'Anumeric' people: What happens when a language has no words for numbers?

Numbers do not exist in all cultures. There are numberless hunter-gatherers in Amazonia, living along branches of the world's largest river tree. Instead of using words for precise quantities, these people rely exclusively on terms similar to "a few" or "some." In contrast, our own lives are governed by numbers. As you read this, you are likely aware of what time it is, how old you are, your checking account balance, your weight and so on. The exact numbers we think with impact everything in our lives.

But, in a historical sense, number-conscious people like us are the unusual ones. For the bulk of our species' approximately 200,000-year lifespan, we had no means of precisely representing quantities. What's more, the 7,000 or so languages that exist today vary dramatically in how they utilize numbers.

Speakers of anumeric, or numberless, languages offer a window into how the invention of numbers reshaped the human experience. Cultures without numbers, or with only one or two precise numbers, include the Munduruku and Piraha in Amazonia. Researchers have also studied some adults in Nicaragua who were never taught number words. Without numbers, healthy human adults struggle to precisely distinguish and recall quantities as low as four. In an experiment, a researcher will place nuts into a can one at a time and then remove them one by one. The person watching is asked to signal when all the nuts have been removed. Responses suggest that anumeric people have some trouble keeping track of how many nuts remain in the can, even if there are only four or five in total.

This and many other experiments have led to a simple conclusion: When people do not have number words, they struggle to make quantitative distinctions that probably seem natural to someone like you or me. While only a small portion of the world's languages are anumeric or nearly anumeric, they demonstrate that number words are not a human universal.

It is worth stressing that these anumeric people are cognitively(在认知方面) normal, well-adapted to the surroundings they have dominated for centuries. As a child, I spent some time living with anumeric people, the Piraha who live along the banks of the black Maici River. Like other outsiders, I was continually impressed by their superior understanding of the ecology we shared. Yet numberless people struggle with tasks that require precise discrimination between quantities. Perhaps this should be unsurprising. After all, without counting, how can someone tell whether there are, say, seven or eight coconuts(椰子) in a tree? Such seemingly straightforward distinctions become blurry through numberless eyes.

This conclusion is echoed by work with anumeric children in industrialized societies. Prior to being spoon-fed number words, children can only approximately discriminate quantities beyond three. We must be handed the cognitive tools of numbers before we can consistently and easily recognize higher quantities. In fact, acquiring the exact meaning of number words is a painstaking process that takes children years. Initially, kids learn numbers much like they learn letters. They recognize that numbers are organized sequentially, but have little awareness of what each individual number means. With time, they start to understand that a given number represents a quantity greater by one than the number coming before it. This "successor principle" is part of the foundation of our numerical(数字的) cognition, but requires extensive practice to understand.

None of us, then, is really a "numbers person." We are not born to handle quantitative distinctions skillfully. In the absence of the cultural traditions that fill our lives with numbers from infancy, we would all struggle with even basic quantitative distinctions. Number words and their written forms transform our quantitative reasoning as they are introduced into our cognitive experience by our parents, peers and school teachers. The process seems so normal that we sometimes think of it as a natural part of growing up, but it is not. Human brains come equipped with certain quantitative instincts that are refined with age, but these instincts are very limited.

Compared with other mammals, our numerical instincts are not as remarkable as many assume. We even share some basic instinctual quantitative reasoning with distant non-mammalian relatives like birds. Indeed, work with some other species suggests they too can refine their quantitative thought if they are introduced to the cognitive power tools we call numbers.

So, how did we ever invent "unnatural" numbers in the first place? The answer is, literally, at your fingertips. The bulk of the world's languages use base-10, base-20 or base-5 number systems. That is, these smaller numbers are the basis of larger numbers. English is a base-10 or decimal(十进制的) language, as evidenced by words like 14("four" + "10") and 31 ("three" x "10" + "one"). We speak a decimal language because an ancestral tongue, proto-Indo-European, was decimally based. Proto-Indo-European was decimally oriented because, as in so many cultures, our ancestors' hands served as the gateway to the realization that "five fingers on one hand is the same as five fingers on the other." Such momentary thoughts were represented in words and passed down across generations. This is why the word "five" in many languages is derived from the word for "hand." Most number systems, then, are the by-product of two key factors: the human capacity for language and our inclination for focusing on our hands and fingers. This manual fixation—an indirect by-product of walking upright on two legs—has helped yield numbers in most cultures, but not all.

Cultures without numbers also offer insight into the cognitive influence of particular numeric traditions. Consider what time it is. Your day is ruled by minutes and seconds, but these concepts are not real in any physical sense and are nonexistent to numberless people. Minutes and seconds are the verbal and written representations of an uncommon base-60 number system used in ancient Mesopotamia. They reside in our minds, numerical artifacts(人工制品) that not all humans inherit conceptually.

Research on the language of numbers shows, more and more, that one of our species' key characteristics is tremendous linguistic(语言的) and cognitive diversity. If we are to truly understand how much our cognitive lives differ cross-culturally, we must continually explore the depths of our species' linguistic diversity.

这个 section 将 perspective 拉到 historical dimension,指出在 human species 的 200,000-year lifespan 中,number-conscious people 其实是 unusual ones,并强调现存 7,000 languages 在 number utilization 方面的 dramatic variation。

这个 contextual section 通过 provide historical and linguistic perspective 来 support main thesis,让 readers 理解 numerical cognition 的 cultural nature 不是 isolated case,而是有 deep historical roots 和 wide linguistic evidence 的 phenomenon。

    提供历史纵深
  3. 实证支撑:无数字文化的认知特征

这两个 paragraphs 通过 present specific research evidence 来 demonstrate anumeric people 的 cognitive characteristics。第3段 介绍 experimental findings, showing 这些 cultures(Munduruku, Piraha, Nicaraguan adults)在 distinguish quantities 方面的 struggles。第5段 则通过 author's personal experience 补充 qualitative observation, emphasizing 这些 people 虽然 cognitively normal 且 well-adapted,但在 precise quantitative tasks 上确实 struggle。

作为 expository text 的 evidence section,这个 unit 通过 combine experimental data 和 ethnographic observation 来 substantiate the claim, proving that numerical cognition 不是 innate ability,而是需要 cultural tools(number words)才能 develop 的 skill。

    展示认知差异
  4. 阶段总结:得出实验性结论

这个 transitional paragraph 对前面的 experiments 进行 synthesize,得出 simple conclusion:without number words, people struggle to make quantitative distinctions。同时 emphasize 虽然 anumeric languages 只占 small portion,但它们 demonstrate number words 不是 human universal。

作为 expository text 的 intermediate conclusion,这个 section consolidates previous evidence 并 explicitly state the implication, helping readers grasp the significance before moving to next stage of explanation(children's acquisition)。这种 periodic summarization 是 complex exposition 的 important structural element。

    提炼阶段性认识
  5. 平行证据:工业化社会儿童的数字习得

这个 section 通过 present research on anumeric children in industrialized societies 来 provide parallel evidence。指出 children 在被 taught number words 之前 only approximately discriminate quantities beyond three, acquiring exact meaning of number words 是 painstaking process,需要 years 来 understand successor principle 和 develop numerical cognition。

这个 section 通过 examine 另一个 population(children learning numbers)来 echo and reinforce 前面关于 anumeric adults 的 findings, demonstrating that numerical cognition 的 cultural transmission nature 不仅体现在 cross-cultural comparison,也体现在 developmental process within cultures。这种 converging evidence 大大 strengthens the main thesis。

    展示习得过程
  6. 综合论断:数字认知的文化本质

这两个 paragraphs 基于 all preceding evidence 来 articulate core argument。第7段 explicitly states none of us is born 'numbers person',our quantitative reasoning 是被 cultural traditions transform 的。第8段 进一步 extend 这个 argument,指出 even compared to other mammals, our numerical instincts 并不 remarkable,我们 share basic quantitative reasoning with distant relatives like birds。

作为 expository text 的 argumentative core,这个 section 将 all evidence synthesize into explicit thesis statement, clarifying that numerical cognition 完全是 culturally transmitted skill。这是从 'what'(phenomenon)和 'how'(evidence)到 'why'(interpretation)的 crucial transition。

    阐明核心论点
  7. 机制解析:数字系统的起源

这个 paragraph 回答 'how did we invent numbers' 的 question, explaining 大多数 languages use base-10, base-20, or base-5 systems because 我们的 ancestors used hands as counting tools。通过 trace proto-Indo-European 的 decimal nature 和 analyze etymology('five' from 'hand'),demonstrate number systems 是 human language capacity 和 manual fixation 这两个 factors 的 by-product。

这个 explanatory section 通过 reveal numbers 的 origin mechanism 来 further demonstrate 它们的 cultural nature。By showing that number systems 来自 specific physical and cultural practices(手指 counting),reinforces the idea that numerical cognition 不是 innate,而是 culturally constructed。

    解释起源路径
  8. 影响延伸:数字传统的认知塑造

这个 paragraph 通过 concrete example(minutes and seconds from Mesopotamian base-60 system)来 illustrate 特定 numeric traditions 对 cognition 的 influence。Emphasize 这些 concepts 'are not real in any physical sense' 而是 'numerical artifacts',not all humans inherit 它们 conceptually。

这个 exemplification section 通过 familiar yet revealing example 来 make abstract argument concrete, helping readers grasp how profoundly numeric traditions shape our cognitive experience。这种 'defamiliarization' technique 让 readers reconsider taken-for-granted concepts。

    例证认知差异
  9. 总结升华:呼应核心意义

这个 closing paragraph 将 discussion elevate 到 broader significance, emphasizing research on number language reveals humanity's 'tremendous linguistic and cognitive diversity'。Calls for continually exploring 'the depths of our species' linguistic diversity' 来 truly understand cross-cultural cognitive differences。

作为 expository text 的 conclusion,这个 section 不仅 summarize main points,更 importantly,它 contextualize 整个 discussion within broader theme of human diversity。这种 closing 将 specific topic(numbers)连接到 larger significance(understanding humanity),是 effective expository writing 的 hallmark。

让我们把这些 clues 串联起来。首先,作者用 or numberless 直接给出了 definition,这是最 straightforward 的线索。然后,通过 morphological breakdown,我们看到 'a-' prefix 表示 negation,'numeric' 指 numbers,构词法上支持了 'without numbers' 这个意思。最后,具体的 cultural examples(Munduruku、Piraha)和他们 struggle with quantities 的 behaviors 进一步 confirm 了这个 interpretation。三条线索从不同 angles 都指向同一个 conclusion。

    文本解释、构词拆解、例证验证三维互证
  • straightforward 简单明了的,直截了当的

我们从三个 perspectives 来 analyze。First,通过 blurry 这个 opposite 的词,我们 infer 出 straightforward 应该意味着 clear。Second,从 word structure 来看,straight + forward 的 literal meaning 就是 direct and uncomplicated。Third, seemingly 这个 modifier 和整个 sentence 的 logic 告诉我们,这是描述一种对某些人来说 appears simple 的 characteristic。All these clues converge on the same meaning。

    拆解组件、构建意象、抽象迁移
  • painstaking 费力的,需要极大耐心和努力的

让我们 synthesize 这些 evidence。First, takes children years 这个 time indicator 告诉我们这是个 long and difficult process。Second,从 word construction 看,pain + taking literally 指 'involving pain/effort'。Third,后面的 detailed description(initially, then, requires extensive practice)描绘了一个 complex, multi-stage learning process。所有这些 clues 一致指向:painstaking 描述的是一个 requiring great effort and careful attention 的 process。

    时间标记、词根情感、过程细节三重印证
  • equipped 配备,具备

综合分析:come equipped with 这个 collocation 中,with 引出的是 possession 的 object, suggesting equipped 表示 'having or possessing'。从 word family 角度,equipment 这个 familiar noun 帮助我们 connect to the meaning of 'providing with tools/resources'。从 paragraph logic 看,作者在对比 natural endowment 和 learned skills, equipped 描述的是那个 natural part。All evidence points to: equipped 表示 being naturally provided with or having from birth。

    搭配功能、词族迁移、论证角色三维定位
  • instinct 本能,天性

把这些 threads 编织在一起:'Come equipped with' 和 'refined with age' 说明 instincts 是 naturally possessed and develop naturally。'Share with birds' 这个 cross-species comparison 强烈暗示 biological and innate nature。'Instincts vs. cultural traditions' 这个 dichotomy 明确地把 instincts 定位为 internal, natural abilities as opposed to external, learned knowledge。三条线索从不同 dimensions confirm:instincts 是指 inborn, natural abilities or tendencies。

    起源判定、跨种对比、二元对立定位
  • inclination 倾向,爱好

综合这些 evidence:parallel structure with 'capacity for language' 告诉我们 inclination 是 another human characteristic。Collocation with 'for focusing' reveals 它描述的是 a tendency towards a specific behavior。最关键的是,作者用 'manual fixation' 来 refer back to this inclination, providing a near-synonym。Putting these together:inclination 表示 a natural tendency, preference, or disposition towards something。

7 处修辞手法与仿写

每处修辞给出它在本文的具体用法、同类信号词清单与一份可直接套用的 写作仿写建议——读完能认,也能写。

  • 举例子

    P3 P5

文章通过 Munduruku 和 Piraha 这两个 Amazonian tribes 作为 concrete examples,还有 Nicaragua 的一些 adults 作为补充案例,来 demonstrate 无数字语言文化的 cognitive characteristics。这些 specific instances 让抽象的 anumeric concept 变得 tangible and credible, directly support 文章关于 numbers 不是 human universal 的 main argument,增强了 persuasiveness。

信号词 include such as for example for instance like take...as an example consider cases like instances of

仿写: 写作时问自己:我的 general statement 需要哪些 concrete instances 来 support?选择 examples 时要考虑 representativeness 和 diversity。模版:"主题句 + Cultures/People/Cases like X and Y + 具体表现 + This demonstrates that..." 比如:"Many species show tool-use abilities. Chimpanzees in Tanzania use sticks to extract termites, while New Caledonian crows fashion hooks from twigs. These examples demonstrate that tool use extends beyond humans."

  • 列数字

    P1 P2 P3 P9 P10

文章使用了大量 precise numbers:200,000-year lifespan、7,000 languages、quantities like four/five、base-10/base-20/base-5 systems、base-60 system 等。这些 numerical data 不仅 quantify 人类语言和认知的 diversity,更 ironically highlight 了 numbers 本身的 cultural specificity。Precise figures 让 argument 更 authoritative, especially when discussing 人类历史的 timeline 和语言系统的 variety。

信号词 approximately about nearly over more than up to as many as percent ratio

仿写: 思考:哪些 aspects 可以被 quantified?数字是否 accurate and verifiable?模版:"主题 + specific number + unit/context + significance" 比如:"Human DNA contains approximately 3 billion base pairs, a complexity that took scientists over 10 years to fully sequence. This massive scale explains why genetic research requires such computational power." 注意 combine numbers with context 来 reveal meaning。

  • 作比较

    P1 P2 P5 P8

文章 systematically contrasts anumeric cultures 和 number-conscious societies:"our own lives are governed by numbers" versus "rely exclusively on terms similar to 'a few'";"cognitively normal" anumeric people versus our assumption of numerical superiority;还有 humans 和 other mammals/birds 在 numerical instincts 方面的 comparison。这些 comparisons highlight the cultural relativity of numbers, challenge readers' assumptions about numerical cognition being innate, directly support 文章关于 cognitive diversity 的 central thesis。

信号词 in contrast while whereas unlike compared with on the other hand conversely however but yet rather than

仿写: 问自己:What two things illuminate each other through contrast? 确保 comparison 有 clear basis 和 meaningful insight。模版:"A exhibits X, while/whereas B shows Y. This contrast reveals..." 或 "Unlike A which..., B demonstrates..." 例如:"Traditional libraries organize books by subject, while digital databases use keyword algorithms. This shift reveals how information retrieval has moved from categorical thinking to associative search patterns."

  • 作诠释

    P3 P6 P9

文章对 key concepts 进行 detailed explanation:anumeric 被 defined 和 elaborated as "numberless" with specific examples;"successor principle" 被 explained as understanding that each number represents quantity greater by one;base-10 system 通过 "14 = four + 10" 这样的 breakdown 来 clarify。这些 explanations 确保 readers with different backgrounds 都能 grasp technical terms,是 expository writing 的 essential component, make complex linguistic concepts accessible。

信号词 or that is in other words namely specifically this means refers to defined as known as called

仿写: 识别哪些 terms 对 target audience 可能 unfamiliar 或 ambiguous。Explanation 策略:provide synonyms、break into components、give contextual usage。模版:"X refers to/means... That is, ... In other words, ..." 例如:"Photosynthesis refers to how plants convert light into energy. That is, chlorophyll in leaves captures sunlight and uses it to transform carbon dioxide and water into glucose. In other words, plants literally eat light."

  • 引资料

    P3 P4 P6 P8 P11

文章 references research findings:"experiments have led to a simple conclusion"、"This conclusion is echoed by work with anumeric children"、"work with some other species suggests"、"Research on the language of numbers shows"。这些 citations of studies 和 research consensus 建立了 scientific authority, show that claims are not mere speculation but based on empirical evidence。Though 没有 specific citations, the repeated reference to "research"、"experiments"、"work" establishes the article's grounding in academic inquiry。

信号词 research studies experiments work evidence according to suggests shows demonstrates found discovered scholars

仿写: 思考:哪些 claims need external validation?选择 authoritative、relevant sources。Integration 策略:summarize findings rather than just name-drop。模版:"Research/Studies/Evidence shows/suggests/demonstrates that... According to..., ... As X found/discovered, ..." 例如:"Studies on sleep deprivation show that even one night of poor sleep impairs cognitive function. According to neuroscientists at Berkeley, sleep-deprived brains struggle with memory formation and emotional regulation."

  • 打比方

    P6 P9 P10

"hands served as the gateway to the realization" 这个 metaphor 把 hands 比作 gateway, vividly illustrates how physical anatomy became the entry point for numerical thinking。"manual fixation" 和 "numerical artifacts" 也是 figurative expressions。还有 "spoon-fed number words" 形象地 describes passive learning。这些 metaphors make abstract cognitive processes more concrete and relatable, add vividness to scientific exposition。

信号词 like as served as acts as resembles similar to analogous to compared to metaphorically

仿写: 寻找 abstract concepts that would benefit from concrete imagery。问:What does this resemble? 选择 familiar domains 来 explain unfamiliar ones。模版:"A is/serves as the B of C" 或 "A acts like B" 例如:"DNA serves as the blueprint for life, encoding instructions much like an architect's plans specify how to construct a building. Each gene acts like a chapter in this biological instruction manual."

  • 下定义

    P3 P9

文章 explicitly defines key terms:"anumeric, or numberless, languages";"base-10, base-20 or base-5 number systems" followed by "That is, these smaller numbers are the basis of larger numbers";"successor principle" with its explanation。这些 formal definitions 建立 shared vocabulary, ensure precision in discussion,是说明文的 foundational technique。Clear definitions prevent misunderstanding and establish the conceptual framework for the entire article。

信号词 or refers to is defined as means that is in other words known as called termed

仿写: 识别哪些 core terms require explicit definition。Definition structure:Term + category + distinguishing features。模版:"X is/refers to Y that Z" 或 "X, or Y, is..." 例如:"Biodiversity refers to the variety of life forms within a given ecosystem. That is, it encompasses the number of different species, their genetic variation, and the complexity of their interactions. In other words, biodiversity measures how rich and varied life is in a particular area."

IMPLIED MEANING · 言外之意

5 处话里有话

作者没有明说、但靠信号词传递出来的态度与暗示——每处给出原文片段、信号词类型与解读。

  • 数字文化的历史罕见性

    P2
In contrast, our own lives are governed by numbers... But, in a historical sense, number-conscious people like us are the unusual ones.

对比类 unusual in contrast however but yet while although

作者通过 'unusual' 这个词 convey 一个 counterintuitive message:虽然我们 take numbers for granted,但从 human history 的 perspective 来看,我们这些 number-conscious people 才是 anomaly。这个 implicature 对文章 thesis 至关重要,因为它 establishes 数字并非 human universal,而是 cultural invention。通过 positioning modern numerical culture as the exception rather than the norm,作者为后续 argument 奠定基础:numerical cognition is culturally constructed,不是 innate ability。这种 rhetorical strategy makes readers question 他们关于 numbers 的 fundamental assumptions。

  • 认知能力与数字能力的分离

    P5
It is worth stressing that these anumeric people are cognitively normal, well-adapted to the surroundings they have dominated for centuries.

情态词 worth stressing it is important to note notably significantly crucially it should be emphasized bear in mind

作者通过 'worth stressing' explicitly address 一个 potential misinterpretation:读者可能 误以为 anumeric people 的数字困难 indicates cognitive deficiency。这个 implicature 对文章 argument 极其重要,因为它 separates biological capacity from cultural tools。作者 implicitly argues:lacking number words 不意味 intellectual inferiority,而是 demonstrates 认知能力 depends on cultural scaffolding。这强化了 central thesis:numerical cognition is not innate but culturally transmitted。通过 preemptively defending anumeric people's cognitive normalcy,作者 reinforces 数字系统是 learned cultural tool 而非 natural endowment 的观点。

  • 数字认知的习得本质

    P7
None of us, then, is really a 'numbers person.' We are not born to handle quantitative distinctions skillfully.

模糊限制语 None of us none of us not really we are not born to in the absence of not all no one naturally

通过 'None of us is really a numbers person',作者 convey 一个 provocative implicature:我们普遍认为的 mathematical aptitude 其实是 cultural conditioning 的结果,而非 innate talent。这个 implicature 直接 serves the thesis,因为它 democratizes numerical ability —— 每个人都是通过 cultural transmission 获得数字能力的。言外之意是:那些 struggling with math 的人 aren't lacking natural ability;他们只是 haven't received adequate cultural tools。这 challenges deficit models of cognition 并 reinforces 核心论点:numerical thinking is entirely a product of cultural learning, not biological endowment。这种 universal negation makes the argument more persuasive by implicating the reader directly。

  • 人类数字本能的相对平庸性

    P8
Compared with other mammals, our numerical instincts are not as remarkable as many assume. We even share some basic instinctual quantitative reasoning with distant non-mammalian relatives like birds.

委婉表达 not as remarkable as many assume not as remarkable as not particularly less impressive than not especially hardly unique not so special

作者通过 'not as remarkable as many assume' 传递一个 humbling implicature:人类的 numerical instincts 并不 exceptional,甚至 birds 都 share similar basic quantitative reasoning。这个 implicature 对 thesis 的作用是 further diminish 数字能力的 innate component。如果连 basic numerical instincts 都不是 uniquely human,那么 sophisticated number systems 显然更是 cultural achievements。言外之意强化了 cultural tools (like number words) are what truly distinguish human quantitative cognition 的观点。通过 deflating human biological exceptionalism,作者 elevates the importance of cultural transmission,完美 supports 文章的 central argument about cognitive diversity 源于 linguistic and cultural differences。

  • 分钟秒钟的文化建构性

    P10
Your day is ruled by minutes and seconds, but these concepts are not real in any physical sense and are nonexistent to numberless people.

对比类 not real in any physical sense nonexistent to merely representations exist only in our minds conceptual artifacts not natural purely cultural

通过 'not real in any physical sense',作者 convey 一个 profound implicature:我们最 take for granted 的 temporal concepts (minutes, seconds) 其实是 inherited numerical artifacts from ancient Mesopotamia。言外之意是:我们的 entire experience of time is culturally mediated, not a direct perception of physical reality。这个 example powerfully illustrates the thesis about cognitive diversity,因为它 shows how profoundly different 有数字文化和无数字文化的人 experience the same physical world。对于 numberless people, minutes and seconds 字面意义上 don't exist in their cognition。这 demonstrates numbers 不仅 affect how we reason about quantity,更 fundamentally restructure 我们对 time、space、甚至 reality itself 的 experience,是 article's most striking evidence for cultural construction of cognition。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

  • cognitively normal P5

    这几个词用来强调anumeric people并非intellectually inferior,而是normal且well-adapted,体现作者没有贬低他们,反而带着respect去描述他们的能力。

    同类词 well-adapted superior understanding impressed

  • struggle P4

    这些词客观描述anumeric people在quantitative tasks上遇到的实际困难,是基于experiment data的objective reporting,而非对他们的negative judgment。

同类词 We are not born to we would all struggle

  • must continually explore P11

说明文的 title 'WHAT HAPPENS WHEN...' 直接 pose a question about a phenomenon,而议论文的 title 往往 express an opinion 或 make an argument,新闻报道的 title 则 report an event。Opening paragraph 介绍 'Numbers do not exist in all cultures' 这个 factual phenomenon,是在 present information 而非 argue a viewpoint。

  2. 信息递进性过渡词 P2 P3 P4

第2段 用 'What's more' 来 add information about language diversity,第3段 用 'Researchers have studied' 来 present evidence,第4段 用 'This and many other experiments' 来 draw conclusions。这些都是 explanatory functions,在 building understanding step by step。议论文会用 'on the contrary' 'critics argue' 来 present opposing views,新闻报道会用 'according to' 'officials said' 来 report sources。

  3. 实验描述配中性结论 P3 P4 P8

第3段 详细 describe 'a researcher will place nuts' 的 experiment process,第4段 说 'experiments have led to a simple conclusion',第8段 提到 'work with some other species suggests'。这些都在 presenting empirical evidence to explain the phenomenon,是 informative purpose。议论文虽然也 cite evidence,但目的是 to prove a thesis,会说 'this proves that we must',新闻报道则 report events 而非 explain underlying mechanisms。

  4. 客观陈述避免主张 P5 P7 P11

虽然 第5段 出现了 'As a child, I',但作者是在 sharing personal observation 来 illustrate the point,而非 expressing personal opinion。整篇文章 maintain 'researchers found' 'studies show' 'work suggests' 的 neutral reporting stance。议论文会明确 state 'I argue that' 'we should',新闻报道会保持 detached reporting 但 focus on recent events 而非 explaining phenomena。

  5. 本文的 title 问 'WHAT HAPPENS',opening 介绍 numberless cultures 这个 phenomenon, body 通过 experiments 和 research 来 explain how numbers affect cognition, evidence 用于 clarification 而非 argumentation, author 保持 neutral observer role 最后 conclude 要 'explore linguistic diversity'。所有 textual features 都 point to expository purpose:explaining the cognitive and cultural significance of numbers。
