The picture presents a young American girl who is smiling brightly. She is dressed in traditional Chinese costume, wearing an elaborately decorated headdress on her head and a pair of long earrings on her ears. Below the photo runs a line that reads: an American girl in traditional Chinese costume.
Simple as it is, the picture conveys a profound message. The very fact that a Western girl is so charmed by Chinese attire suggests that a fine national culture is no longer confined within its national borders. Instead, it attracts and is shared by people all over the world. In other words, what is truly national is also international; the more distinctive a culture is, the more likely it appeals to the whole of mankind.
As far as I am concerned, this phenomenon fully deserves our applause. In an age of globalization, cultures of different nations are flowing and blending as never before. A wise nation should take pride in and preserve its own cultural identity, while at the same time opening its arms to the merits of others. Only by keeping its unique character and joining the global exchange can a culture stay vigorous and truly enrich our shared world.
