In my view, university sports facilities should be opened to the public rather than kept behind closed gates. In the following paragraphs I will give my reasons.
To begin with, these facilities are usually built with public funding, yet they stand empty on weekends and holidays. Opening them turns a wasted resource into a shared benefit for taxpayers. What is more, many communities lack affordable places to exercise, so free access to a campus track or gym would clearly improve residents' health. Admittedly, some people worry about campus safety and extra costs. Nevertheless, these problems can be eased by fixed opening hours, an entry registration and a small fee.
To sum up, I firmly believe that universities should open their sports facilities to the public. It is advisable that they first set up proper management, so that both students and residents can enjoy the resource in harmony.
