Steel is valued for its reliability, but not when it gets cold. Most forms of steel abruptly become brittle(脆的) at temperatures below about -25℃ unless they are mixed with other metals. Now, though, a novel type of steel has been developed that resists fractures at much lower temperatures, while retaining its strength and toughness—without the need for expensive additives.

Steel's fragility at low temperatures first became a major concern during the Second World War. After German U-boats torpedoed(用鱼雷攻击) numerous British ships, a 2700-strong fleet of cheap-and-cheerful "Liberty ships" was introduced to replace the lost vessels, providing a lifeline for the besieged British. But the steel shells of hundreds of the ships cracked in the icy North Atlantic, and 12 broke in half and sank.

Brittleness remains a problem when building steel structures in cold conditions, such as oil rigs in the Arctic. So scientists have strived to find a solution by mixing it with expensive metals such as nickel.

Yuuji Kimura and colleagues in Japan tried a more physical approach. Rather than adding other metals, they developed a complex mechanical process involving repeated heating and very severe mechanical deformation, known as temp forming.

The resulting steel appears to achieve a combination of strength and toughness that is comparable to that of modern steels that are very rich in alloy content and, therefore, very expensive.

Kimura's team intends to use its tempformed steel to make ultra-high strength parts, such as bolts. They hope to reduce both the number of components needed in a construction job and their weight—by replacing solid supports with hollow tubes, for example. This could reduce the amount of steel needed to make everything from automobiles to buildings and bridges.

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 newly developed type of steel conventional steel

What distinguishes the newly developed type of steel from conventional steel?

    • A It becomes more flexible than other metals whenever temperatures fall.
    • B It avoids low-temperature brittleness by adding larger amounts of nickel.
    • C It remains strong and tough at far lower temperatures without costly alloy additives.
    • D It is designed mainly to replace steel used in ordinary indoor construction.
    • E It sacrifices toughness in exchange for exceptionally high strength.
    • F It is inexpensive because it can be produced without any mechanical processing.

Liberty ships low-temperature weakness

Why did the Liberty ships become a notable example of steel's low-temperature weakness?

    • A They were torpedoed by German U-boats before reaching British waters.
    • B Their cheap construction made them incapable of carrying heavy cargoes.
    • C They lacked the alloy metals needed to withstand enemy attacks.
    • D Their steel shells cracked in the icy North Atlantic, and some vessels broke apart and sank.
    • E All 2,700 vessels split in half after entering the North Atlantic.
    • F They were withdrawn because British forces no longer needed replacement vessels.

What limitation is associated with the conventional attempt to prevent steel brittleness in cold environments?

    • A It can be applied only to oil rigs located in the Arctic.
    • B It makes steel structures brittle at temperatures above freezing.
    • C It requires replacing steel structures with nonmetallic materials.
    • D It has eliminated fracture risks in all cold-weather construction projects.
    • E It depends on mixing steel with costly metals such as nickel.
    • F It lowers production costs by reducing the amount of nickel used.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:E

该项直接概括传统办法的限制:解决低温 brittleness 要依赖 expensive metals, nickel 是其中例子。depends on 准确突出这种成本依赖,而非误称技术无效。障碍在于原文用 scientists have strived to find a solution 表示努力,考生不能把“努力寻找”误读为“已经找到低成本方案”。

    评价词钉成本 时间最紧时,先以 cold environments 的场景同义词锁定 第3段,再只找评价词 expensive。此类 limitation 题不必逐句翻译:把正确项视为必须带有“旧办法的代价”这一负担信息;任何只谈地点、效果或未来收益的选项,都不是对 limitation 的回答。

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 Kimura and his colleagues improve steel performance

How did Kimura and his colleagues seek to improve steel performance?

    • A They increased the nickel content through repeated alloying.
    • B They cooled the steel rapidly after a single heating cycle.
    • C They designed hollow tubes to replace solid supports in cold regions.
    • D They combined steel with several low-cost nonmetal additives.
    • E They reduced mechanical deformation to preserve the original steel structure.
    • F They used temp forming, a physical process of repeated heating and severe mechanical deformation, instead of adding metals.

What does the comparison with modern alloy-rich steels indicate about the resulting steel?

    • A It can match the strength and toughness of expensive, high-alloy modern steels.
    • B It contains more alloy metals than the most expensive modern steels.
    • C It is more durable than every type of modern steel currently available.
    • D It achieves low cost by giving up much of its toughness.
    • E It has the same chemical composition as alloy-rich steels.
    • F It was developed primarily because modern steels are not strong enough.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:A

match 对应 comparable to,strength and toughness 精确保留比较维度,expensive, high-alloy 则正确修饰 modern steels 这一参照物。

Kimura's team construction

What potential benefit do Kimura's team expect from using tempformed steel in construction?

    • A It will eliminate the need for bolts in automobiles, buildings, and bridges.
    • B It could reduce the amount of steel required by allowing lighter structures with fewer components.
    • C It will make solid supports stronger by filling them with nickel alloys.
    • D It will allow construction projects to use more components of smaller size.
    • E It could replace all existing steel with hollow tubes in Arctic oil rigs.
    • F It has already reduced the weight of every major transport vehicle.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:B

该项准确整合了 hope to reduce the number of components and their weight 与 could reduce the amount of steel。

    我们把两个 comparative structures 连接起来:第1段 和 第5段 的 parallel expression 建立了「mixed with other metals」和「rich in alloy content」的 equivalence;第3段 和 第5段 的 contrast 则明确了「expensive metals like nickel」就是 alloy 的 composition。两条 reasoning paths 都指向同一个 conclusion:alloy 就是「合金」,即 metal mixture used to improve properties。

    P2

文章通过 Second World War 的 Liberty ships 这个 historical example 来说明 steel's brittleness at low temperatures 的严重后果。这个 concrete case 让读者直观感受到 the problem's severity:2700艘船中有数百艘在 icy North Atlantic 出现裂缝,12艘 broke in half and sank。这个 vivid example 不仅 demonstrates 了问题的 real-world impact,更为后文介绍的 novel steel development 提供了 strong motivation 和 practical context,让读者理解为什么 scientists have strived to find a solution。

信号词 for example for instance such as take... as an example a case in point to illustrate during in the case of consider

    仿写: 写作说明文时,你可以问自己:这个 technical problem 在 real world 造成过什么 memorable consequences?寻找 historical events 或 well-known cases 能让 abstract issue 立刻 come alive。比如讲 material failure,不要只说"材料失效很危险",而要像本文一样描述 specific incident:多少船、什么环境、什么后果。仿写模版:【问题陈述】→ 【引入具体案例的时间/背景】→ 【案例中的数据/细节】→ 【案例造成的严重后果】→ 【过渡到解决方案的必要性】。

  • 列数字

    P1 P2

文章中 multiple numerical data 发挥了 precision 和 credibility 的作用:-25℃ 标明了 traditional steel 的 brittleness threshold;2700-strong fleet 显示了 production scale;12 broke in half 量化了 disaster severity。这些 specific figures 让 technical description 更加 objective and convincing,特别是 temperature threshold(-25℃)directly contrasts with 后文提到的 much lower temperatures,让读者清晰理解 innovation 的 breakthrough significance。Numbers 赋予了 abstract claims 以 measurable reality。

信号词 about approximately nearly around over below above up to as many as at least % times fold

    仿写: 在说明文写作中,问自己:这个 phenomenon 或 achievement 的 scale 到底有多大?不要满足于 qualitative descriptions(很多、非常冷、大幅改进),而要寻找 exact measurements。比如不写"温度很低时钢材变脆",而写"temperatures below about -25℃"。组合使用 numbers 效果更佳:先给 baseline number(-25℃),再给 contrast number(much lower)或 consequence number(12 ships sank)。仿写模版:【现象/问题】+ 【具体数值阈值】→ 【规模数据】→ 【后果数量】→ 【改进后的对比数值】。

  • 作比较

    P1 P3 P4 P5

文章运用了 multiple layers of comparison 来 highlight the innovation:首先是 traditional steel vs. novel steel 在 low-temperature performance 上的对比;然后是 expensive alloy-rich steels vs. tempformed steel 在 cost-effectiveness 方面的比较。第5段 明确指出 resulting steel achieves comparable combination of strength and toughness 却 without expensive alloy content。这种 comparative structure 让读者清晰看到 new method 的 dual advantages:既保持了 performance,又避免了 high cost, directly addressing 文章开头提出的 core problem。

信号词 compared to in contrast unlike whereas while rather than instead of more...than less...than as...as similarly likewise on the other hand by comparison

    仿写: 写作时主动构建 comparison framework:先确定 what's being compared(old vs. new method, expensive vs. economical solution),然后在 same dimensions 上展开对比(performance, cost, complexity)。本文的高明之处在于 multi-dimensional comparison:performance 维度上 comparable,cost 维度上 superior。你可以用 comparative structures(more...than, without...unlike, while retaining)来 make contrasts explicit。仿写模版:【传统方法及其局限】→ 【新方法的核心不同】→ 【在关键维度A上的对比】→ 【在关键维度B上的对比】→ 【综合优势的总结】。

  • 下定义

    P4

第4段 中出现了精准的 technical definition:temp forming 被定义为"a complex mechanical process involving repeated heating and very severe mechanical deformation"。这个 definition 对理解 innovation 至关重要,因为它 clarifies the nature of the new approach:不是 chemical(adding metals)而是 physical/mechanical。这个 clear definition 帮助读者 grasp the fundamental difference between 传统 alloy method 和 Kimura's approach,为理解后续的 advantages(no expensive additives needed)奠定了 conceptual foundation。

信号词 is defined as refers to means is called known as termed which is that is namely in other words specifically

    仿写: 当引入 new concept 或 technical term 时,主动提供 definition。使用 definition structure:【Term】+ 【category/general class】+ 【specific characteristics】。本文中:temp forming(term)= a process(category)+ involving repeated heating and severe mechanical deformation(specific features)。注意 definition 的位置:通常在 first mention of the term 或在解释 how it differs from alternatives 时。避免 circular definitions(用词本身来定义)。仿写模版:【新术语】is/refers to 【所属大类】that/which 【关键特征1】and 【关键特征2】, known as 【术语名称】。

  • 分类别

    P3 P4

文章隐含着 clear categorical distinction between two approaches to solving steel brittleness:chemical approach(mixing with other metals like nickel)vs. physical approach(mechanical process)。第4段 用"Rather than adding other metals"明确标示了这个 categorization。这个 classification 不仅 organizes information logically,更 highlights the novelty of Kimura's method:它属于被 less explored 的 physical category。通过这种 categorical thinking,读者能够 understand why this solution is innovative—它代表了 different problem-solving paradigm。

信号词 can be divided into falls into...categories there are...types of one type...another type rather than instead of alternatively classified as grouped into ranging from...to

仿写: 建立 classification 时,首先确定 classification principle(按 what standard 分类?本文按 approach type:chemical vs. physical)。然后 clearly signal the categories 你要讨论。使用 contrastive transitions(rather than, instead of, a different approach)来 mark category shifts。确保 categories 是 mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive。本文虽然只 explicitly discusses two approaches,但 structure 暗示这是 comprehensive classification of solutions。仿写模版:【总述问题有多种解决途径】→ 【第一类方法:特征+实例】→ 【转折词 marking shift】→ 【第二类方法:特征+实例】→ 【评价各类方法的优劣】。

第6段 对 innovation 的 practical applications 进行了 detailed interpretation:不只说"可以用于制造部件",而是具体 elaborates how it will be used(make ultra-high strength parts, such as bolts),what benefits it brings(reduce number of components, reduce weight),and by what means(replacing solid supports with hollow tubes)。这种 elaborative explanation 让 abstract innovation 获得了 concrete significance,使读者理解 tempformed steel 的 real-world value。Interpretation 把 technical achievement 转化为 tangible impacts(from automobiles to buildings and bridges)。

信号词 in other words that is to say which means this means that for example for instance specifically to put it differently essentially in practice this implies

    仿写: 当提出 technical solution 或 innovation 后,不要止步于 what it is,而要 interpret what it means in practice。问自己:这个 innovation 如何 translate into real applications?它解决什么 practical problems?本文从三个层次 interpret:direct use(make bolts)→ broader strategy(reduce components and weight)→ ultimate impact(less steel for everything)。使用 purpose expressions(intends to, hope to)和 example markers(such as, for example)来 structure your interpretation。仿写模版:【创新/方法陈述】→ 【具体应用意图(intends to, aims to)】→ 【实现方式(by doing X, through Y)】→ 【更广泛的影响(This could...)】。

IMPLIED MEANING · 言外之意

7 处话里有话

作者没有明说、但靠信号词传递出来的态度与暗示——每处给出原文片段、信号词类型与解读。

  • 传统钢材低温脆性的局限性

    P1
Steel is valued for its reliability, but not when it gets cold.

转折类 but not when but however yet nevertheless nonetheless although

表面上在 praise steel 的 reliability,但 'but not when it gets cold' 这个 sharp turn 其实在 signal 一个 critical flaw。这个 implication 是:钢材的 reliability 不是 universal 的,在 low temperature conditions 下会 fail。这为整篇 article 的 central theme 奠定了 foundation—需要 develop 新的 steel type 来 overcome 这个 temperature-related brittleness。这个 subtle hint 也 foreshadow 了后文会 introduce 的 novel solution。

  • 添加其他金属的代价暗示

    P1
unless they are mixed with other metals

条件限制类 unless only if provided that on condition that as long as except without

这个 unless clause 表面在 state 一个 technical fact,但实际 imply mixing with other metals 是有 cost 或者 inconvenience 的。结合后面 'without the need for expensive additives' 这个 phrase,我们能 detect 作者在 build up contrast:传统 solution 依赖 costly alloying,而 novel approach 能 bypass 这个 expense。这个 implied criticism 对 article thesis 非常 crucial,因为它 establish 了新 steel 的 economic advantage,不仅是 technical breakthrough,更是 cost-effective innovation。

  • 自由轮船设计的讽刺性缺陷

    P2
    a 2700-strong fleet of cheap-and-cheerful "Liberty ships"

委婉表达类 cheap-and-cheerful so-called supposedly merely simply just rather

'Cheap-and-cheerful' 这个 phrase 表面 describe ships 的 quick production,但 imply 它们 sacrificed quality for quantity。紧接着的 'cracked' 和 'sank' 就 validate 这个 implication。对 article thesis 来说,这个 historical example 不仅是 vivid illustration 的 steel brittleness problem,更 underscore 忽视 material limitation 的 catastrophic consequence,从而 amplify 新 steel development 的 practical urgency 和 historical significance。

  • 传统合金方案的经济负担

    P3
by mixing it with expensive metals such as nickel

负面修饰语类 expensive costly difficult complex challenging problematic inefficient

'Expensive' 这个 word 不是 casual mention,而是 strategic emphasis。它 imply 传统 nickel-alloying approach 虽然 technically effective,但 economically prohibitive,限制了 wide application。这为 Kimura's team 的 'more physical approach' 铺垫了 competitive edge—不依赖 costly additives。对 main thesis 而言,这个 economic implication 扩展了 innovation 的 value proposition,从 purely technical advancement 升级到 practical, scalable solution。

  • 机械方法相对于化学方法的创新性

    P4
Rather than adding other metals, they developed a complex mechanical process

对比类 Rather than rather than instead of as opposed to in place of unlike contrary to

'Rather than' 这个 phrase imply Kimura's team 没有 follow 传统的 metallurgical route (alloying),而是 pioneer 一个 entirely different pathway (mechanical deformation)。这个 methodological shift 对 article thesis 非常 significant,因为它 demonstrate innovation 不限于 incremental improvement,而是 fundamental rethinking。这也 echo 第1段 的 'without expensive additives',形成 logical consistency—避免 costly chemicals 需要 completely different approach。

  • 新钢材性能的对等性暗示成本优势

    P5
appears to achieve a combination of strength and toughness that is comparable to that of modern steels that are very rich in alloy content and, therefore, very expensive

模糊限制语类 appears to achieve...comparable to appears to seems to comparable to similar to equivalent to on par with

'Comparable' 看似 modest statement,但结合 'very expensive' 这个 contrast, implication 是 dramatic:新 steel 用 mechanical process 达到了 costly alloying 才能 achieve 的 performance level。这对 article thesis 是 decisive validation—technical feasibility 和 economic advantage 同时 established。这个 subtle phrasing 也 reflect scientific caution,避免 overstate,但 informed reader 能 grasp 真正的 breakthrough significance。

  • 应用前景的广泛性暗示

    P6
reduce the amount of steel needed to make everything from automobiles to buildings and bridges

范围扩展类 everything from...to ranging from...to from...to across throughout in various fields in multiple domains

'Everything from automobiles to buildings and bridges' 这个 phrase imply 新 steel 的 application 是 virtually unlimited,能 penetrate 各个 industry sector。对 article thesis 而言,这是 powerful conclusion,将 laboratory innovation 的 narrative 升级到 industrial revolution 的 level。这个 broad applicability 也 justify 了 research 的 investment 和 attention,暗示 societal-level benefit 而不只是 technical curiosity。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

    说明文结尾往往是态度的浓缩表达,如果用hope, could, would搭配positive benefit(比如reduce weight, reduce cost),而不是unfortunately, however这类质疑词,就能确认整体倾向是positive而非neutral。

  4. 全篇没有出现质疑或否定该技术的词汇,反而层层强调优势(no expensive additives, comparable性能, 广阔应用前景),因此可判定作者态度是积极支持,而非单纯客观中立。

文中的态度信号词

  • novel P1

    novel直接修饰new type of steel,把这项技术定性为具有新颖性的成果,作者用这种褒义形容词,暗示的是一种admiration而不是单纯罗列fact。

同类词 intend to aim to could reduce expect to

GENRE · 速判体裁

30 秒判定这是一篇说明文

体裁决定读法与出题套路。以下判断步骤与标志词全部以本文为例,可直接迁移到其他英语六级 真题文章。

如何快速判断这是一篇说明文?

  1. 开头陈述事实特性 P1

议论文的开头会 present a debatable position 或 controversial statement,比如 'Steel should be banned in cold regions';新闻报道会用 headline-style lead 强调 recent event 或 breaking news,比如 'Scientists announced yesterday'。但这篇文章的开头是 factual description of a characteristic,这是 expository writing 的核心 marker。

  2. 包含历史背景说明 P2

议论文会快速 move to arguments 和 counterarguments;新闻报道会 focus on current events 和 immediate consequences。但说明文需要 establish context 让读者 understand the significance of the topic,所以会 include background paragraphs。

  3. 详述技术过程方法 P4

议论文会 argue which method is better 但不会 detail the process itself;新闻报道会 announce the discovery 但不会 elaborate on technical procedures。只有说明文会 take time to explain processes 和 mechanisms in detail,因为 its goal is to inform 而非 persuade 或 report。

  4. 客观陈述研究结果 P5

议论文会 use evaluative language 来 persuade readers,比如 'This breakthrough proves we must invest more';新闻报道会 include quotes 和 reactions from stakeholders。但说明文 maintains objectivity, simply presenting what is known 或 what was achieved。

  5. 展望未来应用方向 P6

议论文结尾会 restate the thesis 和 call for action;新闻报道结尾会 provide follow-up information 或 next steps in the story。说明文结尾则 naturally extends the topic, describing potential uses 或 future directions,保持 informative 而非 persuasive 或 time-sensitive 的 tone。

  6. 信息层层递进结构 P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6

    对比三种文体的 structural patterns:议论文是 claim → evidence → counterargument → conclusion;新闻报道是 lead → details → background → significance;说明文是 introduction → background → explanation → results → applications。这篇文章完全符合 expository structure,每个 paragraph serves to deepen understanding 而非 build argument 或 report news。
