Text 4
P1Americans today don't place a very high value on intellect. Our heroes are athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs, not scholars. Even our schools are where we send our children to get a practical education—not to pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Symptoms of pervasive anti-intellectualism in our schools aren't difficult to find.

P2"Schools have always been in a society where practical is more important than intellectual," says education writer Diane Ravitch. "Schools could be a counterbalance." Ravitch's latest book, Left Back: A Century of Failed School Reforms, traces the roots of anti-intellectualism in our schools, concluding they are anything but a counterbalance to the American distaste for intellectual pursuits.

P3But they could and should be. Encouraging kids to reject the life of the mind leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and control. Without the ability to think critically, to defend their ideas and understand the ideas of others, they cannot fully participate in our democracy. Continuing along this path, says writer Earl Shorris, "We will become a second-rate country. We will have a less civil society."

P4"Intellect is resented as a form of power or privilege," writes historian and professor Richard Hofstadter in Anti-intellectualism in American Life, a Pulitzer-Prize winning book on the roots of anti-intellectualism in US politics, religion, and education. From the beginning of our history, says Hofstadter, our democratic and populist urges have driven us to reject anything that smells of elitism. Practicality, common sense, and native intelligence have been considered more noble qualities than anything you could learn from a book.

P5Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalist philosophers thought schooling and rigorous book learning put unnatural restraints on children: "We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing." Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn exemplified American anti-intellectualism. Its hero avoids being civilized—going to school and learning to read—so he can preserve his innate goodness.

P6Intellect, according to Hofstadter, is different from native intelligence, a quality we reluctantly admire. Intellect is the critical, creative, and contemplative side of the mind. Intelligence seeks to grasp, manipulate, re-order, and adjust, while intellect examines, ponders, wonders, theorizes, criticizes, and imagines.

P7School remains a place where intellect is mistrusted. Hofstadter says our country's educational system is in the grips of people who "joyfully and militantly proclaim their hostility to intellect and their eagerness to identify with children who show the least intellectual promise."

36.
What do American parents expect their children to acquire in school?
[ A ]The habit of thinking independently.
[ B ]Profound knowledge of the world.
[ C ]Practical abilities for future career.
[ D ]The confidence in intellectual pursuits.

C(细节题)

What do American parents expect their children to acquire in school?

What do American parents expect their children to acquire in school,宾语从句是 expect + 宾语 their children + to do 不定式 acquire,疑问词 what 是 acquire 的宾语前置;结构平铺直叙,无陷阱。

P1

Even our schools are where we send our children to get a practical education—not to pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge.

The habit of thinking independently Without the ability to think critically, to defend their ideas and understand the ideas of others, they cannot fully participate in our democracy.

Profound knowledge of the world 正对应原文被否定的 pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge,把家长本不期望的内容当作期望,倾向相反。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • practical educationPractical abilities for future career

The confidence in intellectual pursuits

37.
We can learn from the text that Americans have a history of_____.
[ A ]undervaluing intellect.
[ B ]favoring intellectualism.
[ C ]supporting school reform.
[ D ]suppressing native intelligence.

A(细节题)

We can learn from the text that Americans have a history of_____. 用 we can learn from the text 而非 infer/imply,问的是文中已点明、可直接读出的判断,仍属细节范畴。

主句 We can learn from the text + that 引导的宾语从句 Americans have a history of_____,空格作介词 of 的宾语,应填名词或动名词性短语;结构简单,无陷阱。

P4

From the beginning of our history, says Hofstadter, our democratic and populist urges have driven us to reject anything that smells of elitism.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • Intellect is resented as a form of power or privilegeundervaluing intellect
    • From the beginning of our historyhave a history of

Americans today don't place a very high value on intellect 及 Intellect is resented 直接相反。

Left Back: A Century of Failed School Reforms,但这是一本批判校改失败的书,并非美国人 "支持校改" 的证据;以书名诱选。

suppressing native intelligence 与 native intelligence have been considered more noble qualities than anything you could learn from a book 相反——原文恰是说本能型才智被推崇,而非被压制。

38.
The views of Ravitch and Emerson on schooling are_____.
[ A ]identical.
[ B ]similar.
[ C ]complementary.
[ D ]opposite.

D(细节题)

The views of Ravitch and Emerson on schooling are_____. 用 are 直接问两人观点的关系,选项是 identical/similar/complementary/opposite 四种关系判断,本质是细节比对。

主语 The views of Ravitch and Emerson on schooling 是

P5

Ravitch's view: "Schools could be a counterbalance." Emerson's view: schooling and rigorous book learning put unnatural restraints on children; "We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing."

similar 试图把对立立场弱化为 "相似",但 bellyful of words and do not know a thing 与 Schools could be a counterbalance.

    • Schools could be a counterbalance.opposite
    • We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing.opposite

39.
Emerson, according to the text, is probably_____.
[ A ]a pioneer of education reform.
[ B ]an opponent of intellectualism.
[ C ]a scholar in favor of intellect.
[ D ]an advocate of regular schooling.

B(推断题)

Emerson, according to the text, is probably_____.

P5

Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalist philosophers thought schooling and rigorous book learning put unnatural restraints on children: "We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing."

    a pioneer of education reform

    • schooling and rigorous book learning put unnatural restraints on childrenan opponent of intellectualism
    • Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn exemplified American anti-intellectualisman opponent of intellectualism

a scholar in favor of intellect 把 Emerson 反智的立场翻转为支持智识者,与 schooling and rigorous book learning put unnatural restraints on children 直接相反。

an advocate of regular schooling We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing.

40.
What does the author think of intellect?
[ A ]It is second to intelligence.
[ B ]It evolves from common sense.
[ C ]It is to be pursued.
[ D ]It underlies power.

C(态度题)

What does the author think of intellect?

What does the author think of intellect? 是 think of sth. 的提问结构,what 作 think of 的宾语前置;句式简单,关键是 think of 等于 have what opinion of。

It is second to intelligence 来自 Intellect, according to Hofstadter, is different from native intelligence, a quality we reluctantly admire.,原文只说两者不同、并指出社会勉强欣赏的是 intelligence,并未说作者认为 intellect 次于 intelligence。

It evolves from common sense 与 Practicality, common sense, and native intelligence have been considered more noble qualities than anything you could learn from a book.

    • Encouraging kids to reject the life of the mind leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and control. It is to be pursued
    • intellect is mistrustedIt is to be pursued

It is to be pursued

It underlies power 把 Intellect is resented as a form of power or privilege
