A good dose of willpower is often necessary to see any task through, whether it's sticking to a spending plan or finishing a great novel. And if you want to increase that willpower, a new study suggests you just simply have to believe you have it. According to the study, what matters most is what we think about our willpower. If we believe it's a finite resource, we act that way. We feel exhausted and need breaks between demanding mental tasks. However, people who view their willpower as a limitless resource get energized instead.

The researchers used a psychological assessment tool to test the validity of the study. They asked 1,100 Americans and 1,600 Europeans to grade different statements such as "After a challenging mental activity, my energy is depleted, and I must rest to get it refueled again." or "I can focus on a mental task for long periods without feeling tired." Although there was little difference between men and women overall, Americans were more likely to admit to needing breaks after completing mentally challenging tasks. European participants, on the other hand, claimed they were able to keep going.

Based on the findings, the researchers suggest that the key to boosting your willpower is to believe that you have an abundant supply of it. "Your feelings about your willpower affect the way you behave. But these feelings are changeable," they said. "Changing your beliefs about the nature of your self-control can have positive effects on character development. This leads to healthier behaviors and perceptions of other people."

  1. P1

    Willpower: A Matter of Belief

Beliefs about willpower shape mental endurance and energy.

  2. P2

    Survey Evidence Across Cultures

Survey evidence reveals differing beliefs about mental endurance across cultures.

  3. P3

    Changing Beliefs, Improving Self-Control

Changing beliefs about willpower can improve behavior and character development.

What does the new study suggest about willpower?

    • A It is a finite resource that needs to be refueled regularly.
    • B Physical exercise is more effective than mental tasks in boosting it.
    • C One's perception of it plays a decisive role in their performance.
    • D A good dose of willpower is only needed for financial plans.
    • E Believing in its limitlessness will make people feel exhausted.
    • F The study aims to help people finish reading great novels.

正确项对应文中“what matters most is what we think”。

    研究标记加逻辑核验 在 第1段 中先扫描 new study,再跳读 what matters most 和 however 等 logic signals,不必逐句翻译。

What did the researchers find about the participants' reactions?

    • A Men had significantly more willpower than women in both groups.
    • B Americans were more likely to focus for long periods without rest.
    • C European participants refused to take the psychological assessment.
    • D Europeans tended to be more persistent than Americans after mental work.
    • E The study was only conducted among a small group of experts.
    • F Most participants felt their energy was refueled immediately.

Europeans claimed they were able to keep going。正确项用 tended to 保留了调查结果的倾向性,并将 keep going 转换为 more persistent,属于 typical semantic equivalence。

    群体方向对照法 先用 participants 定位 第2段,再直接寻找 although 和 on the other hand 等 contrast signals。

How can changing the belief about willpower benefit an individual?

    • A It ensures that a person will never feel tired again.
    • B It leads to a decrease in one's social interactions.
    • C It helps individuals realize their willpower is naturally limited.
    • D It forces people to take more frequent breaks than before.
    • E It promotes healthier behaviors and better character development.
    • F It mainly focuses on finishing novels more quickly.

原文 explicit 提到 positive effects on character development 和 healthier behaviors。

这个 opening section 建立了整篇文章的 argumentative foundation,通过提出 'what we think about our willpower' 这个 key concept,为后续的 research evidence 和 practical implications 做好了铺垫

它展示了 cross-cultural comparison,证明了 beliefs about willpower 确实会 vary,这直接呼应了主旨中 'depends on one's beliefs' 的 key point

通过 'based on the findings' 这个 transitional phrase,作者将 empirical evidence 转化为 actionable suggestions,强调 changing beliefs 可以带来 positive effects

这个 closing section 完成了从 research findings 到 real-world applications 的 logical leap。

MAIN IDEA ·

议论文的 first paragraph 通常会 introduce the main topic,而 opening sentence 往往直接点出文章要讨论的 core issue。

    议论文会用 evidence 来 support its claim。

第3段 用 'based on the findings' 引出 researchers' suggestion,明确指出 key to boosting willpower 是 believing in abundant supply,还强调了 changing beliefs 能带来 positive effects。

However P1 believe P1 the key to P3 Based on the findings P3 positive effects P3

MAIN IDEA ·

The article argues that willpower is not a finite resource but rather depends on one's beliefs. Research shows that people who believe their willpower is limitless demonstrate greater mental endurance, suggesting that changing our beliefs about self-control can lead to healthier behaviors and positive character development.

信号词 however on the other hand in contrast whereas while conversely unlike but yet

具体写作时,用 however、on the other hand、in contrast 这类 transitional phrases 来标记转折。模版:[Group A] believe/view X as [negative attribute], therefore they [negative outcome]. However, [Group B] who perceive X as [positive attribute] tend to [positive outcome]。

After a challenging mental activity, my energy is depleted"。 这种 empirical support 让文章从 abstract assertion 转向 evidence-based argument。

信号词 according to for example for instance such as research shows studies indicate evidence suggests data reveals a case in point

写作时用"for example"、"according to"、"research shows"来引入。模版:[General claim]. According to [source/study], The results showed that [具体发现], which [如何支撑前面的claim]。

    P3

第三段建立了清晰的 causal chain:belief about willpower(因)→ how you behave(果1)→ positive effects on character development(果2)→ healthier behaviors(果3)。

信号词 lead to result in cause affect therefore thus consequently as a result because since

用"lead to"、"result in"、"cause"、"affect"这类 causal verbs 明确标示关系。可以构建 chain of effects:A → B → C。模版:[Action/Belief] can affect [直接结果]. This [direct result] leads to [further consequence], which ultimately results in [final outcome]。注意要让每一步的 causal link 都 logical and convincing,可以用 because、since 来补充 reasoning。

Your feelings about your willpower affect the way you behave. But these feelings are changeable."以及"Changing your beliefs...can have positive effects on character development. This leads to healthier behaviors..."。

信号词 they said according to as stated researchers suggest experts claim studies show in the words of to quote as X put it

引用前用"they said"、"according to"、"as X stated"来引入。 Based on [research/findings], the researchers suggest that [paraphrase]. As they stated, "[direct quote]."

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
if you want to increase that willpower, a new study suggests you just simply have to believe you have it

条件假设类 if provided that as long as on condition that supposing assuming given that

    P1
However, people who view their willpower as a limitless resource get energized instead

However however nevertheless on the contrary by contrast in contrast conversely

这个 however 引出的 contrast 的 implication 是:不同的 belief systems 导致完全相反的 physiological and psychological outcomes。

    P2
Although there was little difference between men and women overall, Americans were more likely to admit to needing breaks after completing mentally challenging tasks. European participants, on the other hand, claimed they were able to keep going.

Although although though even though despite in spite of while

这暗示 willpower beliefs 是 culturally constructed 而非 biologically determined(如果是 biological, gender difference 应该更 prominent)。

    P3
Your feelings about your willpower affect the way you behave. But these feelings are changeable

But but yet still nonetheless even so all the same

作者通过这个 turn 反驳潜在的 fatalistic interpretation:读者可能觉得 'if my feelings control me, I'm stuck',但 but 后的 changeable 暗示 agency 和 hope——你可以 change your feelings,从而 change your behavior。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为客观中立( Objective reporting with a mildly optimistic undertone)。

  • suggests P1

    同类词 indicates implies shows reveals

  • According to the study P1

    according to是典型的attribution phrase,把信息来源明确指向the study本身而不是作者自己,从而把作者的personal stance与研究结论清晰分离。

同类词 according to based on as reported by the study found researchers say

  • on the other hand P2

    on the other hand用来对比Americans和Europeans两组人的不同反应,这种balanced呈现两方data的写法说明作者试图做fair reporting,不偏向任何一方,支持客观中立的判断。

同类词 however in contrast whereas while

  • positive effects P3

第一段开头 'A good dose of willpower is often necessary' 这句话就直接提出了一个关于 willpower 的 claim,后面紧接着说新研究 suggests 你只需要 believe 就行。这种 'research suggests + controversial point' 的结构是典型的 argumentative pattern,而 expository text 会说 'research shows/explains how',news report 则会说 'study finds/reveals'。

第二段开头 'The researchers used... to test the validity',这里关键词是 test validity,说明在用 evidence 去 verify 第一段提出的 claim。第三段 'Based on the findings, the researchers suggest',这个 suggest 再次出现,并且给出 recommendation。

第三段结尾 'Changing your beliefs... can have positive effects' 和 'This leads to healthier behaviors',这里用了 can、leads to 这种表示 causation 和 possibility 的语言,明确在 advocate 一个 behavior change。 如果是说明文,会说 'People who change beliefs experience...',如果是新闻,会说 'Experts recommend...'

这篇文章完美展现了议论文的 prototypical structure:第一段用 'is necessary' 和 'if you want to increase' 建立 position,第二段用 research findings 作为 supporting evidence,第三段用 'the key to boosting' 和 'can have positive effects' 给出 actionable advice。整个 text 的 communicative purpose 不是告诉你 what willpower is (说明文),也不是报道 a study was published (新闻),而是 convince you to change your belief about willpower。

  • However P1 论证逻辑连接词 however nevertheless nonetheless yet on the contrary
  • Based on the findings P3 论证逻辑连接词 based on according to given that considering that in light of
  • the key to P3 立场表态词 the solution is the answer lies in the best way the most effective what matters most
