' 等 precise figures 和 research procedures,这是新闻报道 reporting research 的典型特征,而议论文会用 reasoning 和 examples 来论证,说明文则侧重 explanation of concepts

整篇文章中看到的都是 'researchers analyzed'、'the scientists say'、'the study found' 这种 detached reporting tone,新闻报道必须保持 journalistic distance,而议论文作者会用 'we must'、'I believe' 来表达 personal viewpoint

第六段中 'the scientists say'、'they argue'、'their recommendation' 清楚表明这些是 researchers' views 而非 journalist's opinions,更关键的是 'the researchers admit' 和 'did not prove' 这种 acknowledge limitations 的表达,议论文结尾会 strong call to action,说明文则会 summary of key points

新闻报道本质上是 relay factual information about research,它的 core structure 是 'what was found → how it was found → what researchers say about it',完全不同于议论文的 'claim → reasoning → call to action' 和说明文的 'topic → explanation → elaboration' 结构

  • A new study finds P1 研究发布引用词 researchers analyzed The scientists say the researchers admit according to research a report shows
  • In the study P2 研究过程描述词 during the study period Participants worked They were followed They completed surveys in the experiment
