Countries Rush for Upper Hand in Antarctica

On a glacier-filled island with fjords(峡湾) and elephant seals, Russia has built Antarctica's first Orthodox church on a hill overlooking its research base. Less than an hour away by snowmobile, Chinese labourers have updated the Great Wall Station, a vital part of China's plan to operate five bases on Antarctica, complete with an indoor badminton court and sleeping quarters for 150 people. Not to be outdone, India's futuristic new Bharathi base, built on stilts(桩子) using 134 interlocking shipping containers, resembles a spaceship. Turkey and Iran have announced plans to build bases, too.

More than a century has passed since explorers raced to plant their flags at the bottom of the world, and for decades to come this continent is supposed to be protected as a scientific preserve, shielded from intrusions like military activities and mining. But an array of countries are rushing to assert greater influence here, with an eye not just towards the day those protective treaties expire, but also for the strategic and commercial opportunities that already exist.

The newer players are stepping into what they view as a treasure house of resources. Some of the ventures focus on the Antarctic resources that are already up for grabs, like abundant sea life. South Korea, which operates state-of-the-art bases here, is increasing its fishing of krill(磷虾), found in abundance in the Southern Ocean, while Russia recently frustrated efforts to create one of the world's largest ocean sanctuaries here.

Some scientists are examining the potential for harvesting icebergs from Antarctica, which is estimated to have the biggest reserves of fresh water on the planet. Nations are also pressing ahead with space research and satellite projects to expand their global navigation abilities.

Building on a Soviet-era foothold, Russia is expanding its monitoring stations for Glonass, its version of the Global Positioning System (GPS). At least three Russian stations are already operating in Antarctica, part of its effort to challenge the dominance of the American GPS, and new stations are planned for sites like the Russian base, in the shadow of the Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity.

Elsewhere in Antarctica, Russian researchers boast of their recent discovery of a freshwater reserve the size of Lake Ontario after drilling through miles of solid ice. "You can see that we're here to stay," said Vladimir Cheberdak, 57, chief of the Bellingshausen Station, as he sipped tea under a portrait of Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, a high-ranking officer in the Imperial Russian Navy who explored the Antarctic coast in 1820.

Antarctica's mineral, oil and gas wealth is a longer-term prize. The treaty banning mining here, shielding coveted(令人垂涎的) reserves of iron ore, coal and chromium, comes up for review in 2048. Researchers recently found kimberlite(金伯利岩) deposits hinting at the existence of diamonds. And while assessments vary widely, geologists estimate that Antarctica holds at least 36 billion barrels of oil and natural gas.

Beyond the Antarctic treaties, huge obstacles persist to tapping these resources, like drifting icebergs that could jeopardise offshore platforms. Then there is Antarctica's remoteness, with some mineral deposits found in windswept locations on a continent that is larger than Europe and where winter temperatures hover around minus 55 degrees Celsius.

But advances in technology might make Antarctica a lot more accessible three decades from now. And even before then, scholars warn, the demand for resources in an energy-hungry world could raise pressure to renegotiate Antarctica's treaties, possibly allowing more commercial endeavours here well before the prohibitions against them expire. The research stations on King George Island offer a glimpse into the long game on this ice-blanketed continent as nations assert themselves, eroding the sway long held by countries like the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

Being stationed in Antarctica involves adapting to life on the planet's driest, windiest and coldest continent, yet each nation manages to make itself at home. Bearded Russian priests offer regular services at the Orthodox church for the 16 or so Russian speakers who spend the winter at the base, largely polar scientists in fields like glaciology and meteorology. Their number climbs to about 40 in the warmer summer months. China has arguably the fastest-growing operations in Antarctica. It opened its fourth station last year and is pressing ahead with plans to build a fifth. It is building its second ice-breaking ship and setting up research drilling operations on an ice dome 13,422 feet above sea level that is one of the planet's coldest places. Chinese officials say the expansion in Antarctica prioritises scientific research, but they also acknowledge that concerns about "resource security" influence their moves.

China's newly renovated Great Wall Station on King George Island makes the Russian and Chilean bases here seem outdated. "We do weather monitoring here and other research," Ning Xu, 53, the chief of the Chinese base, said over tea during a fierce blizzard(暴风雪) in late November. The large base he leads resembles a snowed-in college campus on holiday break, with the capacity to sleep more than 10 times the 13 people who were staying on through the Antarctic winter. Yong Yu, a Chinese microbiologist, showed off the spacious building, with empty desks under an illustrated timeline detailing the rapid growth of China's Antarctic operations since the 1980s. "We now feel equipped to grow," he said.

As some countries expand operations in Antarctica, the United States maintains three year-round stations on the continent with more than 1,000 people during the southern hemisphere's summer, including those at the Amundsen-Scott station, built in 1956 at an elevation of 9,301 feet on a plateau at the South Pole. But US researchers quietly complain about budget restraints and having far fewer icebreakers than Russia, limiting the reach of the United States in Antarctica.

Scholars warn that Antarctica's political drift could blur the distinction between military and civilian activities long before the continent's treaties come up for renegotiation, especially in parts of Antarctica that are ideal for intercepting(拦截) signals from satellites or retasking satellite systems, potentially enhancing global electronic intelligence operations.

Some countries have had a hard time here. Brazil opened a research station in 1984, but it was largely destroyed by a fire that killed two members of the navy in 2012, the same year that a diesel-laden Brazilian barge sank near the base. As if that were not enough, a Brazilian C-130 Hercules military transport plane has remained stranded near the runway of Chile's air base here since it crash-landed in 2014.

However, Brazil's stretch of misfortune has created opportunities for China, with a Chinese company winning the $100 million contract in 2015 to rebuild the Brazilian station.

Amid all the changes, Antarctica maintains its allure. South Korea opened its second Antarctic research base in 2014, describing it as a way to test robots developed by Korean researchers for use in extreme conditions. With Russia's help, Belarus is preparing to build its first Antarctic base. Colombia said this year that it planned to join other South American nations with bases in Antarctica.

"The old days of the Antarctic being dominated by the interests and wishes of white men from European, Australasian and North American states are over," said Klaus Dodds, a politics scholar at the University of London who specialises in Antarctica. "The reality is that Antarctica is geopolitically contested."

SELF CHECK ·

China's updated Great Wall Station

What feature was included in China's updated Great Wall Station?

    • A An Orthodox church.
    • B Interlocking shipping containers.
    • C An indoor badminton court.
    • D A new monitoring station.
    • E A research drilling operation.
    • F A satellite project.

Why are countries seeking greater influence in Antarctica?

    • A They must protect a scientific preserve.
    • B They intend to end all scientific research.
    • C They are preparing military activities.
    • D They want future and current strategic and commercial opportunities.
    • E They are commemorating early explorers.
    • F They want to reduce commercial opportunities.

该项压缩复现了 not just...but also 的双层逻辑:一是 protective treaties expire 后的未来,二是 already exist 的现实战略与商业机会。

转折后双目的 锁定 第2段 后,跳过历史与 treaty 的定义,直接找 but 后的谓语 rushing to assert,并将其后的 with an eye...but also...

South Korea increasing its fishing

What Antarctic resource is South Korea increasing its fishing of?

    • A Iron ore.
    • B Fresh water.
    • C One of the world's largest ocean sanctuaries.
    • D Oil and natural gas.
    • E Krill in the Southern Ocean.
    • F Kimberlite deposits.

South Korea is increasing its fishing of krill,并补充其 abundant 的分布海域。

What ability are satellite projects intended to expand?

    • A The harvesting of icebergs.
    • B Fresh water reserves.
    • C Military activities.
    • D Ocean sanctuaries.
    • E Offshore platforms.
    • F Their global navigation abilities.

Nations are also pressing ahead...

Glonass stations challenge

What is Russia trying to challenge through its Glonass stations?

    • A The dominance of the American GPS.
    • B The Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity.
    • C Russia's monitoring stations.
    • D Global navigation abilities.
    • E The Russian base.
    • F The Southern Ocean.

原文以 challenge the dominance of the American GPS 明示竞争目标,题干与原句几乎同构。

  6. 第 6 段 定位词 drilling through solid ice recently discover

What did Russian researchers recently discover after drilling through solid ice?

    • A An ice dome 13,422 feet above sea level.
    • B A freshwater reserve the size of Lake Ontario.
    • C Kimberlite deposits.
    • D A new ocean sanctuary.
    • E The Antarctic coast.
    • F A Brazilian research station.

  7. 第 7 段 定位词 come up for review banning mining

When will the treaty banning mining in Antarctica come up for review?

    • A In 1820.
    • B In 1956.
    • C In 2048.
    • D In 2012.
    • E In 2014.
    • F Three decades from now.

What could jeopardise offshore platforms in Antarctica?

    • A The Antarctic treaties.
    • B Global navigation abilities.
    • C The Orthodox Church.
    • D Drifting icebergs.
    • E Research stations.
    • F An indoor badminton court.

原文用 like drifting icebergs that could jeopardise offshore platforms 直接建立风险关系。

  9. 第 9 段 定位词 pressure to renegotiate prohibitions expire

What may raise pressure to renegotiate Antarctica's treaties before the prohibitions expire?

    • A The dominance of the American GPS.
    • B The opening of a fifth station.
    • C Advances in technology.
    • D The Brazilian barge.
    • E Demand for resources in an energy-hungry world.
    • F Winter temperatures around minus 55 degrees Celsius.

原文明确指出该 demand could raise pressure to renegotiate,且可能让 commercial endeavours 在 prohibitions expire 前获准。

Chinese officials influence their moves

What concern do Chinese officials acknowledge influences their moves in Antarctica?

    • A Glaciology and meteorology.
    • B Scientific research.
    • C A fierce blizzard.
    • D Budget restraints.
    • E The dominance of the American GPS.
    • F Resource security.

原文在转折结构中明确称 concerns about resource security influence their moves。

How does the capacity of China's Great Wall Station compare with its winter population?

    • A It can sleep more than ten times the 13 people staying through winter.
    • B It sleeps exactly 13 people.
    • C It sleeps about 40 people in summer.
    • D It sleeps 150 people.
    • E It has more than 1,000 people in summer.
    • F It has the same capacity as the Russian base.

    该项完整保留了 capacity、more than 10 times 与 13 people 的比较关系。

  12. 第 12 段 定位词 limits the reach United States

What limits the reach of the United States in Antarctica?

    • A Its three year-round stations.
    • B Budget restraints and far fewer icebreakers than Russia.
    • C More than 1,000 people in summer.
    • D The elevation of 9,301 feet.
    • E China's fifth station.
    • F The Southern hemisphere's summer.

  13. 第 13 段 定位词 intercepting signals from satellites potentially enhance

What could satellite signal interception potentially enhance?

    • A The distinction between military and civilian activities.
    • B Antarctica's treaties.
    • C Global electronic intelligence operations.
    • D Fishing of krill.
    • E Freshwater reserves.
    • F The dominance of the American GPS.

  14. 第 14 段 定位词 largely destroyed by fire Brazil's research station

What happened when Brazil's research station was largely destroyed by fire?

    • A A diesel-laden barge sank near the base.
    • B A C-130 Hercules plane crash-landed.
    • C The station was rebuilt in 2015.
    • D It killed two members of the navy.
    • E Two Russian priests offered regular services.
    • F South Korea opened its second base.

关系从句 that killed two members of the navy 直接说明 fire 的人员后果。

Brazil's misfortune China

What opportunity did Brazil's misfortune create for China?

    • A China opened Brazil's research station in 1984.
    • B China supplied Brazil with a C-130 Hercules plane.
    • C China recovered the diesel-laden Brazilian barge.
    • D China paid Brazil $100 million for the damaged station.
    • E A Chinese company won a $100 million contract to rebuild the Brazilian station.
    • F China rebuilt the Brazilian station before the 2012 fire.

Brazil's stretch of misfortune created opportunities for China,具体体现为 a Chinese company winning the $100 million contract in 2015 to rebuild the Brazilian station。

South Korea test

What is South Korea using its second Antarctic research base to test?

    • A Interlocking shipping containers.
    • B Satellite systems.
    • C Ice-breaking ships.
    • D Krill in the Southern Ocean.
    • E A freshwater reserve.
    • F Robots developed by Korean researchers for use in extreme conditions.

Klaus Dodds geopolitical

How does Klaus Dodds describe the current geopolitical status of Antarctica?

    • A It is geopolitically contested.
    • B It is dominated by white men from European states.
    • C It is protected from commercial endeavours.
    • D It is a scientific preserve with no political interests.
    • E It is controlled by the American GPS.
    • F It is inaccessible because of drifting icebergs.

The reality is that Antarctica is geopolitically contested,属于原文结论复现。

这个 sense group 为主旨中的 'expanding presence through research bases' 提供了 ethnographic detail,通过 具体的 numbers(40 people、capacity for 150、13 staying through winter)和 vivid scenes(tea during blizzard、illustrated timeline)来 demonstrate expansion's scale,这种 ground-level reporting 让 abstract geopolitical competition 变得 tangible,给 readers 一个 embodied sense of what presence assertion actually looks like。

这个 contrastive paragraph 描述了 United States 虽然 maintains three year-round stations 和 more than 1,000 people during summer,但 researchers quietly complain about budget restraints 和 having far fewer icebreakers than Russia,这 limiting US reach in Antarctica,通过 traditional power 的 challenges 来 highlight power dynamics 的 shifting nature。

这个 paragraph 通过 traditional power's constraints 来 amplify 主旨中 'eroding the sway long held by countries like the United States' 的 theme, the juxtaposition of substantial presence(three stations、1000+ people)和 relative disadvantages(budget restraints、fewer icebreakers)reveals 即使 established players 也面临 competitive pressure,这个 counterpoint 使 narrative 更加 nuanced and complete。

这个 warning paragraph 指出 scholars warn Antarctica's political drift 可能 blur the distinction between military and civilian activities long before treaties renegotiation, especially in parts ideal for intercepting satellite signals or retasking satellite systems, potentially enhancing global electronic intelligence operations,这个 security dimension 为 Antarctic competition 增添了 military-strategic layer。

这个 paragraph 为主旨中的 'strategic interests' 提供了 most sensitive dimension:potential military applications,通过 scholars' warning 来 suggest 当前的 civilian research infrastructure 可能 serve dual purposes,这个 revelation 将 stakes 从 economic competition 提升到 security concerns, making treaty protections even more crucial and their potential erosion more alarming。

    这个 section 讲述了 Brazil's difficulties(station destroyed by fire、barge sank、plane stranded)以及如何 created opportunities for China(winning $100 million contract to rebuild Brazilian station),通过 one country's misfortune 和 another's gain 来 illustrate Antarctic competition 的 opportunistic nature 和 China's expanding influence。

这个 two-paragraph sequence 为主旨中的 'expanding presence' 提供了 indirect evidence:通过 Brazil's setbacks 和 China capitalizing on them 来 show expansion 不仅通过 direct building 也通过 strategic partnerships and contracts,这个 example 展示了 influence assertion 的 multiple pathways, reinforcing 主旨中 China's strategic positioning theme。

South Korea opening second base(testing robots),Belarus preparing first base with Russia's help,Colombia planning to join other South American nations, all these developments illustrating Antarctica's enduring allure 和 diverse motivations(technology testing、regional participation),reinforcing 文章的 central theme of expanding presence。

这个 paragraph 为主旨中的 'multiple nations rushing to expand' 提供了 additional breadth, showing expansion 不仅限于 major powers, even smaller nations(Belarus、Colombia)也在 pursuing Antarctic presence,这种 inclusive evidence 让 主旨的 'array of countries' 更加 convincing, demonstrating 这是一个 broad-based trend rather than isolated cases。

这个 concluding paragraph 引用 Klaus Dodds 的 expert assessment, declaring 'the old days of Antarctic being dominated by white men from European, Australasian and North American states are over',并强调 'Antarctica is geopolitically contested',这个 authoritative summary 为整篇 report 提供了 interpretive closure, confirming 文章 throughout 展示的 fundamental power shift。

这个 paragraph 为主旨提供了 definitive interpretive frame, expert's pronouncement 'old days are over' 和 'geopolitically contested' 直接 confirm 文章 documented 的 power dynamics shift,这个 authoritative conclusion 让 preceding evidence 的 significance 得到 explicit articulation,将 descriptive reporting 升华为 historical judgment,为 readers 提供了 clear takeaway message。

MAIN IDEA ·

第二段出现了明确的 time references:'More than a century has passed' 和 'for decades to come',以及关键的 future marker '2048'(treaty expiration)。

从第三段开始,文章密集出现 'treasure house of resources'、'fishing of krill'、'fresh water reserves'、'mineral, oil and gas wealth'、'36 billion barrels' 等 resource terms。

文章中反复出现 competitive language:'not to be outdone'、'challenge the dominance'、'assert greater influence'、'eroding the sway'、'geopolitically contested'。 同时 'US vs Russia GPS systems'、'old guard vs new players' 等 binary oppositions 强化了 competition theme

    主旨不是单一维度的,而是将 physical expansion(bases building)、resource interests(fishing, minerals, water)、geopolitical competition(challenging dominance)、和 temporal urgency(2048 deadline)整合在一起。

主旨信号词 rush P1 assert greater influence P2 treasure house of resources P3 comes up for review in 2048 P7 not to be outdone P1 geopolitically contested P17

Glaciers 会 carve out 特殊的 landforms,而 fjords 作为与之 parallel 的 feature,很可能是 ice-carved 的 narrow water passages 或 inlets。

在 Antarctic construction context 中,stilts 出现在描述 how a building is constructed 的 phrase 里。 Stilts 能够 support 134个 shipping containers,又让建筑 resemble a spaceship(elevated appearance),所以它们必定是 vertical supporting structures, like pillars or posts,用来 raise the building off the ground。

Antarctica 作为 scientific preserve 需要 protection,而 intrusions 是它要 shield against 的 threats。这些 intrusions 的 examples 包括 military activities 和 mining—都是会 disrupt the pristine environment 的 external forces。The prefix 'in-' reinforces 这是一种 unwanted entry or encroachment。因此,intrusions 必然是指 unauthorized or harmful penetrations into a protected area。

接着用 'an array of countries' 来 summarize 这个现象。从 plural verb 'are' 和前文的 multiple examples 可以判断,array 表示 a considerable number or variety。这不是随意的 'a few countries',而是一个 impressive or diverse group,强调竞争的 intensity 和 scope。

Russia 正在 building on something from the Soviet era to expand。 From the compound word structure(foot + hold),我们可以visualize 攀登时脚的 secure position。In the geopolitical context,it means Russia 从 Soviet times inherited a position of presence or influence in Antarctica,现在正 leveraging it to grow stronger。这不是从零开始,而是 consolidating and expanding from an existing advantage。

文章 established that many nations are competing for resources in Antarctica。当 describing mineral reserves that need treaty protection from mining,用了 coveted 这个词。The logic is clear: if something needs protection from exploitation,而且是 valuable resources like iron ore and coal, then coveted must mean these resources are intensely desired or envied by those who cannot freely access them。

When icebergs could jeopardise these platforms,考虑到物理现实—冰山撞击会 cause catastrophic damage—jeopardise 必然表示 'put at risk' or 'threaten with harm'。整个句子在强调 why resource extraction is so challenging,所以这个词带有 serious danger 的含义。

配合 'around'(大约),这不是说温度 exactly 是 -55°C,而是 consistently stays near that extremely cold level。如果 students 知道 hover 可以表示 'remain suspended in air',在这里它 metaphorically 表示温度 remains at or near a certain point without significant departure,就像直升机 hovering at a fixed altitude。

比如 第6段 中俄罗斯站长 Vladimir Cheberdak 的 "You can see that we're here to stay",这句话 directly conveys 俄罗斯在南极洲的 long-term commitment,让读者感受到各国在南极的 assertive presence。第11段 中中国基地负责人 Ning Xu 说 "We do weather monitoring here and other research",以及微生物学家 Yong Yu 的 "We now feel equipped to grow",这些 first-hand accounts 展现了中国快速扩张的 operations。第17段 的学者 Klaus Dodds 的评论 "The old days of the Antarctic being dominated by the interests and wishes of white men from European, Australasian and North American states are over" 则为文章的 geopolitical shift 提供了 authoritative perspective。

信号词 said stated noted explained acknowledged warned complain boast

在本文中,"here to stay" 这个 phrase 就比简单说 "we will continue our research" 更有 impact。

    P1 P4 P5 P7 P8 P10 P12

文章大量使用 specific numbers 和 statistics 来 substantiate 其 claims about Antarctic expansion。第1段 提到 Great Wall Station 有 "sleeping quarters for 150 people",具体的 capacity figure 展现了 China's scale of operation。第4段 和 第7段 提到南极洲拥有 "the biggest reserves of fresh water" 和 "at least 36 billion barrels of oil and natural gas",这些 quantitative data 解释了各国争相进入的 economic incentive。第10段 中 "13,422 feet above sea level" 和 "40 in the warmer summer months" 等数字让读者对 operational scale 有 concrete understanding。第12段 提到美国 "more than 1,000 people during the southern hemisphere's summer",通过 numerical comparison 暗示美国虽然人数多但 growth 不如其他国家 aggressive。

信号词 at least more than about estimate approximately

    仿写: 写作时要 embed numbers naturally into sentences,避免 data dumping。将 statistics 与 context 结合,比如不只说 "150 people",而是说 "sleeping quarters for 150 people",这样 number 就有了 tangible meaning。 或者:[事物] is estimated to have/reaches/spans + [数字] + [单位],[explaining what this means]。

    P1 P6 P10 P11

文章通过 detailed observations 和 factual descriptions 来 paint a picture of Antarctic activities。第1段 对各国基地的 physical descriptions("Orthodox church on a hill"、"built on stilts using 134 interlocking shipping containers, resembles a spaceship")让读者 visualize 这些 structures 的 unique characteristics。 Cheberdak "as he sipped tea under a portrait",这个 scene 既 humanizes 人物又 adds authenticity。第11段 将中国基地比作 "a snowed-in college campus on holiday break",这种 vivid imagery 帮助读者 relate to 一个 remote location。这些 neutral, observational descriptions 避免了 overtly judgmental language,让 facts speak for themselves。

信号词 overlooking complete with built on resembles with featuring

仿写: 写作时要 show, don't tell。与其说 "the base is impressive",不如 describe "an indoor badminton court and sleeping quarters for 150 people"。使用 sensory language 和 specific details 来 create mental images。适当运用 similes(like/as comparisons)让 abstract 或 unfamiliar things become relatable。

第2段 开篇就 establish temporal context:"More than a century has passed since explorers raced to plant their flags",将当前 situation 与 historic exploration 联系起来,同时提到 "protective treaties" 和它们的 expiration,这 sets up 整篇文章的 urgency。第7段 提到 "The treaty banning mining here...comes up for review in 2048",这个 specific deadline 解释了各国 current rush 的 strategic rationale。第12段 提到 Amundsen-Scott station "built in 1956",提供了 US presence 的 historical depth,形成 contrast with newer players。这些 background elements 让 readers understand 不仅是 what's happening,更重要的是 why now。

信号词 since has passed for decades built in comes up for review three decades from now before then

使用 time markers("more than a century", "for decades", "since")来 establish temporal relationships。提供 specific dates 或 deadlines 当它们 crucial to 理解 current urgency。将 historical context 与 current actions 进行 explicit connection,使用 "but" 或 "yet" 等 transition words 来 signal shifts。 [Time expression] has passed since [historical event/situation],and [current status under treaty/agreement]。But [contrasting current reality],with [explanation of new developments] + [future-looking element]。

第1段 中 "Not to be outdone" 明确建立了 competitive dynamic,将 Russia, China, India 并列比较。第11段 直接指出 "China's newly renovated Great Wall Station...makes the Russian and Chilean bases here seem outdated",通过 direct comparison 展现 China's advancement。第12段 用 "But" 引出美国的情况,虽然人数多("more than 1,000 people")但面临 "budget restraints and having far fewer icebreakers than Russia",这个 contrast 揭示了 declining dominance。第17段 的 quote 对比 "old days" 被 white men 主导与 now 的 geopolitically contested 状态,强调了 power shift。

信号词 but while however not to be outdone in contrast yet makes...seem than

使用 transition words 来 signal contrasts explicitly("but", "while", "in contrast", "however")。将 contrasting elements 放在 parallel structures 中来 amplify the effect("having X but lacking Y")。可以用 comparative adjectives(newer, outdated, faster-growing)或通过 specific details 来 imply comparison without stating it overtly。仿写模版:[A 的描述/成就] + contrasting connector (but/while/however) + [B 的描述/局限],[explaining the significance of this difference]。或:Not to be outdone, [主语] + [行动],[具体细节 showcasing competitive response]。

第2段 使用 "with an eye not just towards...but also for" 这个 structure 来 implicitly raise 关于 nations' true motivations 的 question。 然后 provides answers(drifting icebergs, remoteness, extreme temperatures)。第9段 的 "But advances in technology might make Antarctica a lot more accessible" 回应了前段提出的 obstacles,引导读者思考 future possibilities。这种 rhetorical structure creates 一种 implicit dialogue with readers, addressing potential doubts 或 questions before they arise。

信号词 with an eye towards but also beyond however but might could possibly warn

仿写: 写作时要 think about reader's likely questions 或 objections at each stage。使用 anticipatory phrases("beyond...", "but...", "however...") Structure information to create 自然的 question-answer flow:先 present 一个 assertion 或 situation,然后 address complications 或 provide explanations。用 forward-looking language("might", "could", "raises pressure to")来 guide readers toward considering future implications。仿写模版:[呈现一个 attractive 或 seemingly straightforward situation] + However/But [introduce complicating factors],like [specific obstacles/challenges]。Then [next paragraph] + But [present potential resolution or future change],[explaining how circumstances might evolve]。

    P1
Russia has built Antarctica's first Orthodox church on a hill overlooking its research base.

空间位置与掌控暗示类 overlooking overlook tower over in the shadow of command a view of overarching

    P2
this continent is supposed to be protected as a scientific preserve

理想与现实的落差类 supposed to be nominally in theory ostensibly purportedly

作者用 supposed to be 讽刺了现状:原本应作为 scientific preserve 的南极,实际上正面临 nations' intrusions。

    P10
Chinese officials say the expansion... prioritises scientific research, but they also acknowledge that concerns about 'resource security' influence their moves.

让步与坦白类 acknowledge concede confess grant yield the point

    P12
US researchers quietly complain about budget restraints

    P13
Antarctica's political drift could blur the distinction between military and civilian activities

边界模糊与渗透类 blur the distinction overlap thin line between intertwine gray area

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

Signal words 能 reveal author's underlying attitude。

  3. Structural balance 是 objective reporting 的重要 indicator。Author 不仅 cover 大国如 US、Russia、China 的 operations,也 include 较小参与者如 Brazil、Belarus、Colombia 的 situations,甚至 mention Brazil 的 setbacks。这种 inclusive approach 表明 author 不是在 promote 某一国家的 agenda,而是 paint 一个 comprehensive picture of Antarctic geopolitics。

Ending 往往 crystalize author's ultimate stance。 通过 ending on 'geopolitically contested' 这个 neutral descriptor, author 再次 reinforce 其 objective reporting position - 承认 competition exists 但不 judge 这种 competition 的 moral rightness。

这篇文章展现了 concerned objectivity - author 明显认为 Antarctic competition 是一个 significant issue 值得 public attention(通过 extensive detailed reporting 和 inclusion of expert warnings),但同时 maintain professional distance 通过 factual presentation 和 avoiding overtly biased language。这是典型的 quality journalism approach,既 inform readers about important issues 又 respect their ability to form own opinions。

  • rushing to assert P2

  • scholars warn P9

Attribution phrases 如 'scholars warn' 让 author 能够 present concerns 和 criticisms 而不 personally own them。这是 journalistic device 来 maintain objectivity - author 不是 directly warning readers,而是 reporting that experts are warning。

  • frustrated efforts P3

用 'frustrated' 来 describe Russia blocking ocean sanctuary efforts 带有 negative connotation - 它 implies 某件 good thing 被 prevented。

  • geopolitically contested P17

'Contested' 作为 concluding descriptor 是 neutral yet significant - 它 acknowledges conflict exists 但不 take sides on who's right。这个 word choice 为整篇文章的 tone 定调:recognizing tensions 和 competition 是 real and important,但 refraining from moral judgments about which country's claims or actions are legitimate。

同类词 contested disputed contentious controversial competitive

  • treasure house of resources P3

这个 phrase 在引号外使用,describing how newer players view Antarctica,带有 acquisitive connotation。'

同类词 treasure house treasure trove rich reserves abundant resources coveted reserves

  • blur the distinction P13

'Blur the distinction' between military and civilian activities 是一个 concerning development,这个 phrase 带有 negative implication - 清晰的 distinctions 被 blur 通常不是 positive thing, especially in context of international treaties。Author 通过 using 这个 verb 来 signal 这是一个 problematic trend 值得 attention。

同类词 blur erode undermine weaken compromise

新闻报道的 headline 通常summarize 一个正在发生的 event(比如 countries rush for upper hand),而议论文会提出 a debatable claim,说明文会介绍 what something is。Opening paragraph 直接描述 concrete actions(Russia built a church, China updated a station)是典型的 news reporting style,不是 presenting opinions 或 defining terms。

  2. 文中大量出现 temporal indicators:"more than a century has passed"、"for decades to come"、"opened its fourth station last year"、"in 2015"、"since the 1980s"。这些 time references 是新闻报道追踪 evolving situations 的标志,而议论文focus on logical relationships(因果、对比),说明文focus on structural relationships(分类、层次)。

    文章引用了 multiple actors 的 direct quotes 和 statements:Vladimir Cheberdak 说 "You can see that we're here to stay",Ning Xu 和 Yong Yu 的 comments,Klaus Dodds 的 analysis。新闻报道通过 attributing information to sources 来maintain objectivity,而议论文主要express author's viewpoint,说明文则是 author's authoritative explanation。

  4. 文章呈现了 multiple countries 的 competing moves:Russia vs. China vs. India vs. South Korea,还有 US researchers complaining about limitations,Brazil's failures creating opportunities for China。这种 multi-actor dynamic 是新闻报道 covering a complex situation 的特征,而议论文会 organize evidence to support one thesis,说明文会 present information in a coherent explanatory framework。
