Why More Farmers Are Making The Switch to Grass-Fed Meat and Dairy

Though he didn't come from a farming family, from a young age Tim Joseph was fascinated by the idea of living off the land. Reading magazines like The Stockman Grass Farmer and Graze, he got hooked on the idea of grass-fed agriculture. The idea that all energy and wealth comes from the sun really intrigued him. He thought the shorter the distance between the sun and the end product, the higher the profit to the farmer.

Joseph wanted to put this theory to the test. In 2009, he and his wife Laura launched Maple Hill Creamery, an organic, all grass-fed yogurt company in northern New York. He quickly learned what the market has demonstrated: Demand for grass-fed products currently exceeds supply. Grass-fed beef is enjoying a 25-30% annual growth rate. Sales of grass-fed yogurt and kefir, on the other hand, have in the last year increased by over 38%. This is in comparison with a drop of just under 1% in the total yogurt and kefir market, according to natural and organic market research company SPINS. Joseph's top priority became getting his hands on enough grass-fed milk to keep customers satisfied, since his own 64-cow herd wasn't going to suffice.

His first partnership was with Paul and Phyllis Amburgh, owners of the Dharma Lea farm in New York. The Amburghs, too, were true believers in grass-fed. In addition to supplying milk from their own 85-head herd, they began to help other farmers in the area convert from conventional to certified organic and grass-fed in order to enter the Maple Hill supply chain. Since 2010, the couple has helped 125 small dairy farms convert to grass-fed, with more than 80% of those farms coming on board during the last two years.

All this conversion has helped Maple Hill grow 40-50% every year since it began, with no end in sight. Joseph has learned that a farmer has to have a certain mindset to successfully convert. But convincing open-minded dairy people is actually not that hard, when you look at the economics. Grass-fed milk can fetch up 2.5 times the price of conventional milk. Another factor is the squeeze that conventional dairy farmers have felt as the price of grain they feed their cows has gone up, tightening their profit margins. By replacing expensive grain feed with regenerative management practices, grass-fed farmers are insulated from jumps in the price of feed. These practices include grazing animals on grasses grown from the pastureland's natural seed bank, and fertilized by the cows' own fertilizer.

Champions of this type of regenerative grazing also point to its animal welfare, climate and health benefits: Grass-fed animals live longer out of confinement. Grazing herds stimulate microbial activity in the soil, helping to capture water and separate carbon. And grass-fed dairy and meat have been shown to be higher in certain nutrients and healthy fats.

In the grass fed system, farmers are also not subject to the wildly fluctuating milk prices of the international commodity market. The unpredictability of global demand and the lag-time it takes to add more cows to a herd to meet demand can result in events like the recent cheese surplus. Going grass-fed is a safe refuge, a way for family-scale farms to stay viable. Usually a farmer will get to the point where financially, what they're doing is not working. That's when they call Maple Hill. If the farm is well managed and has enough land, and the desire to convert is sincere, a relationship can begin. Through regular regional educational meetings, a large annual meeting, individual farm visits and thousands of phone calls, the Amburghs pass on the principles of pasture management. Maple Hill signs a contract pledging to buy the farmer's milk at a guaranteed base price, plus quality premiums and incentives for higher protein, butter-fat and other solids.

While Maple Hill's conversion program is unusually hands-on and comprehensive, it's just one of a growing number of businesses committed to slowly changing the way America farms. Joseph calls sharing his knowledge network through peer-to-peer learning a core piece of the company's culture. Last summer, Massachusetts grass-fed beef advocate John Smith launched Big Picture Beef, a network of small grass-fed beef farms in New England and New York that is projected to bring to market 2,500 head of cattle from 125 producers this year. Early indications are that Smith will have no shortage of farm members. Since he began to informally announce the network at farming conferences and on social media, he's received a steady stream of inquiries from interested farmers.

Shinn says he'll provide services ranging from formal seminars to on-farm workshops on holistic management, to one-on-one hand-holding and an almost 24/7 phone hotline for farmers who are converting. In exchange, he guarantees an above-market price for each animal and a calf-to-customer electronic ear tag ID system like that used in the European Union.

Though advocates portray grass fed products as a win-win situation for all, they do have downsides. Price, for one, is an issue. Joseph says his products are priced 10-20% above organic versions, but depending on the product chosen, compared to non-organic conventional yogurt, consumers could pay a premium of 30-50% or more for grass-fed. As for the meat, Smith says his grass-fed hamburger will be priced 20-25% over the conventional alternative. But a look at the prices on online grocer Fresh Direct suggests a grass-fed premium of anywhere from 35-60%.

And not every farmer has the option of going grass-fed. For both beef and dairy production it requires, at least in the beginning, more pastureland. Grass-fed beef production tends to be more labor-intensive as well. But Smith counters that if you factor in the hidden cost of government corn subsidies, environment degradation, and decreased human health and animal welfare, grass-fed is the more cost-effective model. "The sun provides the lowest cost of production and the cheapest meat," he says.

Another grass-fed booster spurring farmers to convert is EPIC, which makes meat-based protein bars. Founders Taylor Collins and his wife, Katie Forrest, used to be endurance athletes; now they're advocates of grass-fed meat. Soon after launching EPIC's most successful product—the Bison Bacon Cranberry Bar—Collins and Forrest found they'd exhausted their sources for bison raised exclusively on pasture. When they started researching the supply chain, they learned that only 2-3% of all bison is actually grass-fed. The rest is feed-lot confined and fed grain and corn.

But after General Mills bought EPIC in 2016, Collins and Forrest suddenly had the resources they needed to expand their supply chain. So the company teamed up with Wisconsin-based rancher Northstar Bison. EPIC fronted the money for the purchase of $2.5 million worth of young bison that will be raised according to its grass-fed protocols, with a guaranteed purchase price. The message to young people who might not otherwise be able to afford to break into the business is, "'You can purchase this $3 million piece of land here, because I'm guaranteeing you today you'll have 1,000 bison on it.' We're bringing new blood into the old, conventional farming ecosystem, which is really cool to see," Collins explains.

Tim Joseph; attracted; grass-fed agriculture

What particularly attracted Tim Joseph to grass-fed agriculture?

    • A He wanted to inherit a large and established family farm.
    • B He expected grass-fed yogurt to replace all conventional dairy products.
    • C He believed that shortening the path from the sun to the final product could raise farmers' profits.
    • D He was mainly impressed by the international market for milk.
    • E He hoped to avoid the labor involved in managing pastureland.
    • F He was persuaded by claims that grass-fed food contains more nutrients.

该项完整保留了原文的逻辑:all energy and wealth comes from the sun,且 shorter distance 对应 higher profit。

Maple Hill Creamery; after its launch; problem

What problem did Maple Hill Creamery face after its launch?

    • A Consumers showed little interest in grass-fed yogurt and kefir.
    • B The total yogurt market was expanding too rapidly for the company to enter.
    • C Its milk failed to qualify as organic.
    • D Its own herd could not provide enough grass-fed milk to meet customer demand.
    • E It could not find enough buyers for its 64-cow herd's milk.
    • F Grain prices made it impossible to produce yogurt.

该项把 demand exceeds supply 与 64-cow herd wasn't going to suffice 合并为完整因果。

Paul and Phyllis Amburgh; supply network

How did Paul and Phyllis Amburgh expand Maple Hill's supply network?

    • A They sold their 85-head herd to Maple Hill.
    • B They trained farmers to rely more heavily on grain feed.
    • C They purchased 125 small dairy farms in New York.
    • D They created a national chain of yogurt stores.
    • E They helped nearby conventional dairy farms convert to certified organic and grass-fed production.
    • F They lowered the retail price of grass-fed milk.

该项准确概括 help other farmers convert from conventional to certified organic and grass-fed。nearby 对应 in the area,且转型后的农场可进入 supply chain。

Why are grass-fed farmers less vulnerable to rising feed costs?

    • A They receive a fixed international price for grain.
    • B They can charge 2.5 times more for every dairy product.
    • C Their cows need no fertilizer or pastureland.
    • D They import cheaper grain whenever prices rise.
    • E They reduce customer demand for milk.
    • F They replace costly grain feed with regenerative pasture-management practices.

该项直接对应 by replacing expensive grain feed with regenerative management practices。

According to advocates, how can grazing herds benefit the environment?

    • A They stimulate soil microbes, helping the soil capture water and separate carbon.
    • B They eliminate the need for any water on pastureland.
    • C They keep animals confined for longer periods.
    • D They guarantee that all dairy products contain more protein.
    • E They lower the international price of milk.
    • F They replace organic certification requirements.

该项完整保留 grazing herds → microbial activity → capture water and separate carbon 的环境机制。

Maple Hill; promise; join its program

What does Maple Hill promise farmers who join its program?

    • A It guarantees to buy every farm's land and livestock.
    • B It pledges to buy their milk at a guaranteed base price, with additional quality incentives.
    • C It offers farmers a fixed price for grain feed.
    • D It requires farmers to add cows immediately to meet global demand.
    • E It gives farmers ownership of Maple Hill's yogurt brand.
    • F It exempts farmers from maintaining high milk quality.

Big Picture Beef; participating farms; suggests

What suggests that Big Picture Beef can attract enough participating farms?

    • A The network has already brought 2,500 cattle to market.
    • B Maple Hill has agreed to purchase all of the network's beef.
    • C Smith has received a steady stream of inquiries from interested farmers.
    • D Conventional farms are legally required to join the network.
    • E Smith has eliminated the need for social media promotion.
    • F All 125 producers have signed long-term contracts.

该项直接给出 early indications 的依据:steady stream of inquiries。

Shinn; farmers; conversion program

What does Shinn offer farmers who participate in the conversion program?

    • A He promises to provide free pastureland to every farmer.
    • B He guarantees that farmers will never need one-on-one assistance.
    • C He pays farmers only after their meat is sold to consumers.
    • D He guarantees an above-market price for each animal and provides an electronic ID system.
    • E He requires farmers to adopt the European Union's pricing rules.
    • F He replaces on-farm workshops with a phone hotline.

    该项完整对应 guarantees an above-market price 和 calf-to-customer electronic ear tag ID system。

  9. 第 9 段 定位词 grass-fed yogurt; non-organic conventional yogurt; consumers pay

How much more may consumers pay for grass-fed yogurt than for non-organic conventional yogurt?

    • A 10-20% more.
    • B 20-25% more.
    • C Less than 1% more.
    • D Exactly 35-60% more.
    • E They may pay a premium of 30-50% or more.
    • F No more, because grass-fed yogurt is priced the same as conventional yogurt.

该项严格对应 compared to non-organic conventional yogurt, consumers could pay a premium of 30-50% or more。

  10. 第 10 段 定位词 not feasible for every farmer; grass-fed

Why is going grass-fed not feasible for every farmer?

    • A It is prohibited by government corn subsidies.
    • B Grass-fed animals cannot use sunlight as an energy source.
    • C Consumers refuse to buy grass-fed meat.
    • D It always produces more environmental damage than conventional farming.
    • E Farmers must first obtain a European Union ear tag.
    • F It initially requires more pastureland and can be more labor-intensive.

该项并列复现 two barriers:more pastureland 和 more labor-intensive。initially 对应 at least in the beginning, can be 对应 tends to be,保留了原文的限定性。

EPIC; bison supply chain; discovered

What did EPIC discover when it investigated its bison supply chain?

    • A Only 2-3% of all bison were raised exclusively on pasture.
    • B Most bison were raised exclusively on pasture.
    • C Its Bison Bacon Cranberry Bar had no market demand.
    • D All feed-lot bison were certified organic and grass-fed.
    • E Bison farming was limited to endurance athletes.
    • F Grass-fed bison were more common than grass-fed cattle.

该项准确保留 only 2-3% 和 raised exclusively on pasture 两个关键限定。

EPIC; Northstar Bison; expand grass-fed production

How did EPIC help Northstar Bison expand grass-fed production?

    • A It sold Northstar Bison to General Mills in 2016.
    • B It advanced funds to buy young bison and guaranteed a purchase price for them.
    • C It required Northstar Bison to feed the animals grain and corn.
    • D It donated 2.5 million acres of land to new ranchers.
    • E It guaranteed that every new rancher would own 1,000 bison.
    • F It replaced Northstar Bison's ranchers with electronic ear tags.

该项将 fronted the money for the purchase 与 guaranteed purchase price 两项核心安排合并,准确呈现“资金 + 销路保障”的机制。

这个 opening paragraph 通过 Tim Joseph 的个人 story 来 introduce grass-fed agriculture 的 concept,他被 the idea 吸引是因为相信 energy 和 wealth 都来自 sun,而且 the shorter the distance between sun and end product 就能带来 higher profit

新闻报道的 lead paragraph 通常会 establish the human interest angle,这里通过 Joseph 的 fascination 和 theory 来 set up 整篇文章关于 grass-fed farming conversion 的 narrative,为后续 explain 为什么 farmers are making the switch 提供了一个 personal entry point

Joseph 在 2009 established Maple Hill Creamery 来 test his theory,结果 quickly discovered 市场上的 demand for grass-fed products 远超 supply,用具体的 growth rate data 来 demonstrate:grass-fed beef 有 25-30% annual growth 而 yogurt and kefir 增长超过 38%,这让他的 top priority 变成 securing enough grass-fed milk

这个 sense group 在新闻报道中 serves as the problem statement,通过 concrete statistics 来 establish 为什么 conversion is happening,它 validates 开头的 theory 同时 introduces the central tension:growing demand 驱动了后续所有的 conversion efforts

为了 solve the supply shortage,Joseph 的 first partnership 是和 Dharma Lea farm 的 Amburghs,他们不仅 supply milk from their own herd 还 began helping other farmers convert to organic and grass-fed,since 2010 这对 couple 已经 helped 125 small dairy farms 完成 conversion,其中 80% 是在最近 two years 加入的

新闻报道在 present solutions 时常用 case study approach,这个 sense group 通过 introduce key partners 来 illustrate how the conversion network actually operates,Amburghs 的 role 显示这不只是 one company 的 effort 而是 collaborative ecosystem

这部分 explains why conversion makes economic sense,Maple Hill 每年 grow 40-50% 而 Joseph learned 农民需要 certain mindset 但 convincing them isn't hard when you look at economics:grass-fed milk 可以 fetch up to 2.5 times the price,加上 conventional dairy farmers 面临 grain price 上涨的 squeeze,通过 replacing expensive grain 用 regenerative practices 就能避免 feed price jumps

新闻报道在 explain trends 时必须 address motivations,这个 sense group 提供了 economic rationale 来 answer 读者心中的 why question,通过 price comparisons 和 cost analysis 来 make the conversion story credible and relatable

Champions of regenerative grazing 还 point to 除了 economics 之外的 benefits:在 animal welfare 方面 grass-fed animals live longer out of confinement,在 climate 方面 grazing herds stimulate microbial activity 帮助 capture water and sequester carbon,在 health 方面 grass-fed products 被证明 higher in certain nutrients and healthy fats

这个 brief sense group 在新闻报道中 functions as supporting evidence,它 broadens the argument beyond pure economics 来 show that conversion 不仅 financially sound 而且 ethically and environmentally beneficial,这种 multi-dimensional justification 增强了 story 的 persuasiveness

  6. Maple Hill

这部分 details how the system actually works,在 grass-fed system 里 farmers 不受 international commodity market 的 price fluctuations 影响,going grass-fed 是 family-scale farms 保持 viable 的 safe refuge,当 farmers 发现 what they're doing financially isn't working 就会 call Maple Hill,如果 farm is well managed 且有 sincere desire,就能 begin a relationship,Amburghs 通过 educational meetings 和 farm visits 来 pass on pasture management principles,而 Maple Hill signs contracts 保证 base price plus premiums

新闻报道在 explain complex processes 时需要 provide concrete operational details,这个 sense group 把前面提到的 conversion support 具体化,showing exactly how Maple Hill facilitates the switch,这种 granular description 让 abstract concept 变得 tangible and actionable

虽然 Maple Hill's program is unusually comprehensive,但它只是 a growing number of businesses 中的一个,Joseph 认为 peer-to-peer learning 是 company culture 的 core piece,去年 Massachusetts 的 John Smith launched Big Picture Beef,一个 network of small grass-fed beef farms 预计今年会 bring to market 2,500 head of cattle from 125 producers, early indications 显示 Smith will have no shortage of farm members

这个 sense group 在新闻写作中 serves to show that the phenomenon is not isolated,通过 introduce another similar initiative 来 demonstrate 这是 industry-wide trend,这种 pattern replication 增强了 story 的 significance and newsworthiness

  8. Big Picture Beef

Shinn 会 provide services ranging from formal seminars to on-farm workshops on holistic management,还有 one-on-one hand-holding 和 almost 24/7 phone hotline for converting farmers,in exchange 他 guarantees an above-market price for each animal 和 a calf-to-customer electronic ear tag ID system like European Union 使用的那种

这个 short sense group 在新闻报道中 functions as parallel detail,它 shows that while the goal is same, different companies 采用 slightly different approaches,这种 variation within theme 让 coverage 更 comprehensive and nuanced

虽然 advocates portray grass-fed as win-win,但它 does have downsides, price 是主要 issue,Joseph 说他的 products priced 10-20% above organic versions,但 compared to non-organic conventional yogurt, consumers 可能要付 30-50% or more premium,对于 meat,Smith 的 grass-fed hamburger 会比 conventional 贵 20-25%,但 Fresh Direct 的价格显示 premium 实际是 35-60%

平衡报道需要 present counterarguments,这个 sense group introduces the challenges 和 limitations,通过 concrete price comparisons 来 acknowledge that conversion 不是 without costs,这种 balanced perspective 增强了 journalistic credibility

并非 every farmer has the option of going grass-fed,对于 beef and dairy production 它 requires more pastureland at least in the beginning,grass-fed beef production tends to be more labor-intensive,但 Smith counters 如果 factor in hidden costs like government corn subsidies, environmental degradation, and decreased health and animal welfare,grass-fed 其实是 more cost-effective model,因为 sun provides lowest cost of production

这个 sense group 在新闻报道中 continues the balanced assessment,它 acknowledges practical barriers 但同时 provides counter-argument,这种 thesis-antithesis structure 让读者 see both sides 并 form informed opinions

Another grass-fed booster 是 EPIC,它 makes meat-based protein bars, founders Taylor Collins and Katie Forrest 曾是 endurance athletes 现在是 grass-fed meat advocates,在 launching 最成功的 product Bison Bacon Cranberry Bar 后不久,他们 found they'd exhausted their sources for pasture-raised bison,研究 supply chain 后发现 only 2-3% of all bison 是真正 grass-fed,其余都是 feed-lot confined 喂 grain and corn

新闻报道用 multiple examples 来 demonstrate pattern,这个 sense group introduces a third company 来 show that conversion support 来自 different types of businesses,EPIC as a product company 而不是 farm or dairy 显示 movement 的 breadth

在 General Mills bought EPIC in 2016 后,Collins and Forrest suddenly had the resources 来 expand their supply chain,所以公司 teamed up with Wisconsin-based Northstar Bison,EPIC fronted the money for purchase of $2.5 million worth of young bison 按照 grass-fed protocols 饲养,with guaranteed purchase price,给 young people 的 message 是即使 otherwise couldn't afford to break into business 也可以,因为有 guaranteed market,Collins 说这是 bringing new blood into old conventional farming ecosystem

这个 closing sense group 在新闻报道中 provides a forward-looking conclusion,它 shows how corporate acquisition 可以 accelerate the movement,而且 highlights generational change aspect,给 story 一个 hopeful and dynamic ending

新闻报道的 headline 通常直接点明 central theme,而 lead paragraph 会展开说明 who、what、why。

第二段密集出现 '25-30% annual growth'、'increased by over 38%' 等 statistics,配合 'demand exceeds supply' 这类 market signal,直接证明 grass-fed 不是 niche phenomenon 而是 significant movement

这些不是 isolated facts,而是解释 'why farmers are switching' 的 causal chain。从 helping farmers convert 到 price premiums(2.5倍)到 insulation from feed cost,构成完整的 motivation framework

第九、十段提出 downsides(higher prices、land requirements、labor intensity),但这些 challenges 的存在本身证明 trend 足够 significant to warrant discussion。作者提到 obstacles 但紧接着给出 counter-arguments('hidden costs'、'lowest cost of production'),显示 overall narrative 仍然支持 conversion

这个 architecture 清晰支持 'growing demand driving conversion with institutional support' 这一 core message

结合 in- prefix 的 inward direction,我们可以推断 intrigued 表示某种深层的 intellectual or emotional attraction。

Joseph 的 priority 是 get enough milk,但自己的 herd wasn't going to suffice,所以他 sought partnerships。

Farmers 面临 financial struggles ('not working'),而 grass-fed 是让他们 'stay viable' 的 solution。这个 contrast 说明 viable 是 financially sustainable 的 state。

两处用法一致:premium 都是 extra cost beyond the standard。

Animals 'out of confinement' 和 grazing freely 相对,说明 confinement 是某种 restriction。

这种 personal narrative 让抽象的 agricultural concept 变得 concrete and relatable。通过描述他 reading magazines 和被 the idea that energy comes from the sun 所 fascinate,作者建立了一个 protagonist,让读者能够 empathize with 这场farming transformation 的 human dimension。这种 approach 为后续的 market data 和 business expansion 提供了 emotional foundation,让整篇 article 不只是 dry facts,而是关于 real people pursuing a vision 的 story。

信号词 from a young age initially it all started when early on in the beginning his/her journey began growing up back then

使用 sensory details like 'reading magazines' 或 'fascinated by the idea' 来 create vivid imagery。 Though [background], from [time period] [protagonist] was [emotional verb] by [concept]. [Action verb] [sources], he/she got hooked on [core idea]. The idea that [principle] really intrigued him/her.'

    P2 P4 P9

第二段密集使用 specific numbers:'25-30% annual growth rate', 'over 38% increase', 'drop of just under 1%'。这些 quantitative evidence 直接 support 文章 main thesis about growing demand。 数据的 contrast(38% growth vs 1% drop)particularly effective in highlighting the magnitude of change。

信号词 according to data shows statistics indicate research reveals studies suggest figures demonstrate reports show surveys find evidence suggests

Always include source attribution ('according to [organization]')。使用 comparative structures 来 highlight significance:'X is enjoying Y% growth, while Z experienced only W% change'。 [Product/sector] is enjoying a [percentage] annual growth rate. Sales of [specific item] have in the last [time period] increased by over [percentage]. This is in comparison with [contrasting data], according to [source].'

    P3 P6 P7 P8 P11 P12

第三段使用 factual, neutral language 描述 Amburghs 的 partnership:'owners of Dharma Lea farm', 'true believers', 'helped 125 small dairy farms convert'。这种 straightforward reporting style 让 information flow naturally without apparent bias。通过 presenting concrete actions ('began to help', 'convert to certified organic') 和 specific numbers ('85-head herd', '80% of farms'),作者 maintain journalistic objectivity while building the narrative of a growing movement。这种 descriptive approach 让 readers form their own judgments based on facts。

信号词 owners of began to helped since has/have [past participle] in addition to in order to during with

仿写: Focus on observable actions 和 measurable outcomes。Avoid loaded adjectives;用 factual details 代替 evaluative language。Structure sentences around concrete subjects performing specific actions。 [Name/entity], [descriptive role], [past tense action verb] [specific outcome]. Since [time], [subject] has [action verb] [number] [entities] [infinitive purpose], with [percentage/number] of [group] [participial phrase] during [time period].'

    P4 P5 P9 P10

第四段通过 economic comparison 来 highlight grass-fed advantages:'fetch up 2.5 times the price' versus conventional milk,'regenerative management practices' versus 'expensive grain feed'。这种 juxtaposition 不仅 illustrates financial benefits,还 establishes a clear rationale for conversion。通过 contrasting rising grain costs with stable pasture-based systems,作者 construct a compelling economic argument。这种 technique 让 abstract concept of 'mindset change' become concrete through tangible price differentials 和 profit margin comparisons。

信号词 another factor in contrast while whereas on the other hand by replacing instead of unlike compared to versus

仿写: Identify two opposing elements 并 structure sentences to emphasize their differences。使用 comparative structures ('X times the price', 'higher than', 'in contrast to')。Include transitional phrases like 'another factor is' 或 'by replacing X with Y'。 [Item A] can fetch up [multiplier] times the price of [Item B]. Another factor is [contrasting situation] that [group] have felt as [negative condition], tightening their [outcome]. By replacing [expensive/old method] with [new method], [group] are insulated from [problem].'

    P7 P10 P12

文章 strategically uses direct quotes from key figures:Joseph saying 'you can purchase this $3 million piece of land',Smith claiming 'the sun provides the lowest cost'。这些 quotes 不仅 add authenticity 和 human voice,还 allow protagonists to make persuasive claims in their own words。特别是 第10段 的 Smith quote,它 introduces a more controversial argument (hidden costs of conventional farming) through personal attribution rather than authorial assertion。这种 technique 让 potentially contentious points 显得 less like editorial stance 更像 stakeholder perspective。

信号词 says explains counters argues notes adds claims states points out emphasizes acknowledges

仿写: 选择 quotes that are specific and memorable 而非 generic statements。Use quotations for claims that carry personal conviction or could be controversial。Always provide proper attribution ('says', 'explains', 'counters')。Context before or after quote should clarify why this voice matters。 [Name] [attribution verb] [his/her] [products/approach] [factual statement], 'but [controversial or subjective claim],' he/she says/explains. '[Memorable specific claim in their own words].'

    P9 P10

虽然文章没有使用 explicit questions,但第九段开头使用 'Though advocates portray grass fed products as a win-win situation' 后紧接 'they do have downsides',这种 acknowledging-then-countering structure functions like implicit questioning。这个 rhetorical move 预判 reader's potential objection:'If it's so great, what's the catch?' 通过 主动 addressing price concerns 和 practical limitations,作者 strengthen overall argument by demonstrating balanced analysis。这种 anticipatory addressing of counterarguments 是 sophisticated persuasive technique,比 ignoring downsides 更 credible。

信号词 though while despite however but yet on the other hand that said nevertheless admittedly

仿写: 即使不用 direct questions,可以 use concessive structures ('though', 'while', 'despite') to acknowledge opposing viewpoints before presenting your response。Structure as: [Acknowledge positive claim] + [transition with 'but'/'however'] + [introduce limitation]。 Though [advocates/supporters] portray [subject] as a [positive characterization] for [parties], [subject] does have downsides. [Specific limitation], for one, is an issue. [Authority figure] says [specific details], but [qualifying information or contrasting data].'

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
The idea that all energy and wealth comes from the sun really intrigued him. He thought the shorter the distance between the sun and the end product, the higher the profit to the farmer.

    这里暗示了 grass-fed agriculture(草饲农业)不仅仅是 farming technique(耕作技术),更是一种高效的 wealth creation model(财富创造模型)。

    P2
This is in comparison with a drop of just under 1% in the total yogurt and kefir market

显性对比类 in comparison with on the other hand whereas by contrast conversely unlike

这增强了文章的主旨:farmers 转型不是为了 trend(时髦),而是为了 survival(生存)和抓住真正的 market demand(市场需求)。

    P4
Another factor is the squeeze that conventional dairy farmers have felt as the price of grain they feed their cows has gone up, tightening their profit margins.

隐喻式负面影响 squeeze / tightening squeeze tightening struggle burden under pressure strained

    这里的言外之意是 conventional farming(传统耕作)已经变成了一个 high-risk(高风险)的赌博,因为 farmers(农户)失去了对 costs(成本)的 control(控制)。

    P9
Though advocates portray grass fed products as a win-win situation for all, they do have downsides. Price, for one, is an issue.

Though / do have downsides though however nonetheless admittedly on the flip side despite

    这段话的 subtext 是提醒读者:虽然 grass-fed 对 ecosystem(生态系统)和 health(健康)有益,但其 economic premium(经济溢价)可能成为 mass adoption(大规模普及)的 obstacle(障碍)。作者通过揭示 downsides,避免了文章沦为 pure promotion(纯粹的宣传),使主旨中关于 conversion(转型)的讨论更加 multifaceted(多维)且 realistic(务实)。

    P11
Collins and Forrest found they'd exhausted their sources for bison raised exclusively on pasture. When they started researching the supply chain, they learned that only 2-3% of all bison is actually grass-fed.

短缺揭示类 exhausted / only 2-3% exhausted limited scarce only a fraction shortage rare

    这段话暗示了 grass-fed bison(草饲野牛)市场近乎 empty(真空状态)。'Only 2-3%' 这一数字极具 irony(讽刺意),因为它揭示了 conventional farming(传统养殖)对 label(标签)的某种程度上的 misleading(误导)。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为积极支持( Supportive and optimistic about grass-fed farming)。

如果 title emphasize 'why' 和 'more',说明作者在 explore 一个 positive development。Opening paragraph 的 emotional tone 也能快速 indicate 作者是 sympathetic 还是 critical to the subject。

如果作者 simply present growth figures without counterbalancing with concerns (like market bubble, environmental cost),这 indicate 作者 view 这个 growth positively。Neutral reporting 通常会 balance positive data with potential risks。

  3. News reports 的 balance 体现在 who gets to speak 和 how much space they get。 特别是当 downsides 被 immediately rebutted 而不是 left for reader to judge,作者 clearly taking a side。

Systematic benefits listing vs. cursory risk mention 是 advocacy 的 hallmark。Neutral reporting 会 give equal structural weight to both sides (比如 'benefits include A, B, C' 后面应该有 'challenges include X, Y, Z' with similar detail)。但这里 benefits get elaborated, risks get minimized, showing 作者认为 benefits outweigh risks。

  5. 综合前面四步,作者的 attitude 非常 clear:这不是 presenting both sides equally,而是 championing a cause through strategic narrative choices。The absence of sustained critical voice, combined with celebratory tone 和 solution-oriented framing (比如 第12段 的 'really cool to see'),都 point to advocacy。

  • fascinated P1

'Fascinated' 在 describe protagonist 时,establish 一个 positive emotional starting point。作者 choose to highlight Joseph's enthusiasm 而不是 his doubts or struggles,这 signal 作者 sympathetic to 他的 vision。在 news feature 中,opening with someone's passion 通常 invite reader to share that enthusiasm。

同类词 hooked intrigued passionate about captivated by drawn to

  • quickly learned P2

'Quickly learned' 后面接 'demand exceeds supply' 是 validation narrative。这个 phrase structure 暗示 Joseph's theory 被 market reality confirmed,作者 present this as vindication 而不是 as one possible outcome。这种 'hypothesis confirmed' framing support 作者的 positive view。

同类词 soon discovered realized found that demonstrated that proved

  • true believers P3

'True believers' 是 admiration language,不是 neutral description。作者 could say 'practitioners' 或 'adopters',但 chose 'believers'—a word with positive, almost reverential connotation。这 reveal 作者 respect 和 align with 这些 farmers 的 commitment。

同类词 champions advocates pioneers committed to dedicated to

  • no end in sight P4

'No end in sight' 在 describe growth 时 convey inevitability and permanence。这不是 tentative 的 'may continue' 或 cautious 的 'for now',而是 confident projection。作者 present grass-fed 的 growth as unstoppable trend, signaling belief in its long-term viability。

同类词 continuing to grow momentum building gaining traction on the rise accelerating

  • Champions P5

'Champions' 作为 subject 来 introduce benefits list,作者 essentially saying 'here's what the good guys believe'。这个 framing 让 subsequent benefits (animal welfare, climate, health) 被 associated with positive actors, making those benefits more credible and appealing。

同类词 champions advocates proponents supporters defenders

  • safe refuge P6

'Safe refuge' 是 protective and reassuring language。作者 frame grass-fed 不只是 profitable option,而是 sanctuary from volatility。这种 security framing 增强 emotional appeal,暗示 grass-fed 不仅 economically smart 而且 provides peace of mind。

同类词 viable option sustainable path secure alternative reliable solution sound choice

  • win-win P9

'Win-win' 是 maximally positive framing—它 suggests no losers, only winners。虽然作者 say 'advocates portray' (attributing 这个 claim to others),但接下来的 'they do have downsides' 用 weak 'do have' rather than strong 'face serious',showing 作者 essentially agree with the win-win framing,只是 token acknowledge of issues。

同类词 mutually beneficial positive for all benefits everyone advantageous for both all-around positive

  • counters P10

'Smith counters' 在 downsides paragraph 的作用是 immediately neutralize concerns。每次 criticism 出现,作者 give advocates a rebuttal,不让 negative points stand alone。这个 back-and-forth structure theoretically 看起来 balanced,但实际上 last word always goes to advocates, tilting the balance。

同类词 argues points out responds rebuts maintains

  • really cool to see P12

'Really cool to see' 是 Collins 的 direct quote,但作者 choose to end the article with this enthusiastic statement。Ending choices 非常 strategic—作者 could've ended with concerns or questions,但 chose to conclude with celebration。

像 '25-30% annual growth rate'、'over 38% increase'、'64-cow herd' 这样的 precise figures 显示文章在 document facts 而非 argue viewpoints。

Tim Joseph、Paul and Phyllis Amburgh、John Smith、Taylor Collins and Katie Forrest 等 multiple actors,每个都有 their own voice 和 specific actions。

  4. 新闻报道关注 current developments 和 recent changes,所以会用 timeline 来 frame the story。这里的 'launched in 2009'、'Since 2010'、'last two years'、'bought in 2016' 构成 chronological progression。

当这些 elements 同时出现并相互 reinforce 时,就能 confidently identify the piece as journalism。
