The tree people in the Lord of the Rings—the Ents—can get around by walking. But for real trees, it's harder to uproot. Because they're literally rooted into the ground, they are unable to leave and go elsewhere.

When a tree first starts growing in a certain area, it's likely that the climatic envelope—the temperature, humidity, rainfall patterns and so on—suits it. Otherwise, it would be unable to grow from a seedling. But as it ages, these conditions may change and the area around it may no longer be suitable for its offspring.

When that happens, many trees like walnuts, oaks and pines, rely exclusively on so-called "scatter hoarders," such as birds, to move their seeds to new localities. Many birds like to store food for the winter, which they subsequently retrieve. When the birds forget to retrieve their food—and they do sometimes—a seedling has a chance to grow. The bird Clark's nutcracker, for example, hides up to 100,000 seeds per year, up to 30 kilometers away from the seed source, and has a very close symbiotic(共生的) relationship with several pine species, most notably the whitebark pine.

As trees outgrow their ideal habitats in the face of climate change, these flying ecosystem engineers could be a big help in replanting trees. It's a solution for us—getting birds to do the work is cheap and effective—and it could give vulnerable oaks and pines the option to truly "make like a tree and leave."

  1. P1

    Rooted and Unable to Move

Real trees cannot relocate because they are rooted in place.

  2. P2

    When Habitats Change

Changing climates can make a tree's original habitat unsuitable for its offspring.

  3. P3

    Birds as Seed Dispersers

Scatter-hoarding birds help trees spread seeds to new habitats where forgotten seeds can grow.

  4. P4

A Natural Solution for Tree Relocation

Bird-assisted seed dispersal is a cheap and effective solution for helping trees respond to climate change.

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 real trees move to another place

Why are real trees unable to move to another place?

    • A Because they do not have the ability to walk like the Ents.
    • B Because the climatic envelope prevents them from surviving elsewhere.
    • C Because they are literally rooted in the ground.
    • D Because birds usually retrieve all the seeds they store.
    • E Because their offspring cannot grow from seedlings.
    • F Because replanting trees is too expensive for people.

题干问 Why,正确项直接复现 because 后的 cause,并保留 literally rooted in the ground 这一核心事实。

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 as the tree ages area around a tree

What may happen to the area around a tree as the tree ages?

    • A It will become permanently ideal for the original tree.
    • B It may lose all of its rainfall and humidity.
    • C It will prevent birds from storing food for the winter.
    • D It may no longer be suitable for the tree's offspring.
    • E It may become too distant from the seed source.
    • F It will allow seedlings to grow without suitable conditions.

该项准确保留 may no longer be suitable 的可能性和否定变化,并准确限定对象为 offspring。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 forgotten seed stored by a bird

How can a forgotten seed stored by a bird contribute to tree reproduction?

    • A The bird retrieves it in winter and plants it deliberately.
    • B It changes the temperature and humidity of the local climate.
    • C It enables the bird to hide up to 100,000 seeds every year.
    • D It guarantees that the offspring will thrive in any locality.
    • E It can grow into a seedling after the bird fails to retrieve it.
    • F It allows mature trees to uproot themselves and relocate.

    正确项复原了原文的关键机制:birds 储存种子后,有时 forget to retrieve,未被取回的种子便获得 a chance to grow。

  4. 第 4 段 定位词 use of birds benefit ... people

What benefit does the proposed use of birds offer people?

    • A It enables people to stop climate change immediately.
    • B It eliminates the need for any human involvement in forest management.
    • C It guarantees the survival of all vulnerable tree species.
    • D It allows birds to establish symbiotic relationships with every pine species.
    • E It keeps trees permanently within their ideal habitats.
    • F It provides a cheap and effective way to replant trees.

该项平行改写 getting birds to do the work is cheap and effective,并保留 replant trees 这一用途和 people 的受益视角。 障碍在于原文同时提到 vulnerable oaks and pines 的获益,考生需要辨清题干问的是 people,而不是树木;此外 do the work 被改写成 way to replant trees,需要识别功能层面的同义表达。

这个意群通过 Lord of the Rings 中的 Ents 作为 analogy,引出 real trees 面临的核心 problem:它们 literally rooted into the ground, unable to leave,这种 inability to uproot 构成了后文讨论的 fundamental challenge。

这个意群深入阐释 why immobility matters:tree 最初 growing 时 climatic envelope 是 suitable 的,但 as it ages, conditions may change,导致 area 对其 offspring 不再 suitable,这解释了 why trees need relocation mechanism。

这个意群介绍 natural solution:when problem happens, many trees 依赖 scatter hoarders like birds 来 move seeds to new localities。通过 mechanism explanation(birds store food → forget to retrieve → seedling grows)和 concrete example(Clark's nutcracker 和 whitebark pine 的 symbiotic relationship),详细说明这个 biological process。

这是说明文的 core explanatory section:它不仅 introduce solution,更通过 detailed mechanism 和 specific example 让 abstract concept(seed dispersal)变得 concrete and credible,为最后的 application suggestion 提供 scientific foundation。

这个意群提升到 practical application level:as trees outgrow ideal habitats 由于 climate change, these flying ecosystem engineers 能提供 big help in replanting。强调这是 cheap and effective solution for us,同时给 vulnerable trees 提供 option to migrate,实现 mutual benefit。

    作为说明文的 conclusion,这个意群完成 practical implication 的 synthesis:它将前面的 biological mechanism 和 current crisis(climate change)连接起来,highlight solution 的 dual benefits(cost-effective for humans + survival option for trees),给整个 explanation 一个 purposeful closure。

    说明文的 body paragraphs 会 elaborate on 问题的 causes、consequences 或 underlying mechanisms。第2段 解释了 why trees face this problem(climatic envelope changes),第3段 则 introduce 了 natural solution(scatter hoarders)。

第4段 用 As trees outgrow 来 recap the problem,然后 propose birds as a solution,最后用 It's a solution for us 来 emphasize practical value

本文主旨完整包含了 trees cannot migrate(problem)+ birds can help by dispersing seeds(solution)+ natural and cost-effective(evaluation),这正是 integrating 全文 key elements 的 result

MAIN IDEA ·

Trees cannot migrate when climate conditions change because they are rooted in place. However, scatter-hoarding birds like Clark's nutcracker can help by dispersing seeds to new suitable habitats, offering a natural and cost-effective solution for tree relocation amid climate change.
WORD INFERENCE ·

首先,从 context 来看,trees 因为 rooted into the ground 而无法离开,uproot 作为一个与 rooted 相关的动作出现。

信号词 like as similar to just as analogous to resemble comparable to

比如讨论 data storage,你可以说 'Unlike a library where you can physically move books, digital data...'。

通过 concrete numbers(100,000 seeds per year、30 kilometers away)和 specific relationship(whitebark pine),将 abstract biological process 变成 tangible case study。这个 detailed example 既 proves 前文提到的 mechanism exists,又 demonstrates 它的 scale and effectiveness,为 第4段 的 solution proposal 提供 credible evidence。

信号词 for example for instance such as like including particularly notably a case in point

仿写: 在提出 general principle 后,问自己:能否找到 one or two具体 cases 来 demonstrate? [General statement]. [Specific example], for instance, [detailed description with numbers], and [additional specific detail]'。

    P3

第3段 中的 numerical data('100,000 seeds per year'、'30 kilometers')通过 quantitative evidence 来 demonstrate seed dispersal 的 impressive scale。

信号词 up to approximately around over more than as many as reaches about nearly

选择 meaningful metrics(数量、距离、时间、百分比)来 replace vague terms like 'many'、'far'、'often'。 [Subject] [action verb] up to [specific number] [units], [additional measurement]'。

    P2

第2段 中 'climatic envelope' 后面紧跟 dash 和 explanatory phrase('the temperature, humidity, rainfall patterns and so on'),这是典型的 definitional structure。

信号词 — that is namely i.e. in other words defined as refers to means ( )

可以用 dash、parentheses 或 'that is' 来 introduce definition。模版:'[Technical term]—[plain language explanation of components]—[continues main sentence]'。Keep definitions concise but complete,列举 key elements 而不是 exhaustive details。

    P3

第3段 用 'When the birds forget to retrieve their food—and they do sometimes—a seedling has a chance to grow' 来 explain 整个 seed dispersal mechanism 如何 actually work。这个 elaboration 不仅说明了 process,还通过 parenthetical remark('and they do sometimes')增加了 realistic detail,让 biological phenomenon 更加 understandable。

信号词 when where which means that is to say in other words because since as so that

仿写: 在提出 key mechanism 或 relationship 后,add explanatory clause 来 reveal the 'how' or 'why'。可以用 'when...'、'because...'、'which means...' 来 introduce elaboration。 [Main statement]. When [condition], [explanatory outcome]—[additional realistic detail]—[consequence]'。This layered explanation builds comprehensive understanding。

    P1 P4

第4段 中 'cheap and effective' 暗含了与 other potential solutions 的 comparison,强调 bird-assisted dispersal 的 advantages。 结合 第1段 的 Ents vs. real trees comparison,文章通过 contrast 来 highlight trees' limitation 以及 birds' unique capability,支撑 main thesis about natural migration assistance。

信号词 unlike compared to in contrast whereas while rather than instead of more...than less...than

仿写: 当 propose a solution 或 describe a feature 时,考虑 what alternatives exist。Use comparative language 来 position your subject。 It's [positive attribute] and [positive attribute]—[implicit contrast with costly/ineffective alternatives]' 或 'Unlike [alternative approach], [your approach] [advantage]'。Subtle comparison 可以 avoid seeming argumentative while still making your point。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
The tree people in the Lord of the Rings—the Ents—can get around by walking. But for real trees, it's harder to uproot.

But but however yet nevertheless nonetheless on the contrary

    P2
But as it ages, these conditions may change and the area around it may no longer be suitable for its offspring.

模糊限制语 may no longer may might could possibly probably perhaps

    P3
When the birds forget to retrieve their food—and they do sometimes—a seedling has a chance to grow.

插入式强调 and they do sometimes and they do —and they do— (and they do) in fact indeed as it happens

这个 parenthetical insertion 插入语'and they do sometimes'看似是个 casual remark 随意评论,但 implication 言外之意极为 important 重要: birds' forgetfulness 鸟类的健忘并非 rare accident 罕见意外,而是 regular occurrence 常规现象。 言外之意是: what seems like 看似是 birds' mistake 鸟的失误,actually serves as 实际充当 nature's design 自然的设计。

    P4
It's a solution for us—getting birds to do the work is cheap and effective—and it could give vulnerable oaks and pines the option to truly 'make like a tree and leave.'

It's a solution for us it's a solution this is this means we should we must the answer is

It's a solution for us'的 implication 言外之意是: 作者不仅在 describing 描述一个 natural phenomenon 自然现象,而是在 proposing 提出一个 practical strategy 实践策略来 address 应对 climate change 气候变化。 最后用 wordplay 文字游戏'make like a tree and leave'既 echoes 呼应开篇的 mobility theme 移动性主题,又用 humor 幽默 reinforces 强化 solution's elegance 解决方案的巧妙性。

这是 expository conclusion 的特征:extending the explanation 而非 making final arguments。议论文会 reinforce the claim 并 urge readers,新闻报道会提供 follow-up information 或 context。

没有 debatable thesis 需要 defend,也没有 breaking news 需要 report,纯粹是 explaining how nature works。
