Only recently did linguists begin the serious study of languages that were very different from their own. Two anthropologist-linguists, Franz Boas and Edward Sapir, were pioneers in describing many native languages of North and South America during the first half of the twentieth century. (42)We are obliged to them because some of these languages have since vanished, as the peoples who spoke them died out or became assimilated and lost their native languages. Other linguists in the earlier part of this century, however, who were less eager to deal with bizarre data from "exotic" language, were not always so grateful. (43)The newly described languages were often so strikingly different from the well studied languages of Europe and Southeast Asia that some scholars even accused Boas and Sapir of fabricating their data. Native American languages are indeed different, so much so in fact that Navajo could be used by the US military as a code during World War II to send secret messages.

Sapir's pupil, Benjamin Lee Whorf, continued the study of American Indian languages. (44)Being interested in the relationship of language and thought, Whorf developed the idea that the structure of language determines the structure of habitual thought in a society. He reasoned that because it is easier to formulate certain concepts and not others in a given language, the speakers of that language think along one track and not along another. (45)Whorf came to believe in a sort of linguistic determinism which, in its strongest form, states that language imprisons the mind, and that the grammatical patterns in a language can produce far-reaching consequences for the culture of a society. Later, this idea became known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, but this term is somewhat inappropriate. Although both Sapir and Whorf emphasized the diversity of languages, Sapir himself never explicitly supported the notion of linguistic determinism.

语言与思维关系的研究脉络全文是一篇语言学思想史小品,沿「希腊人猜想 → Boas/Sapir 描写美洲土著语 → Whorf 提出语言决定论」这条线展开,作者基调中立偏学术叙述,对萨丕尔—沃尔夫假说持有所保留的态度(见 this term is somewhat inappropriate 与 Sapir himself never explicitly supported the notion of linguistic determinism)。

  • Q41 中 which 的回指句中 which took root in Europe 的 which 不是指紧邻的 the process of thought,而是回指整个前面的命题——希腊人「认为语言结构与思维过程有某种联系」这一观念。
  • Q42 中 them / these languages / the peoples who spoke them 的指代链them 回指上一句 Two anthropologist-linguists, Franz Boas and Edward Sapir;these languages 回指 many native languages of North and South America;后半 the peoples who spoke them 中的 them 又回指 these languages。
  • Q43 中 the newly described languages 的指代the newly described languages 即 many native languages of North and South America,是 Boas 和 Sapir 在 20 世纪上半叶描写的那批土著语。
  • 全文术语统一linguistic determinism 全文统一译作「语言决定论」(见 a sort of linguistic determinism 与 the notion of linguistic determinism);structure of language 统一译作「语言结构」;habitual thought 统一译作「习惯性思维」。

(41) The Greeks assumed that the structure of language had some connection with the process of thought, which took root in Europe long before people realized how diverse languages could be.

  • The Greeks assumed that(主干主谓 + that 宾语从句引导词)希腊人认为

  • the structure of language had some connection with the process of thought,(that 宾语从句(采分意群))采分语言的结构与思维的过程有某种联系,

  • which took root in Europe(which 引导的非限制性定语从句(采分意群))采分这一看法在欧洲扎下根

  • long before people realized how diverse languages could be.(long before 引导的时间状语从句(采分意群))采分远在人们意识到各种语言会有多么不同之前。

难点:long before 与 how diverse … could be 的译法long before 译作「远在…

which 从句与 long before 状语的汉化which took root in Europe long before people realized how diverse languages could be 这部分整体是对前面命题的补充叙述,汉语不便用「…

(42) We are obliged to them because some of these languages have since vanished, as the peoples who spoke them died out or became assimilated and lost their native languages.

  • We are obliged to them(主干主系表(采分意群))采分我们感激他们

难点:be obliged to sb. 的熟词僻义obliged 不译「被迫/有义务」,be obliged to sb.

  • because some of these languages have since vanished,(because 原因状语从句(采分意群))采分因为其中一些语言此后已经消失了,

  • as the peoples who spoke them died out(as 原因状语从句 + who 定语从句(采分意群))采分因为说这些语言的民族已灭绝

  • or became assimilated and lost their native languages.(与 died out 并列的两个谓语(采分意群))采分或者被同化、失去了自己的母语。

(43) The newly described languages were often so strikingly different from the well studied languages of Europe and Southeast Asia that some scholars even accused Boas and Sapir of fabricating their data.

  • The newly described languages were often so strikingly different from the well studied languages of Europe and Southeast Asia(主干主系表 + so…that 前半(采分意群))采分这些新近被描写的语言常常与欧洲和东南亚那些已被充分研究的语言差异极其显著,

strikingly different from…

  • that some scholars even accused Boas and Sapir(so…that 结果状语从句主干(采分意群))采分以至于一些学者甚至指责 Boas 和 Sapir

    难点:so…that 结果状语 + even 的语气so…that 在此是「如此…

  • of fabricating their data.(accuse sb. of doing 的搭配补足语(采分意群))采分捏造了他们的数据。

难点:accuse sb. of doing 固定搭配 + their 指代accuse sb. of doing sth.

so…that 的汉化与 of doing 的归位so strikingly different from … that some scholars even accused … accuse sb. of doing 中的 of fabricating their data 在汉语里直接译成「指责…

(44) Being interested in the relationship of language and thought, Whorf developed the idea that the structure of language determines the structure of habitual thought in a society.

  • Being interested in the relationship of language and thought,(现在分词短语作原因/伴随状语(采分意群))采分由于对语言与思维的关系感兴趣,

    难点:Being + p.p. 状语的逻辑义Being interested in… relationship of language and thought 译「语言与思维的关系」(the relationship of A and B 此处等同 relationship between A and B)。

  • that the structure of language determines the structure of habitual thought in a society.(the idea 的 that 同位语从句(采分意群))采分即一个社会中语言的结构决定其习惯性思维的结构。

Being interested in the relationship of language and thought, Whorf developed the idea … 同位语从句 that the structure of language determines the structure of habitual thought in a society 按汉语习惯,在「观点」后加冒号或「即/认为」承接,再译从句内容,比硬译成「…

(45) Whorf came to believe in a sort of linguistic determinism which, in its strongest form, states that language imprisons the mind, and that the grammatical patterns in a language can produce far-reaching consequences for the culture of a society.

  • Whorf came to believe in a sort of linguistic determinism(主干主谓宾(采分意群))采分沃尔夫逐渐相信一种语言决定论

难点:came to do 与 believe in 的搭配came to believe 是「come to do」结构,表「逐渐开始(相信/认识到)」,强调认识过程,不译「来相信」;believe in 译「信奉/相信(某种学说)」;a sort of 译「一种」即可,不必译「某种类型的」;linguistic determinism 按全文统一译「语言决定论」。

  • which, in its strongest form, states that(which 引导的非限制性定语从句主干 + 插入语(采分意群))采分这种学说,以其最强的形式,主张

  • and that the grammatical patterns in a language can produce far-reaching consequences for the culture of a society.(states 的第二个 that 宾语从句(与前一 that 并列,采分意群))采分并且一种语言中的语法模式会对一个社会的文化产生深远的影响。

    难点:两个 that 并列 + far-reaching consequences 的固定译法and that… 是与前面 that language imprisons the mind 并列的第二个宾语从句,两 that 都受 states 支配,译时要把两 that 从句作为「主张的两条内容」并列译出,可用「并且/而且」连接;far-reaching consequences for…

并…」a sort of linguistic determinism which, in its strongest form, states that … and that …
