The Changes Facing Fast Food

Fast-food firms have to be a thick-skinned bunch. Health experts regularly criticise them severely for selling food that makes people fat. Critics even complain that McDonald's, whose logo symbolises calorie excess, should not have been allowed to sponsor the World Cup. These are things fast-food firms have learnt to cope with. But not perhaps for much longer. The burger business faces more pressure from regulators at a time when it is already adapting strategies in response to shifts in the global economy.

Fast food was once thought to be recession-proof. When consumers need to cut spending, the logic goes, cheap meals like Big Macs and Whoppers become even more attractive. Such "trading down" proved true for much of the latest recession, when fast-food companies picked up customers who could no longer afford to eat at casual restaurants. Traffic was boosted in America, the home of fast food, with discounts and promotions, such as $1 menus and cheap combination meals.

As a result, fast-food chains have weathered the recession better than their more expensive competitors. In 2009 sales at full-service restaurants in America fell by more than 6%, but total sales remained about the same at fast-food chains. In some markets, such as Japan, France and Britain, total spending on fast food increased. Same-store sales in America at McDonald's, the world's largest fast-food company, did not decline throughout the downturn. Panera Bread, an American fast-food chain known for its fresh ingredients, performed well, too, because it offers higher-quality food at lower prices than restaurants.

But not all fast-food companies have been as fortunate. Many, such as Burger King, have seen sales fall. In a severe recession, while some people trade down to fast food, many others eat at home more frequently to save money. David Palmer, an analyst at UBS, a bank, says smaller fast-food chains in America, such as Jack in the Box and Carl's Jr., have been hit particularly hard in this downturn because they are competing with the global giant McDonald, which increased spending on advertising by more than 7% last year as others cut back.

Some fast-food companies also sacrificed their own profits by trying to give customers better value. During the recession companies set prices low, hoping that once they had tempted customers through the door they would be persuaded to order more expensive items. But in many cases that strategy did not work. Last year Burger franchisees(特许经营人) sued(起诉) the company over its double-cheeseburger promotion, claiming it was unfair for them to be required to sell these for $1 when they cost $1.10 to make. In May a judge ruled in favour of Burger King. Nevertheless, the company may still be cursing its decision to promote cheap choices over more expensive ones because items on its "value menu" now account for around 20% of all sales, up from 12% last October.

Analysts expect the fast-food industry to grow modestly this year. But the downturn is making companies rethink their strategies. Many are now introducing higher-priced items to entice(引诱) consumers away from $1specials. RFC, a division of Yum! Brands, which also owns Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, has launched a chicken sandwich that costs around $5. And in May Burger King introduced barbecue(烧烤) pork ribs at $7 for eight.

Companies are also trying to get customers to buy new and more items, including drinks. McDonald's started selling better coffee as a challenge to Starbucks. Its "McCafe" line now accounts for an estimated 6% of sales in America. Starbucks has sold rights to its Seattle's Best coffee brand to Burger King, which will start selling it later this year.

As fast-food companies shift from "super-size" to "more buys", they need to keep customer traffic high throughout the day. Many see breakfast as a big opportunity, and not just for fatty food. McDonald's will start selling porridge(粥) in America next year. Breakfast has the potential to be very profitable, says Sara Senatore of Bernstein, a research firm, because the margins can be high. Fast-food companies are also adding midday and late-night snacks, such as blended drinks and wraps. The idea is that by having a greater range of things on the menu, "we can sell to consumers products they want all day," says Rick Carucci, the chief financial officer of Yum! Brands.

But what about those growing waistlines? So far, fast-food firms have cleverly avoided government regulation. By providing healthy options, like salads and low-calorie sandwiches, they have at least given the impression of doing something about helping to fight obesity(肥胖症). These offerings are not necessarily loss-leaders, as they broaden the appeal of outlets to groups of diners that include some people who don't want to eat a burger. But customers cannot be forced to order salads instead of fries.

In the future, simply offering a healthy option may not be good enough. "Every packaged-food and restaurant company I know is concerned about regulation right now," says Mr. Palmer of UBS. America's health-reform bill, which Congress passed this year, requires restaurant chains with 20 or more outlets to put the calorie-content of items they serve on the menu. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, which tracked the effects on Starbucks of a similar calorie-posting law in New York City in 2007, found that the average calorie-count per transaction fell 6% and revenue increased 3% at Starbucks stores where a Dunkin Donuts outlet was nearby—a sign, it is said, that menu-labelling could favour chains that have more healthy offerings.

In order to avoid other legislation in America and elsewhere, fast-food companies will have to continue innovating(创新). Walt Riker of McDonald's claims the change it has made in its menu means it offers more healthy items than it did a few years ago. "We probably sell more vegetables, more milk, more salads, more apples than any restaurant business in the world," he says. But the recent proposal by a county in California to ban McDonald's from including toys in its high-calorie "Happy Meals", because legislators believe it attracts children to unhealthy food, suggests there is a lot more left to do.

  4. P4

    The Uneven Impact of Recession

  5. P5

    The Cost of Value Promotions

Heavy discounting attracted customers but undermined fast-food profits.

  10. P10

    Calorie Labeling and Regulation

Calorie-labeling rules may intensify regulation and favor healthier chains.

  11. P11

    More Change Still Needed

Despite healthier innovations, fast-food firms still face pressure for further change.

选项中的 list 对应 put on the menu,准确还原了强制动作。

California Happy Meals

What does the proposed California restriction on Happy Meals suggest?

    • A Fast-food firms still face pressure to make further changes to avoid regulation.
    • B McDonald's has already been banned from selling Happy Meals in California.
    • C All American counties require toys in children's meals.
    • D Healthy menu changes have removed all regulatory concerns.
    • E Legislators believe toys make high-calorie food less attractive to children.
    • F Fast-food companies no longer need to innovate their menus.

News lead 的典型写法是在 first paragraph 就 establish 核心 conflict,这里通过 traditional criticism vs. new regulatory pressure 的 contrast 来 frame 整篇 article 要探讨的 dual challenges,为后文展开 economic adaptation 和 health regulation 两条 storyline 做 setup。

这两个 paragraphs 通过 recession-proof concept、trading down behavior、和 concrete sales data 展示 fast-food chains 在 economic downturn 中的 resilience,用 McDonald's 和 Panera Bread 作为 success examples 来 support 这个 narrative。

这种 'good news first' 的 sequencing 是典型的 analytical journalism pattern。

通过 'but not all' 的 contrast marker 转向 struggling companies 像 Burger King,分析它们面临的 competition from McDonald's 和 failed value strategy,用 lawsuit case 作为 concrete example 说明 low-price promotion 的 backfire effect。

News reporting 需要 balanced perspective,这个 section 通过 present 'the other side of the story' 来 add nuance 和 complexity。

这是 news article 的 core explanatory section,它系统展示 industry 如何 respond to challenges。通过 enumerate concrete strategies 和 cite company actions,这个 section 既 answer 'what are they doing' 的 question,又通过 detail 和 specificity 来 demonstrate 这些 changes 的 scope 和 seriousness,直接对应主旨中的 'adapt strategies' 和 'introducing premium items, expanding daypart offerings'。

最后三个 paragraphs 聚焦 health regulation 这个 second major pressure,讨论 current approaches 像 offering salads 和 healthy options,分析 future threats 像 calorie-labeling laws 和 menu regulation,最后用 California toy ban proposal 强调 ongoing challenges 和 need for continued innovation。

News structure 常用 'two-pillar' approach 来 organize complex stories。前面处理了 economic adaptation,这个 section 完成 second pillar about regulatory pressure。通过 present current tactics、cite research evidence、和 highlight ongoing risks,它 substantiate 主旨中 'avoid stricter government intervention over obesity concerns' 这个 claim,并 reinforce 文章 opening 提到的 regulatory pressure。

MAIN IDEA ·

本文明显分为两大 blocks:前半部分(第2段-5)用 recession context 说明 why change is needed,后半部分(第6段-8)展示 what companies are doing。 识别这种 structural shift 能帮你判断 whether the focus is on problems or solutions。

News articles 的 concluding sections 常引入 future implications 或 broader context,帮助 elevate the story 从 specific events 到 systemic issues。本文尾段不是简单 summarize 前文,而是 escalate the stakes:从 economic adaptation 转向 regulatory threat(如 calorie labeling laws、toy bans)。

  4. 新闻报道的主旨判断需要 integrate three layers:initial framing(首段的 problem statement)、developmental evidence(中间段的 data 和 examples)、conclusive implication(尾段的 future outlook)。本文的 coherence 体现在:首段的 'pressure' 在中间段被 specified 为 economic pressure(recession、competition),在尾段被 expanded 为 regulatory pressure(health laws、calorie labeling)。

MAIN IDEA ·

Fast-food companies face mounting pressures from economic shifts and health regulations. While they weathered the recession better than full-service restaurants, they must now adapt strategies—introducing premium items, expanding daypart offerings, and providing healthier options—to sustain growth and avoid stricter government intervention over obesity concerns.

让我们把这些 clues 串起来:fast-food industry 持续面对 severe criticism,但他们 have learnt to cope with 这些攻击。

让我们把 logical chain 理清:fast-food chains weathered the recession,结果是他们 performed better than competitors。Concrete evidence 是 sales remained stable while others fell。

让我们 synthesize:industry will grow modestly,但这个 growth 不足以避免 strategic rethinking。 在 economic forecast context 中,modestly 表示 growth 是 positive 但 not dramatic。

比如,如果写 tech companies,可以说 'Tech giants have long been used to rapid growth',然后引出 current challenges。 [Subject] have [past experience/characteristic], but [current situation] poses new [challenges/opportunities].'

信号词 says claims according to the logic goes

引入 quote 时要自然,比如 'According to [expert name], [position/company]...' 或 '[Expert] of [organization] says...'。 [Action/Trend] + attribution phrase + quote. This [quote] reveals/suggests/indicates [deeper meaning].'

    P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 P7 P10

文章大量使用 specific statistics 来 substantiate claims,如 'sales fell by more than 6%', '$1 menus', 'around 20% of all sales', 'average calorie-count fell 6% and revenue increased 3%'。

信号词 fell by increased by more than around accounts for up from

使用时要 contextualize,比如 'sales fell 6%' 要说明 compared to what。 [Trend/claim] + specific percentage/number + (comparison baseline) + source attribution if applicable. This figure/data demonstrates/reflects [significance].'

    P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P8

文章系统运用 contrast 来 highlight industry dynamics:fast-food vs full-service restaurants 的 recession performance,McDonald's success vs Burger King struggles, trading down vs eating at home,super-size strategy vs more buys approach。这种 juxtaposition 特别明显在 第3段 和 第4段 的 'but not all' transition 中。通过 contrasting winners and losers、past and present strategies,文章展示了 industry 的 complexity 和 differentiation,让 readers 理解 success factors 和 competitive landscape。

信号词 but while whereas however in contrast on the other hand better than instead of

    仿写: 思考:什么 entities/strategies/periods 值得比较? 构建对比时用 parallel structures,如 'While A does X, B does Y' 或 'A succeeded because..., but B failed because...'。 [Entity A] + [outcome/characteristic] + contrast marker (but/while/whereas/however) + [Entity B] + [different outcome]. This contrast reveals/demonstrates [insight].'

    P9

文章在关键 transition points 使用 rhetorical questions 来 guide readers' attention,最显著的是 第9段 开头的 'But what about those growing waistlines?'。 这种 device 让文章的 logical flow 更 engaging,同时 signal 即将讨论的 new dimension of the issue。

But what about What about But how So what does this mean Why Can

What logical question 会自然 arise?使用时机:introducing new topic、challenging assumptions、transitioning sections。 [Establishing context/previous point] + But what about [concern/alternative]? + [Answer/exploration follows].

    P6 P7 P8 P9 P10 P11

文章使用 neutral, factual language 来 present industry actions 和 regulatory developments,如 'Companies are trying to get customers to buy new items', 'America's health-reform bill requires restaurant chains to put calorie-content'。这种 objective tone 避免 editorial judgment,让 facts speak for themselves。特别是描述 controversial issues 如 obesity 和 regulation 时,作者 maintain impartiality, presenting both industry efforts 和 regulatory pressures without obvious bias,这是 quality journalism 的 hallmark。

信号词 are trying to are introducing requires found that suggests indicates

用 'companies are introducing' 而非 'companies smartly introduce'。 模版:'[Subject] + neutral verb (announces/implements/reports/shows) + [factual information] + supporting details.

    P1
These are things fast-food firms have learnt to cope with. But not perhaps for much longer.

But not perhaps for much longer But However Yet Nevertheless Nonetheless Still

But not perhaps for much longer'这个 phrase 暗示:他们现有的 coping strategies 即将 inadequate。 对 main idea 的 contribution 是:establish 文章的 urgency 和 necessity for change,为后文详述的 regulatory pressure 和 strategic shifts 做 foreshadowing。

    P2
When consumers need to cut spending, the logic goes, cheap meals like Big Macs and Whoppers become even more attractive.

委婉表达 the logic goes supposedly in theory it is said allegedly presumably ostensibly

'The logic goes'这个 phrasing 暗示:作者对'fast food 是 recession-proof'这个 claim 持 reserved attitude。它不是 stating as fact,而是 presenting as received wisdom。 But not all fast-food companies have been as fortunate'做 preparation。对 article theme 的 value 是:establish 作者的 analytical stance—不盲目 accept industry mythology,而要 examine real-world complexity。

    P5
Some fast-food companies also sacrificed their own profits by trying to give customers better value.

Some Many Certain A few Several A number of Part of

用'Some'而非'Fast-food companies'暗示:sacrificing profits 的 strategy 只是 partial response,且结果 mixed。这个 limitation 预示后文会 detail 这个 approach 的 problems(如 franchisee lawsuit)。对 main thesis 的 contribution 是:show that industry's recession response 不是 uniformly successful, supporting 文章关于 need for strategy rethinking 的 argument。

    P5
In May a judge ruled in favour of Burger King. Nevertheless, the company may still be cursing its decision to promote cheap choices over more expensive ones because items on its 'value menu' now account for around 20% of all sales, up from 12% last October.

Nevertheless Nonetheless Even so All the same In spite of this Despite this That being said

'Nevertheless'后的 content 暗示:虽然 Burger King won the lawsuit,但 legal victory is hollow。'Cursing its decision'和 sales data(20% vs 12%)reveal 真正的 problem—公司 trapped in low-margin business model。

    P9
By providing healthy options, like salads and low-calorie sandwiches, they have at least given the impression of doing something about helping to fight obesity.

委婉表达 at least given the impression given the impression appeared to seemed to created the perception gave the appearance of projected an image of

'At least given the impression'暗示:健康选项的 primary function 是 regulatory avoidance 而非 obesity reduction。 But customers cannot be forced to order salads instead of fries'来 reinforce。对 article's argument 的 value 是:expose the limits of industry's current approach, supporting 文章关于 future regulation inevitability 的 prediction(第10段)。它 shows voluntary measures 可能 insufficient。

    P10
a sign, it is said, that menu-labelling could favour chains that have more healthy offerings.

委婉表达 it is said reportedly allegedly according to some it is claimed it is suggested some argue

'It is said'这个 attribution 暗示:calorie-labeling 有利于 healthier chains 这个 conclusion 是 interpretation 而非 proven fact。作者 careful not to overstate the Starbucks study's implications。对 article's thesis 的 function 是:present menu-labeling as potential game-changer while maintaining analytical rigor。它 supports 文章关于 regulatory pressure 将 reshape industry 的 prediction,但 acknowledge uncertainty about exact effects。

    P11
Walt Riker of McDonald's claims the change it has made in its menu means it offers more healthy items than it did a few years ago.

紧接着提到 Happy Meals toy ban proposal 进一步 undercut McDonald's claim, showing public and legislators 仍然 see the chain as promoting unhealthy food to children。对 article conclusion 的 contribution 是:demonstrate that despite industry's proclaimed efforts,'there is a lot more left to do',reinforcing 文章关于持续 pressure 和 need for genuine innovation 的 message。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

News reports 通常会在 opening 就 establish tone,如果 author 想要 criticize 或者 praise,往往会在 first paragraph 就 show bias。但这里作者只是 state the challenges(压力和适应),没有 emotional language,说明是 neutral stance。

作者引用了 critics, health experts, analysts like David Palmer, Sara Senatore,以及 company officials like Walt Riker。这种 multi-source approach 表明作者在 gather comprehensive information 而非 push a single agenda。

当 news reports 涉及 controversial topics like fast food and health, author's word choice 会 reveal attitude。 这说明作者在 maintain distance from the subject。

如果 author 想 advocate for change,会用 'must', 'should', 'urgent' 等 imperative language。这里只是说 'suggests there is a lot more left to do',是 neutral observation of current state,不是 personal advocacy。这种 understated conclusion 符合 objective journalism standards。

  5. Combining all elements—neutral opening, balanced perspectives, restrained language, 和 factual conclusion—可以确定这是 objective reporting with journalistic integrity。作者的 concern about health 是 implicit and measured,体现在 selecting 这个 topic 和 including regulatory pressures,但没有 cross the line into advocacy。这种 subtle concern within objectivity 是 sophisticated journalism 的特点。

  • face P1

动词 'face' 是 neutral description of challenges,不带 emotional judgment。它表示 acknowledge the existence of problems 而不 imply success or failure,这是 objective reporting 的 typical marker。相比 'suffer from' 或 'overcome','face' 保持了 factual distance。

同类词 cope with adapt to deal with encounter confront

  • critics even complain P1

引用 external criticism 而不 personally endorse it 是 objectivity 的体现。'Critics even complain' 这个结构 attributes the opinion to others,作者在 report what critics say 而非 making the criticism himself。这种 attribution 是 balanced journalism 的 fundamental technique。

同类词 critics complain experts criticise some argue analysts say observers note

  • proved true P2

使用 factual language like 'proved true' 表示作者在 report empirical results 而非 personal beliefs。这种 evidence-based language 是 objective analysis 的 cornerstone,因为它 grounds statements in observable reality 而非 subjective opinion。

同类词 turned out demonstrated showed revealed indicated

  • says P4

频繁使用 attribution verb 'says' 配合 expert sources(如 'David Palmer, an analyst at UBS, says')是 journalistic objectivity 的 hallmark。作者通过 quoting experts 来 provide analysis 而非 insert personal views,这 maintains professional distance。

同类词 states notes reports explains according to

  • cleverly avoided P9

'Cleverly avoided' 这个 phrase 很微妙,它 acknowledges industry's strategic success 但也 subtly implies 可能有 deeper issues being sidestepped。这种 nuanced language 显示 author 既 recognize business acumen 又 aware of underlying concerns,体现了 sophisticated objectivity。

同类词 strategically tactically managed to successfully navigated

  • suggests there is a lot more left to do P11

使用 tentative language like 'suggests' 而非 definitive statements 是 maintaining objectivity 的关键。同时 'a lot more left to do' 表达了 mild concern about current efforts 的 inadequacy,但仍然是 observational 而非 prescriptive。

同类词 suggests indicates implies points to shows that

这篇文章的 title 是 'THE CHANGES FACING FAST FOOD',直接指向 ongoing changes 而非 viewpoint。 这是典型的 news reporting style, presenting current developments 而非 arguing a position(议论文会说 'Fast food should be banned')或 explaining concepts(说明文会说 'What is fast food')。

文章充满了 concrete evidence:'In 2009 sales at full-service restaurants in America fell by more than 6%'(第3段),'McDonald's increased spending on advertising by more than 7% last year'(第4段),'items on its value menu now account for around 20% of sales, up from 12% last October'(第5段)。还有 specific company actions 比如 'KFC launched a chicken sandwich that costs around $5' 和 'Burger King introduced barbecue pork ribs at $7'(第6段)。

文章多次 quote external sources:'David Palmer, an analyst at UBS, says...'(第4段),'says Sara Senatore of Bernstein, a research firm'(第8段),'says Rick Carucci, the chief financial officer of Yum! Brands'(第8段),'Walt Riker of McDonald's claims...'(第11段)。这些 attributed statements 表明 journalist 在 gathering perspectives 而非 expressing personal views。Tone 始终是 descriptive and analytical 而非 persuasive,即使提到 obesity concerns 也是 report what others say,不是 author's own argument。

  4. 文章采用 thematic progression tracking industry changes:首先 describe current pressures(第1段),然后 trace recession impact(第2段-5),接着 report new strategies companies are adopting(第6段-8),最后 address regulatory concerns(第9段-11)。这是 news feature 的 typical organization —— following a story's development across different aspects。不是 argument structure(thesis → supporting points → conclusion)也不是 classification structure(type A, type B, type C of fast food)。Each paragraph adds new information about the evolving situation 而非 building towards proving a point。

  5. This article exemplifies news reporting through its comprehensive coverage of fast-food industry changes:factual opening about current challenges(非观点性开篇),extensive data throughout('6%', '7%', '20%', '$1', '$5', '$7' 等大量具体数字),attributed perspectives from analysts and executives(Palmer, Senatore, Carucci, Riker 等多方声音),developmental structure following industry evolution from recession through strategic adaptation to regulatory concerns(按照时间和主题发展而非论证逻辑)。没有 thesis statement 需要 prove,没有 'In conclusion' 来 summarize an argument,也没有 'There are three types of' 来 classify and explain。
