Impostor Phenomenon: When self-doubt gets the upper hand

People who systematically underestimate themselves and their own performance suffer from the so-called Impostor Phenomenon. They think that any success is due to external circumstances or just luck and chance. Those people live in constant fear that their "deception" will be exposed.

It is common for people to question their abilities now and again. A healthy amount of reflection and self-doubt can protect a person from acting impulsively. However, there are people who are permanently plagued by a massive amount of self-doubt despite delivering a good performance. They think that all of their successes are not a product of their skill or hard work, instead they attribute their own successes to external circumstances, for example, to luck and chance, or believe that their performance is massively overestimated by others. Failures, on the other hand, are always internalised as the result of their own shortcomings.

Psychologists from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg examined the topic for the first time under real-life conditions. Seventy-six participants completed a range of intelligence tests and received positive feedback on them, regardless of their actual performance. They were then asked why they think they did so well.

The study showed two things: First, the self-reported degree of Impostor Phenomenon is not related to actual measured intelligence or performance. Secondly, the test supported the assumption that people with a tendency to exhibit the Impostor Phenomenon devalue their objectively measured performance and attribute positive results to external causes such as luck and chance, but not to their own abilities. These results are also completely unrelated to age and gender.

A permanent underestimation of one's own abilities is often accompanied by the fear that this supposed intellectual deception will be exposed sooner or later and that they will pay the price for this. The Impostor Phenomenon was first described in 1978 by US psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes. They observed that there is a particularly high number of successful women who do not think they are very intelligent. The Impostor Phenomenon is not defined as a mental illness. However, people who suffer from it show a higher vulnerability to depression.

What do people who systematically underestimate themselves believe about their success?

    • A Their success mainly comes from their own hard work.
    • B They believe their performance is overestimated by others.
    • C Their success is due to luck and chance or external circumstances.
    • D They are not afraid that their deception will be exposed.
    • E They systematically overestimate their own performance.
    • F They attribute their failures to external circumstances.

原文明确说明 they think that any success is due to external circumstances or just luck and chance。正确项用 is due to 保留原意,并用 or 连接 luck and chance 与 external circumstances,属于 same meaning 的同义转述。

找到 success 后的 due to external circumstances or just luck and chance,然后直接选择正确项中同时出现 luck and chance 或 external circumstances 的那一个。

How do people plagued by massive self-doubt interpret their failures?

    • A They attribute them to luck and chance.
    • B They believe their failures are overestimated by others.
    • C They consider failures a product of external circumstances.
    • D They see them as the result of their own shortcomings.
    • E They think failures only result from a lack of hard work.
    • F They view failures as unimportant and temporary.

Failures, on the other hand, are always internalised as the result of their own shortcomings。正确项用 see them as 替换 internalised as,并用 result of their own shortcomings 保留原意,属于同义替换。

What did the participants receive after completing intelligence tests?

    • A They received negative feedback based on their actual scores.
    • B They received no feedback until the end of the study.
    • C Their feedback matched their actual performance exactly.
    • D They were given financial rewards for participating.
    • E They received positive feedback regardless of their actual performance.
    • F They were asked to assess their own intelligence.

原文说 received positive feedback on them, regardless of their actual performance。正确项几乎是原文的复现,只把 on them 转换为 after the tests。障碍在于 regardless of their actual performance 容易被忽略,命题人可能用 according to actual performance 来混淆。

看到 received positive feedback regardless of their actual performance,马上选择正确项,不必细读其他干扰项。

What did the study show about the self-reported degree of the Impostor Phenomenon?

    • A It is strongly linked to actual measured intelligence.
    • B It is different for men and women.
    • C It shows that people with the Impostor Phenomenon perform poorly.
    • D It is caused by luck and chance.
    • E It decreases as people grow older.
    • F It is not related to actual measured intelligence or performance.

原文直接说 self-reported degree of Impostor Phenomenon is not related to actual measured intelligence or performance。正确项基本照搬原文,只省略 self-reported degree of Impostor Phenomenon 用 it 指代。

找到 is not related to actual measured intelligence or performance,马上选择正确项。

  5. 第 5 段 定位词 first described by whom

When and by whom was the Impostor Phenomenon first described?

    • A In 1978 by US psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes.
    • B In 1978 by psychologists from Martin Luther University.
    • C As a mental illness by two American psychiatrists.
    • D By successful women who did not think they were intelligent.
    • E In 1987 by two British psychologists.
    • F As a form of depression by US researchers.

原文明确说 first described in 1978 by US psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes。

在 第5段 中进一步补充,该现象 is not defined as a mental illness。这种下定义的方法精准地 demarcates the boundaries of the phenomenon,使得 readers 在阅读之初就能理解这类人群的 psychological state 以及 core features,为后续展开 scientific research 奠定了坚实的 conceptual foundation。

信号词 so-called is defined as is described as refer to known as

仿写: 如果你想在说明文中 clarify an abstract concept,不妨思考:如何用一句话 capture the key characteristics? [Term] can be defined as [a psychological state / a phenomenon] where individuals [specific behavior], leading to [consequence or outcome].'

    P2

作者在 第2段 中巧妙地运用作比较,先对比了 healthy reflection 与 massive self-doubt 的不同 impact,随后又将归因方式进行了对比:将 successes 归咎于 external circumstances(如 luck and chance),而把 failures, on the other hand, 归结为 internal shortcomings。

信号词 on the other hand however instead in contrast whereas while

While ordinary people usually attribute their success to [internal factors], those with [phenomenon] view their achievements as [external factors]; on the other hand, they blame themselves for [any failure].'

    P3 P4

The study showed for example for instance such as take ... as an example

To demonstrate this phenomenon, researchers conducted an experiment where [participants/subjects] were asked to [action], revealing that [key finding or behavior].'

    P3 P5

US psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes

Psychologists from described in ... by observed that according to study by

This phenomenon was first identified by [author/institution] in [year], who observed that [key findings/observations], further confirming that [main thesis].'

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
Those people live in constant fear that their 'deception' will be exposed.

    P2
A healthy amount of reflection and self-doubt can protect a person... However, there are people who are permanently plagued by a massive amount of self-doubt...

However Yet In contrast On the contrary Nonetheless Instead

    P3
examined the topic for the first time under real-life conditions.

创新与条件限定类 for the first time under real-life conditions for the first time under authentic conditions in real-world settings unprecedentedly

    P4
First, the self-reported degree of Impostor Phenomenon is not related to actual measured intelligence or performance.

逻辑否定与相关性驳斥类 is not related to has no bearing on is independent of bears no relation to is unrelated to

句中 is not related to 的言外之意在于打破大众对自卑感源于 low ability 的传统误解。

    P5
The Impostor Phenomenon is not defined as a mental illness. However, people who suffer from it show a higher vulnerability to depression.

However... is not classified as... yet... does not count as... but... is not labeled as... nevertheless...

作者先澄清该现象 not defined as a mental illness,紧接着用 However 引出与 depression 的关联,言外之意是警告读者决不能因为该现象缺乏 clinical diagnosis 标签就轻视其危害。
