It is speculated that gardens arise from a basic human need in the individuals who made them: the need for creative expression. There is no doubt that gardens evidence an irrepressible urge to create, express, fashion, and beautify and that self-expression is a basic human urge; yet when one looks at the photographs of the gardens created by the homeless, it strikes one that, for all their diversity of styles, these gardens speak of various other fundamental urges, beyond that of decoration and creative expression.

One of these urges has to do with creating a state of peace in the midst of turbulence, a "still point of the turning world," to borrow a phrase from T. S. Eliot. A sacred place of peace, however crude it may be, is a distinctly human need, as opposed to shelter, which is a distinctly animal need. This distinction is so much so that where the latter is lacking, as it is for these unlikely gardeners, the former becomes all the more urgent. Composure is a state of mind made possible by the structuring of one's relation to one's environment. The gardens of the homeless, which are in effect homeless gardens, introduce form into an urban environment where it either didn't exist or was not discernible as such. In so doing they give composure to a segment of the inarticulate environment in which they take their stand.

Another urge or need that these gardens appear to respond to, or to arise from, is so intrinsic that we are barely ever conscious of its abiding claims on us. When we are deprived of green, of plants, of trees, most of us give in to a demoralization of spirit which we usually blame on some psychological conditions, until one day we find ourselves in a garden and feel the oppression vanish as if by magic. In most of the homeless gardens of New York City the actual cultivation of plants is unfeasible, yet even so the compositions often seem to represent attempts to call forth the spirit of plant and animal life, if only symbolically, through a clumplike arrangement of materials, an introduction of colors, small pools of water, and a frequent presence of petals or leaves as well as of stuffed animals. On display here are various fantasy elements whose reference, at some basic level, seems to be the natural world. It is this implicit or explicit reference to nature that fully justifies the use of the word garden, though in a "liberated" sense, to describe these synthetic constructions. In them we can see biophilia – a yearning for contact with nonhuman life – assuming uncanny representational forms.

3 段逐段主旨与解读

逐段拆解2013年考研英语一真题 的这篇原文——每段给出英文段落主旨、段落标题与中文解读,并提炼一条「这段为什么这样读」的具体方法。

  1. P1

    Beyond Creative Expression

Homeless gardens reveal fundamental human needs beyond creative self-expression.

    本段承担 introduction 的作用,它先从人们熟悉的“花园用于 creative expression”切入,再提出“还有其他基本欲求”这一问题;这样便为后两段分别解释 peace、order 与 biophilia 铺设了清晰的论证框架。

    抓住让步后的转折
  2. P2

    Creating Peace and Order

Homeless gardens create peace and order in a turbulent urban environment.

本段是对文章总旨中“the need for peace and order amid chaos”的首次具体论证;作者说明花园并非奢侈 decoration,而是无家可归者在缺乏稳定居所时,用以获得 composure、重建环境秩序的精神实践。

    串联和平、形式与镇定
  3. P3

    Biophilia in Symbolic Gardens

Homeless gardens express biophilia through symbolic representations of nature.

本段完成对文章总旨中 biophilia 的论证,并把论述推进得更深入:即使现实条件使 cultivation 不可能,人仍会借助 symbolic forms 维系与自然的联系;这最终证明,无家可归者的花园是基本生命需求的创造性外化。

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 gardens created by the homeless

What does the author suggest about the gardens created by the homeless?

    • A They are mainly intended to display artistic skill.
    • B They prove that homeless people value style over survival.
    • C They reveal fundamental human needs beyond artistic decoration.
    • D They serve as substitutes for permanent housing.
    • E They follow a common style despite their different materials.
    • F They are valued chiefly for their decorative beauty.

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 place of peace urgent

Why does the author consider a place of peace especially urgent for the homeless?

    • A Because shelter is a uniquely human rather than animal need.
    • B Because peace can provide the homeless with physical protection.
    • C Because urban environments are naturally peaceful places.
    • D Because the absence of shelter makes the need for composure more pressing.
    • E Because gardens eliminate the homeless people's need for shelter.
    • F Because a sacred place guarantees a stable home.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:D

正确项将原文的 where the latter is lacking 与 the former becomes all the more urgent 压缩为清晰因果:shelter 的缺失并没有取消 peace 的需要,反而使 composure 更 pressing。它还用 composure 概括 place of peace 的心理功能,保持了作者从空间到精神状态的论证。障碍在于考生容易按生活常识认为 shelter 必然优先,从而错过作者刻意强调的 paradoxical relation。

双栏因果对照 最快路径是用 place of peace 与 urgent 定位 第2段,再跳读同段的比较和条件结构,不必逐句精译。把 shelter 与 peace 画成两个对照栏,在 shelter 一栏标记 lacking,在 peace 一栏标记 all the more urgent;随后只保留能严格复现“左栏缺失,右栏增强”关系的正确项。这个关系图比逐个翻译 six options 更快。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 synthetic constructions

What do the synthetic constructions in the homeless gardens most clearly demonstrate?

    • A A practical method of growing plants in urban spaces.
    • B A desire to replace wildlife with artificial objects.
    • C An attempt to conceal psychological demoralization.
    • D A preference for colorful objects over living plants.
    • E A yearning for contact with nonhuman life in symbolic forms.
    • F A rejection of the conventional meaning of nature.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:E

该项准确整合了段落的两个核心层次:yearning for contact with nonhuman life 对应 biophilia 的明确定义,in symbolic forms 对应 if only symbolically 以及 representational forms。

这个 opening paragraph 通过 contrast 的手法,先承认 creative expression 这个 surface-level explanation,然后用 yet 进行 turn,引出文章的 central argument:homeless gardens 反映的是 beyond creative expression 的 other fundamental urges,为后文展开 two main needs 做好 setup

    提出表层观点并质疑
  2. 分论点 P2

    在混乱中创造平静

这个 body paragraph 阐述第一个 fundamental urge:在 turbulence 中 create peace 的 need。作者通过 distinction between peace (human need) 和 shelter (animal need) 来 elevate 这个 urge 的 significance,强调 homeless gardens 通过 introduce form 到 urban environment 来 give composure,满足这种 intrinsically human 的需求

这个 supporting paragraph 提供第一个 specific evidence 来 support main thesis。它 demonstrates 第一个 fundamental need (peace amid chaos),通过 contrast human vs. animal needs 来 strengthen argument,并且用 concrete analysis (structuring relation to environment, introducing form) 来 explain 这些 gardens 如何 fulfill 这个 need,直接 supports 主旨中的 'need for peace and order amid chaos'

    论证秩序需求
  3. 分论点 P3

    对自然生命的渴望

这个 second body paragraph 阐述另一个 fundamental urge:biophilia,即对 nonhuman life 的 yearning。作者 describes 当我们 deprived of green/plants 时会有 demoralization,然后 analyzes homeless gardens 如何通过 symbolic representations (colors, water, petals, stuffed animals) 来 call forth 这种 spirit of life, demonstrate 这种 intrinsic need 即使在 actual cultivation unfeasible 的情况下依然 assumes representational forms

这个 concluding body paragraph 提供第二个 core evidence, directly addresses 主旨中的 'biophilia—an intrinsic yearning for connection with nature and life'。通过 detailed description of symbolic elements 和 introduction of technical term (biophilia),这段 completes the argument, showing 即使 'actual cultivation is impossible',这种 need 仍然 finds expression, fully supporting 文章的 main claim about fundamental human needs

    论证自然联结渴望
MAIN IDEA · 速判主旨

4 步定位这篇文章的主旨

不读完全篇也能锁定主旨——以下 4 步按2013年考研英语一真题 这篇原文的实际行文顺序给出,每步说明看哪里、看出什么,可直接迁移到其他考研英语文章。

  1. 抓转折后核心论点 P1

议论文的 thesis statement 通常出现在首段末尾或转折词之后。本文首段用 yet when one looks at 引出真正的 main argument,明确指出 gardens 不仅仅是 creative expression,还 speak of various other fundamental urges,这就是文章的 central claim

  2. 追踪分论点标记词 P2 P3

当首段提出 various fundamental urges 后,第二段用 One of these urges,第三段用 Another urge 来 elaborate。这种 parallel structure 表明作者在 systematically develop 首段提出的 thesis,每个主体段都是对 main idea 的一个 supporting dimension

  3. 锁定核心抽象概念 P2 P3

第二段的 peace 和 composure 是第一个 fundamental urge 的 conceptual core,第三段的 biophilia(定义为 a yearning for contact with nonhuman life)是第二个 urge 的 technical term。这些 high-level abstractions 就是作者想要 convey 的 main points

  4. 整合总分论述层次 P1 P2 P3

    文章 thesis 是 gardens reflect needs beyond creative expression,然后用两段分别阐述 peace/order 和 biophilia 这两个 needs。主旨就是将这个 general pattern(beyond X)和 specific examples(peace + biophilia)结合起来

主旨信号词 yet P1 beyond P1 fundamental urges P1 One of these P2 Another urge P3 need P2 biophilia P3

  • irrepressible 无法抑制的;压抑不住的

    我们先从word structure入手:ir-是negative prefix,repress是'压制',-ible表示'能够被...',combine起来就是'不能被压制的'。再看context,这个词modify的是urge to create and express,而entire paragraph都在discuss gardens作为fundamental human need的manifestation。如果一个urge是fundamental且basic的,用irrepressible来describe它,logical上应该表示这种urge非常强烈、无法被suppressed。Construction分析和contextual clues完美align,都指向'无法抑制的、压抑不住的'这个meaning。

    词根剖析与语境验证的三角定位法
  • turbulence 动荡;混乱

    从morphology看,turbulent + -ence构成noun,表示混乱的state。从immediate context看,它和peace形成direct contrast,是peace的opposite。从broader context看,这是在描述homeless people的living situation,他们的life inherently充满instability和chaos。三个layers的clues都converge到同一个meaning:动荡、混乱的状态。这种multi-layered verification让我们的inference非常confident。

    三层语境递进分析法
  • composure 镇定;沉着

从composition of the word看,它和compose (使平静) related。Text给出explicit definition:a state of mind。这个state是从creating peace和introducing form这些actions中arise的。所以composure不是简单的'平静',而是通过structuring和organizing environment达到的那种内心的镇定和从容。整个reasoning chain从etymology到explicit definition到functional context, step by step地narrow down meaning,最终指向'镇定、沉着'这个concept。

    定义追踪与概念网络映射法
  • demoralization 士气低落;意志消沉

    Morphologically,de- + moral + -ization指向'失去士气、精神状态deterioration'。Contextually,它是being deprived of nature的consequence,和oppression parallel,是一种negative psychological state。而且severity足够让people误以为是psychological disorder。把morphological clue (失去士气) 和contextual severity (被当作心理问题) combine起来,demoralization指的是精神层面的颓丧、意志消沉、士气低落这种comprehensive的negative state。

    词根直译与对比深化法
  • biophilia 热爱生命(尤指自然);亲生命性

这是最straightforward的case:morphology (bio- + -philia = love of life) + explicit textual definition (yearning for contact with nonhuman life) + entire paragraph's thematic content (human need for nature) 三者完全converge。作者甚至intentionally用dash来provide definition,因为recognize这是一个potentially unfamiliar technical term。所有evidence都清晰地point to一个meaning:对生命、对自然的热爱和亲近。

RHETORIC · 修辞手法

6 处修辞手法与仿写

每处修辞给出它在本文的具体用法、同类信号词清单与一份可直接套用的 写作仿写建议——读完能认,也能写。

  • 引用论证

    P2

作者在第二段中 borrow 了 T. S. Eliot 的诗句 "still point of the turning world",这个 poetic reference 精准地 capture 了无家可归者花园的 core function。这种 literary allusion 不仅提升了 argument 的 authority 和 cultural depth,更重要的是用 established metaphor 来 illuminate 一个抽象概念——在 chaos 中创造 peace。这个 quotation 让读者立即 grasp 花园作为 spiritual sanctuary 的 essence,强化了文章 beyond decoration 的 main thesis。

信号词 to borrow a phrase from as [author] puts it in the words of to quote as [author] observed [author] once said echoing [author]'s view

仿写: 在使用引用论证时,要确保 quoted material 与你的 argument 有 organic connection。不要 simply drop a quote,而要 explain its relevance。仿写模版:When discussing [concept A], we can borrow [Author]'s insight that "[quotation]", which perfectly captures [how this relates to your point]. 比如:When examining the need for mental refuge, T. S. Eliot's phrase "still point of the turning world" encapsulates how these gardens function as anchors of stability amid urban chaos.

  • 对比论证

    P2

第二段中作者 establish 了一个 fundamental contrast:human need (peace) versus animal need (shelter)。这个 distinction 不是 simple comparison,而是 hierarchical contrast,用来 argue 精神需求的 primacy。通过 juxtapose "sacred place of peace" 和 "shelter",作者 demonstrate 即使在 lacking basic animal needs 的情况下,human beings 仍然 prioritize 精神层面的 composure。这个 contrast 直接 serve 文章主旨,证明花园 reflect 的是 fundamental human nature,而非 mere decoration impulse。

信号词 as opposed to in contrast to while whereas unlike on the other hand conversely however rather than

仿写: 使用对比论证时,确保 contrasted elements 处于 same logical level 且能 serve your argument。仿写模版:[Element A] is [characteristic X], as opposed to [Element B], which is [characteristic Y]. This distinction is so much so that [consequence/implication]. 例如:Creativity is a human impulse, as opposed to survival instinct, which is an animal drive. This distinction reveals that even in deprivation, humans seek meaning beyond mere existence.

  • 因果论证

    P2

第二段中出现 implicit causal chain:because shelter is lacking → the need for peace becomes more urgent。作者在 "where the latter is lacking...the former becomes all the more urgent" 这句中 establish 了 inverse causal relationship。这个 causation 支撑了文章 thesis,说明花园不是 luxury 而是 response to deprivation。第二段末尾 "In so doing they give composure" 也展示了 causation:通过 introduce form → achieve composure。这些 causal links 让 argument 从 observation 升级为 explanation。

信号词 because since as a result consequently therefore thus so that in so doing whereby

仿写: 构建因果论证时要确保 causation 而非仅仅 correlation。仿写模版:When/Where [condition X exists], [consequence Y] becomes [more/less] [adjective]. 或者:By [doing action A], [subject] [achieves result B]. 例如:When basic resources are absent, the need for symbolic meaning becomes more pressing. By creating ordered spaces, individuals establish psychological stability.

  • 举例论证

    P3

第三段中作者 provide concrete examples of what appears in homeless gardens:"clumplike arrangement of materials, an introduction of colors, small pools of water, petals or leaves, stuffed animals"。这些 specific instances 不是 random listing,而是 serve 作为 evidence 来 support the claim about biophilia。通过 tangible examples,抽象的 "yearning for contact with nonhuman life" 变得 vivid and believable。这些 examples demonstrate 即使 actual cultivation 不可行,人们仍通过 symbolic representations 来 fulfill 对 nature 的 need。

信号词 for example for instance such as including namely specifically to illustrate as seen in

仿写: 选择 examples 时要确保它们 representative 且能 clearly illustrate your point。仿写模版:[General claim]. For instance/For example, [specific example 1], [specific example 2], and [specific example 3]. These [examples] demonstrate/reveal/show that [connection back to claim]. 例如:Urban dwellers seek nature substitutes. For instance, office workers keep desk plants, apartment residents hang nature photography, and commuters listen to ambient nature sounds. These behaviors reveal an intrinsic need for natural connection.

  • 排比修辞

    P1

第一段中出现 powerful parallelism:"create, express, fashion, and beautify"。这四个 verbs 的 parallel structure 创造了 rhythmic momentum,强调 creative urge 的 multifaceted nature。通过 accumulation of similar terms,作者 build intensity 并 establish 这种 urge 的 comprehensiveness。虽然这些词 semantically overlap,但 collective effect 比 single term 更 forceful,为后文 "beyond...creative expression" 的 turn 做好铺垫。这个 parallelism 让 creative impulse 显得 undeniable and fundamental。

    信号词 and , or both...and not only...but also either...or neither...nor

仿写: 构建排比时要确保 parallel elements 在 grammar and meaning 上 coordinate。仿写模版:[Verb 1], [verb 2], [verb 3], and [verb 4]. 或 [Noun phrase 1], [noun phrase 2], and [noun phrase 3]. 关键是 maintain consistent structure。例如:Humans seek to understand, interpret, organize, and transform their environments. 或:The need for beauty, the desire for order, and the yearning for meaning drive human creativity.

  • 比喻修辞

    P3

第三段使用 implicit metaphor 将 homeless gardens 比作 attempts to "call forth the spirit of plant and animal life"。这个 metaphorical language ("call forth the spirit") 赋予 physical arrangements 以 spiritual dimension。通过把 synthetic constructions 比作有能力 summon life essence 的 ritual acts,作者 elevate 这些花园从 mere decoration 到 symbolic representations of biophilia。这个 figurative language 让读者 understand gardens as not just objects but as expressions of deep psychological need。

信号词 like as as if serves as acts as represents symbolizes embodies

仿写: 使用比喻时要确保 vehicle (用来比喻的事物) 和 tenor (被比喻的对象) 有 meaningful connection。仿写模版:[Subject A] serves as/functions as/acts as [metaphorical B], through which [explanation of connection]. 例如:Urban gardens serve as anchors of meaning, through which displaced individuals root themselves psychologically in unstable environments. 避免 clichéd metaphors,选择 fresh and apt comparisons。

IMPLIED MEANING · 言外之意

4 处话里有话

作者没有明说、但靠信号词传递出来的态度与暗示——每处给出原文片段、信号词类型与解读。

  • 花园功能超越装饰性表达

    P1
There is no doubt that gardens evidence an irrepressible urge to create, express, fashion, and beautify and that self-expression is a basic human urge; yet when one looks at the photographs of the gardens created by the homeless, it strikes one that, for all their diversity of styles, these gardens speak of various other fundamental urges, beyond that of decoration and creative expression.

转折类 yet however but nevertheless nonetheless still though

作者通过 yet 这个转折,implicitly convey 一个重要信息:虽然 creative expression 是普遍认可的 garden motivation,但对于 homeless gardens 来说,这不是 the whole story。言外之意是这些花园 reveal deeper psychological and spiritual needs,远比 decoration 更 fundamental。这个转折对文章主旨至关重要,因为它 establish 了全文的 analytical direction:作者要 go beyond surface-level interpretation,探索 homeless gardens 背后的 deeper human needs,为后续段落分析 peace-seeking 和 biophilia 奠定基础。

  • 精神需求优先于生存需求

    P2
A sacred place of peace, however crude it may be, is a distinctly human need, as opposed to shelter, which is a distinctly animal need.

对比类 as opposed to in contrast to unlike rather than instead of whereas while

通过 as opposed to 这个对比,作者 implicitly argue 一个深刻观点:即使是 homeless 缺乏 basic shelter 这种 animal need,他们依然 prioritize creating sacred peaceful space 这种 distinctly human need。言外之意是人的 spiritual dimension 如此 fundamental,以至于在 extreme deprivation 的情况下反而变得 more urgent。这个对比对主旨的价值在于:它 demonstrate 了 homeless gardens 不是 luxury 或 decoration,而是 response to essential human needs,证明了这些花园 reflect something profoundly human beyond mere survival instinct。

  • 环境剥夺导致精神压抑

    P3
When we are deprived of green, of plants, of trees, most of us give in to a demoralization of spirit which we usually blame on some psychological conditions, until one day we find ourselves in a garden and feel the oppression vanish as if by magic.

时间转折类 until not...until only when once as soon as when finally after

通过 until 这个时间转折,作者 implicitly convey 一个重要观察:人们通常 misattribute their spiritual demoralization to psychological factors,实际上 true cause 是 deprivation of nature。言外之意是 biophilia 如此 intrinsic 以至于我们 barely conscious of it,只有当 green environment restored 时才 suddenly realize 其 fundamental importance。这对主旨的作用是 support the concept of biophilia:它不是 conscious preference,而是 unconscious need,这解释了为什么 homeless individuals 即使在 unfeasible cultivation conditions 下仍要 create symbolic representations of nature。

  • 象征性弥补实际缺失

    P3
In most of the homeless gardens of New York City the actual cultivation of plants is unfeasible, yet even so the compositions often seem to represent attempts to call forth the spirit of plant and animal life, if only symbolically, through a clumplike arrangement of materials, an introduction of colors, small pools of water, and a frequent presence of petals or leaves as well as of stuffed animals.

让步转折类 yet even so nevertheless nonetheless despite in spite of even though although

通过 yet even so 这个让步转折,作者 implicitly argue:即使 actual cultivation impossible, homeless gardeners 仍然 create symbolic representations,这 reveals biophilia 的 compelling force。言外之意是:when a need is truly fundamental,人们会 find alternative ways to satisfy it,即使只是 symbolically。这对主旨极其重要,因为它 provide concrete evidence for biophilia's intrinsic nature:不是 nice-to-have preference,而是 so essential that even symbolic representation serves as meaningful substitute,证明了对 nature connection 的 yearning 是 fundamental human need。

议论文的 opening 往往会 present an argument 或 thesis statement,用 'speculated', 'argued', 'believed' 这类 verbs 来 introduce 作者的 position。说明文会用 'is', 'exists', 'functions as' 这种 factual language,新闻报道则会用 'reported', 'announced', 'occurred' 来 describe events

  2. 逻辑连接词推进论证 P1 P2 P3

议论文会通过 'however', 'yet', 'beyond that' 等 connectors 来 develop progressive reasoning 和 refine arguments。说明文只会 add information in parallel structure,新闻报道会 chronologically present events 而不会 层层推进论证

  3. 抽象概念做分析 P1 P2 P3

议论文会用 abstract nouns 和 conceptual frameworks 来 analyze phenomena,比如 'urge', 'need', 'composure', 'demoralization'。说明文会 stick to concrete terms 和 technical vocabulary,新闻报道会用 specific names, dates, and events

  4. 证据为观点服务 P1 P3

议论文会用 evidence to support interpretation,通过 'it strikes one', 'it seems', 'appear to' 这些 phrases 来 present subjective analysis。说明文会 present evidence as facts,新闻报道会 quote sources 和 attribute information

  5. 三维识别议论文 P1 P2 P3

议论文的 DNA 在于 author's visible presence in interpreting and arguing,而非 invisible narrator presenting facts 或 reporting events。这三个 signals 综合起来 create a distinct rhetorical pattern that distinguishes argumentation from exposition or reportage
