After becoming president of Purdue University in 2013, Mitch Daniels asked the faculty to prove that their students have actually achieved one of higher education's most important goals: critical thinking skills. Two years before, a nationwide study of college graduates had shown that more than a third had made no significant gains in such mental abilities during their school years. Mr. Daniels needed to justify the high cost of attending Purdue to its students and their families. After all, the percentage of Americans who say a college degree is "very important" has fallen drastically in the last 5-6 years.

Purdue now has a pilot test to assess students' critical thinking skills. Yet like many college teachers around the U.S., the faculty remain doubtful that their work as educators can be measured by a "learning outcome" such as a graduate's ability to investigate and reason. However, the professors need not worry so much. The results of a recent experiment showed that professors can use standardized metrics to measure how well students do in three key areas: critical thinking, written communication, and quantitative literacy.

Despite the success of the experiment, the actual results are worrisome, and mostly confirm earlier studies. The organizers of the experiment concluded that far fewer students were achieving at high levels on critical thinking than they were doing for written communication or quantitative literacy. And that conclusion is based only on students nearing graduation.

American universities, despite their global reputation for excellence in teaching, have only begun to demonstrate what they can produce in real-world learning. Knowledge-based degrees are still important, but employers are demanding advanced thinking skills from college graduates. If the intellectual worth of a college degree can be accurately measured, more people will seek higher education—and come out better thinkers.

  1. P1

The Critical Thinking Crisis in Higher Education

Purdue University faces pressure to prove students' critical thinking gains amid nationwide evidence of weak outcomes and declining public confidence in college degrees' value.

文章主旨强调 American universities must demonstrate measurable learning outcomes,而这个段落 precisely explains why:因为有 concrete evidence of failure(nationwide study)和 external pressure(declining confidence, cost justification needs)。段落的 strategic value 在于它 creates a sense of urgency without immediately jumping to solutions,这为后续段落 discussing assessment methods and results 铺平了道路。同时,通过 highlighting critical thinking as the specific skill in question,段落 narrows down 整个 discourse 的 focus,让 readers 明白文章不是泛泛而谈 higher education 的所有问题,而是 specifically addressing this measurable outcome gap。

  2. P2

    Overcoming Assessment Skepticism with Evidence

Despite faculty skepticism about measuring educational outcomes, a pilot test at Purdue and experimental evidence prove that standardized assessment of critical thinking skills is feasible.

文章主旨说 universities must demonstrate measurable outcomes,第一段 explained why,而这个段落 demonstrates that such measurement is actually possible despite resistance。段落的 value 在于它 addresses 一个 potential objection before the reader even raises it:如果 educators themselves 不相信 assessment 的 validity,那么整个 proposition 就站不住脚。通过 presenting experimental evidence,段落 establishes the credibility of assessment methods,这为第三段 discussing actual disappointing results 做好了准备。Without this paragraph,第三段的 findings 可能会被 dismissed as methodological flaws;但有了这个 validation,第三段的 worrisome results 就不能被 attributed to bad measurement,而必须 confronted as real educational failures。

  3. P3

The Disturbing Reality of Assessment Results

While assessment methods prove valid, the actual results reveal a troubling pattern: students, even near graduation, significantly underperform in critical thinking compared to other skills.

文章主旨明确提到 'current results show students are underperforming in critical thinking',而这个段落 precisely delivers that evidence。 这种 convergence of evidence 让问题 undeniable。同时,段落为第四段的 call to action 创造了 necessity:如果结果 were good,就不需要 further reform;但因为结果 worrisome,第四段关于 improving outcomes 和 demonstrating value 的 discussion 就有了 justification。

  4. P4

The Path Forward: Measurement as Catalyst for Change

To maintain their reputation and meet employer demands for advanced thinking skills, American universities must accurately measure and demonstrate learning outcomes, which will restore public confidence and improve graduate quality.

文章主旨的两个 key components——'demonstrate measurable outcomes' 和 'need for improvement to meet employer demands'——都在这个段落得到 explicitly addressed。段落的 strategic brilliance 在于它 transforms 前面段落揭示的 problem(assessment shows poor critical thinking)into an opportunity:如果 universities 能 accurately measure and improve outcomes,他们不仅 solve the critical thinking problem,还能 restore declining public confidence(第一段的 issue)和 meet market demands(段落新引入的 pressure)。这种 multi-dimensional solution 让 conclusion 非常 strong and comprehensive。段落也 maintains 一个 balanced tone:既 acknowledges universities' existing strengths(global reputation),又 pushes for necessary change(demonstrate real-world learning),这种 balance 让 argument 更 persuasive 因为它 doesn't alienate the very institutions 需要 take action。

Mitch Daniels

Why did Mitch Daniels ask Purdue faculty to demonstrate their students' critical thinking achievements?

    • A He wanted to replace the university's existing degree programs with skills-based courses.
    • B He intended to prove that all Purdue graduates had gained substantial mental abilities.
    • C He needed to justify the value and high cost of a Purdue education to students and their families.
    • D He was responding to employers' demands for more quantitatively trained workers.
    • E He hoped to challenge the methodology of a nationwide study of college graduates.
    • F He sought to make Purdue the first university to offer a critical thinking test.

What did the recent experiment demonstrate about assessing college students?

    • A Faculty members generally reject the use of learning outcomes in higher education.
    • B Critical thinking is the only skill that universities can assess reliably.
    • C Pilot tests are more accurate than standardized metrics for judging graduates.
    • D Standardized metrics can measure student performance in critical thinking, written communication, and quantitative literacy.
    • E Students' written communication cannot be separated from quantitative literacy.
    • F Only graduating students should be evaluated through learning outcomes.

What worrisome finding emerged from the experiment's actual results?

    • A Students nearing graduation performed equally well in all three key areas.
    • B Critical thinking scores were higher than scores in written communication and quantitative literacy.
    • C Most college students showed no significant gains in any mental ability.
    • D The experiment failed to provide enough evidence about students close to graduation.
    • E Far fewer near-graduating students reached high levels of critical thinking than of written communication or quantitative literacy.
    • F Written communication was the weakest of the three abilities measured.

According to the passage, what may follow if the intellectual worth of a college degree is measured accurately?

    • A Employers will no longer demand advanced thinking skills from college graduates.
    • B Universities will stop offering knowledge-based degrees.
    • C All students will achieve high levels of critical thinking before graduation.
    • D The global reputation of American universities will be fully restored.
    • E Standardized metrics will become unnecessary in college education.
    • F More people will pursue higher education and emerge as better thinkers.

该项准确复现条件成立后的两个并列结果:more people will seek higher education,以及 come out better thinkers。 障碍在于 emerge as 是对 come out 的同义改写,pursue 是对 seek 的替换;考生需识别结尾预测中的自然 paraphrase。

作为 argumentative essay 的 opening,这个意群 establishes the problem context,通过 specific example(Purdue 校长的 concern)和 statistical evidence(三分之一学生无进步、public perception 下降)来 justify 为什么 universities must demonstrate measurable outcomes,为后文的 discussion 奠定 urgency 和 necessity

这个 sub-argument 呈现了 Purdue 的 pilot test 作为 response,同时 acknowledges faculty 的 skepticism about measuring education through learning outcomes,但通过 recent experiment 的 results 来 counter 这种 doubt,证明 standardized metrics 确实 can measure critical thinking, written communication, and quantitative literacy

这个意群 addresses 主旨中的 first claim(demonstrate measurable outcomes is possible),通过 present both sides(faculty concerns vs. experimental evidence)来 establish credibility,然后用 empirical support 来 validate 测量的 feasibility,为主旨的 assessment argument 提供 methodological foundation

这个 sub-argument 通过 sharp contrast("Despite the success" 后接 "worrisome")来 reveal 虽然 measurement 是 feasible 的,但 actual results 却 confirm earlier concerns:students 在 critical thinking 方面的 achievement levels 远低于 written communication 和 quantitative literacy,而且这还只是 nearing graduation 的 students

这个意群 supports 主旨的 second major claim(students underperforming in critical thinking),它通过 comparative analysis(三个 areas 的 performance gap)来 demonstrate the severity,使主旨中的 "need for improvement" 不是 abstract statement 而是有 concrete evidence 支撑的 urgent necessity

这个 conclusion 通过 acknowledge universities' global reputation 但用 "only begun to demonstrate" 来 emphasize 还有 gap to close,然后 highlights employer demands for advanced thinking skills,最后提出 conditional statement:如果 intellectual worth can be accurately measured,将会 drive more people to seek higher education and produce better thinkers,这是对全文的 forward-looking synthesis

这个 concluding unit 将主旨的所有 threads tie together:回应 "justify cost"(通过 accurate measurement),address "employer demands"(explicitly mentioned),并 project the benefits(more seekers, better thinkers)。它不是简单的 summary,而是用 if-then logic 来 propose a path forward,使主旨的 urgency 转化为 actionable vision

第四段明确提出 'must demonstrate'、'are demanding'、'will seek' 等表达,清晰地 articulate 了作者的 position:大学必须 demonstrate measurable learning outcomes 来 justify degree value,而且要 improve critical thinking 以 meet employer demands。

通过串联各段的 key points,我们得到:问题是 critical thinking underperformance 和 degree value questioned,评估显示 assessment is possible but results are poor,结论是 must demonstrate outcomes and improve。

主旨信号词 must demonstrate P4 justify P1 worrisome P3 demanding P4 However P2 far fewer P3

MAIN IDEA ·

American universities must demonstrate measurable learning outcomes, particularly in critical thinking skills, to justify the high cost and value of college degrees. While standardized assessment is possible, current results show students are underperforming in critical thinking, highlighting the need for improvement to meet employer demands.
WORD INFERENCE ·

信号词 study research survey experiment investigation data shows statistics indicate according to evidence suggests findings reveal

比如你要论证「学生缺乏实践能力」,可以写:「According to a 2022 employer survey, nearly 40% of recent graduates lack practical problem-solving skills needed in the workplace.」

通过这个 comparison,作者 highlight 了 critical thinking 这个 specific area 的 weakness,强化了文章主旨中关于「students are underperforming in critical thinking」的 concern。

信号词 far fewer while however in contrast whereas on the other hand compared to unlike rather than but yet

比如:「While students excel in memorizing formulas, they struggle significantly with applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.」关键词如「while」「however」「in contrast」「whereas」可以 create clear opposition,让 problematic area 更加 prominent。

在 第1段,作者指出因为「美国人认为大学学位 very important 的比例 drastically fallen」,所以 Daniels 需要 justify the high cost。在 第4段,作者论证如果「intellectual worth can be accurately measured」,那么「more people will seek higher education」。这些 cause-and-effect relationships 构建了文章的 logical chain, support 了「universities must demonstrate measurable outcomes」这个 central thesis。

After all because since as a result therefore thus consequently if...then lead to result in due to given that

比如要论证「提高批判性思维的重要性」,可以写:「If universities fail to cultivate critical thinking skills, graduates will struggle to meet the complex demands of modern workplaces, ultimately undermining the value proposition of higher education.」使用「if...then」「because」「as a result」等 causal markers 来 make the logical flow explicit and convincing。

    P1 P3

文章开头直接 reference Mitch Daniels 和他的 request to faculty,以及第三段引用「The organizers of the experiment concluded」。 通过引用 Purdue president 的 initiative 和 experiment organizers 的 conclusions,作者 ground 了自己的 argument in real institutional actions 和 research findings,让讨论不是 abstract theorizing 而是 based on actual educational practices。

信号词 asked stated concluded emphasized argued noted according to as X pointed out X claims that research shows experts suggest

仿写: 运用引用论证时,要 identify relevant authorities 和 their actions or statements。 例如:「As Harvard's Dean of Education recently emphasized, 'Assessment alone cannot capture the full complexity of learning, but it remains essential for accountability.'」关键是选择 credible sources 并 integrate 它们 smoothly into your argument flow,让引用 serve 你的 thesis 而不是 overshadow it。

    P2

第二段呈现了一个 contrast between faculty's doubts 和 recent experiment results。作者先提到「faculty remain doubtful」about measuring education outcomes,然后用「However」引出「the professors need not worry so much」,因为 experiment showed assessment is possible。

However Yet Nevertheless Nonetheless On the contrary Still Even so Despite this In spite of Although

例如:「Many educators worry that standardized tests cannot capture creative thinking. However, recent innovations in assessment design show that creativity can indeed be measured through portfolio reviews and open-ended challenges.」关键是用「however」「yet」「nonetheless」等 adversative connectors 来 create the pivot,同时确保 second part 有 solid evidence 来 substantiate the rebuttal。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
more than a third had made no significant gains in such mental abilities during their school years

否定词组 no significant gains no improvement little progress hardly any advancement not substantial barely increased failed to improve

表面说 'no significant gains',实际传递的是 higher education is failing 这个严重问题,超过三分之一的学生在 critical thinking 上没进步,证明 current education system 存在 fundamental flaws,这为文章主旨中 'universities must demonstrate measurable outcomes' 提供了 compelling rationale,也解释了为什么需要 justify high costs。

    P1
the percentage of Americans who say a college degree is 'very important' has fallen drastically in the last 5-6 years

强化副词 fallen drastically dropped dramatically declined sharply plummeted significantly decreased substantially reduced markedly deteriorated severely

'Fallen drastically' 表面是数据描述,实际传递 public trust in higher education is collapsing 的危机感,这种 dramatic decline 暗示如果不采取行动,universities 将面临 legitimacy crisis,直接呼应文章主旨中 'justify high cost' 的迫切性,也为后文提出 standardized assessment 的必要性 pave the way。

    P2
the faculty remain doubtful that their work as educators can be measured by a 'learning outcome'

情态词组 remain doubtful stay skeptical continue to question still uncertain persist in doubting maintain reservations harbor concerns

Faculty 的 'doubtful' 表面是 neutral report,实际暗示 assessment reform 面临 internal resistance,但紧接着的 'need not worry' 和实验成功表明 author 认为这种 doubt 是 unfounded,这种先抑后扬的结构强化了文章主旨中 'standardized metrics are possible' 的论证,也暗示 despite resistance,改革是 necessary and viable 的。

    P3
Despite the success of the experiment, the actual results are worrisome

Despite the success Although it worked Even with progress Notwithstanding improvements In spite of achievements While effective Though promising

    P3
far fewer students were achieving at high levels on critical thinking than they were doing for written communication or quantitative literacy

对比强化词 far fewer much less significantly lower considerably behind markedly inferior substantially weaker noticeably worse

    P4
American universities, despite their global reputation for excellence in teaching, have only begun to demonstrate what they can produce in real-world learning

模糊限制语 only begun to just started to barely commenced merely initiated scarcely embarked hardly started recently begun

'Only begun' 表面说有开始行动,实际强调 universities' efforts 远远不够,尽管有 global reputation,但在 demonstrating outcomes 方面仍处于 early stage,这暗示 significant room for improvement,直接支持文章主旨中 'must demonstrate measurable outcomes' 的 urgent call,也为最后一句 'more people will seek higher education' 的 conditional statement 提供 logical premise。

    P4
Knowledge-based degrees are still important, but employers are demanding advanced thinking skills from college graduates

转折对比类 still important, but remain valuable, yet continue to matter, however stay relevant, though persist, but endure, nevertheless hold value, albeit

'Still important, but' 表面保留 knowledge-based degrees 的价值,实际暗示 thinking skills 已成为 new priority,这种 paradigm shift 解释了为什么 critical thinking assessment 如此重要,直接呼应文章主旨中 'employers demanding advanced thinking skills',也暗示 traditional education model 需要 evolve 以 meet new demands,为整篇论证提供 economic rationale。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为消极批判( concerned about current failures but cautiously hopeful for improvement)。

如果用 'however', 'yet', 'but' 这些 adversative conjunctions 转折连词后 reassure 再次保证或 refute 反驳,说明作者的 true position 真实立场在 the turn 转折之后。

Conclusion 结论段是 author's final word 作者的最后发言,也是他们 most explicitly state 最明确陈述 their stance 立场的地方。

文章的 dominant tone 主导基调由 the bulk of content 主要内容决定。如果 majority of paragraphs 大部分段落 focus on problems and failures 聚焦于问题和失败('made no significant gains', 'worrisome', 'far fewer students achieving'),即使 ending offers hope 结尾提供希望,整体态度仍是 critical with cautious optimism 批判性的带谨慎乐观,而不是 predominantly supportive 主要支持性的。

  • made no significant gains P1

这个 negative outcome phrase 消极结果短语直接 point out 指出高等教育的 failure 失败:超过三分之一的学生在 mental abilities 思维能力上 'made no significant gains' 没有显著提升。

同类词 showed no improvement failed to progress demonstrated no advancement exhibited no development achieved no meaningful progress

  • need not worry so much P2

同类词 should not be concerned no cause for alarm needn't be anxious don't have to fret can rest assured

  • worrisome P3

即使出现在 'despite the success' 尽管成功之后,这个词的 weight 分量和 the phrase structure 短语结构('the actual results are worrisome')clearly show 清楚显示作者的 primary concern 主要关切是 negative results 消极结果,not the experimental success 而不是实验成功。

同类词 concerning troubling alarming disturbing problematic

  • far fewer P3

同类词 significantly fewer considerably less much lower substantially reduced markedly insufficient

  • if...can be...will P4

这个 conditional structure 条件结构表示 future hope is contingent 未来希望是有条件的 on certain requirements being met 某些要求得到满足(accurate measurement)。作者不是 asserting certainty 断言确定性,而是 proposing a possibility 提出可能性,reflecting 反映 cautious optimism 谨慎乐观 rather than confidence 而不是信心 in current state 对当前状态。

    同类词 if...can...will provided that...may should...then when...will be able to once...could

第3段 继续 present evidence('Despite the success') 但同时 reveal concerns('worrisome results')。这种 back-and-forth 的 reasoning pattern 是 argumentation 的 hallmark,说明文不会 engage with opposing views,新闻报道不会 take sides 或 evaluate evidence 来 build an argument。

第4段 用 'despite their global reputation' 来 contrast current state with potential,然后 shift to what employers demand 和 what should happen('If...more people will seek')。这个 conditional statement 配合 'will seek' 和 'come out better' 表明作者在 projecting a desired outcome 和 implicitly arguing for change。说明文的 ending 会 summarize information,新闻的 ending 会 provide final details 或 quotes,但议论文的 ending 会 push readers toward a conclusion 或 action。

这篇文章从 第1段 establish problem,到 第2段-3 present evidence and address counterarguments,再到 第4段 advocate for measurable outcomes,整个 structure 都在 building an argument: universities should demonstrate learning outcomes through measurable critical thinking skills。这不是 explaining how something works(说明文的 purpose),也不是 reporting what happened(新闻的 purpose),而是 arguing what should be done(议论文的 purpose)。
