While some scientists explore the surface of Antarctica, others are learning more about a giant body of water four kilometers beneath the ice pack. Scientists first discovered Lake Vostok in the 1970s by using radio waves that penetrate the ice. Since then, they have used sound waves and even satellites to map this massive body of water.

How does the water in Lake Vostok remain liquid beneath an ice sheet? "The thick glacier above acts like an insulating blanket and keeps the water from freezing," says Martin Siegert, a glaciologist from the University of Wales. In addition, geothermal heat from deep within the earth may warm the hidden lake. The scientists suspect that micro-organisms may be living in Lake Vostok, closed off from the outside world for more than 2 million years.

Anything found there will be totally alien to what's on the surface of the earth, says Siegert. Scientists are trying to find a way to drill into the ice and draw water samples without causing contamination. Again, robots might be the solution. If all goes as planned, a drill-shaped robot will melt through the surface ice. When it reaches the lake, it will release another robot that can swim in the lake, take pictures, and look for signs of life.

The scientists hope their discoveries will shed light on life in outer space, which might exist in similar dark and airless conditions. Recently, close-up pictures of Jupiter's moon, Europa, show signs of water beneath its icy surface. Once tested in Antarctica, robots could be sent to Europa to search for life there too.

A Liquid Lake and Possible Life

Lake Vostok may remain liquid because of natural heat and may harbor ancient life.

  3. P3

    Robotic Exploration Without Contamination

Robots may enable contamination-free exploration of Lake Vostok and the search for alien life.

SELF CHECK ·

What enabled scientists to first discover Lake Vostok?

    • A Sound waves used to map the lake.
    • B Satellite images of the Antarctic surface.
    • C Radio waves that penetrate the ice.
    • D Robots sent beneath the ice pack.
    • E Geothermal heat from deep within the earth.
    • F Close-up pictures of Europa.

正确项精确对应 first discovered 后面的 by using 结构,保留了 radio waves 与 penetrate the ice 两个关键限定,完整回答“借助什么发现”。

Siegert prevents from freezing

According to Siegert, what primarily prevents the water in Lake Vostok from freezing?

    • A Geothermal heat that certainly warms the lake.
    • B Heat produced by micro-organisms in the water.
    • C Radio waves trapped inside the ice sheet.
    • D The insulating effect of the thick glacier above the lake.
    • E The lake's isolation from the outside world.
    • F A swimming robot that circulates warm water.

该项概括了 Siegert 的明确说明:thick glacier acts like an insulating blanket,并直接产生 keeps the water from freezing 的结果。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 drill-shaped robot release another robot

What is the drill-shaped robot expected to do when it reaches Lake Vostok?

    • A Bring water samples directly back to the surface.
    • B Use radio waves to map the entire lake.
    • C Generate geothermal heat to keep the water liquid.
    • D Carry Antarctic micro-organisms to the outside world.
    • E Release another robot that can swim, take pictures, and look for signs of life.
    • F Travel immediately to Europa to search for life.

原文明确说明第一个 drill-shaped robot 到达湖泊后 will release another robot,随后由第二个 robot 执行 swim、take pictures 和 look for signs of life。

Antarctica Europa

Why do scientists believe that their work in Antarctica may be relevant to the search for life on Europa?

    • A Because life has already been confirmed beneath Europa's icy surface.
    • B Because Europa has a glacier that insulates its water in exactly the same way.
    • C Because satellites have already mapped all of Europa's hidden water.
    • D Because Antarctic micro-organisms can be transported to Europa for study.
    • E Because drilling in Antarctica will permanently remove contamination risks on Europa.
    • F Because both locations may have similarly dark, airless, and icy environments that can be explored with tested robots.

该项整合了段落的两层依据:life might exist in similar dark and airless conditions,以及 Once tested in Antarctica, robots could be sent to Europa。

其次,从 causal logic 看,要让 water remain liquid,必须 prevent heat from escaping。

    两条线索高度一致:context clue 明确指出 heat 来自 deep within the earth,而 morphological analysis 显示 geo-(earth) + thermal(heat) 的组合。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P2
The thick glacier above acts like an insulating blanket and keeps the water from freezing. In addition, geothermal heat from deep within the earth may warm the hidden lake.

In addition Moreover Furthermore Besides Additionally What's more Also

这个 implication 揭示 Lake Vostok 保持 liquid state 并非 simple process,而是 insulation 和 geothermal heat 两个 mechanisms 的 combined effect。这对 main thesis 的 significance 在于强调这个 subglacial environment 的 uniqueness 和 complexity,为后文 potential life forms 的存在提供 plausible physical conditions。如果 only one factor 就能 maintain liquid water,那这个 discovery 的 scientific value 会 diminish,但 multiple interacting factors 表明这是个 extraordinary ecosystem,值得 in-depth exploration。

    P3
Anything found there will be totally alien to what's on the surface of the earth

强化修饰类 totally alien totally completely absolutely entirely utterly wholly

Siegert 用 totally alien 这个 extreme expression 传递的 subtext 是:Lake Vostok 的 isolated environment 可能孕育了 fundamentally different life forms,它们的 evolutionary trajectory 和地表生物 completely diverged。这个 implication 对 article's main point 至关重要,因为它 justifies why this research 值得 significant resources 和 technological innovation。如果 organisms 只是 slightly different, scientific value 有限,但 totally alien 暗示这可能 redefine our understanding of life itself,这也为 final paragraph 关于 extraterrestrial life 的 connection 埋下伏笔。

    P3
Scientists are trying to find a way to drill into the ice and draw water samples without causing contamination.

否定限制语 without causing contamination without causing without affecting avoid prevent eliminate minimize the risk of

这个 without causing contamination 的 qualifier 隐含的 message 是:contamination risk 非常 real 且 serious, scientists 目前 still searching for solutions(用的是 trying to find,而非 have found)。 它 explains why robots are necessary(传统 drilling 必然 contaminate),也 foreshadows 这个 pristine environment 的 scientific preciousness。如果 contamination 不是 major concern, wouldn't need such elaborate robotic solutions,这个 constraint 实际上 reinforces Lake Vostok's status 作为 unique research opportunity。

    P4
The scientists hope their discoveries will shed light on life in outer space, which might exist in similar dark and airless conditions.

情态词推测类 might exist might may could possibly perhaps potentially

用 might exist 而非 exists 这个 modal choice 透露的 subtext 是:Europa 上的 life 目前 purely hypothetical,Lake Vostok research 的 astrobiological relevance 是 forward-looking projection 而非 confirmed application。这对 article's thesis 的 role 是既 expand the significance of Antarctic research(connects to space exploration),又 maintain scientific rigor(不 overstate current evidence)。这个 careful hedging 实际上 strengthens credibility, showing 科学家 aren't making unfounded claims,而是 establish a logical pathway:if life exists in Vostok → similar environments elsewhere might harbor life → methods developed here could test that hypothesis。It's a measured escalation from terrestrial to extraterrestrial possibilities。

    P4
Once tested in Antarctica, robots could be sent to Europa to search for life there too.

Once tested After validation When proven Upon completion Following verification As soon as confirmed Once demonstrated

Once tested 这个 conditional marker 暗含的 meaning 是:robotic technology 目前 not yet proven in Lake Vostok's extreme conditions,Antarctica 是 testing ground 而非 final destination。配合 could be sent(而非 will be sent)的 modal,双重 hedge 表明 Europa mission 是 multi-stage prospect with uncertainties。这对 overall argument 的 function 是 provide aspirational context 说明 Antarctic research 的 broader significance,同时 acknowledge realistic constraints。它 positions Lake Vostok research as proof-of-concept phase for more ambitious extraterrestrial applications,这种 phased approach 既 justifies current investment 又 maintains scientific caution about timeline 和 technical feasibility。
