Moderator:

Welcome to "Science World". Today we have Dr. Michael Hudson, Chief of the Department of Life Science in Boston University. It is estimated that over 99 percent of all species that ever existed have become extinct. What causes extinction?

Dr. Hudson:

Well, when a species is no longer adapted to a changed environment, it may perish. The exact causes of a species' death vary from situation to situation. Rapid ecological change may render an environment hostile to a species. For example, temperatures may change and a species may not be able to adapt. Food resources may be affected by environmental changes, which will then cause problems for a species requiring these resources. Other species may become better adapted to an environment, resulting in competition and, ultimately, in the death of a species.

The fossil record reveals that extinction has occurred throughout the history of Earth. Recent analyses have also revealed that on some occasions many species become extinct at the same time—a mass extinction. One of the best-known examples of mass extinction occurred 65 million years ago with the demise of dinosaurs and many other forms of life. Perhaps the largest mass extinction was the one that occurred 225 million years ago, when approximately 95 percent of all species died. Mass extinctions can be caused by a relatively rapid change in the environment and can be worsened by the close interrelationship of many species.

One interesting and controversial finding is that extinctions during the past 250 million years have tended to be more intense every 26 million years. This periodic extinction might be due to intersection of the Earth's orbit with a cloud of comets, but this theory is purely speculative. Some researchers have also speculated that extinction may be random. That is, certain species may be eliminated and others may survive for no particular reason. A species' survival may have nothing to do with its ability or inability to adapt. If so, some of evolutionary history may reflect a sequence of essentially random events.

4 个意群的对话骨架

按对话 的行文骨架切分意群,每个意群标注它覆盖的段落与对主旨的作用——逐段读完后回到这里俯瞰全篇,能看清作者为什么按这个顺序行文。

  1. 主持人开场引入灭绝话题

Moderator 以 welcoming 的方式 introduce 嘉宾 Dr. Hudson,然后用一个 striking statistic(99% species extinct)作为 hook 来 pose 核心 question:什么 causes extinction?这是典型的 talk show opening,用 eye-catching data 激发 audience interest。

    作为 dialogue 的 opening move,这个 sense group 通过 moderator 的 questioning 建立了整个 discussion 的 framework。Statistical fact(99% extinction)create 一种 urgency 和 significance,让后续 Dr. Hudson 的 explanation 显得 necessary 且 valuable。

    提出核心问题
  2. 专家解释灭绝的直接原因

Dr. Hudson 回应 moderator 的 question,系统地 explain immediate causes of extinction。他用 "when...may perish" structure 建立 causal framework,然后 elaborate 三个 specific mechanisms:temperature change、food resource problems、和 interspecies competition。这是 typical responsive explanation pattern。

这个 sense group 提供 theoretical foundation for understanding extinction。通过 present concrete mechanisms(temperature、resources、competition),Dr. Hudson establish 一个 explanatory framework,让 audience 理解 extinction 不是 random event 而是有 specific ecological causes 的 phenomenon。这为后续讨论 mass extinction 和 randomness theory 做好 conceptual preparation。

    阐述灭绝机制
  3. 专家论述大规模灭绝事件

Dr. Hudson shift focus 到 mass extinction,这是一个 qualitatively different phenomenon。他用 fossil record evidence 来 support, cite 两个 landmark cases:65 million years ago(dinosaurs)和 225 million years ago(95% species)。最后 explain mass extinction 的 causes(rapid environmental change + species interdependence),showing how it differs from individual extinction。

这个 sense group elevate discussion 从 theoretical mechanisms 到 historical reality。通过 present concrete examples with specific timeframes 和 percentages,Dr. Hudson make extinction concept more tangible 和 dramatic。The shift from "species death" to "mass extinction" also prepare audience for understanding that extinction 是一个 multi-scale phenomenon,为最后讨论 randomness theory 提供 empirical context。

    举证历史案例
  4. 专家探讨灭绝的周期性与随机性理论

Dr. Hudson introduce 两个 controversial theories about extinction patterns。首先 present periodic extinction hypothesis(every 26 million years),虽然 acknowledge 它是 speculative。然后 shift 到更 provocative idea:extinction 可能是 random, species survival 与 adaptation ability 无关。这 challenge conventional evolutionary thinking, showing extinction understanding 仍在 evolving。

这个 closing sense group add complexity 和 nuance 到 extinction discussion。通过 introduce competing theories(periodic vs. random),Dr. Hudson demonstrate that scientific understanding 不是 definitive,而是 ongoing inquiry。这 leave audience with thought-provoking questions,体现 academic discourse 的 open-ended nature,也 elevate 整个 dialogue 从 fact presentation 到 intellectual exploration。

MAIN IDEA ·

    将 moderator 的 question、expert 首段的 answer framework、后续段落的 examples 和 theories 整合起来,就能 construct 出 complete main idea:不仅回答了 what causes extinction,还涵盖了 historical patterns 和 theoretical perspectives

WORD INFERENCE · 生词推断

4 个生词的上下文推断

不查词典,只用文中线索推出词义——每个词给出推断出的释义与 完整推理链。已收录进英语六级高频真题词集的单词可点击进入词条页。

  • perish 死亡;灭绝

让我们把这些 clues 串联起来。首先,sentence structure 告诉我们 perish 是物种不适应 environment 的 result,这确立了 negative outcome 的 direction。然后,paragraph 的整体 topic 是 extinction,所有 supporting details 都围绕 species 的消亡展开。最关键的是,text 中反复出现 'death of a species' 这个 exact expression,与 perish 形成 synonym relationship。三条 clues converge 到同一个 conclusion:perish 表示物种的死亡或灭绝。

    句法-语义-复现三角定位
  • render 使变成;致使

综合这些 evidence:syntactic structure 显示 render 是 causative verb,导致 object 进入某种 state;following examples 反复展示 environmental transformation;negative context 确定 change 的 direction。所以 render 的 core meaning 是 '使变成某种状态',在这个 context 中特指使 environment 变得 hostile。

    使役动词结构例证语境法
  • demise 死亡;终结

让我们 synthesize 这些 clues:介词 'with' 建立了 demise 与 mass extinction 的 parallel relationship;关于 dinosaurs 的 common knowledge 提供了 factual anchor;paragraph structure 将 demise 置于 extinction discussion 的 framework 中。这三个 layers 的 evidence 都指向同一个 conclusion:demise 表示 death 或 extinction,特指 dinosaurs 的灭绝。

    名词关系知识结构三维法
  • speculative 推测性的;猜测的

整合这些 evidence:morphological analysis 确认 speculative 是 adjective;逻辑 connector 'but' 表明它对 theory 做出某种 qualification;词族 'speculated' 配合 'may be' 的 pattern 揭示核心 meaning 是 conjecture without solid proof。

What Why How Who When Where Which

仿写: 当你需要在 dialogue 中 introduce a complex topic 时,可以采用 rhetorical question 的方式。建议先 establish the context,然后用一个 clear and direct question 来 frame the discussion。仿写模版:"[Background information]. [Statistical data or fact]. What [core issue to be discussed]?" 例如:"Many students struggle with vocabulary. Research shows 80% forget new words within a week. What makes vocabulary retention so difficult?"

  • 重复

    P4 P5 P6

    在 第4段 中,"species" 出现了 5 次,"environment" 相关词汇出现了 3 次。在 第5段 中,"extinction" 及其变体出现了 6 次,"mass extinction" 作为 specific term 出现了 3 次。这种 deliberate repetition 在 scientific discourse 中 serves multiple purposes:它 establishes terminology consistency,帮助 readers/listeners familiarize themselves with key concepts,并通过 recurring patterns 来 emphasize the interconnectedness of ideas。特别是 "mass extinction" 的重复使用,将 discussion 从 general extinction 聚焦到 specific phenomenon,体现了 explanation 的层次性。

仿写: 在 explaining scientific concepts 时,要 strategically repeat core terminology。建议在 first mention 时 define the term,然后在 subsequent discussions 中 consistently use it。仿写模版:"[Core term] is [definition]. When [core term] [action/state], [consequence]. This [core term]-related [phenomenon] demonstrates [point]." 例如:"Adaptation is how species adjust to changes. When adaptation fails, extinction occurs. This adaptation-extinction relationship demonstrates nature's selective pressure."

  • 语气词

    P4 P6

Dr. Hudson 在 第4段 开头使用了 "Well" 作为 discourse marker 来 begin his response。这个 informal filler 使得 scientific explanation 显得不那么 rigid and formal,创造出一种 conversational atmosphere。它表明 speaker 正在 organize thoughts 并准备 deliver a thoughtful answer,给予 audience 一个 cognitive buffer。在 第6段 中,"That is" 作为 clarification marker 出现,用来 introduce further explanation,使 complex ideas 的表达更加 structured and accessible。

信号词 Well That is You see I mean In fact Actually So Now

仿写: 在 responding to questions in dialogue 时,可以用 discourse markers 来 create natural transitions。建议在 complex answers 前使用 "Well" 或 "You see";在 clarifying points 时使用 "That is" 或 "In other words"。仿写模版:"Well, [initial statement]. [Supporting detail]. That is, [clarification or rephrasing]." 例如:"Well, grammar rules have exceptions. Many irregular verbs don't follow standard patterns. That is, memorization becomes necessary alongside understanding patterns."

  • 省略

    P6

在 第6段 中,Dr. Hudson 使用了 elliptical structure "If so",这是 "If this is so" 的 abbreviated form。这种 ellipsis 使 sentence 更 concise 并加快了 discourse pace。它假设 listeners 能够 infer the complete meaning from context,体现了 efficient communication。类似地,在描述 "extinction may be random" 之后,subsequent explanation 使用了 省略主语的 structures,如 "certain species may be eliminated and others may survive",避免了 redundant repetition of "it is possible that" 或 "in this scenario"。

信号词 If so If not or not may or may not whether... or

仿写: 在 presenting contrasting scenarios 或 conditional statements 时,可以使用 ellipsis 来 avoid repetition。建议在 first statement 中 provide full structure,然后在 parallel structures 中 omit predictable elements。仿写模版:"[Condition]. If so, [consequence without repeating condition]. [Alternative]. If not, [different consequence]." 例如:"Practice improves skills. If so, regular study ensures progress. Sporadic effort yields limited results. If not, time investment would be meaningless."

IMPLIED MEANING · 言外之意

4 处话里有话

作者没有明说、但靠信号词传递出来的态度与暗示——每处给出原文片段、信号词类型与解读。

  • 灭绝原因的复杂性与不确定性

    P4
when a species is no longer adapted to a changed environment, it may perish... temperatures may change and a species may not be able to adapt... Food resources may be affected... Other species may become better adapted

情态词类 may might could can would perhaps possibly

    P5
Perhaps the largest mass extinction was the one that occurred 225 million years ago, when approximately 95 percent of all species died.

模糊限制语类 Perhaps the largest perhaps approximately about roughly around seemingly

在 第5段 中,'Perhaps the largest' 搭配 '95 percent of all species died' 这个 staggering figure,言外之意是这次 mass extinction 的 scale 是几乎 incomprehensible 的。用 perhaps 不是表达 doubt,而是一种 academic humility——即便有数据支持,仍保持 cautious tone。这服务于文章主旨中关于 mass extinctions throughout Earth's history 的论述,通过 highlighting 最极端的案例来说明 extinction 作为 natural phenomenon 的 dramatic impact,同时为后文讨论 periodic patterns 提供 baseline context。

  • 周期性灭绝理论的争议性

    P6
One interesting and controversial finding is that extinctions during the past 250 million years have tended to be more intense every 26 million years. This periodic extinction might be due to intersection of the Earth's orbit with a cloud of comets, but this theory is purely speculative.

评价性形容词类 interesting and controversial controversial debatable questionable disputed contentious interesting

在 第6段 开头,Hudson 用 interesting and controversial 标记 26-million-year periodicity 这个 finding,言外之意是这个 pattern 虽然 empirically observed 但 causally unexplained。紧接着 might be due to 和 purely speculative 进一步削弱 comet theory 的 credibility。这个 hedging cascade 传递的深层含义是 extinction science 仍有 major unknowns,呼应主旨中提到的 theories about periodic extinctions。作者通过 acknowledging controversy 来 maintain scientific integrity,同时为最后提出 random extinction hypothesis 做准备——既然 periodic explanations 都是 speculative,那 randomness 作为 alternative 就显得 equally plausible。

  • 物种生存的随机性假说

    P6
That is, certain species may be eliminated and others may survive for no particular reason. A species' survival may have nothing to do with its ability or inability to adapt.

否定性短语类 may have nothing to do with no particular reason not necessarily regardless of independent of unrelated to has little to do with

第6段 末尾的 'may have nothing to do with its ability or inability to adapt' 是全文最 provocative 的言外之意。它直接挑战了 第4段 建立的 adaptation-centered explanation,暗示 evolutionary success 可能不是基于 fitness 而是 luck。这个 randomness hypothesis 通过否定 adaptation 这个 fundamental biological principle,传递出 extinction science 面临的 epistemological challenge——我们观察到的 patterns 可能只是 random noise。这服务于主旨中 'possible randomness in species survival' 这个观点,展现了科学认知的 humility,承认某些 natural phenomena 可能 beyond our ability to explain through deterministic models。这也呼应开头的 99% extinction rate,暗示 survival 本身就是 statistical anomaly。
