The Blessing and Curse of the People Who Never Forget

For most of us, memory is a mess of blurred and faded pictures of our lives. As much as we would like to cling on to our past, even the saddest moments can be washed away with time.

Ask Nima Veiseh what he was doing for any day in the past 15 years, however, and he will give you the details of the weather, what he was wearing, or even what side of the train he was sitting on his journey to work. "My memory is like a library of video tapes, walk-throughs of every day of my life from waking to sleeping," he explains.

Veiseh can even put a date on when those tapes started recording: 15 December 2000, when he met his first girlfriend at his best friend's 16th birthday party. He had always had a good memory, but the thrill of young love seems to have shifted a gear in his mind: from now on, he would start recording his whole life in detail. "I could tell you everything about every day after that."

Needless to say, people like Veiseh are of great interest to neuroscientists hoping to understand the way the brain records our lives. A couple of recent papers have finally opened a window on these people's extraordinary minds. And such research might even suggest ways for us all to relive our past with greater clarity.

"Highly superior autobiographical memory" (or HSAM for short) first came to light in the early 2000s, with a young woman named Jill Price. Emailing the neuroscientist and memory researcher Jim McGaugh one day, she claimed that she could recall every day of her life since the age of 12. Could he help explain her experiences?

McGaugh invited her to his lab, and began to test her: he would give her a date and ask her to tell him about the world events on that day. True to her word, she was correct almost every time.

It didn't take long for magazines and documentary film-makers to come to understand her "total recall", and thanks to the subsequent media interest, a few dozen other subjects (including Veiseh) have since come forward and contacted the team at the University of California, Irvine.

Interestingly, their memories are highly self-centred: although they can remember "autobiographical" life events in extraordinary detail, they seem to be no better than average at recalling impersonal information, such as random(任意选取的) lists of words. Nor are they necessarily better at remembering a round of drinks, say. And although their memories are vast, they are still likely to suffer from "false memories". Clearly, there is no such thing as a "perfect" memory—their extraordinary minds are still using the same flawed tools that the rest of us rely on. The question is, how?

Lawrence Patihis at the University of Southern Mississippi recently studied around 20 people with HSAM and found that they scored particularly high on two measures: fantasy proneness(倾向) and absorption. Fantasy proneness could be considered a tendency to imagine and daydream, whereas absorption is the tendency to allow your mind to become fully absorbed in an activity—to pay complete attention to the sensations(感受) and the experiences. "I'm extremely sensitive to sounds, smells and visual detail," explains Nicole Donohue, who has taken part in many of these studies. "I definitely feel things more strongly than the average person."

The absorption helps them to establish strong foundations for recollection, says Patihis, and the fantasy proneness means that they revisit those memories again and again in the coming weeks and months. Each time this initial memory trace is "replayed", it becomes even stronger. In some ways, you probably go through that process after a big event like your wedding day—but the difference is that thanks to their other psychological tendencies, the HSAM subjects are doing it day in, day out, for the whole of their lives.

Not everyone with a tendency to fantasise will develop HSAM, though, so Patihis suggests that something must have caused them to think so much about their past. "Maybe some experience in their childhood meant that they became obsessed(着迷) with calendars and what happened to them," says Patihis.

The people with HSAM I've interviewed would certainly agree that it can be a mixed blessing. On the plus side, it allows you to relive the most transformative and enriching experiences. Veiseh, for instance, travelled a lot in his youth. In his spare time, he visited the local art galleries, and the paintings are now lodged deep in his autobiographical memories.

"Imagine being able to remember every painting, on every wall, in every gallery space, between nearly 40 countries," he says. "That's a big education in art by itself." With this comprehensive knowledge of the history of art, he has since become a professional painter.

Donohue, now a history teacher, agrees that it helped during certain parts of her education. "I can definitely remember what I learned on certain days at school. I could imagine what the teacher was saying or what it looked like in the book."

Not everyone with HSAM has experienced these benefits, however. Viewing the past in high definition can make it very difficult to get over pain and regret. "It can be very hard to forget embarrassing moments," says Donohue. "You feel the same emotions—it is just as raw, just as fresh… You can't turn off that stream of memories, no matter how hard you try." Veiseh agrees. "It is like having these open wounds—they are just a part of you," he says.

This means they often have to make a special effort to lay the past to rest. Bill, for instance, often gets painful "flashbacks", in which unwanted memories intrude into his consciousness, but overall he has chosen to see it as the best way of avoiding repeating the same mistakes. "Some people are absorbed in the past but not open to new memories, but that's not the case for me. I look forward to each day and experiencing something new."

这个 opening part 通过 contrast 普通人 memory 的 blurred and faded 特点和 Veiseh 这种能 recall every day in enormous detail 的 extraordinary ability, introduce 了 HSAM phenomenon 的存在,为后文的 scientific exploration 做 setup。

这个 section 通过 chronological narrative 讲述 HSAM 这个 scientific term 的 origin story,从 Jill Price 的 initial contact 到 McGaugh 的 lab testing,再到 subsequent media attention 带来 more subjects, establish 了这个 phenomenon 的 scientific legitimacy 和 research foundation。

说明文需要 establish credibility,这个 sense group 通过 narrating the discovery process 和 mentioning specific researchers 来 demonstrate 这不是 anecdotal evidence 而是 systematic scientific inquiry,为后文的 neurological explanation 提供 authoritative foundation。

这个 analytical section 通过 'Interestingly' 开启,systematically describe HSAM 的 paradoxical characteristics:memory 虽然 vast 但 highly self-centred,对 autobiographical events extraordinary 但对 impersonal information average,而且 still suffer from false memories,揭示这不是 'perfect memory' 而是 using the same flawed tools,为下文的 mechanism explanation 设置 puzzle。

说明文的 characteristic description section 需要 nuanced presentation,这个 sense group 通过 pointing out contradictions 和 limitations 来 refine reader's understanding, avoid oversimplification,同时用 rhetorical question 'how?'

这个 explanation section 用 Patihis 的 research findings 来 answer 'how' question, reveal 两个 key psychological traits:fantasy proneness 和 absorption。通过 Donohue 的 personal testimony 和 detailed mechanism description(absorption 建立 strong foundations, fantasy proneness 导致 constant replay,从而 strengthen memory trace),这部分 provide scientific account 解释 why these people develop HSAM。

这是说明文的 core explanatory section, fulfill 文章 subtitle 提到的 'neuroscientists are finally beginning to understand how they do it'。

这个 evaluation section 先用 'mixed blessing' 定调,然后 focus on positive side,通过 Veiseh 和 Donohue 的 concrete examples(art education, academic learning)demonstrate HSAM 如何 enrich life 和 facilitate professional development, present 这种 ability 的 transformative potential。

说明文在 explain mechanism 后需要 discuss implications,这个 sense group 通过 real-life applications 让 abstract concept 变得 relatable and meaningful, demonstrate why understanding HSAM matters,同时为下一个 sense group 的 negative aspects 做 contrast setup。

这个 contrasting section 用 'however' 开启,shift to negative aspects,通过 vivid descriptions('open wounds,' 'painful flashbacks,' 'raw and fresh emotions')convey emotional burden of HSAM。Bill 的 coping strategy 在 第16段 提供 nuanced conclusion, acknowledge 这种 ability 的 double-edged nature, ultimately present balanced perspective。

作为说明文的 final evaluation section,这个 sense group complete balanced assessment, prevent oversimplification by showing psychological costs。这种 nuanced treatment 体现 mature expository writing, acknowledge complexity 而不是 present one-sided view,给 readers comprehensive understanding of HSAM phenomenon。

这篇文章通过 contrast(普通人 vs. 特殊记忆者)在 第1段 和 第2段 快速建立了 the phenomenon of extraordinary memory 这个 central topic。

第8段 到 第11段 详细解释了 HSAM 的 characteristics(记忆特点)和 neurological mechanisms(心理机制)。说明文的 body paragraphs 会系统地 break down the phenomenon,这些段落的 topic sentences 构成了对主旨的 supporting elaboration。

第12段 到 第16段 系统讨论了 HSAM 的 mixed blessing:benefits(relive experiences, educational advantages)和 burdens(difficulty getting over pain, emotional rawness)。

  5. 说明文的主旨必须反映文章的 complete scope:不仅要说明 what(HSAM phenomenon),还要涵盖 how(neurological mechanisms)和 so what(psychological implications)。

首先,从 contextual contrast 看,cling on to our past 和 washed away 形成鲜明对立,一个是想要保持,一个是被冲走消失。其次,从 phrase structure 看,on to 的介词组合暗示一种紧密的 attachment 或 connection。

最后,从 functional outcome 看,正是因为 paintings 被牢固地 lodged in memory,Veiseh 才能 recall them at will,才能在 art education 和 career 中受益。

第二条线索从 spatial metaphor 入手,into consciousness 暗示 boundary crossing 和 violation of privacy。

    P2 P16

作者用 "a library of video tapes" 这个 metaphor 来形容 Veiseh 的 memory system,将抽象的 autobiographical memory 比作具体的 video library。

信号词 like as resemble similar to comparable to akin to as if just as

比如要解释 cloud computing,可以说 "像 electricity grid 一样,你不需要 own 发电厂,只需要 plug in 就能 access resources"。

这些 real-life cases 让文章的 main thesis 更加 convincing 和 relatable。

信号词 for instance for example such as take consider like including namely say

1) Does it clearly demonstrate the concept? 2) Will readers find it relatable or interesting? 3) Does it add new information beyond previous examples? 可以用 "For instance"、"Take [name] as an example" 这样的 transitions 来引入。Vary your examples 来展示 concept 的 breadth。 [General statement]. For instance, [specific person/case] demonstrates this when [concrete details]. Another example is [second case], where [different aspect]."

    P5

文章明确给出 "Highly superior autobiographical memory (or HSAM for short)" 这个 technical term 的 definition,并用 parenthetical abbreviation 来 facilitate 后续的 reference。 同时,通过 operational definition(描述 what HSAM people can do),文章让这个 specialized concept 更加 concrete 和 understandable。Definition 作为 explanatory writing 的 foundation,帮助读者 distinguish HSAM from ordinary good memory。

信号词 is refers to means is defined as or known as called termed is a type of

仿写: 写 definition 时遵循 formula:"[Term] is [category] that [distinguishing features]"。然后可以 add operational definition:"People with [term] can [observable behaviors]"。 Example: "Artificial General Intelligence (or AGI) is a type of AI system that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across diverse tasks at a human-level capacity, unlike narrow AI which excels only in specific domains."

    P1 P8

文章在 第8段 系统地 compare HSAM individuals with average people,指出他们虽然在 autobiographical memory 上 superior,但在 impersonal information recall 上 "no better than average"。 在 第1段 开头,文章也 implicitly contrast "most of us" 的 blurred memories 和后面 HSAM subjects 的 vivid recall。这些 comparisons 帮助 frame HSAM as a unique phenomenon,让读者 appreciate its distinctiveness。

信号词 whereas while in contrast compared to unlike rather than on the other hand however but than no better than different from

仿写: 写 comparison 时要 identify clear points of contrast。Use explicit markers: "whereas", "while", "in contrast", "compared to", "unlike"。可以用 parallel structure 来增强 clarity:"A is X, whereas B is Y"。同时确保 comparison 是 meaningful 和 relevant to your main point。Example: "While traditional computers process information sequentially, quantum computers can evaluate multiple possibilities simultaneously, leading to exponentially faster problem-solving for certain tasks." 仿写模版:"Although/While [对象A] [特征X], [对象B] [对比特征Y]. In contrast to [A], [B] [further distinction]."

    P2 P3 P5 P9 P13

文章使用 specific numbers 来 establish precision 和 credibility:"15 December 2000" 标记 Veiseh memory recording 的 exact starting point,"16th birthday party" 提供 concrete context,"past 15 years" 界定 time span,"the age of 12" 说明 Price 的 memory 起点,"around 20 people" 指明 research sample size,"nearly 40 countries" 量化 Veiseh 的 travel experience。

信号词 approximately around nearly over about roughly more than up to as many as percent years days

仿写: 使用 numbers 时要 ensure they serve a clear purpose。Don't just throw in random statistics。Ask: Does this number clarify scale? Does it provide essential context? Does it support my main point? 可以 combine numbers with context: "Over the past 15 years" (time frame), "around 20 people" (sample size), "nearly 40 countries" (scope). Use specific dates 来 mark significant events。仿写模版:"Over the past [数字] [时间单位], researchers studied [数字] [对象], discovering that [数字/百分比] [关键发现]. For instance, on [具体日期], [具体事件]."

    P2 P3 P9 P13 P14 P15 P16

文章 extensively quote HSAM subjects 的 first-person accounts:Veiseh 的 "My memory is like a library...",Donohue 的 "I'm extremely sensitive to sounds...",Bill 的 reflection on flashbacks。这些 direct quotations 提供了 authentic、personal perspectives,让读者 hear directly from 经历这种 condition 的人。 文章还 reference scientific research (Patihis's study, McGaugh's work),建立 academic credibility 和 theoretical foundation。

信号词 explains says notes according to states claims argues observes writes reports as [name] puts it

仿写: 选择 quotes 时 ask: Does this quote say something better than I could paraphrase? Does it add unique perspective or evidence? 要 integrate quotes smoothly:use introductory phrases ("explains", "notes", "according to") + quote + your analysis of what it means。对于 longer quotes,考虑 breaking them up with your commentary。Always attribute sources clearly。 This [observation/finding] suggests that [你的分析和联系]."

    P8 P10 P11

这个 explanatory passage 不只是 restate research results,而是 break down the mechanism,让读者 understand the causal chain。文章还在 第8段 clarify what HSAM is NOT,通过 explaining limitations 来 prevent misunderstanding。

信号词 this means that in other words that is to say in essence put simply what this suggests is the significance is to put it another way essentially

仿写: 写 interpretation 时要 build on 已经 established 的 facts or concepts。Use phrases like "This means that", "In other words", "The significance of this is"。Break down complex processes into steps。Explain not just what happens, but why or how it works。可以用 analogies 或 everyday language 来 make technical explanations accessible。 This works because [机制解释]. In other words, [换个角度重述]. The significance is that [更深层含义或影响]."

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
As much as we would like to cling on to our past, even the saddest moments can be washed away with time.

让步类 even even though even if although though while despite

    P3
He had always had a good memory, but the thrill of young love seems to have shifted a gear in his mind

转折类 but however yet nevertheless nonetheless still though

    P4
And such research might even suggest ways for us all to relive our past with greater clarity.

让步类 even even suggest might even could even perhaps even possibly even maybe even

    表面意思是研究可能 suggest ways 帮助普通人,但 subtext 是:这项研究不仅有 theoretical value(理解 HSAM mechanism),还有 practical application(improve 普通人的 memory)。

    P8
although they can remember 'autobiographical' life events in extraordinary detail, they seem to be no better than average at recalling impersonal information

让步类 although though even though while whereas despite the fact that in spite of

    P8
Clearly, there is no such thing as a 'perfect' memory—their extraordinary minds are still using the same flawed tools that the rest of us rely on.

Clearly clearly obviously evidently apparently plainly undoubtedly

这对 main idea crucial,因为它 reframe HSAM 从'superpower'到'interesting variation of normal memory',同时 raise 核心问题'The question is, how?',为后文的 mechanism explanation 做 transition。

    P10
but the difference is that thanks to their other psychological tendencies, the HSAM subjects are doing it day in, day out, for the whole of their lives.

因果类 thanks to due to because of owing to as a result of on account of by virtue of

对 main idea 的 value 是:provide 科学解释 how HSAM works,从 psychological traits 到 neurological outcome 建立 causal pathway。

    P11
Not everyone with a tendency to fantasise will develop HSAM, though, so Patihis suggests that something must have caused them to think so much about their past.

转折类 though although however yet but still nevertheless

    P12
The people with HSAM I've interviewed would certainly agree that it can be a mixed blessing.

情态词 certainly definitely surely indeed undoubtedly without doubt no doubt

对 main idea 的 significance 是:shift article focus 从 scientific mechanism 到 human experience,展示 HSAM 的 real-world impact,让 phenomenon 更 relatable 同时 reveal its complexity。

    P15
Not everyone with HSAM has experienced these benefits, however.

转折类 however but yet nevertheless nonetheless on the other hand conversely

Subtext 是:article 现在要 pivot 到 psychological burden,给读者一个 more complete understanding。

    P16
Bill, for instance, often gets painful 'flashbacks', in which unwanted memories intrude into his consciousness, but overall he has chosen to see it as the best way of avoiding repeating the same mistakes.

转折类 but yet however nevertheless nonetheless still though

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

  • extraordinary minds P4

同类词 extraordinary detail highly superior great interest enormous detail comprehensive knowledge

  • Interestingly P8

Notably Surprisingly Remarkably Curiously It is worth noting that

  • mixed blessing P12

HSAM "can be a mixed blessing",而作者选择用这句话作为 transition into the pros/cons section 的 pivot,这是作者在 deliberately 呼应全文的 balanced framing。"

同类词 blessing and curse on the plus side not everyone… has experienced these benefits, however can make it very difficult

  • Clearly, there is no such thing as a 'perfect' memory P8

这里作者没有引用任何人,而是直接说 "Clearly, there is no such thing as a perfect memory"——这是作者在主动 deflate 对 HSAM 的过度神化,体现了其 intellectually honest 和 critically balanced 的态度:即便对 HSAM 充满 appreciation,也不会 romanticize 或 overstate 其能力。

Clearly Obviously It is evident that There is no doubt that This shows that

这个 title 提到 'people who never forget',immediately signals 这是在 introduce 一类特殊群体。第1段 描述 'for most of us, memory is a mess',这是在 establish context 和 set up contrast,而不是 argue a position 或 report news。议论文会直接 state a claim,新闻报道会用 'yesterday' 或 'recently announced' 这类 time markers。

第2段 和 第3段 详细描述 Nima Veiseh 的 memory abilities,包括他能 recall 'the weather, what he was wearing' 这些 specific details。 这些不是用来 prove a point,而是用来 show readers what HSAM actually looks like in practice。议论文会用 examples 作为 supporting evidence,新闻会 focus on newsworthy individuals,而不是 representative cases。

第4段 提到 'neuroscientists hoping to understand' 和 'recent papers have opened a window',第9段 和 第10段 详细解释 research findings,包括 'fantasy proneness' 和 'absorption' 这些 technical terms。这些 scientific explanations 是为了 help readers understand how HSAM works,而不是为了 convince readers of a particular view。议论文会 cherry-pick research 来 support claims,新闻会 emphasize the novelty 和 impact of findings。

  4. 第12段 明确说 'it can be a mixed blessing',然后 第12段 到 第14段 讨论 positive aspects('relive transformative experiences', 'big education in art'),第15段 和 第16段 讨论 negative aspects('very hard to forget embarrassing moments', 'painful flashbacks')。这种 two-sided exploration 是为了 comprehensively explain what it's like to have HSAM,而不是 argue whether HSAM is good or bad。议论文会最终 favor one side,新闻会 focus on impact 和 implications。

  5. 这篇文章完整展现了说明文的 complete structure:introduce the phenomenon(超常记忆力),provide concrete examples(Veiseh, Price),explain the mechanism(fantasy proneness, absorption),explore implications(benefits and drawbacks)。全文没有 persuasive thesis,没有 time-sensitive news pegs,没有 call to action。 每个 section 都在 add layers of understanding,而不是 build toward a conclusion or deliver breaking information。
