Why should you consider taking a course in demography in college? You will be growing up in the generation where the baby boomers are going into retirement and dying. You will face problems in the aging of the population that have never been faced before. You will hear more and more about migration between countries, and between rural areas and cities. You need to understand as a citizen and as a taxpayer and as a voter what's really behind the arguments.

I want to tell you about the past, present and future of the human population, so let's start with a few problems. Right now, a billion people are chronically hungry. That means they wake up hungry, they are hungry all day and they go to sleep hungry. A billion people are living in slums, not the same billion people, but there is some overlap. Living in slums means they don't have infrastructure to take the garbage away. They don't have secure water supplies to drink. Nearly a billion people are illiterate. Try to imagine your life being illiterate. You can't read the labels on the bottles in the supermarket, if you can get to a supermarket. Two thirds of those people who are illiterate are women and about 200 to 250 million women don't have access to birth control they want so that they can control their own fertility. This is not only a problem in developing countries; about half of all pregnancies globally are unintended. So those are examples of population problems.

Demography gives you the tools to understand and to address these problems. It's not only the study of human population, but the populations of non-human species, including viruses, like influenza, the bacteria in your gut, plants that you eat, animals that you enjoy or that provide you with meat. Demography also includes the study of non-living objects like light bulbs and taxi cabs and buildings because these are also populations. It studies these populations in the past, present and future, using quantitative data and mathematical models as tools of analysis. I see demography as a central subject related to economics. It is the means to intervene more wisely and more effectively in the real world to improve the well being not only of yourself, important as that may be, but of people around you and of other species with whom we share the planet.

  1. P1

    Why Demography Matters

Studying demography prepares people to understand major population changes and make informed civic decisions.

  2. P2

The Scale of Global Population Problems

Global population problems include hunger, poor living conditions, illiteracy, and limited control over fertility.

  3. P3

Demography as a Tool for Action

Demography uses quantitative tools to analyze diverse populations and guide effective interventions that improve collective well-being.

Why does the author believe college students should understand demographic arguments?

    • A To avoid the health risks associated with old age.
    • B To predict exactly when the baby boomers will die.
    • C To make informed judgments as citizens, taxpayers, and voters.
    • D To persuade rural residents to move to cities.
    • E To reduce the amount of tax paid for retirement programs.
    • F To replace public debate with expert demographic decisions.

What does the author emphasize by mentioning unintended pregnancies worldwide?

    • A Most unintended pregnancies occur only in the poorest slums.
    • B Illiteracy is the primary cause of unintended pregnancies worldwide.
    • C Women account for half of all unintended pregnancies globally.
    • D Population-related reproductive problems are not confined to developing countries.
    • E Access to birth control has eliminated fertility problems in wealthy countries.
    • F Global population problems are limited to reproductive health.

Population-related reproductive problems 概括 birth control、fertility 与 unintended pregnancies, not confined to 精确保留否定限定。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 scope and method demography

Which statement best describes the scope and method of demography?

    • A It focuses exclusively on the past growth of human populations.
    • B It studies only viruses and bacteria that threaten public health.
    • C It relies mainly on personal observations rather than numerical evidence.
    • D It is identical to economics because both seek to improve well-being.
    • E It examines living and non-living populations across time through quantitative data and mathematical models.
    • F It uses demographic models solely to forecast urban migration.

    正确项完整整合了定义中的三层信息:living and non-living 概括 human、non-human species 与 objects;across time 对应 past、present、future;through quantitative data and mathematical models 对应明确的分析工具。

这个 body paragraph 通过 statistical evidence 将 abstract concept 具象化,用 one billion chronically hungry、one billion in slums、nearly one billion illiterate 这些 quantitative data 来 demonstrate population problems 的 severity 和 scale,特别强调 gender inequality 和 unintended pregnancies 这些 specific dimensions,从而让 argument 更具 empirical weight。

最后将 demography 定位为 central subject related to economics,强调它是 intervene wisely 和 improve well-being 的 means,从而回应 opening 的问题。

通过 expand the scope of demography 和 emphasize its analytical power,这个 paragraph 完成了从 problem awareness 到 actionable knowledge 的 transition,让整个 argument 形成完整的 problem-solution structure,并赋予 demography 以 transformative potential。

MAIN IDEA ·

议论文的 first paragraph 经常会用 rhetorical question 来 engage reader,比如这篇文章开头的 'Why should you consider...',这种 direct question 往往会引出 author's argument 的 core topic,也就是文章要 discuss 的 central issue。

第二段用了大量的 statistical data 和 parallel structure 来 list problems:'a billion people are chronically hungry'、'a billion people are living in slums'、'nearly a billion people are illiterate'。

第三段开头直接说 'Demography gives you the tools to understand and to address these problems',这是典型的 solution statement,紧接着 expand 了 demography 的 scope,最后用 'I see demography as...'

    这篇文章用了经典的 argumentation structure:para 1 用 question 和 future scenarios 吸引 attention,para 2 用 shocking statistics pile up problems,para 3 提出 demography 作为 solution 并 expand 其 significance。

我们来整合这些 clues:第二段用 'wake up hungry, hungry all day, go to sleep hungry' 这个 sequence 来阐释 chronically hungry,强调的是 continuity 和 persistence;从 etymology 角度,chron- 本身就表示 time,-ically 变成 adverb。两条线索都指向 'in a continuous or long-lasting manner'。

    让我们综合分析:首先,文章把 living in slums 和 chronically hungry 放在一起,两者都是 severe problems,说明 slum 是某种 adverse living condition;接着,作者详细解释了 slum 的 features:no infrastructure、no garbage removal、no secure water。

让我们整合 evidence:文章用 'can't read the labels' 这个 concrete example 来解释 being illiterate 的 implication;从 morphology 角度,il-(否定)+ literate(有读写能力的)= 没有读写能力。两条线索清晰指向 'unable to read and write'。

    P2

作者在第二段中通过列举 a billion people chronically hungry、a billion people living in slums、nearly a billion people illiterate、200-250 million women lacking birth control 等一系列 concrete examples 来说明 population problems 的严重性。

信号词 for example for instance such as including like take...as an example to illustrate specifically in particular

What are the concrete manifestations?" 比如论证 environmental pollution 严重时,可以列举 specific data:"每年有 X tons of plastic waste 进入海洋,Y species 面临 extinction,Z cities 的 air quality index 超标。"

    P2

在第二段中,作者使用了多组 parallel structures:"they wake up hungry, they are hungry all day, and they go to sleep hungry" 以及 "You can't read the labels...if you can get to a supermarket"。

可以采用 "三段式" pattern:选择 three related aspects 或 sequential stages,用 identical sentence structures 展开。例如论证 technology addiction:"We check our phones when we wake up, we check our phones during meals, we check our phones before sleep."

    P1 P2

第一段开头 "Why should you consider taking a course in demography in college?" 和第二段中的 "Try to imagine your life being illiterate" 都使用了 rhetorical questions 或 imperative prompts 来 engage readers。

Why How What if Have you ever Can you imagine Isn't it Don't you think Who can deny

Do you question what you read online, or do you accept it at face value?" 模版:【Why should/shouldn't + 主语 + 动作?】或【Have you ever considered + 观点?】或【What if + 假设场景?】

    P1 P3

第一段中 "You will be growing up in the generation where the baby boomers are going into retirement and dying. You will face problems..." 构成了 clear causal chain:因为 baby boomers retiring and dying(cause),所以 you will face unprecedented aging problems(effect)。第三段最后 "It is the means to intervene...to improve the well being" 也展示了 causal logic:通过学习 demography(means/cause)能够 improve well-being(effect)。

信号词 because since as therefore thus consequently as a result leads to results in causes due to so that

Because modern students average only 6 hours of sleep per night(cause), they experience decreased cognitive function and academic performance(effect)." 模版:【Since/Because + 原因描述, 结果陈述】或【原因陈述 + leads to/results in/causes + 结果描述】。关键是让 causal connection 是 logical and verifiable,必要时提供 supporting data 或 research findings 来 strengthen the link。

信号词 like as just as similar to comparable to analogous to in the same way likewise similarly including

可以使用 "A is like B in that..." structure。例如论证 learning programming:"Learning to code is like learning a musical instrument: both require consistent practice, understanding of fundamental patterns, and gradual mastery through repetition." 模版:【X is like Y because 共同特征1, 共同特征2】或【Just as A has properties P1, P2, B also has P1, P2】。关键是选择 apt and illuminating comparisons,让 analogy serve your argument 而非 distract from it,并且明确 comparison 的 scope 和 limitations。

同类词 picture yourself think about consider what it's like put yourself in envision

  • gives you the tools P3

'Gives you the tools' 是 empowerment language,把 demography 框架为 active enabler。'Tools' metaphor 暗示 practical utility 和 agency—readers can use this to effect change。这种 benefit-focused framing 配合 'you' 使 discipline feel personally valuable, strongly supporting author's advocacy that readers should study it。

同类词 provides the means offers solutions enables you to empowers you to equips you with

  • intervene more wisely and more effectively P3

Comparative structures('more wisely', 'more effectively')暗示 current state is inadequate, studying demography 能 achieve superior outcomes。这种 improvement framing 是 powerful persuasive device—谁不想 be wiser and more effective?作者用 positive comparatives 来 highlight benefits, reinforcing the value proposition 和 supporting urgent advocacy。

同类词 more wisely more effectively better equipped more successfully more meaningfully

  • improve the well being P3

'Improve' 和 'well being' 都是 strongly positive value terms。作者 ending with this altruistic outcome('not only yourself...but people around you and other species')是 climactic appeal to broader good。这种 expanding circle of benefit(self → others → planet)是 rhetorical move to show discipline's profound positive impact, directly supporting passionate advocacy。

第1段 开头就用 'Why should you consider...' 说明文会直接陈述 'Demography is...',新闻报道会用 'A new study shows...' 这样的 factual opening。

    第1段 中 'You need to understand...' 和 'You should consider...' 说明文会用 'X is defined as...' 或 'X works by...'

第3段 紧接着说 'Demography gives you the tools to understand and address these problems',形成完整的 problem-solution logic。说明文会平铺直叙 explain how things work,新闻报道会 report what happened,都不会刻意 construct 这种 persuasive logic chain。

第2段 中 'wake up hungry, they are hungry all day and they go to sleep hungry' 和 'Try to imagine your life being illiterate' 这种 emotional appeal 和 second-person address 是在让读者 empathize 并认同作者的 concern。说明文会保持 objective tone,用 'Studies show that...',新闻报道会 quote sources 而不是直接 address 读者的 feelings。

这篇文章的 thesis 是 'you should take a demography course',所有段落都在 support 这个 central claim:第1段 提出 relevance,第2段 展示 problems 的 urgency,第3段 说明 demography 的 value 和 application。整体 structure 是 persuasive,不是 expository (解释 what demography is) 也不是 reportorial (报道 demographic events)。
