The Evolution of Intelligence

The idea that some groups of people may be more intelligent than others is one of those hypotheses that dare not speak its name. But Gregory Cochran is prepared to say it anyway. He is that rare bird, a scientist who works independently of any institution. He helped popularize the idea that some diseases not previously thought to have a bacterial cause were actually infections, which aroused much controversy when it was first suggested.

Even he, however, might tremble at the thought of what he is about to do. Together with another two scientists, he is publishing a paper which not only suggests that one group of humanity is more intelligent than the others, but explains the process that has brought this about. The group in question is a particular people originated from central Europe. The process is natural selection.

This group generally does well in IQ test, scoring 12-15 points above the mean value of 100, and has contributed disproportionately to the intellectual and cultural life of the West, as the careers of their elites, including several world-renowned scientists, affirm. They also suffer more often than most people from a number of nasty genetic diseases, such as breast cancer. These facts, however, have previously been thought unrelated. The former has been put down to social effects, such as a strong tradition of valuing education. The latter was seen as a (an) consequence of genetic isolation. Dr. Cochran suggests that the intelligence and diseases are intimately linked. His argument is that the unusual history of these people has subjected them to unique evolutionary pressures that have resulted in this paradoxical state of affairs.

  1. P1

    A Scientist Who Challenges Taboos

The passage introduces Cochran as an independent scientist willing to voice a taboo hypothesis about group intelligence.

  2. P2

    A Controversial Natural-Selection Claim

Cochran's paper argues that natural selection made a Central European group more intelligent than others.

  3. P3

    Linking Intelligence to Genetic Disease

Cochran argues that the group's high intelligence and genetic diseases are linked results of unique evolutionary pressures.

Gregory Cochran unusual scientist

What makes Gregory Cochran an unusual scientist?

    • A He is employed by a leading medical institution.
    • B He was the first scientist to prove that bacteria cause all diseases.
    • C He works independently of any institution.
    • D He avoids research topics that may arouse controversy.
    • E He specializes in treating bacterial infections.
    • F He rejects the possibility of inherited differences in intelligence.

    该项精准对应 works independently of any institution,是对 rare bird 的具体解释。

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 new paper in addition to difference in intelligence

What does the new paper attempt to explain in addition to a difference in intelligence?

    • A Why IQ tests should be replaced by cultural measures.
    • B How independent scientists gain institutional support.
    • C Why all human groups have identical intellectual abilities.
    • D The process responsible for the difference.
    • E The institutional history of scientific controversy.
    • F How a particular people migrated from central Europe.

该项对应 explains the process that has brought this about。this 指代前面的智力差异,responsible for the difference 对 brought this about 作了规范同义改写。

的 but 分支。

According to Dr. Cochran both high intelligence and a higher incidence of genetic diseases accounts for

According to Dr. Cochran, what accounts for both high intelligence and a higher incidence of genetic diseases?

    • A A strong social tradition of valuing education.
    • B Genetic isolation alone.
    • C The cultural achievements of several renowned scientists.
    • D The universal mean value of 100 in IQ tests.
    • E Unique evolutionary pressures in the group's history.
    • F The direct effects of breast cancer on intellectual development.

该项对应 unusual history...subjected them to unique evolutionary pressures that have resulted in this paradoxical state of affairs。它完整保留 history、unique、evolutionary pressures 三个限制,并以 both high intelligence and genetic diseases 概括 paradoxical state of affairs。

这个 paragraph 从 introduction 转向了 core argument,明确提出 Cochran 和 collaborators 正在 publishing a paper,其 central claim 是 one specific group(来自 central Europe 的某个 people)比 others 更 intelligent,而且这个 phenomenon 是由 natural selection 导致的。

这个 segment 作为 argumentative core 的 starting point, directly states the controversial claim 并 introduces the explanatory mechanism(natural selection),为后续的 detailed evidence 和 explanation 建立了 argumentative framework。它让 readers 清楚地知道 what position the author is defending。

它 presents 三类 facts:这个 group 的 high IQ scores(12-15 points above mean),their disproportionate contributions to intellectual life,以及 higher rates of genetic diseases。Then it challenges conventional explanations(social effects for intelligence, genetic isolation for diseases)并 proposes Cochran's alternative interpretation 即 intelligence and diseases are linked through unique evolutionary pressures。

这个 extensive segment 通过 providing concrete data(IQ scores, career achievements, disease rates)和 presenting causal logic(evolutionary pressures linking intelligence and diseases),fully develops the argument 并 refutes alternative explanations。

MAIN IDEA ·

这篇文章开头就用 'dare not speak its name' 和 'prepared to say it anyway' 来 signal 这是个 controversial argument。

第二段的 'suggests that one group... is more intelligent' 和 'explains the process' 直接 articulate 了 Cochran 的 central claim。

议论文的 supporting paragraph 会 explain 'how' 和 'why',这些 explanatory details 帮助我们 confirm 和 refine 对 main argument 的 understanding。

这篇文章的 thesis 包含:subject (a Central European group)、claim (intelligence and diseases are linked)、mechanism (natural selection)、以及 contrast (challenging social and isolation explanations)。

主旨信号词 suggests P2 however P3 linked P3 resulted in P3 prepared to say P1 not only... but P2

从 syntactic function 看,affirm 在 as clause 中提供 supporting evidence 的作用。

从 collocation and phonetics 看,nasty 修饰 diseases 时表达 unpleasantness and severity。

这个 concrete evidence 让抽象的 "contribute disproportionately to intellectual and cultural life" 变得可信且有说服力。

信号词 including such as for example for instance like as illustrated by as shown by as demonstrated by affirm exemplify

比如论证 "中国在科技领域取得显著进步",可以写 "as the achievements of their scientists, including Nobel laureates like Tu Youyou, demonstrate"。 This [group/phenomenon] has [characteristic], as [specific examples] affirm/demonstrate/illustrate."

The latter..." 结构对比了 two conventional explanations:intelligence 归因于 social effects,而 diseases 归因于 genetic isolation。

The former The latter while whereas in contrast on the other hand conversely however but unlike previously

仿写: 当你想推翻 old explanations 或引入 new theory 时,先用 parallel structure 呈现对立的 viewpoints。 Traditional views attribute X to social factors, while explaining Y as genetic accident." 然后用 "however" 或 "Dr./The author suggests" 引出 alternative explanation。 The former has been put down to [explanation A]. The latter was seen as [explanation B]. [Author] suggests that [A and B] are [relationship]."

    P3

Dr. Cochran 的 central argument 是建立 causal chain:unusual history → unique evolutionary pressures → paradoxical state (high intelligence + genetic diseases)。 通过 "has subjected them to" 和 "have resulted in" 这些 causal connectors,作者构建了从 historical circumstances 到 biological outcomes 的 logical pathway。

信号词 result in resulted in lead to cause bring about subject to subjected because due to owing to consequently therefore thus hence as a result

使用 explicit causal language 如 "subject to", "result in", "bring about", "lead to"。 The rapid urbanization has subjected rural communities to economic pressures that have resulted in demographic shifts." [Factor/History] has subjected [subject] to [conditions/pressures] that have resulted in [outcome/state]."

比如形容 pioneering researcher,可以说 "a lone wolf in the academic pack" 或 "a navigator charting unexplored waters"。 He/She is [metaphorical image], [elaboration of why this image fits]."

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
He is that rare bird, a scientist who works independently of any institution.

比喻类委婉表达 rare bird black sheep odd one out lone wolf maverick outsider unconventional figure

作者用 rare bird 这个 metaphorical expression 来 describe Cochran,表面是在 praise his uniqueness,但实际 implies 他是 academic outsider,不被 mainstream institutions 接纳。 对 main argument 的作用是 establish credibility through 'maverick genius' narrative 的同时,也 prepare readers for controversial content,营造出 'daring to speak uncomfortable truths' 的 rhetorical stance。

    P1
The idea that some groups of people may be more intelligent than others is one of those hypotheses that dare not speak its name.

委婉表达类 dare not speak its name the elephant in the room unmentionable taboo subject forbidden topic unspeakable politically incorrect

作者开篇就用 dare not speak its name 来 frame the hypothesis,明确 signal 这是 socially sensitive territory,可能涉及 racial or ethnic implications。这个 euphemism 既 acknowledges the taboo nature,又通过 literary allusion 增加 intellectual distance,让 controversial content seem more academic and less offensive。对 thesis 的作用是 preemptively defend against criticism,营造 'brave truth-seeker challenging political correctness' 的 narrative frame,为 Cochran's controversial argument 争取 intellectual legitimacy 而非 moral condemnation。

    P1
He helped popularize the idea that some diseases not previously thought to have a bacterial cause were actually infections, which aroused much controversy when it was first suggested.

对比类历史铺垫 aroused much controversy when it was first suggested aroused much controversy initially met with skepticism once considered heretical challenged conventional wisdom revolutionary idea paradigm shift

作者 strategically mention Cochran's previous controversial-but-correct hypothesis 来 build credibility for his current even more controversial claim。 这个 precedent serves as implicit defense,暗示 controversy doesn't equal incorrectness,反而可能 indicate breakthrough thinking。对 main argument 的作用是 preemptively counter skepticism,将 Cochran 塑造成 'visionary outsider' rather than 'fringe crank',为后文 explosive claim about intelligence differences 建立 intellectual legitimacy 和 pattern of 'uncomfortable truths'。

    P2
Even he, however, might tremble at the thought of what he is about to do.

情态动词类夸张表达 might tremble would hesitate dare not fear to shrink from recoil at blanch at the thought

作者用 might tremble 和 even he 的 combination 来 maximize dramatic effect,言外之意是:'这次的 hypothesis 比之前所有争议都更 explosive'。Tremble 这个 visceral reaction 暗示不仅是 intellectual controversy,还可能有 serious social or professional consequences。对 thesis 的作用是 double-edged: 一方面 build suspense 吸引读者继续读;另一方面 preemptively acknowledge 这是 extremely sensitive territory,为可能的 backlash 做 rhetorical cushioning,营造 'dangerous truth' 的 narrative frame,让读者 prepared for shocking content about intelligence differences。

    P2
Together with another two scientists, he is publishing a paper which not only suggests that one group of humanity is more intelligent than the others, but explains the process that has brought this about. The group in question is a particular people originated from central Europe.

模糊限制语 the group in question a particular people certain population this demographic the community concerned said group the population under study

作者用 vague labeling 而非 explicit ethnic identification,言外之意是 acknowledge this is extremely sensitive territory 需要 linguistic caution。Avoid naming 既是 rhetorical protection (harder to accuse of targeting specific group),也 frame the discussion as scientific rather than social or political。对 main argument 的作用是 strategic: maintain appearance of objective scientific inquiry while discussing inherently sensitive topic about group differences。这种 linguistic distancing 试图 separate scientific claim from social implications,但 paradoxically 这种 evasiveness itself reveals 作者 awareness of the inflammatory nature of the claim。

    P3
These facts, however, have previously been thought unrelated. The former has been put down to social effects, such as a strong tradition of valuing education. The latter was seen as a (an) consequence of genetic isolation.

转折类对比 however nevertheless yet but on the contrary conversely in contrast

作者用 however 和 previously been thought 的 combination 来 signal 他将 reject conventional explanations,言外之意是:'之前的 social and isolation explanations 都错了,真相是 natural selection'。Put down to 和 was seen as 用 passive voice 创造 impersonal distance,暗示这些是 lazy or superficial explanations。对 main thesis 的作用是 clear rhetorical move: establish that existing explanations fail to connect intelligence and disease,为 Cochran's unified evolutionary explanation 清理 intellectual space,让他的 controversial hypothesis seem like necessary correction rather than provocative speculation。

    P3
Dr. Cochran suggests that the intelligence and diseases are intimately linked.

强调类因果表达 intimately linked intrinsically connected fundamentally related directly tied to causally bound inextricably linked deeply intertwined

这个 strong language serves 他的 thesis: natural selection is the common cause 同时 producing both high intelligence and genetic diseases。对 overall argument 的作用是 elevate Cochran's hypothesis from interesting speculation to scientific explanation,用 confident causal language 来 persuade readers 这是 breakthrough understanding rather than controversial conjecture,为 paradigm-shifting claim 争取 explanatory authority。

    P3
His argument is that the unusual history of these people has subjected them to unique evolutionary pressures that have resulted in this paradoxical state of affairs.

委婉表达类历史暗示 unusual history unique circumstances particular historical experience distinctive past special historical conditions uncommon background exceptional historical trajectory

作者用 unusual history 这个 euphemism 来 reference 具体的 historical persecution and isolation without explicitly naming it,言外之意是:'这个群体经历的 specific oppression created selective pressures for intelligence'。这个 vague phrasing allows 作者 make evolutionary argument while avoiding explicit discussion of anti-Semitism or cultural trauma。对 thesis 的作用是 critical but problematic: frame historical oppression as 'evolutionary pressure' that 'resulted in' beneficial traits,这将 painful history recast as genetic advantage,是 highly controversial move 因为它 potentially justifies past persecution as having evolutionary benefit。这个 euphemistic framing 试图 make explosive claim seem scientifically neutral。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为客观中立( objective and mildly respectful reporting of a controversial scientific hypothesis)。

  • rare bird P1

议论文的 core characteristic 是提出并论证一个 arguable position,而说明文的 opening 通常是 neutral introduction of a topic,新闻报道则是 factual lead 直接陈述 what happened。本文开篇的 'some groups may be more intelligent than others' 以及 'hypotheses that dare not speak its name' 明确展示了一个 controversial claim,这是典型的 argumentative opening,而非 expository description 或 news reporting。

说明文只是 explain how something works 或 describe what something is,新闻报道则是 present facts and events。本文第二段明确指出 'publishing a paper which suggests...and explains the process',第三段进一步提出 'intelligence and diseases are intimately linked' 这一 specific thesis,并用 'his argument is' 来引导,这是典型的 argumentative structure。

议论文的作者会通过 language choices 显示自己在 take sides 或 defend a viewpoint。 本文用 'dare not speak its name', 'rare bird', 'might tremble at the thought' 等 evaluative language,显示作者在 frame the controversy 并引导读者 see the significance of the argument,这是 persuasive writing 的标志。
