The relation of language and mind has interested philosophers for many centuries. The Greeks assumed that the structure of language had some connection with the process of thought, which took root in Europe long before people realized how diverse languages could be.

Only recently did linguists begin the serious study of languages that were very different from their own. Two anthropologist-linguists, Franz Boas and Edward Sapir, were pioneers in describing many native languages of North and South America during the first half of the twentieth century. We are obliged to them because some of these languages have since vanished, as the peoples who spoke them died out or became assimilated and lost their native languages. Other linguists in the earlier part of this century, however, who were less eager to deal with bizarre data from "exotic" language, were not always so grateful. The newly described languages were often so strikingly different from the well studied languages of Europe and Southeast Asia that some scholars even accused Boas and Sapir of fabricating their data. Native American languages are indeed different, so much so in fact that Navajo could be used by the US military as a code during World War II to send secret messages.

Sapir's pupil, Benjamin Lee Whorf, continued the study of American Indian languages. Being interested in the relationship of language and thought, Whorf developed the idea that the structure of language determines the structure of habitual thought in a society. He reasoned that because it is easier to formulate certain concepts and not others in a given language, the speakers of that language think along one track and not along another. Whorf came to believe in a sort of linguistic determinism which, in its strongest form, states that language imprisons the mind, and that the grammatical patterns in a language can produce far-reaching consequences for the culture of a society. Later, this idea became known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, but this term is somewhat inappropriate. Although both Sapir and Whorf emphasized the diversity of languages, Sapir himself never explicitly supported the notion of linguistic determinism.

  1. P1

Early Views on Language and Thought

Early philosophers connected language structure with thought before recognizing linguistic diversity.

  2. P2

    Documenting Native American Languages

Boas and Sapir documented diverse Native American languages despite skepticism about their striking differences.

  3. P3

    Whorf and Linguistic Determinism

Whorf developed linguistic determinism, later labeled the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, though Sapir did not explicitly endorse its strongest form.

Greeks language and thought assume

What did the Greeks assume about language and thought?

    • A They believed that all languages followed the same grammatical structure.
    • B They proved that thought could exist independently of language.
    • C They believed that the structure of language was connected with the process of thought.
    • D They argued that cultural diversity had begun in Europe.
    • E They denied that language had any influence on mental processes.
    • F They regarded linguistic diversity as a recent discovery.

    该项完整保留了原文的主体 Greeks、认识态度 believed,以及核心关系 structure of language 与 process of thought 的 connection。

Boas and Sapir gratitude Why

Why are Boas and Sapir described as deserving gratitude?

    • A They persuaded native peoples not to abandon their languages.
    • B They demonstrated that European languages were fabricated.
    • C They created the military code used by the United States during World War II.
    • D Their descriptions preserved knowledge of native languages that later disappeared.
    • E They were the first scholars to reject exotic language data.
    • F They established that Navajo was identical to European languages.

该项概括了完整因果链:两位学者 described many native languages,而 some of these languages have since vanished;因此这些早期 descriptions 成为不可替代的知识保存。

Sapir-Whorf hypothesis somewhat inappropriate Why

Why is the term "Sapir-Whorf hypothesis" considered somewhat inappropriate?

    • A Whorf never studied American Indian languages.
    • B Sapir and Whorf rejected the diversity of languages.
    • C The hypothesis was formulated before Sapir became Whorf's teacher.
    • D Whorf believed that culture had no consequences for grammatical patterns.
    • E Sapir did not explicitly endorse Whorf's linguistic determinism.
    • F The term ignored the role of European languages in World War II.

Sapir never explicitly supported that notion。

这是 expository structure 中的 main body 第一部分,通过 specific examples 和 concrete details 来 demonstrate linguistic study 的 actual development, provides evidence 说明为什么 diversity of languages 变得重要,functionally 它从 abstract philosophy 转向 empirical research,为下一意群的 theoretical development 做 factual preparation

  3. Sapir-Whorf

这个意群 focuses on theoretical development,介绍 Sapir 的 pupil Benjamin Lee Whorf 如何 continued 研究并 developed 一个 controversial idea:language structure determines habitual thought in society。详细 explains 他的 reasoning process,即 easier formulation of certain concepts 导致 speakers think along specific tracks,这 evolved into linguistic determinism 的概念,later 被称为 Sapir-Whorf hypothesis,最后 clarifies Sapir himself 其实 never explicitly supported 这个 deterministic notion

作为 expository writing 的 theoretical climax,这个意群 synthesizes 前面的 empirical observations into a coherent theory, directly addresses 文章主旨中的 Sapir-Whorf hypothesis。它 demonstrates how empirical work leads to theoretical innovation,同时通过 clarification about Sapir's actual position 展现 intellectual honesty,这种 nuanced presentation 是 expository text 的重要特征

MAIN IDEA ·

说明文的 opening paragraph 通常会 introduce the main topic,本文首段提到 relation of language and mind 以及 Greeks 的早期假设,establish 了语言与思维关系这个 central theme,为后文的 development 铺垫

第二段 introduce 了 Franz Boas 和 Edward Sapir 这两位 pioneers,以及他们对 Native American languages 的 documentation work。这个 specific case 将抽象的 topic 具象化,说明文章的 focus 不仅是 language-mind relation 的 general theory,而是 how linguists studied this through diverse languages

第三段 introduce 了 Benjamin Lee Whorf 和他的 linguistic determinism concept,最终 lead to 所谓的 Sapir-Whorf hypothesis。尾段通过 continued, developed, reasoned, came to believe 等 progression markers 显示这是前文 development 的 culmination, represents 文章要 explain 的 key idea

这个 trajectory 表明文章主旨是 explain how linguistic study evolved 并 led to 一个 controversial idea

主旨信号词 pioneers P2 continued P3 hypothesis P3 relationship P3 however P2 linguistic determinism P3

首先,从 parallel structure 看,'died out' 和 'became assimilated' 共同解释了 languages 的 vanishing,前者是 physical extinction,后者必然是 cultural extinction。其次,morphological analysis 告诉我们 'as-simil-ate' 的字面意思是 'to make similar',指向一个 becoming alike 的 process。最后,causal relationship 明确显示 assimilated 的 direct consequence 是 'lost their native languages'。

其次,morphological analysis 显示 'form-ulate' 字面意思是 'to give form to',指向一个 structuring or shaping process。最后,argumentative context 表明 formulate 发生在 language 和 thought 的 interface,是用 linguistic structures 来 organize and express concepts 的过程。综合这三点,formulate concepts 意味着 to express ideas in a clear, structured, and systematic way, typically using language。这不仅仅是简单的 'express',而是强调 giving structure and precision to thoughts。

第三,从 intensity specification 看,determinism 的 strongest form 强调 language 'imprisons' mind,表明这是一种强调 complete control or causation 的 philosophical position。

信号词 for example for instance such as including like take...as an example a case in point

比如讨论 scientific revolution 时,与其说 'many scientists contributed',不如说 'Pioneers like Galileo and Newton transformed...'。

    P2

文章用 Navajo language 作为 US military code 在 World War II 中的运用这个 striking example, powerfully demonstrate 了 Native American languages 与 European languages 的 dramatic difference。这个 wartime application 不仅是 concrete evidence,更从 practical perspective 证明了 linguistic diversity 的 real-world significance, supporting 文章关于 language structure diversity 的 central argument。

信号词 for example for instance such as including like take...as an example a case in point

模版:【观点】+ so much so that + 【令人意外但合理的具体应用】。这种 'proof by surprising application' 比 ordinary examples 更能 impress readers。

    P3

文章通过 Benjamin Lee Whorf 的 research,明确 define 了 'linguistic determinism' 这个 key concept:language imprisons the mind, grammatical patterns 能 produce far-reaching consequences for culture。这个 precise definition 是理解 Sapir-Whorf hypothesis 的 foundation, clarify 了这个 controversial theory 的 core meaning,为后续讨论 its appropriateness 和 Sapir's actual position 铺垫。

信号词 is defined as refers to means is states that can be understood as is known as is called namely

模版:【术语】+ which, in its strongest form, states that + 【核心断言】+ and that + 【延伸含义或影响】。注意使用 'in its strongest form' 这类 qualifier 来 indicate definition 的 scope 或 intensity。

    P3

文章对 'Sapir-Whorf hypothesis' 这个 term 进行 interpretation,指出这个 naming 'is somewhat inappropriate',因为 Sapir himself 从未 explicitly support linguistic determinism 的 notion。这个 clarification 非常 crucial,它 correct 一个 common misconception, reveal 了 theoretical development 中的 historical nuance,让 readers 理解 hypothesis 的 actual origin 比 its name suggests 的更 complex。

信号词 in other words that is to say which means to put it simply actually in fact the point is what this means is

先给出 judgement(如 'inappropriate', 'misleading', 'significant'),然后用 causal connectors 解释原因。模版:【对象】+ is + 【评价性形容词】+ because/although/but + 【具体解释或对比】。

    P2

文章通过 contrast Native American languages 与 'well studied languages of Europe and Southeast Asia',highlight 了前者的 striking differences。这个 comparison 不仅 emphasize linguistic diversity 的 extent,更 explain 了为什么 some scholars 会 accuse Boas and Sapir of fabricating data——因为 difference 大到 incredible。

信号词 compared to in contrast to unlike different from similar to as...as more...than while whereas on the other hand

是 highlight difference 还是 show similarity?模版:【对象 A】+ were so + 【形容词】+ different from + 【对象 B】+ that + 【surprising consequence】。使用 intensifiers('so...that', 'much more...than')来 amplify contrast 的 significance。

    P1

文章 invoke 了 Greek philosophers 关于 language and thought 之间 connection 的 ancient assumption,这个 historical reference 为整篇文章的 inquiry 提供 intellectual lineage。通过 trace 这个 question back to Greeks,作者 establish 这不是 modern invention,而是 centuries-old philosophical concern,给后续讨论 20th-century linguists 的 contributions 增添 historical depth 和 intellectual weight。

信号词 according to as...stated research shows studies indicate argued that believed that assumed that suggested that claimed that

注意使用 past tense 来 indicate historical nature,用 'which' clause 来 connect citation 与 current discussion。避免 isolated quotations——always explain their significance。

    P2

文章提到 Franz Boas 和 Edward Sapir 在 'the first half of the twentieth century' 以及后文的 'World War II' 这些 specific time references,虽然不是 statistical data,但提供 precise temporal markers。这些 chronological details 让 linguistic study 的 historical development 有了 clear timeline,帮助 readers 理解 different stages 的 research 和 theoretical evolution 的 sequence,使 narrative 更 concrete and verifiable。

信号词 percent approximately nearly over more than less than during in [year] for [duration]

模版:【事件/研究】+ during/in + 【具体时间段】+ 【resulting impact】。对于 time periods,可以用 'the first/second half of' 或 'early/mid/late' 来 provide context without excessive precision。

    P1
which took root in Europe long before people realized how diverse languages could be

时间对比类 long before before prior to not until only recently only later it was not until...that

这个 implication 是:希腊人和早期欧洲学者的 assumption about language-mind relationship 是建立在 limited data 之上的,因为他们 long before 就形成了理论,却不知道 languages 可以多么 diverse。

    P2
Other linguists in the earlier part of this century, however, who were less eager to deal with bizarre data from "exotic" language, were not always so grateful

转折类 however but yet nevertheless nonetheless on the contrary in contrast

Bizarre' 和 'exotic' 加引号 suggest 作者 distance 自己 from 这种 dismissive attitude,实际是在 criticize 那些 conventional linguists 的 narrow-mindedness 和 Eurocentric bias。作者 side with Boas 和 Sapir,认为其他 linguists 'not grateful' 是 unjustified。

    P2
Native American languages are indeed different, so much so in fact that Navajo could be used by the US military as a code during World War II

强化程度类 so much so so much so that to such an extent that so...that such...that indeed in fact

这个 concrete example 既 proves linguistic diversity 的 authenticity,又 demonstrates 这种 diversity 有 real-world practical implications。

    P3
Later, this idea became known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, but this term is somewhat inappropriate. Although both Sapir and Whorf emphasized the diversity of languages, Sapir himself never explicitly supported the notion of linguistic determinism

转折类 but however although though yet nevertheless despite the name

这个 implication reveals 'Sapir-Whorf hypothesis' 这个 widely used term 是 historical misnomer——Sapir 虽然 emphasized linguistic diversity,但从未 explicitly endorse Whorf 的 linguistic determinism 这个 extreme position。作者 subtly point out Whorf 是 sole proponent of 'language imprisons the mind' 这个 strong form,而将 Sapir 的 name attach 到这个 hypothesis 是 inappropriate credit/blame assignment。这个 clarification 对 article's thesis 很 crucial:它 demonstrate 即使在 groundbreaking theories 的 development 中也有 overgeneralization 和 misattribution, remind readers 要 distinguish between documenting linguistic diversity(Sapir 和 Boas 的 contribution)和 claiming linguistic determinism(Whorf 的 controversial extension)。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为客观中立( measured and objective, with cautious reservation toward strong linguistic determinism)。

作者先客观转述'other linguists...accused Boas and Sapir of fabricating their data',这是第三方的skeptical态度,但紧接着用indeed和Navajo code的例子进行反驳,说明作者本人其实站在肯定一方,对两位学者持gratitude的态度。

  • obliged P2

  • indeed P2

同类词 in fact certainly truly undeniably

  • however P2

    however引出了'other linguists...were not always so grateful'这一对比,标志着从对Boas/Sapir的正面评价转向另一批学者的skeptical态度,提示读者留意态度的分层。

同类词 but yet nevertheless nonetheless on the other hand

  • somewhat inappropriate P3

同类词 hardly accurate not quite right questionable misleading debatable

新闻报道则会用 lead paragraph 突出 who/what/when/where。而说明文只是 set up the topic,没有 argumentative position,也没有 news value 的 immediate facts。

议论文的 body 会有 premise-conclusion structure,用 'therefore'、'thus'、'consequently' 连接 logical steps。 说明文则是 organized by aspects of the topic,用 'Also'、'In addition'、'Another' 这类 additive transitions。

新闻报道会有 immediacy markers 如 'today'、'just announced'。说明文的 tone 始终 detached,只 present information without pushing a view or creating urgency。

本文的 purpose 明显是 inform readers about 语言学研究的 historical development 和 theoretical concepts,而不是 argue for Sapir-Whorf hypothesis 的 validity,也不是 report a breaking news about linguistics。这种 knowledge-transmission function 是 expository writing 的 defining feature。
