"One 60-minute run can add seven hours to your life." This was a claim made by The Times last week. The claim was based on a new review of studies about the effects of running. The review concluded that on average runners live three years longer than non-runners and that running does more to extend life than any other form of exercise. But there's more to running than its health benefits. Research published in recent years has shown that running changes your brain and mind in some fascinating ways, from increasing your brain function to regulating your emotions. However, the precise effects vary according to whether you engage in short, fast running or long-distance running.

For example, in one study, researchers compared participants' ability to learn new words after several minutes of intense running and after 40 minutes of gentle running. Participants were able to learn 20 percent faster after the intense running and they showed a superior memory when tested again a week later.

In another study, researchers asked volunteers to jog for 30 minutes and then showed them clips from a sad movie. Participants who usually struggled to handle negative emotions were more intensely affected by the sad clips, just as you'd expect. But crucially, this was less so if they had completed the 30-minute jog. The researchers said moderate exercise appears to have helped those participants to be less vulnerable to the impact of the sad movie.

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 precise effects brain and mind

What does the passage say determines the precise effects of running on the brain and mind?

    • A The number of years that running adds to a person's life.
    • B Whether a person is a runner or a non-runner.
    • C Whether the running is short and fast or long-distance.
    • D How much running exceeds every other form of exercise.
    • E The age at which a person begins running.
    • F The researcher's method of measuring brain function.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:C

    原文用 whether ... or ...

What did the participants demonstrate after intense running in the word-learning study?

    • A They learned new words 20 percent faster after gentle running.
    • B They showed superior memory immediately after a 40-minute run.
    • C They learned words more slowly but remembered them for a longer time.
    • D They learned new words 20 percent faster and had better memory a week later.
    • E They performed best when both running sessions lasted 40 minutes.
    • F They became less vulnerable to negative emotions.

30-minute jog handling negative emotions

How did a 30-minute jog affect participants who usually had difficulty handling negative emotions?

    • A It made them more intensely affected by the sad clips.
    • B It completely prevented them from feeling negative emotions.
    • C It enabled them to learn new words 20 percent faster.
    • D It showed that they were no longer affected by sad movies.
    • E It made them less vulnerable to the impact of the sad movie.
    • F It affected only participants who could already handle negative emotions well.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:E

原文先说明这类 participants 通常会 be more intensely affected,随后通过 But crucially 指出完成 jog 后这种影响 less so,并由 researchers 概括为 less vulnerable。正确项准确呈现了从较易受影响到较不易受影响的变化。障碍在于选项没有照抄 less so,而是采用 impact of the sad movie 的完整表达,要求考生整合前后两句。

这个意群通过 a claim 引入 running 这个 topic,先提到 extend life 的 health benefits,然后用 but there's more to 进行 transition,强调 running 不仅有 physical benefits,还能 change your brain and mind,产生 cognitive and emotional effects,最后点明 effects vary 取决于 running type

作为 expository writing 的 introduction part,这个意群通过 general statement 建立了文章的 framework,用 health claim 作为 hook 吸引 attention,然后通过 however 引出 main focus 即 cognitive and emotional benefits,并为后文的 specific examples 做好 logical preparation

    总领全文内容
  2. 例证短时高强度跑步的认知增益

这个意群用 for example 明确标记 exemplification,通过 one study 提供 concrete evidence,对比 intense running 和 gentle running 对 learning new words 的 effect,用 specific data(20 percent faster)和 time frame(a week later)来 demonstrate 短时高强度跑步的 cognitive benefits,特别是在 learning and memory 方面的 enhancement

作为 body paragraph 的第一个 supporting section,这个意群通过 empirical research 将前文提到的 brain function 概念 concretize,用 comparative study design 和 quantitative results 增强 persuasiveness,同时呼应了意群1中 effects vary 的观点,开始 elaborate 不同 running types 的 specific impacts

    例证认知益处
  3. 例证中等强度跑步的情绪调节作用

这个意群用 in another study 标记 parallel example, shift focus 到 emotional regulation 这个 different dimension。通过 experimental design(30-minute jog + sad movie clips)来 examine moderate exercise 对 negative emotions 的 impact,特别关注 vulnerable individuals,用 less intensely affected 和 less vulnerable 来 demonstrate jogging 的 protective effect against emotional distress

首段提到 running changes your brain and mind in fascinating ways,紧接着用 from...to... 结构列举 increasing brain function 和 regulating emotions 两个方面,这是典型的 multi-aspect enumeration,预示后文会分别展开 cognitive benefits 和 emotional benefits

  3. 中间段例证验证首段预告 P2 P3

第二段开头 For example 和第三段开头 In another study 都是 exemplification markers,表明文章用 empirical studies 来 support claims。第二段聚焦 intense running 对 learning 的影响,第三段聚焦 moderate jogging 对 emotional regulation 的作用,印证了首段预告的 effects vary according to intensity

  4. 三层整合形成完整主旨 P1 P2 P3

首段提出 running extends life 和 changes brain and mind,中间两段分别用 studies 证明了 cognitive enhancement(learn faster, superior memory)和 emotional regulation(less vulnerable),且强调 effects vary by intensity。主旨应涵盖 lifespan extension, cognitive and emotional benefits, 以及 variation by intensity

主旨信号词 extend life P1 changes your brain and mind P1 however P1 vary according to P1 For example P2 learn faster P2 In another study P3 less vulnerable P3 intense running P2 moderate exercise P3

MAIN IDEA · 主旨

不查词典,只用文中线索推出词义——每个词给出推断出的释义与 完整推理链。已收录进英语四级高频真题词集的单词可点击进入词条页。

  • regulate 调节、控制

让我们 connect all the clues together。首先,从 sentence structure 来看,regulating 和 increasing 形成 parallel structure,暗示它也是一种 positive effect。然后,第3段 的 specific experiment 展示了 running 如何帮助人们 better handle negative emotions,让他们 less vulnerable to sad stimuli。最后,morphological analysis 告诉我们 regulate 和 regular 有 shared root,与 order 和 control 的概念相关。综合这三条 clues,我们可以得出:regulate 指的是对某事物(这里是 emotions)进行 systematic control 或 management,使其保持在 appropriate level,不会过于 extreme。

    结构-实例-词根三维推断法
  • vulnerable 易受伤害的、脆弱的

让我们 synthesize these clues。从 causal logic 看,exercise 作为 protective factor 使人 less vulnerable,说明 vulnerable 是一种 need protection 的状态。从 sentence context 看,那些 struggle to handle negative emotions 的人 more intensely affected, exercise 降低了这种 susceptibility。从 morphology 看,-able suffix 表示 capacity,vulner- 与 harm 相关。综合起来,vulnerable 描述的是一种 易受外界影响或伤害、缺乏抵抗力 的特质。在这个 specific context 中,指的是 easily affected by negative emotional stimuli。

    对立关系加词缀反推法
  • intense 强烈的、剧烈的

    通过 combining two contextual clues,我们可以 clearly see intense 的含义。在 第2段 中,intense 与 gentle 形成 antonym pair,加上 time contrast(several minutes vs. 40 minutes),表明 intense 描述的是 high degree 或 great strength。

Morphologically,moder- root 本身就暗示 balance 和 avoidance of extremes。因此,moderate 描述的是一种 适度的、不过分的、保持中庸 的特质,既不太强也不太弱。

RHETORIC · 修辞手法

5 处修辞手法与仿写

每处修辞给出它在本文的具体用法、同类信号词清单与一份可直接套用的 写作仿写建议——读完能认,也能写。

  • 列数字

    P1 P2 P3

文章开头 quote 了一个 precise figure:"One 60-minute run can add seven hours to your life",这个 quantitative statement 直接用 numerical contrast 来 demonstrate running 的 life-extending effect。接着提到 runners 平均 live three years longer,再用 20 percent faster learning speed 和 40 minutes、30 minutes 这些 specific time frames 来 support 不同 running types 的 cognitive benefits。这些 concrete numbers 让 abstract health benefits 变得 tangible and convincing,强化了 running 对 lifespan 和 brain function 的 measurable impact,精准支撑了文章的 central argument。

信号词 60-minute seven hours three years 20 percent 40 minutes 30 minutes one study another study

仿写: 当你要 explain 某个 phenomenon 的 significance 时,问自己:能否用 quantifiable data 来 illustrate?比如讨论 sleep deprivation 的 harm,不要只说 "affects performance",而要说 "reduces productivity by 30%" 或 "increases error rate from 2% to 15%"。Numerical comparisons 最有 impact, like "X is three times more effective than Y"。模版:"[Action] can [verb] [specific number/percentage] [unit/outcome]. Research shows that [specific time/amount] of [activity] leads to [numerical improvement] in [measured aspect]."

  • 举例子

    P2 P3

文章用 "For example" 和 "In another study" 明确 introduce 了两个 concrete research examples。First example 对比 intense running 和 gentle running 对 learning new words 的 different effects,用 participants' actual performance data 来 demonstrate 短时高强度 running 的 cognitive advantage。Second example 展示 moderate jogging 如何 help regulate emotional responses to sad content。这两个 specific cases 把 abstract claim "running changes your brain and mind" 变成 verifiable scenarios,让 theoretical benefits 有了 real-world application context, perfectly illustrate 了 intensity-dependent effects mentioned in the thesis。

信号词 For example For instance In another study one study such as like take...for example to illustrate as an illustration

仿写: 当你 present 一个 general principle 或 broad finding 时,立即 follow up with "For example" 或 "For instance"。Choose examples that are specific, relatable, and directly relevant。Structure 应该是:general statement → transitional phrase → detailed example → link back to main point。比如写 "Social media affects mental health",接着 "For example, a 2019 study found that teenagers who spent more than 3 hours daily on Instagram reported 25% higher anxiety levels"。模版:"[General claim]. For example/instance, in one study/case, [specific subjects] [specific action] and [specific result], demonstrating that [connection to main point]."

  • 作比较

    P1 P2

文章 systematically compares different types of running 来 reveal their distinct effects。First comparison contrasts "short, fast running" versus "long-distance running" 对 brain 的 varying impacts。Second comparison 在 第2段 直接 compare "intense running" (several minutes) 和 "gentle running" (40 minutes) 对 learning ability 的 different outcomes。还有 runners vs. non-runners 的 lifespan comparison, running vs. other forms of exercise 的 life-extension effectiveness。这些 systematic comparisons 不仅 highlight running's superiority,更重要的是 reveal the nuanced principle:exercise effects are intensity-dependent。Comparison 让 readers understand not just "running is good" but "which type suits which purpose",deepening the thesis about running's varied brain-changing mechanisms。

信号词 compared than versus while whereas in contrast on the other hand different vary according to more...than less...than

仿写: 当 presenting multiple options 或 discussing effects of different approaches 时,structure your comparison systematically。Use parallel structure 来 ensure clarity:"A does X, while B does Y" 或 "Compared to A, B shows..."。明确 comparison 的 basis (time, intensity, outcome)。比如写 "Online learning vs. traditional classroom",specify "In terms of flexibility, online courses allow..., whereas traditional classes require..."。Avoid vague comparisons;quantify when possible。模版:"While [Option A] [action/characteristic], [Option B] [contrasting action/characteristic]. Compared to [A], [B] [shows/demonstrates] [specific difference] in [measured aspect]."

  • 引资料

    P1 P2 P3

文章开篇 directly cites The Times 的 claim 来 establish initial credibility,然后 references "a new review of studies" 作为 evidence base。第2段 和 第3段 都明确提到 "in one study" 和 "researchers compared/asked",showing that conclusions are derived from peer-reviewed research rather than speculation。这种 extensive citation pattern 建立了 scientific authority,让关于 running's cognitive and emotional benefits 的 claims 变得 trustworthy and verifiable。引资料不仅 supports 文章 thesis,更重要的是 signal 这是 evidence-based exposition rather than opinion piece, reinforcing the credibility of the intensity-dependent effects argument。

信号词 based on according to research shows studies show researchers found published in one study review concluded evidence suggests experts say

仿写: 在 making significant claims 时,immediately cite authoritative sources。Use phrases like "According to [source]" 或 "Research published in [journal/year] shows"。Be specific about source type (study, review, expert statement) 而非 vague "some research"。引用要 strategic:开头用 high-impact claim to hook readers, body paragraphs 用 detailed studies to support specific points。记得 integrate citations smoothly into your narrative rather than dropping them abruptly。模版:"According to [source], [claim]. Research published in [context] has shown that [finding]. In one study, researchers [action] and found that [result]."

  • 分类别

    P1

文章在 第1段 结尾 explicitly categorizes running into two types:"short, fast running" 和 "long-distance running",并 emphasize "the precise effects vary according to whether..."。这个 classification 成为后续 paragraphs 的 organizational framework。第2段 explores intense (short) running's cognitive benefits,第3段 examines moderate (longer duration) running's emotional regulation effects。这种 systematic categorization 让复杂的 "running changes your brain" 变得 structured and comprehensible,帮助 readers understand 不仅是 "running is beneficial" 而是 "different types serve different purposes",perfectly supporting the thesis about varied brain-changing effects。

信号词 vary according to can be divided into falls into categories types kinds classified as two types including such as

仿写: 当 discussing a complex topic with multiple dimensions 时,establish clear categories early。Use explicit language like "can be divided into", "falls into X categories", "varies according to"。确保 categories are mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive。为每个 category provide dedicated analysis or examples。Structure 应该是:introduce overall topic → establish classification criteria → present categories → explore each systematically。比如写 "stress management techniques",可以 categorize as "physical (exercise), mental (meditation), social (support groups)" 然后 elaborate each。模版:"[Topic] can be divided/categorized into [number] types: [category 1] and [category 2]. The effects/characteristics vary according to [criteria]. [Category 1] [specific traits], while [category 2] [different traits]."

IMPLIED MEANING · 言外之意

4 处话里有话

作者没有明说、但靠信号词传递出来的态度与暗示——每处给出原文片段、信号词类型与解读。

  • 跑步益处不止健康层面

    P1
But there's more to running than its health benefits.

转折类 But there's more to but however yet nevertheless nonetheless still

这个 implicature 的 underlying message 是:虽然 longevity benefits are impressive,但 the cognitive and emotional effects 才是 the real story here。作者 deliberately uses 'more to' 来 downgrade the importance of health benefits(尽管 paragraph 开头 spent considerable space on them),实际上是在 set up a rhetorical hierarchy。这对 article thesis 的 role 是 crucial 的,因为它 establishes the framework for subsequent paragraphs—告诉 readers 接下来的 specific studies about learning and emotion regulation 才是 the core evidence。这种 strategic positioning 让 thesis 从 'running extends life' expand to 'running transforms mental function',significantly broadening the scope and depth of the argument。

  • 效果因跑步类型而异

    P1
However, the precise effects vary according to whether you engage in short, fast running or long-distance running.

转折类 However however but yet nevertheless nonetheless still

这个 implication 是在 warn readers:'don't expect uniform results'。作者 uses 'however' 来 introduce a critical nuance—running 不是 one-size-fits-all solution, the benefits are contingent on exercise modality。这 serves the thesis by adding scientific rigor and credibility;它 prepares readers for the comparative evidence in subsequent paragraphs(intense vs. moderate running)。Without this qualifier, the article would risk oversimplification。这个 implicature essentially says: 'the general claim is true,但 the devil is in the details',prompting readers to pay attention to specific conditions, which aligns perfectly with the evidence-based nature of expository writing。

  • 短时高强度跑步效果更显著

    P2
Participants were able to learn 20 percent faster after the intense running and they showed a superior memory when tested again a week later.

数据对比类 20 percent faster 20 percent twice as three times significantly more markedly higher considerably greater

这个 statistical comparison 的 underlying message 是:intense running is demonstrably more effective for cognitive enhancement than moderate exercise。'20 percent faster' provides concrete proof,而 'superior memory' adds qualitative reinforcement。The implicature supports the thesis by offering empirical evidence for the 'precise effects vary' claim from 第1段。它 demonstrates that not all running is equal—intensity matters for specific outcomes。这个 finding 的 value 是 it gives readers actionable insight:if your goal is learning enhancement, choose high-intensity intervals。这种 specificity 让 the article transcend generic 'exercise is good' advice, providing nuanced, evidence-based guidance that distinguishes this exposition from surface-level health writing。

  • 情绪调节效果因人而异

    P3
Participants who usually struggled to handle negative emotions were more intensely affected by the sad clips, just as you'd expect. But crucially, this was less so if they had completed the 30-minute jog.

预期确认后的转折强调类 just as you'd expect. But crucially crucially critically importantly significantly notably remarkably

这个 implicature 的 core message 是:moderate jogging acts as an emotional buffer for vulnerable individuals。'Just as you'd expect' validates that emotional vulnerability is real,而 'but crucially, this was less so' reveals running's protective effect。The phrase 'less vulnerable' implies running doesn't eliminate emotional response,但 moderates its intensity—这种 nuanced claim 比 'running fixes emotions' 更 credible and scientifically sound。For the thesis,这个 finding demonstrates emotional regulation as a concrete benefit, complementing the cognitive benefits from 第2段。Together,they support the overarching claim that running's mental effects are diverse and substantive。这个 implicature 的 value 还在于 it highlights personalized benefits—helping those who 'usually struggled',suggesting running may be particularly valuable for specific populations, adding practical relevance to the scientific exposition。
