Text 2
P1Over the past century, all kinds of unfairness and discrimination have been condemned or made illegal. But one insidious form continues to thrive: alphabetism. This, for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantage, refers to discrimination against those whose surnames begin with a letter in the lower half of the alphabet.

P2It has long been known that a taxi firm called AAAA cars has a big advantage over Zodiac cars when customers thumb through their phone directories. Less well known is the advantage that Adam Abbott has in life over Zoë Zysman. English names are fairly evenly spread between the halves of the alphabet. Yet a suspiciously large number of top people have surnames beginning with letters between A and K.

P3Thus the American president and vice-president have surnames starting with B and C respectively; and 26 of George Bush's predecessors (including his father) had surnames in the first half of the alphabet against just 16 in the second half. Even more striking, six of the seven heads of government of the G7 rich countries are alphabetically advantaged (Berlusconi, Blair, Bush, Chirac, Chrétien and Koizumi). The world's three top central bankers (Greenspan, Duisenberg and Hayami) are all close to the top of the alphabet, even if one of them really uses Japanese characters. As are the world's five richest men (Gates, Buffett, Allen, Ellison and Albrecht).

P4Can this merely be coincidence? One theory, dreamt up in all the spare time enjoyed by the alphabetically disadvantaged, is that the rot sets in early. At the start of the first year in infant school, teachers seat pupils alphabetically from the front, to make it easier to remember their names. So short-sighted Zysman junior gets stuck in the back row, and is rarely asked the improving questions posed by those insensitive teachers. At the time the alphabetically disadvantaged may think they have had a lucky escape. Yet the result may be worse qualifications, because they get less individual attention, as well as less confidence in speaking publicly.

P5The humiliation continues. At university graduation ceremonies, the ABCs proudly get their awards first; by the time they reach the Zysmans most people are literally having a ZZZ. Shortlists for job interviews, election ballot papers, lists of conference speakers and attendees: all tend to be drawn up alphabetically, and their recipients lose interest as they plough through them.

26.
What does the author intend to illustrate with AAAA cars and Zodiac cars?
[ A ]A kind of overlooked inequality.
[ B ]A type of conspicuous bias.
[ C ]A type of personal prejudice.
[ D ]A kind of brand discrimination.

A(例证目的题)

What does the author intend to illustrate with AAAA cars and Zodiac cars?

What does the author intend to illustrate with AAAA cars and Zodiac cars? What does the author intend to illustrate, with 短语表示「用…

P2

It has long been known that a taxi firm called AAAA cars has a big advantage over Zodiac cars when customers thumb through their phone directories. Less well known is the advantage that Adam Abbott has in life over Zoë Zysman.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • But one insidious form continues to thrive: alphabetismA kind of overlooked inequality
    • Less well known is the advantage that Adam Abbott has in life over Zoë ZysmanA kind of overlooked inequality

A kind of overlooked inequality

A type of conspicuous bias 中 conspicuous(显眼的)与原文 insidious 与 Less well known 正相反,方向完全颠倒。

    A type of personal prejudice

A kind of brand discrimination(品牌歧视)只对应 AAAA/Zodiac 公司例的字面,忽略了 Less well known is the advantage that Adam Abbott has in life over Zoë Zysman

27.
What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?
[ A ]In both East and West, names are essential to success.
[ B ]The alphabet is to blame for the failure of Zoë Zysman.
[ C ]Customers often pay a lot of attention to companies' names.
[ D ]Some form of discrimination is too subtle to recognize.

D(推断题)

What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?

What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?

P1

But one insidious form continues to thrive: alphabetism. This, for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantage, refers to discrimination against those whose surnames begin with a letter in the lower half of the alphabet.

原文只举了美国总统、G7、富豪等西方例子,even if one of them really uses Japanese characters 是一句轻描淡写的让步,并未支持「名字对东西方都至关重要」。

The alphabet is to blame for the failure of Zoë Zysman 中 failure(失败)远比原文 less … advantage(占便宜较少)严重,且 to blame for(归咎于)把相关性升级为因果责任。

Customers often pay a lot of attention to companies' names 只覆盖 a taxi firm called AAAA cars 一个例子,且原文是 thumb through phone directories(翻名录),并不能推出「顾客重视公司名」这一普遍结论。

  • D)✓ 正确
    • one insidious form continues to thrive: alphabetismSome form of discrimination is too subtle to recognize
    • for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantagetoo subtle to recognize

28.
The 4th paragraph suggests that_____.
[ A ]questions are often put to the more intelligent students
[ B ]alphabetically disadvantaged students often escape from class
[ C ]teachers should pay attention to all of their students
[ D ]students should be seated according to their eyesight

第四段表明_____

C(推断题)

The 4th paragraph suggests that

The 4th paragraph suggests that_____.

P4

So short-sighted Zysman junior gets stuck in the back row, and is rarely asked the improving questions posed by those insensitive teachers. … Yet the result may be worse qualifications, because they get less individual attention, as well as less confidence in speaking publicly.

原文只说前排学生因座位被多提问,从未说他们「更聪明」;questions are often put to the more intelligent students 中的 more intelligent 凭空添加。

alphabetically disadvantaged students often escape from class 中 escape from class(逃课)字面误导自 At the time the alphabetically disadvantaged may think they have had a lucky escape——原文意为「以为逃过一劫」,并非「逃课」。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • those insensitive teachersteachers should pay attention to all of their students
    • they get less individual attentionpay attention to all of their students

students should be seated according to their eyesight

29.
What does the author mean by "most people are literally having a ZZZ" (Lines 2-3, Paragraph 5)?
[ A ]They are getting impatient.
[ B ]They are noisily dozing off.
[ C ]They are feeling humiliated.
[ D ]They are busy with word puzzles.

B(词义句意题)

What does the author mean by

What does the author mean by "most people are literally having a ZZZ" 中 literally 修饰 having a ZZZ,ZZZ 是漫画里表示打瞌睡的拟声符号,理解为「字面意义上在打呼噜」即可。

P5

At university graduation ceremonies, the ABCs proudly get their awards first; by the time they reach the Zysmans most people are literally having a ZZZ.

They are getting impatient(不耐烦)只是 dozing off(已睡着)的前一步状态,原文 literally having a ZZZ 强调「真的在打呼噜」,已经越过不耐烦。

  • B)✓ 正确
    • most people are literally having a ZZZThey are noisily dozing off

They are feeling humiliated 中 humiliated(感到羞辱)对应的是 The humiliation continues 的句子,但那是描述「被忽视的 Zysmans」的处境,不是 ZZZ 句的语义。

They are busy with word puzzles(在玩字谜)字面联想 ZZZ 像字谜里的符号,但原文从未提及字谜,是凭空臆造。

30.
Which of the following is true according to the text?
[ A ]People with surnames beginning with N to Z are often ill-treated.
[ B ]VIPs in the Western world gain a great deal from alphabetism.
[ C ]The campaign to eliminate alphabetism still has a long way to go.
[ D ]Putting things alphabetically may lead to unintentional bias.

D(细节题)

Which of the following is true according to the text?

Which of the following is true according to the text?

P5

Shortlists for job interviews, election ballot papers, lists of conference speakers and attendees: all tend to be drawn up alphabetically, and their recipients lose interest as they plough through them.

People with surnames beginning with N to Z are often ill-treated

VIPs in the Western world gain a great deal from alphabetism 暗示名人靠字母表歧视获益甚多;但原文只是观察到名人多姓 A\~K 的相关性,Can this merely be coincidence?

The campaign to eliminate alphabetism still has a long way to go

    • all tend to be drawn up alphabetically, and their recipients lose interest as they plough through themPutting things alphabetically may lead to unintentional bias
    • teachers seat pupils alphabetically from the front, to make it easier to remember their namesmay lead to unintentional bias

    D 用 may(程度词温和)+ unintentional(无意识)+ bias(偏向),三处都与全文措辞精确对应,是最稳的真陈述。
