Hi! I am Elizabeth Hoffler, Master of Social Work. I am a social worker, a lobbyist, and a special assistant to the executive director at the National Association of Social Workers. Today we are going to be talking about becoming a social worker. Social work is the helping profession. Its primary mission is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, with a particular focus on those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. We often deal with complex human needs. Social work is different from other professions, because we focus on the person and environment. We deal with the external factors that impact a person's situation and outlook. And we create opportunity for assessment and intervention, to help clients and communities cope effectively with their reality and change that reality when necessary.

In thousands of ways social workers help other people, people from every age, every background, across the country. Wherever needed, social workers come to help. The most well-known aspect of the profession is that of a social safety net. We help guide people to critical resources and counsel them on life-changing decisions. There are more than 600,000 professional social workers in the country, and we all either have a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, or a PhD in Social Work. There are more clinically trained social workers than clinically trained psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses combined.

Throughout this series you will learn more about the profession, the necessary steps to get a social work degree, the rich history of social work, and the many ways that social workers help others. Later in this series, you will hear from Stacy Collins and Mel Wilson, fellow social workers at the National Association of Social Workers. Stacy is going to walk you through the step-by-step process of becoming a social worker, and Mel will tell you about the range of options you have once you get your social work degree, as well as the high standards of responsibility that social workers must adhere to.

The National Association of Social Workers represents nearly 145,000 social workers across the country. Our mission is to promote, protect, and advance the social work profession. We hope you enjoy this series about how you can make a difference by becoming a social worker. Next, we are going to talk about choosing social work.

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 distinguishes other helping professions

What distinguishes social work from other helping professions?

    • A It mainly provides medical treatment for people with mental disorders.
    • B It focuses exclusively on changing clients' personal attitudes.
    • C It considers both individuals and the environmental factors shaping their circumstances.
    • D It gives priority to lobbying for social workers' legal rights.
    • E It serves only people living in poverty.
    • F It replaces clients' decisions with professional intervention.

该项把 person and environment 准确压缩为 individuals 与 environmental factors,并把 impact a person's situation and outlook 合理改写为 shaping their circumstances。

What does the comparison of clinically trained professionals indicate?

    • A Psychiatrists constitute the largest group of clinically trained professionals.
    • B Social workers have the same level of clinical training as psychiatric nurses.
    • C More than 600,000 social workers are all clinically trained.
    • D Clinically trained social workers outnumber psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses combined.
    • E Psychologists and psychiatric nurses together outnumber social workers.
    • F Only social workers need advanced degrees for clinical practice.

Mel Wilson later in the series

What topic will Mel Wilson address later in the series?

    • A The step-by-step procedure for becoming a social worker.
    • B The historical origins of the social work profession.
    • C Ways to guide clients to critical community resources.
    • D The National Association of Social Workers' campaign to recruit members.
    • E The career options available after earning a social work degree and the profession's standards of responsibility.
    • F Clinical methods for treating psychiatric patients.

该项完整对应 range of options you have once you get your social work degree,并保留 as well as 连接的第二层信息 high standards of responsibility。earning 是 get 的自然改写,career options 概括 range of options。

National Association of Social Workers mission

What is the stated mission of the National Association of Social Workers?

    • A To represent nearly 145,000 social workers in every country.
    • B To provide basic necessities directly to people in poverty.
    • C To ensure that all members obtain a social work degree.
    • D To train social workers to become special assistants and lobbyists.
    • E To persuade more people to choose social work as a career.
    • F To promote, protect, and advance the social work profession.

    该项完整保留 mission 后的三个并列目标 promote、protect 和 advance,以及作用对象 the social work profession。

这个 opening segment 通过 self-introduction 引出了 social work 这个 helping profession 的 primary mission,强调它 focuses on enhancing human well-being 和 meeting basic needs,特别关注 vulnerable populations。讲解者 highlights 了 social work 的 unique characteristic,就是关注 person and environment 的 interaction,处理 external factors 来 create opportunities for assessment and intervention。

它通过 defining what social work is 和 what makes it different,让 readers 建立起对这个 profession 的 initial understanding,为后续展开 the scope、requirements 和 organizational support 做好 preparation。

这个 sense group 从 definition 转向了 concrete illustration,描述 social workers 如何 help people from every age and background,强调他们作为 social safety net 的 well-known role。 600,000 professional social workers in the country,都拥有 bachelor's, master's, or PhD degrees,而且 clinically trained social workers 的数量 exceeds 其他 mental health professionals combined。

这个 sense group 通过 providing concrete examples and statistical evidence 来 substantiate 前面的 definition。它回答了 "How extensive is this profession?" 和 "What do social workers actually do?" 这些 questions,用 quantitative data 和 broad scope description 让 the profession 显得更 tangible and credible, supporting the main idea 关于 social work 作为 dedicated helping profession 的 significance。

这个 sense group 执行 meta-textual function,介绍整个 series 的 structure and content。它 outlines 后续会讲什么:the profession details、steps to get a degree、rich history、以及 the many ways social workers help。同时 introduces 两位 fellow social workers(Stacy Collins 和 Mel Wilson),说明他们会分别讲解 step-by-step process 和 career options with professional standards。

它通过 previewing upcoming content 和 introducing additional speakers,让 readers 了解 how the information will be structured and delivered。

这个 concluding sense group 介绍了 the National Association of Social Workers,说明它 represents 将近 145,000 social workers,其 mission 是 to promote, protect, and advance the profession。最后 expresses hope 读者 enjoy this series about making a difference by becoming a social worker,并 previews 下一个 topic 是 choosing social work。

这个 closing sense group 通过 introducing the sponsoring organization 为整个 introduction 提供 institutional credibility and context。它强调了 professional support structure 的存在,reinforcing the idea 这是一个 well-established and supported profession。The forward-looking statement("Next, we are going to talk about...")creates continuity 并 motivates engagement with the series。

MAIN IDEA ·

说明文的 introduction 通常会在开篇就明确 define the subject,这篇文章的 first sentence 直接点明身份 'Master of Social Work',紧接着用 'Social work is the helping profession' 给出 definition,然后通过 'Its primary mission is to...'

第二段通过 'In thousands of ways'、'people from every age, every background' 以及具体的数字 'more than 600,000 professional social workers' 来展现 profession 的 scale 和 reach。这些 scope-expanding expressions 和 statistical evidence 表明文章不仅在 define,更在 demonstrate the significance and scope,这是说明文 elaborating on the subject 的重要特征

第三段和第四段大量使用 'Throughout this series you will learn'、'Later in this series'、'Next, we are going to talk about' 这类 forward-looking language,这是 expository introduction 的明确标志。这种 meta-commentary 表明当前文本是 an introductory overview,主旨必然是 presenting the subject and its framework 而非 deep analysis

将前三步整合:首段给出 'social work as helping profession with specific mission',第二段展现 'scope through numbers and universality',后两段通过 'series preview' 确认 introductory nature。这个 three-layer structure (define → expand → preview) 是说明文 comprehensive introduction 的标准 pattern,主旨必然遵循 'This text introduces X by defining it, outlining its scope, and previewing further exploration' 的框架

主旨信号词 primary mission P1 helping profession P1 more than 600,000 P2 Throughout this series P3 represents P4

其次,从word formation来看,lobby(交流聚集的场所)+ -ist(从事某活动的人)suggests someone who engages in communication活动。最后,considering她work for a professional association,这个role很可能involves representing the organization's interests。综合这三条线索,我们可以reasonably infer:lobbyist是从事lobbying activity的professional,specifically在政策制定者和组织之间act as a bridge,advocate for certain positions。

    我们来connect the dots。从semantic grouping,oppressed和vulnerable、poverty处于same category of disadvantage,但可能intensity更强。从morphology,op-(against) + press(压) + -ed暗示被压制的passive state。从social work context,这个词describes那些face external systemic barriers的people。Put it all together:oppressed指的是受压迫的、被系统性地denied权利或机会的群体,比simple vulnerability更强调权力关系的imbalance。

从syntactic pairing,intervention是assessment的natural follow-up,是从diagnosis到action的转变。从word structure,inter-(between) + ven(come) + -tion描绘的是step into a situation的动作。从social work philosophy,这个term appears in context of actively helping people change their reality。

现在我们integrate these clues。从immediate context, must adhere to表达的是obligation to maintain某种relationship with standards。从morphological connection to adhesive,这个词carries the image of sticking to something,不脱离。从broader professional context,这是在discuss ethical standards和responsibility。综合起来:adhere means坚持、遵守,特别是在professional or ethical standards的context中,表示consistently follow and maintain commitment to某些principles。

    P1

文章开篇就给 social work 下了一个 precise definition,指出它是 the helping profession,其 primary mission 是 enhance human well-being 和 meet basic needs。这个 definition 非常 comprehensive,不仅说明了职业的 nature,还明确了 target population(vulnerable, oppressed, living in poverty)。

信号词 is means refers to is defined as can be described as represents consists of primary mission is

然后用 'X is...' 或 'The primary mission of X is to...' 的句式来 construct your definition。 [Topic] is [category] that [distinguishing features]. Its primary mission/purpose is to [core function], with a particular focus on [specific target/aspect].'

    P1

在 第1段 中,作者通过 'Social work is different from other professions' 这个 explicit comparison 来 highlight social work 的 uniqueness。作者指出 social work focuses on 'person and environment' 以及 'external factors',这与其他 professions 形成 contrast。这个 comparative strategy 的 value 在于通过 differentiation 来 sharpen the profile,让读者更 clearly understand what makes social work distinctive。Comparison 不仅说明 'what it is',更重要的是说明 'what it is NOT',从而 enhance comprehension through contrast。

信号词 different from unlike in contrast to compared to whereas while on the other hand rather than instead of

然后选择一个 appropriate reference point for comparison。可以用 'unlike...', 'different from...', 'in contrast to...' 来 introduce the contrast,接着 specify the exact differences。 [Subject A] is different from [Subject B], because [Subject A] focuses on [distinctive feature], while [Subject B] [alternative approach]. This difference means [implication/significance].'

    P2 P4

在 第2段 中,作者 strategically deploys two key statistics:'more than 600,000 professional social workers' 和 '145,000 social workers' (in 第4段)。这些 quantitative data 给抽象的 profession 提供了 concrete scale and magnitude。特别是 'more clinically trained social workers than clinically trained psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses combined' 这个 numerical comparison 极具 persuasive power,用 hard numbers 来 demonstrate the profession's dominance in clinical training。Numbers 的作用是 add credibility, transform abstract claims into verifiable facts,让读者 sense the real-world impact。

信号词 more than nearly over approximately about around 600,000 145,000 combined

仿写: 在说明文中 incorporate numbers 时,要确保它们 serve a clear purpose:proving scale, showing growth, making comparisons。选择 meaningful and impressive numbers,而不是 random statistics。 There are [specific number] [subject] in [scope]. This represents [significance/comparison]. In fact, [comparative statement with numbers to emphasize the scale/importance].'

    P2

虽然文章没有用 explicit 'for example' 这样的 markers,但在 第2段 中 'people from every age, every background, across the country' 和 'Wherever needed, social workers come to help' 这些 statements 实际上是在 enumerate various scenarios and populations。这种 implicit enumeration 通过 listing diverse contexts 来 illustrate the breadth and universality of social work。这个 illustrative approach 让抽象的 'helping profession' 变得 concrete and relatable,帮助读者 visualize real-world applications。

信号词 for example for instance such as including like ranging from from... to... every various

可以用 diverse examples 来 show range,或用 typical examples 来 show common patterns。 [General statement]. [Specific example 1], [specific example 2], and [specific example 3] all demonstrate [the principle]. This shows that [implication or broader meaning].'

    P2

在 第2段 中,作者将 social workers 按 educational qualifications 进行 categorization:'bachelor's degree, a master's degree, or a PhD in Social Work'。这个 classification 不仅 organize information systematically,还 establish the profession's educational standards and hierarchies。通过 breaking down 这个 large group into distinct categories based on credentials,读者能 understand the profession's structure and requirements more clearly。Classification 的 value 在于它 imposes order on complexity,让信息更 digestible and memorable。

信号词 or either... or... can be divided into fall into categories include types of kinds of classified as ranging from... to...

确保 categories are mutually exclusive 且 collectively exhaustive。可以用 'can be divided into', 'fall into categories', 'types include' 等 expressions。 [Subject] can be categorized into [number] types based on [criterion]: [Category 1], [Category 2], and [Category 3]. Each type is characterized by [distinguishing feature].'

    P1

We deal with the external factors that impact a person's situation and outlook' 和后续的 'we create opportunity for assessment and intervention' 是对前面 'we focus on the person and environment' 的 elaborative explanation。这种 interpretive elaboration 将 concise statement 展开为 more detailed and specific description, clarifying exactly what 'person and environment focus' entails in practice。作诠释的 function 是 unpack dense concepts, providing the additional context and details 读者需要 to fully comprehend the initial statement。

信号词 that is in other words this means specifically namely to put it another way what this means is

仿写: 使用作诠释时,先 make a concise statement,然后 follow up with 'That is', 'In other words', 'This means', 或直接用 'We...' 来 provide specifics。确保 elaboration 真正 add value by providing concrete details, mechanisms, or implications。 [Initial statement]. [Elaboration that specifies how/what/why]. This [explanation/approach/method] allows/enables [practical outcome or significance].'

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
Its primary mission is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, with a particular focus on those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.

强调递进类 with a particular focus on especially particularly specifically above all most importantly in particular

虽然表面说 enhance all people's well-being,但 particular focus 这个 phrase 揭示了 implied message:social work 的 distinguishing feature 不是服务所有人,而是 prioritize vulnerable populations。这个 implication 对 main idea 的作用是 define the profession's unique identity——不是 generic helping,而是 advocacy-oriented work focused on inequality。

    P1
Social work is different from other professions, because we focus on the person and environment. We deal with the external factors that impact a person's situation and outlook.

对比区分类 different from unlike in contrast to whereas while others distinguished by sets us apart

Surface meaning 是说 social work has a different focus,但 implication 是:other helping professions(可能指 psychology、psychiatry)采用 narrow、individual-focused approaches,而 we take a holistic view。这个 subtext 对 article's purpose 很关键——不只是 describe social work,而是在 establish its superiority through implicit comparison。通过暗示其他 professions 忽视 external factors,文章 justify why social work is necessary 和为什么 readers should consider this career over alternatives。

    P2
There are more than 600,000 professional social workers in the country, and we all either have a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, or a PhD in Social Work. There are more clinically trained social workers than clinically trained psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses combined.

数量对比强调类 more than over outnumber exceed surpass greater than larger than

表面是 providing statistics about workforce size,但 underlying message 是 preemptively addressing doubts:social work 不是 niche 或 less established profession。特别是说 more than psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses combined,这个 implication 很强——we're not just helpers,we're the largest clinical workforce。这对 main purpose(recruiting students)至关重要:通过 quantitative evidence 暗示 job market is robust、profession is respected、career choice is safe。The subtext counters potential concerns about job prospects without explicitly raising those concerns,这是非常 sophisticated 的 persuasive technique。

    P3
Throughout this series you will learn more about the profession, the necessary steps to get a social work degree, the rich history of social work, and the many ways that social workers help others.

未来承诺类 will learn more about you will hear going to walk you through will tell you about coming up in the following next we will cover

字面意思是 previewing series content,但 implied message 是 establishing authority and completeness:从 necessary steps 到 rich history 到 range of options,这个 comprehensive coverage promise 暗示 readers need not consult other sources。特别是提到 fellow social workers at NASW will provide guidance,这 implies insider expertise。对 main goal 的作用是 build confidence in the information source 和 encourage continued engagement。The subtext addresses a potential concern:是否 this text provides enough information to make career decision?通过 promise future depth,作者 assure readers 他们在 right place,这是 subtle persuasion to commit to reading the entire series。

    P4
Our mission is to promote, protect, and advance the social work profession.

三元并列强调类 promote, protect, and advance support, defend, and strengthen develop, safeguard, and expand advocate, preserve, and enhance build, maintain, and grow create, protect, and sustain

Surface level 是 describing NASW's mission,但 protect 这个 word 的 inclusion reveals subtext:social work profession needs protection,暗示 external threats exist(可能是 funding cuts、public misunderstanding、professional encroachment)。 通过把 protect 夹在两个 positive verbs 之间,作者 downplay the defensive aspect while ensuring readers understand NASW serves as guardian。这种 balanced messaging 对 target audience(potential students)很重要:既要 show opportunities,也要暗示 professional organization 在 safeguarding their future careers,这 builds trust while maintaining optimistic tone。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

Today we are going to be talking about becoming a social worker'。

本文 methodically explains 'what is social work',包括 its mission ('enhance human well-being')、its unique focus ('person and environment')、以及 how it differs from other professions。这种 structured explanation of nature and function 是说明文的核心。议论文会 argue for or against something,新闻报道会 report events chronologically。

本文提供了 quantitative facts 如 'more than 600,000 professional social workers'、'bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD'、'145,000 social workers' 等。这些 data 是为了 illustrate the scale and structure of the profession,不是为了 prove a debatable point。

第三段明确说 'Throughout this series you will learn more about... the necessary steps... the rich history... and the many ways',这是典型的 content preview。说明文常用 signposting 来 guide readers through information。议论文可能有 thesis statement 但不会如此 detailed preview of explanatory content,新闻报道 follow inverted pyramid structure 而非 announce future sections。

本文具备所有 expository markers:speaker establishes expertise, defines social work objectively, provides scope through statistics, previews learning journey。整体 tone 是 informative 和 educational,没有 persuasive language (should, must, argue) 或 news reporting elements (breaking news, recent events, quotes from sources)。

  • Social work is different from other professions, because we focus on the person and environment.

  • Wherever needed, social workers come to help.

  • Next, we are going to talk about choosing social work.
