The Glasgow subway first opened in 1896 as a cable-hauled system. It is generally recognised as the world's third underground railway, after London and Budapest. In its long history, it has never been expanded, remaining as a single loop line with a mere 15 stations. At its peak, it served the shipyard workers on the south side of the city. In the 1960s, there was a decline in the shipbuilding industry and the popularity of private transport grew. As a result, the subway saw a rapid decline in ridership.

It ran with little further change until 1977 when its new operators closed it for major modernisation investment. Carriages were replaced, ventilation was improved, and the main depot was also renovated and fitted with connecting tracks to replace the outdated crane transfer mechanism. The subway in its present form reopened for operation in April 1980. Since its relaunch, the subway has seen a revival in its fortunes. It serves as a viable alternative to other forms of transport and has gone a long way to alleviate traffic jams in the city centre. In 1996, the system reached an important milestone—100 years. To commemorate this special event, the colour scheme of the train carriages was updated.

Recently, high-tech systems such as smart card ticketing machines and smart gates are used across all subway stations. The smart card provides more convenient travel, and passengers simply top up their cards and tap them to get in and out the subway. Since its launch, the technology has been adopted by more than 100,000 subway customers.

  1. P1

    Origins and Early Decline

The Glasgow subway, established in 1896 as the world's third underground railway, remained unexpanded with 15 stations and experienced significant ridership decline in the 1960s due to shipbuilding industry downturn and rising private transport popularity.

    这个paragraph在entire article中functions as essential background和problem setup。它establishes了subway的historical credentials(world's third),这个prestige makes后续的decline更dramatic,也让modernization更justified。通过presenting从peak到decline的trajectory,它creates了a problem that demands solution,directly setting up段落2的modernization narrative。Without这个context,readers无法fully appreciate后续revival的significance。这个paragraph essentially answers 'why modernization was necessary'这个critical question。

  2. P2

    Modernization and Revival

Following the 1977 closure for comprehensive modernization including carriage replacement and depot renovation, the Glasgow subway reopened in 1980 and successfully revived as an effective transport alternative that reduces city traffic congestion.

这个paragraph是entire article的central piece,它directly addresses文章主旨中的'revitalized through modernization'。 通过detailed描述technical improvements,它provides credibility和substance to revival claim。Alleviate traffic jams这个benefit directly connects to urban planning context, showing subway不只是recovered而是became valuable asset。100-year celebration adds emotional resonance, transforms这个story from mere technical update到meaningful institutional milestone。这个paragraph essentially proves了strategic investment能reverse decline trajectory。

  3. P3

    Digital Innovation and Continued Growth

The Glasgow subway has recently implemented smart card technology across all stations, providing more convenient tap-to-ride access that has been adopted by over 100,000 passengers.

这个paragraph在article structure中serves as continuation和validation of success narrative。它demonstrates文章主旨中'continues upgrading'这个element, showing 第2段的revival不是endpoint而是foundation for ongoing improvement。通过focusing on smart technology,它positions Glasgow subway as modern和forward-thinking system, not just historically significant。100,000+ adoption figure provides concrete evidence supporting文章主旨中的positive trajectory claim。这个paragraph也implicitly addresses sustainability question:system不仅survived和revived,而且continues to attract users through innovation。它给readers留下lasting impression of dynamic, evolving system rather than static historical artifact。

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 rapid decline in ridership in the 1960s

What directly led to the rapid decline in subway ridership in the 1960s?

    • A The subway's failure to expand beyond its original loop line.
    • B The replacement of the subway's carriages.
    • C The contraction of shipbuilding and the growing use of private transport.
    • D The introduction of smart card ticketing machines.
    • E The renovation of the main depot.
    • F The updating of the train carriages' colour scheme.

正确项完整复现了结果前的两个并列原因:decline in the shipbuilding industry 与 popularity of private transport grew。 障碍在于题干问 directly led to,考生必须确认这两个变化共同位于 As a result 之前,而不能只选看似相关的 shipyard workers 或 traffic jams。

Which modernization measure improved the connection between the main depot and the subway system?

    • A Replacing the old carriages with newer ones.
    • B Improving ventilation throughout the subway.
    • C Reopening the system for operation in April 1980.
    • D Renovating the depot and fitting it with connecting tracks to replace the crane transfer mechanism.
    • E Updating the colour scheme of the train carriages.
    • F Installing smart gates at all subway stations.

原文将 main depot was renovated 与 fitted with connecting tracks 连在同一措施中,并明确说明其目的为 replace the outdated crane transfer mechanism。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 smart card more convenient

How does the smart card make subway travel more convenient for passengers?

    • A Passengers can use the card only after purchasing a separate paper ticket.
    • B The card automatically selects the fastest subway route for each passenger.
    • C The card allows passengers to use private transport without extra payment.
    • D More than 100,000 customers receive free cards from the subway.
    • E Passengers top up the card and tap it when entering and leaving the subway.
    • F Smart gates replace all train carriages on the subway line.

正确项准确概括了操作链:top up their cards,然后 tap them to get in and out the subway。 障碍在于原文同段还给出 across all subway stations 和 more than 100,000 subway customers;这些都是真的,却分别属于覆盖范围和采用规模,不能回答 How。

这个 opening segment 介绍了 Glasgow subway 的 historical background,从 1896 年作为 cable-hauled system 开通,成为 world's third underground railway,但 layout 从未 expanded,一直是 single loop line with 15 stations。

这个 central segment 描述 1977 年 operators 进行 major modernisation investment,包括 carriages replacement、ventilation improvement、depot renovation with connecting tracks 替代 outdated crane mechanism。1980 年 reopened 后 saw revival,成为 viable alternative transport,有效 alleviate city centre traffic jams。1996 年 reached 100-year milestone,更新了 colour scheme 来 commemorate。

通过 specific measures 和 concrete outcomes, demonstrate 如何从 declined state transform 到 successful operation,是 typical problem-solution pattern 在 explanatory writing 中的 application,为主旨提供 substantive evidence。

这个 concluding segment 聚焦 recent developments,介绍 high-tech systems 如 smart card ticketing machines 和 smart gates 在 all stations 的 deployment。Smart card 提供 more convenient travel, passengers 通过 top up 和 tap 操作 access subway。Technology 的 adoption 已经达到 over 100,000 customers。

这个 final section 在 expository framework 中 serve as extension, demonstrate 主旨中 continues upgrading 的 concrete manifestation。通过 current technological adoption, reinforce revitalization 的 ongoing nature,是 typical expository conclusion pattern—从 historical recovery extend 到 contemporary advancement,给 readers complete picture of continuous improvement trajectory。

首先,从 causal logic 看,subway 作为 alternative transport,对 traffic jams 产生了某种 positive effect,而且 has gone a long way,说明效果明显。

比如说"很受欢迎"不如说"adopted by over 100,000 users";说"历史悠久"不如说"reached 100-year milestone"。模版:When describing [development/achievement/scale], use [specific number + unit] instead of [general adjective]. 例如:The system serves 15 stations → demonstrates limited scale; Over 100,000 customers adopted the technology → proves successful implementation.

    P1

文章在 第1段 通过 comparison 确立 Glasgow subway 的 historical position:"the world's third underground railway, after London and Budapest"。

信号词 after compared to in contrast to while whereas unlike similar to as opposed to relative to

使用 patterns like "X is the [ordinal number] [category], after [reference points]" 或 "compared to [X], [Y] is [comparative adjective]"。模版:[Subject] ranks as the [position] in [category], following [reference 1] and [reference 2]. 例如:This technology is the fourth most adopted payment system, after credit cards, mobile payments, and transit cards.

    P2 P3

这种 systematic categorization 让 complex modernization process 变得 clear and structured,帮助 readers 理解 revival 是 multi-faceted effort,不是 single intervention。

信号词 such as including ranging from...to types of categories include can be divided into aspects include

When describing complex systems or processes, identify natural groupings based on function, type, or chronology。使用 parallel structures 来 present each category:"X was [verb], Y was [verb], and Z was [verb]"。或用 transitional phrases like "in terms of [aspect]", "regarding [category]"。模版:The [project/system] involved improvements in [category 1]: [examples]; [category 2]: [examples]; and [category 3]: [examples]. 例如:The renovation covered infrastructure: tracks and stations were upgraded; equipment: new signaling systems were installed; and services: extended operating hours were introduced.

    P1

虽然文章没有 explicit formal definition,但在 第1段 对 Glasgow subway 进行了 functional definition:"a cable-hauled system" with "a single loop line with a mere 15 stations"。这些 descriptive details 本质上是 defining the nature and scope of the system,让 readers 对这个 specific subway system 有 clear understanding。这个 implicit definition 为后文讨论其 decline and revival 提供了 necessary context, support 了整体 narrative about this particular system's journey。

信号词 as is refers to means is defined as known as called which is that is

仿写: When introducing specialized subjects, provide defining characteristics early。可以用 appositive phrases ("X, a [defining description],") 或 relative clauses ("X, which is [definition]")。模版:[Subject], a/an [defining characteristic] [system/concept/entity] that [key feature], [main statement]. 例如:The maglev train, a magnetic levitation transportation system that operates without physical contact with tracks, represents cutting-edge transit technology.

    P2

文章在 第2段 对 modernisation investment 的 outcomes 进行 interpretation:"It serves as a viable alternative to other forms of transport and has gone a long way to alleviate traffic jams"。这不仅 state facts,而是 explain the significance and implications of the revival。这个 interpretive statement 将 technical improvements translate 成 practical benefits,帮助 readers 理解 why the modernization matters beyond just updating equipment, directly supports 主旨关于 subway effectively reducing congestion 的论点。

信号词 as a result consequently therefore this means in other words essentially serves as indicates that suggests that implies

After presenting facts or changes, follow up with interpretive statements using phrases like "this means", "as a result", "serves as", "has gone a long way to"。模版:[Factual statement]. [This/It] serves as [interpretation of role/function] and has [contributed to/enabled/led to] [broader implication]. 例如:The new algorithm processes data 50% faster. This serves as a significant efficiency boost and has enabled real-time analysis previously impossible.

    P2 P3

文章在 第2段 举了 specific examples of modernisation work:"Carriages were replaced, ventilation was improved, and the main depot was also renovated and fitted with connecting tracks to replace the outdated crane transfer mechanism"。这些 concrete examples 让 abstract concept "major modernisation investment" 变得 tangible and credible。通过 specific instances, readers 能 visualize the scope and nature of improvements, supporting 主旨关于 comprehensive revitalization 的论述。

信号词 for example for instance such as including like notably specifically in particular to illustrate

After making general statements, provide specific instances to substantiate。可以 list multiple examples with parallel structure 或 elaborate on one detailed example。模版:[General statement]. [Specific example 1], [specific example 2], and [specific example 3]. 或:[General statement]. For instance/For example, [detailed case]. 例如:The platform underwent comprehensive upgrades. Security systems were enhanced, user interfaces were redesigned, and payment processing was streamlined.

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
it has never been expanded, remaining as a single loop line with a mere 15 stations

绝对否定词 never no none nothing nowhere neither nor

    P1
At its peak, it served the shipyard workers on the south side of the city. In the 1960s, there was a decline in the shipbuilding industry

At its peak at its peak in its heyday at one time once formerly in its prime

表面上 at its peak 只是 mention 地铁曾经的 service function,但言外之意是 establish 一个 contrast benchmark。 对主旨的价值:它 explains the root cause of decline,为后面的 modernisation investment 和 revival narrative 提供 contextual motivation—system needed to adapt to changing economic landscape。

    P1
In the 1960s, there was a decline in the shipbuilding industry and the popularity of private transport grew. As a result, the subway saw a rapid decline in ridership

As a result as a result therefore consequently thus hence accordingly

对主旨的作用:它 justifies 后面提到的 major modernisation investment 的 necessity—only significant intervention could reverse such a severe decline caused by multiple converging factors,为 revival narrative 提供 dramatic contrast。

    P2
its new operators closed it for major modernisation investment

程度强调词 major significant substantial considerable extensive massive large-scale

表面上 major 只是 describe modernisation 的 scale,但言外之意是 emphasize 这是 critical turning point in the subway's history。选择 major 这个词,coupled with the fact that operators closed the entire system, implies 这是 all-in commitment to transformation,不是 incremental upgrade。对主旨的价值:它 marks the transition from decline to revival narrative, signals 文章从 problem phase 进入 solution phase,为后面描述的 successful revival 和 continued upgrades 建立 credibility—only major intervention could achieve such turnaround。

    P2
It serves as a viable alternative to other forms of transport and has gone a long way to alleviate traffic jams in the city centre

委婉表达 has gone a long way to to some extent to a certain degree relatively fairly somewhat largely

表面上 has gone a long way to alleviate 是 describe 地铁缓解交通拥堵的 contribution,但言外之意是 acknowledge 这个 improvement 虽然 significant 但 not absolute。选择这个 hedged expression 而不是说 solved or eliminated, implies 作者在 maintain objectivity—地铁 revival 虽然 successful 但不是 panacea for all traffic problems。对主旨的价值:它 adds credibility to the revival narrative by avoiding exaggeration, shows 这是 realistic assessment of modernisation impact, supports 主旨中 effectively reduces 这个 measured claim rather than overstated success story。

    P2
In 1996, the system reached an important milestone—100 years. To commemorate this special event, the colour scheme of the train carriages was updated

评价性标记 important milestone significant achievement landmark event notable accomplishment major breakthrough key moment crucial development

表面上 important milestone 只是 mark 百年纪念这个 temporal event,但言外之意是 celebrate the subway's successful survival and transformation。考虑前文提到的 severe decline,能够 reach 100 years 并且值得 special commemoration, implies 这个 system 不仅 survived crisis 而且 thrived after modernisation。Updating colour scheme to commemorate 进一步 suggests renewed confidence and vitality。对主旨的价值:它 reinforces the revival narrative by showing the system 不仅 functionally improved 还 achieved symbolic recognition, adds emotional resonance to the technical description of modernisation success。

    P3
Since its launch, the technology has been adopted by more than 100,000 subway customers

数量超越表达 more than over exceeding beyond above in excess of upwards of

表面上 more than 100,000 只是 report 智能卡的 adoption numbers,但言外之意是 emphasize 这个 high-tech upgrade 获得了 substantial user acceptance and success。选择 more than 这个 framing 而不是 exactly 或 approximately, implies 这个数字 exceeded expectations 或者 continues growing。Combined with since its launch 这个时间框架,suggests rapid and successful adoption。对主旨的价值:它 provides concrete evidence for the continues upgrading 部分,demonstrates the modernisation strategy 不仅在 infrastructure 层面成功,也在 user adoption 层面 validated, reinforces 整个 revival and continuous improvement narrative with quantifiable success metrics。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

说明文的 primary purpose 是 to inform,所以 absence of emotional language 往往 indicate 一个 neutral stance。

虽然 mentions 了 'decline in ridership',但作者 equally emphasizes 'major modernisation'、'revival in fortunes'、'viable alternative' 这些 recovery indicators。这种 balanced presentation of challenges and solutions 显示作者 acknowledge progress without being promotional。

Viable alternative' 不只是说 'it works',而是说 'it works well as an option','alleviate traffic jams' 直接 point out benefits。但这些都 embedded in factual contexts,不是 standalone praise。

作者没有 argue for a position 或 criticize alternatives,只是 present the subway's evolution。但 choice of focus(花更多 space 在 modernization 和 revival 上)和 inclusion of positive outcomes(减少交通拥堵、技术采用人数)reveal 一个 subtle positive lean within objectivity。

  • revival P2

'Revival' 这个词 carries an implicit positive judgment,因为它 suggests something valuable 被 brought back to life。在 neutral reporting 中也可以用 'increase' 或 'growth',但 'revival' 有一种 'returning to former glory' 的 connotation,显示作者 view this change favorably。

同类词 resurgence recovery renaissance rejuvenation revitalization

  • viable alternative P2

'Viable' 不只是说 'possible',而是说 'practically functional and worth considering'。这个 phrase 在说明文中 signal 作者认为 subway 不仅 exists 而且 performs a useful function,是 urban transport 的 credible choice。

同类词 practical option feasible solution workable choice valid substitute effective option

  • gone a long way to alleviate P2

Gone a long way' 是 idiomatic expression 表达 substantial progress,而 'alleviate' 本身就是 positive verb(减轻负面事物)。Combined together,它们 convey appreciation for the subway's beneficial effect。

同类词 gone a long way to significantly contributed to greatly helped substantially reduced effectively addressed

  • major modernisation investment P2

'Major' 这个 modifier 不是 necessary for factual accuracy(可以只说 'modernisation'),但 adding it emphasizes the scale and importance。

同类词 major investment significant upgrade substantial improvement extensive renovation comprehensive modernization

  • important milestone P2

Calling 100 years an 'important milestone' 而不是 just 'anniversary' 赋予 event special significance。'Milestone' metaphor 暗示 progress along a journey,而 'important' 明确标注其 value,这是 subtle endorsement within historical narration。

同类词 significant achievement notable landmark key turning point major accomplishment memorable event
