The growth of the use of English as the world's primary language for international communication has obviously been continuing for several decades. But even as the number of English speakers expands further there are signs that the global predominance of the language may fade within the foreseeable future.

Complex international, economic, technological and cultural changes could start to diminish the leading position of English as the language of the world market, and UK interests which enjoy advantage from the breadth of English usage would consequently face new pressures. Those realistic possibilities are highlighted in the study presented by David Graddol. His analysis should therefore end any self-contentedness among those who may believe that the global position of English is so stable that the young generations of the United Kingdom do not need additional language capabilities.

David Graddol concludes that monoglot English graduates face a bleak economic future as qualified multilingual youngsters from other countries are proving to have a competitive advantage over their British counterparts in global companies and organisations. Alongside that, many countries are introducing English into the primary-school curriculum but British schoolchildren and students do not appear to be gaining greater encouragement to achieve fluency in other languages.

If left to themselves, such trends will diminish the relative strength of the English language in international education markets as the demand for educational resources in languages, such as Spanish, Arabic or Mandarin grows and international business process outsourcing in other languages such as Japanese, French and German, spreads.

The changes identified by David Graddol all present clear and major challenges to the UK's providers of English language teaching to people of other countries and to broader education business sectors. The English language teaching sector directly earns nearly £1.3 billion for the UK in invisible exports and our other education related exports earn up to £10 billion a year more. As the international education market expands, the recent slowdown in the numbers of international students studying in the main English-speaking countries is likely to continue, especially if there are no effective strategic policies to prevent such slippage.

The anticipation of possible shifts in demand provided by this study is significant: It gives a basis to all organisations which seek to promote the learning and use of English, a basis for planning to meet the possibilities of what could be a very different operating environment. That is a necessary and practical approach. In this as in much else, those who wish to influence the future must prepare for it.

What do the signs mentioned in the passage suggest about English?

    • A Its number of speakers will stop growing in the coming decades.
    • B It will remain the unquestioned language of international communication.
    • C Its global predominance may fade in the foreseeable future.
    • D It will no longer be used for international communication.
    • E Its expansion will be limited to the United Kingdom.
    • F Its leading position has already disappeared worldwide.

该项准确改写 global predominance may fade within the foreseeable future。global predominance 对应“全球主导地位”,may fade 保留了原文的可能性语气,in the foreseeable future 对应时间范围,三个限制都没有丢失。

Graddol analysis

What belief should Graddol's analysis challenge among people in the United Kingdom?

    • A English has no stable global position at present.
    • B UK interests should withdraw from the world market.
    • C Only technological changes can affect the use of English.
    • D British young people do not need additional language capabilities.
    • E English teaching should be removed from British schools.
    • F The global language market is too stable to require planning.

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 multilingual youngsters global companies and organisations

Why do multilingual youngsters have an advantage in global companies and organisations?

    • A They are more likely to study in the United Kingdom.
    • B They receive greater encouragement to learn English at primary school.
    • C They work only for organisations outside the global market.
    • D They have replaced English as the language of global business.
    • E They possess language skills that monoglot British graduates lack.
    • F They are protected from all economic uncertainty.

该项将 qualified multilingual youngsters have a competitive advantage over their British counterparts 压缩为能力差异,并以 monoglot British graduates 点明比较另一端。

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 left to themselves trends

What is likely to happen if the trends are left to themselves?

    • A English will disappear from international education markets.
    • B Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin will no longer need educational resources.
    • C Business process outsourcing will be confined to English.
    • D The demand for all language resources will decline equally.
    • E International education markets will cease to expand.
    • F English will lose relative strength in international education markets.

该项直接同义改写 will diminish the relative strength of the English language in international education markets。

What may occur without effective strategic policies?

    • A The slowdown in international student numbers is likely to continue.
    • B All international students will leave the main English-speaking countries.
    • C Education related exports will immediately earn more than £10 billion.
    • D The international education market will stop expanding.
    • E UK providers will no longer offer English language teaching.
    • F International student numbers will certainly rise in every country.

    该项保留了原文完整的预测骨架:recent slowdown、international students、likely to continue,并与 if there are no effective strategic policies 形成条件对应。

句尾趋势续接 用 effective strategic policies 直达 第5段 句尾,把 without 转为“no policy”。随后只做“谓语续接判断”:寻找 no policy 所依附的 is likely to continue,而非回头计算任何金额。

  6. 第 6 段 定位词 shifts in demand significant

Why is the study's anticipation of shifts in demand significant?

    • A It guarantees that English will keep its leading position.
    • B It gives organisations a basis for planning for a different operating environment.
    • C It proves that demand shifts have already ended.
    • D It enables organisations to avoid all changes in their environment.
    • E It limits the learning and use of English to selected organisations.
    • F It replaces the need for organisations to prepare for the future.

It gives a basis to all organisations ... for planning to meet the possibilities of what could be a very different operating environment。organisations、basis、planning 和 different operating environment 均对应原文核心信息,并保留了 could be 的开放性。

这个 introduction 通过 contrasting structure(but 转折)establish 了整篇文章的 argumentative foundation:英语的 current dominance 和 potential decline 之间的 tension,为后续 supporting arguments 做好 thematic setup

这个 supporting paragraph 通过引入 David Graddol 的 study 来 provide concrete evidence:complex international, economic, technological and cultural changes 会 diminish English 的 leading position。

这个 first body paragraph 通过 appeal to authority(David Graddol's analysis)来 substantiate 引言中的 claim。

继续 elaborate Graddol 的 findings,这段 focus on specific consequence:monoglot English graduates 面临 bleak economic future,因为 qualified multilingual youngsters 有 competitive advantage。同时 contrast 了其他国家 introducing English into primary-school curriculum 与 British students 缺乏 language capabilities 的 paradox

这段 project future trends:如果 'left to themselves',这些 trends 会 diminish English 的 relative strength in international education markets。具体表现为对 Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin 等语言的 demand grows,以及 business outsourcing in Japanese, French, German 等语言 spreads

这个 third body paragraph 通过 conditional reasoning('if left to themselves')将前面的 observations 转化为 future projections。它 enumerate specific languages 来 concretize 'multilingual competition' 概念,directly supporting 主旨中的 'demographic and educational shifts' 部分

这段 specify economic stakes:Graddol identified 的 changes present clear challenges to UK's English teaching sector,这个 sector earns nearly £1.3 billion in invisible exports, broader education exports earn up to £10 billion。在 international education market expands 的同时,international students 数量 slowdown is likely to continue without strategic policies

这个 fourth body paragraph 通过 financial data(£1.3 billion, £10 billion)让 argument 更 tangible and urgent。它 connect abstract linguistic trends 到 concrete economic consequences, directly supporting 主旨中 'UK must maintain competitiveness' 的 imperative,并为最后的 policy call 提供 economic rationale

这个 concluding paragraph 回到 Graddol study 的 significance:它 provides anticipation of possible shifts,给 organisations promoting English 提供 a basis for planning 来 meet 'a very different operating environment'。最后用 universal principle 升华:'those who wish to influence the future must prepare for it'

这个 conclusion 通过 shift from analysis to recommendation 来 complete argumentative arc。它 reframe 整个 discussion:不是 simply warning about decline,而是 emphasizing proactive planning 的 necessity。最后一句的 aphoristic quality('influence the future must prepare for it')给 argument 一个 memorable and authoritative closure, directly echoing 主旨中的 'strategic policies' 要求

MAIN IDEA ·

议论文的 opening 常用 concession-refutation pattern,先承认 common view 再用 'But' 引出 author's actual stance。

议论文的 persuasive goal 常通过 'could/would/will/may' 等 modal expressions 体现,表达 potential consequences 或 future scenarios。这些 projections 揭示作者为什么要 make this argument,即 what's at stake,从而指向 underlying thesis。

议论文的 ultimate goal 是 persuade readers to adopt a view 或 take action,所以 final paragraphs 常包含 'must/should/need to' 等 directive language。

如果你从 first paragraph's turning point、authoritative evidence、future-oriented warnings、和 final recommendations 中提取的 key ideas 都 converge on the same message,那就确认了 main thesis。

主旨信号词 fade P1 self-contentedness P2 bleak P3 competitive advantage P3 trends will diminish P4 clear and major challenges P5 must prepare P6

MAIN IDEA ·

Despite English's current dominance as the global language, demographic, economic, and educational shifts suggest its predominance may decline. The UK must develop strategic multilingual policies to maintain competitiveness, as monoglot English speakers face disadvantages against multilingual competitors in international markets.

首先,from the context 我们看到 predominance 出现在讨论 English 作为 primary language 的段落中,而且用 But 转折暗示这种状态可能改变。

From the direct opposition 来看,monoglot 与 multilingual 形成 stark contrast。From morphology 来看,mono-(one)+ glot(language)的构成非常清晰。From the broader context These three lines of reasoning converge

首先,from the causal structure 我们知道 bleak 与 lacking competitive advantage 直接相关。其次,from the thematic consistency 来看,bleak 属于作者描述 negative trends 的 lexical field。 All evidence points 到同一个方向:bleak 表示 gloomy、hopeless 或 depressing。

Combining these insights, outsourcing

从 referential function 来看,slippage 直接 refers to the slowdown of student numbers。从 morphology 来看,slip + -age 表示 a gradual sliding process。 这些 clues converge 到一个清晰的 conclusion:slippage 指的是 gradual decline 或 loss of position,特别是在 competitive contexts 中。

第一次提到他的 study highlights realistic possibilities,第二次说他 concludes monoglot graduates face bleak future,第三次强调 changes identified by Graddol present challenges。

信号词 presented by according to concludes that identified by study shows research indicates analysis reveals expert argues findings suggest scholars point out as [name] states

According to [expert name]'s [study/analysis/research], [key finding that supports your point]. [Expert name] further [concludes/argues/demonstrates] that [more specific evidence]. These [findings/changes/insights] identified by [expert name] clearly [indicate/suggest/present] [your argument's implication].

    P3

第三段构建了一个 sharp contrast:multilingual youngsters from other countries 与 monoglot English graduates 形成鲜明对比。前者 have competitive advantage in global companies,而后者 face bleak economic future。更进一步的 contrast 是:many countries introduce English into primary schools,但 British students don't gain encouragement for other languages。

信号词 but while whereas in contrast on the other hand however conversely unlike by comparison alternatively on the contrary

哪两个 entities 能最 dramatically illustrate this gap?仿写技巧:使用 parallel structures 来增强 contrast effect,比如 'A does X, but B does Y' 或 'While A has advantage, B faces disadvantage'。记住要 explicitly state the implication——对比本身不是目的,它必须 serve your central argument。 [Group A] are [positive action/state] and consequently [positive outcome], while [Group B] [negative action/state] and thus [negative outcome]. This contrast reveals/demonstrates/highlights that [your argument]. Alongside/Meanwhile, [supporting contrast detail].

    P2 P4

文章第二段明确建立了 causal chain:complex changes could diminish English's position,导致 UK interests face new pressures。第四段更详细展开:if trends are left unchecked(cause),将 diminish relative strength(effect 1),as demand for other languages grows(cause 2)and outsourcing spreads(cause 3)。 因果论证在这里的价值是 establish logical necessity——它告诉读者英语地位下降不是 random possibility,而是 inevitable consequence if no action is taken,从而为文章最后的 strategic policy recommendation 创造 urgency。

信号词 consequently therefore thus as a result because since if...then leads to results in causes due to owing to so that which means

仿写: 构建因果论证时,先 identify clear causal factors,再 trace their logical consequences。 可以构建 multi-step causation(A causes B, which causes C)来展示 complex reality。 [Factor/Action] could/would [consequence], and [affected entity] would consequently [further result]. If [condition] (is/continues), [negative outcome] will [intensify/spread/diminish], especially as/because [contributing factor].

    P4 P5

第四段提供了 concrete examples 来支撑 'demand for other languages' 这一抽象论断:such as Spanish, Arabic or Mandarin(教育市场),以及 Japanese, French and German(商业外包)。这些 specific language names 将 vague notion of 'other languages' 转化为 tangible reality。第五段给出 economic data as examples:£1.3 billion in language teaching exports,£10 billion in broader education exports。这些 precise figures 让 'UK interests' 从 abstract concept 变成 quantifiable stakes。举例的价值在于 grounding the argument in reality——它告诉读者这不是 theoretical speculation,而是 real-world phenomenon with measurable impact。

信号词 such as for example for instance including like namely specifically to illustrate as an example in particular take...as an example

仿写技巧:用 'such as' 或 'for example' 引入 instances,但不要只是 list——每个 example 应该 add a dimension to your argument。数字 examples(statistics, monetary figures)特别 powerful for economic or policy arguments。 [General claim], such as [specific example 1], [example 2] or [example 3]. [Entity] directly [action] [specific figure/amount] in [area], and [related examples] [action] up to [another figure].

    P1 P3

第三段使用 'face a bleak economic future' 将 economic prospects 比作可以 'face' 的对象,这个 metaphorical expression 把抽象的 economic outlook personified 为某种 confrontable entity。' 这些 figurative expressions 让 dry economic and linguistic analysis 带有 emotional undertone,增强 persuasive impact。

仿写注意:在 formal argumentative writing 中,prefer subtle, conventional metaphors over elaborate or creative ones——too flashy metaphors 可能 distract from logic。economic, political 主题常用的 metaphors include movement(fade, grow, shift), physical structures(foundation, framework), journeys(path, direction)。 [Abstract concept] may fade/erode/collapse within [timeframe]. [Group] face a [adjective describing landscape/weather] [future/prospect]. [Trend] could start to diminish/undermine the [position/foundation] of [entity].

    P1 P4

第一段开头使用 parallel structure:'Complex international, economic, technological and cultural changes'——四个形容词 coordinated by commas 形成 rhythmic list,强调 changes 的 multifaceted nature。第四段也有明显排比:'as the demand...grows and...outsourcing...spreads',两个 parallel clauses with similar structure(subject + verb)create momentum。

信号词 and , or as well as both...and not only...but also either...or neither...nor

注意:items in parallelism 应该是 logically comparable(都是 factors, 都是 consequences, 等)。仿写技巧:可以是 adjectives in series(X, Y and Z changes),parallel clauses(as A grows and B spreads),或 parallel sentences(A does X. B does Y. C does Z.)。 [Adj1], [Adj2], [Adj3] and [Adj4] [noun] could [verb]. As [factor 1] [verb1] and [factor 2] [verb2], [consequence] will [verb]. [Entity A] [verb phrase 1], [Entity B] [verb phrase 2], and [Entity C] [verb phrase 3].

there are signs that the global predominance of the language may fade within the foreseeable future

情态词类 may fade may might could would can possibly

    P2
His analysis should therefore end any self-contentedness among those who may believe that the global position of English is so stable

情态词类 should therefore end any self-contentedness should ought to must need to have to require

    P3
many countries are introducing English into the primary-school curriculum but British schoolchildren and students do not appear to be gaining greater encouragement to achieve fluency in other languages

转折类 but however yet nevertheless nonetheless whereas while

The underlying message 潜在信息是:这是一个 deeply ironic 极具讽刺意味的 asymmetry 不对称——当 the world 世界在 learning English 学英语时,UK 却在 falling behind 落后于 multilingual trend 多语趋势。

    P4
If left to themselves, such trends will diminish the relative strength of the English language

If left to themselves if left to if allowed to unless without in the absence of failing to

表面说 if left to themselves 如果放任这些 trends 趋势,will diminish 将削弱 English language strength 英语语言实力。Real implication 真实言外之意是:这不是 distant possibility 遥远可能,而是 current trajectory 当前轨迹;更重要的是,we can and must intervene 我们能够且必须干预。

    P5
the recent slowdown in the numbers of international students studying in the main English-speaking countries is likely to continue, especially if there are no effective strategic policies

情态词类 is likely to continue is likely to is probable that chances are in all likelihood it is expected that tends to

表面陈述 slowdown is likely to continue 放缓很可能持续,特别是 if no effective policies 如果没有有效政策。The deeper meaning 更深层含义是:这个 decline 下降不是 temporary fluctuation 暂时波动而是 structural problem 结构性问题,且 deterioration 恶化 is the default path 是默认路径。这 serves the thesis 服务于主旨 by quantifying 通过量化 the economic stakes 经济风险(£1.3 billion + £10 billion),making the case 使论证 for urgent policy reform 紧急政策改革更 compelling 令人信服且 concrete 具体。

    P6
those who wish to influence the future must prepare for it

情态词类 must prepare must have to need to it is imperative that it is essential that cannot afford not to

表面上说 wish to influence future 希望影响未来的人 must prepare 必须准备。Deeper implication 更深层言外之意是:if you don't prepare 如果不准备,you will lose agency 将失去能动性,become passive victim 成为被动受害者 of changes 变化。这是整篇文章的 rhetorical culmination 修辞高潮,transforms 转化之前所有 analysis and warnings 分析和警告 into a clear mandate 为明确指令:UK must act now 英国必须现在行动。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

如果作者用 'however' 或 'but' 这样的 adversative conjunctions,说明他不是 simply celebrating 现状,而是要 point out 某些 underlying problems 或 potential risks。这种 two-sided presentation 是作者 establishing the need for action 的典型 marker。

在议论文中,authors 如果 frequently reference specific studies 或 named experts 并配合 prescriptive language like 'should',通常是在 building an argument for action。这里作者不是说 'Graddol suggests we might consider',而是说 'His analysis should end self-contentedness',这种 强制性语气 shows 作者 strongly endorses the expert's warning 并 advocates for attitude change。

议论文如果 heavily emphasize negative consequences ('bleak future', 'major challenges') 然后 conclude with strong action imperatives ('must prepare'),作者是在 making a persuasive case for change,不是 neutral analysis。这里作者用 emotionally charged language ('bleak') 和 strong obligation modals ('must') 显示他 deeply concerned 并 actively pushing for response。

Pure description 用 'X is happening';advocacy 用 'X is happening and we should/must respond'。这篇文章从 第2段 的 'should end self-contentedness' 到 第6段 的 'must prepare' 都是 clear advocacy,不是 detached observation。

  • But P1

'But' 在 first paragraph 的 second sentence 引出作者真正关注的 point:尽管 English 在 growing,但它的 dominance 可能 fade。

同类词 but however yet nevertheless nonetheless

  • should P2

'His analysis should therefore end any self-contentedness' 中的 'should' 是 deontic modal expressing obligation。作者在说 Graddol 的研究应当 (morally/logically ought to) wake people up。这不是 tentative suggestion ('might want to consider') 而是 firm recommendation,显示作者 strongly endorses the need for attitude change。

同类词 ought to need to must have to it is necessary to

  • bleak P3

'Bleak economic future' 中的 'bleak' 是 strongly negative evaluative adjective,表达 hopeless or depressing 的意思。虽然 attributed to Graddol,但作者选择 quote 这个 strong word 并 present it without qualification,说明他 agrees with 这个 severe assessment 并用它来 strengthen his argument for action。

同类词 grim dire dismal troubling worrying

  • clear and major challenges P5

'Clear and major challenges' 用两个 intensifying adjectives 强调问题的 evident nature ('clear') 和 importance ('major')。这不是 understated, neutral description ('some issues') 而是 emphatic framing 用来 stress urgency 和 justify the need for action。

同类词 clear challenges major challenges significant problems serious issues substantial difficulties

  • must P6

Final sentence 'those who wish to influence the future must prepare for it' 用 strongest deontic modal 'must' 表达 categorical obligation。这是 unambiguous call to action,不是 suggestion or possibility。'Must' 的使用 shows 作者 view preparation as essential requirement,这是全文 advocacy 的 culmination。

同类词 have to need to it is imperative are required to are obliged to

第1段 中作者提到 'there are signs that the global predominance of the language may fade',这是一个需要论证的 controversial claim。

第2段 中 'Those realistic possibilities are highlighted in the study presented by David Graddol',第3段 也 cite 'David Graddol concludes'。这种 repeated references 到 expert analysis 是为了 strengthen the argument。

第4段 用 'If left to themselves, such trends will diminish...' 展示 conditional reasoning 和 future consequences。这种 'if...then' structure 和 prediction 是为了 convince readers 某个 action 需要被 taken。

第6段 明确表示 'those who wish to influence the future must prepare for it',这是典型的 imperative statement 和 call for action。说明文 conclude with summary of information;新闻 end with latest updates 或 quotes。
