We're Underestimating the Risk of Human Extinction

Unthinkable as it may be, humanity, every last person, could someday be wiped from the face of the Earth. We have learned to worry about asteroids(小行星) and super volcanoes, but the more likely scenario, according to Nick Bostrom, a professor of philosophy at Oxford, is that we humans will destroy ourselves.

Professor Bostrom, who directs Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute, has argued over the course of several papers that human extinction risks are poorly understood and, worse still, severely underestimated by society. Some of these existential risks are fairly well known, especially the natural ones. But others are obscure or even exotic. Most worrying to Bostrom is the subset of existential risks that arise from human technology, a subset that he expects to grow in number and potency over the next century.

Despite his concerns about the risks posed to humans by technological progress, Bostrom is no luddite(科技进步反对者). In fact, he is a longtime advocate of trans-humanism—the effort to improve the human condition, and even human nature itself, through technological means. In the long run he sees technology as a bridge, a bridge we humans must cross with great care, in order to reach new and better modes of being. In his work, Bostrom uses the tools of philosophy and mathematics, in particular, probability theory, to try and determine how we as a species might achieve this safe passage. What follows is my conversation with Bostrom about some of the most interesting and worrying existential risks that humanity might encounter in the decades and centuries to come, and about what we can do to make sure we outlast them.

  1. P1

    The Unthinkable Reality: Human Self-Destruction

Humanity faces potential extinction, with self-destruction being the most likely scenario according to philosopher Nick Bostrom, more so than natural disasters.

  2. P2

The Underestimated Threat: Technology-Driven Existential Risks

Bostrom argues that existential risks, particularly those from human technology, are poorly understood and underestimated by society, with technological threats expected to increase over the next century.

它将第一段提出的 general concern about self-destruction 具体化为 Bostrom's research focus on existential risks,特别是 technology-driven ones。

  3. P3

Navigating the Bridge: Technology as Path to Human Evolution

Despite concerns about technological risks, Bostrom advocates trans-humanism, viewing technology as a bridge that requires careful navigation using philosophical and mathematical tools to achieve human advancement and ensure safe passage to better modes of existence.

它直接呼应了文章主旨中的关键元素 key elements:"advocating for trans-humanism" 对应原文的 advocacy,"careful navigation" 对应主旨中的 "careful navigation of technology",而 "better modes of being" 则对应 "human survival and evolution"。

Nick Bostrom more likely human extinction

According to Nick Bostrom, what is the more likely cause of human extinction?

    • A Asteroids are the most probable threat to humanity.
    • B Super volcanoes will inevitably wipe out all human beings.
    • C Humanity is more likely to destroy itself.
    • D Natural disasters have already caused human extinction.
    • E Humanity faces no serious danger from its own actions.
    • F The likelihood of human extinction cannot be assessed.

正确项准确压缩了专家判断中的 we humans will destroy ourselves。Humanity 对应 we humans, destroy itself 保留了 self-destruction 的施事关系,而 more likely 复现了原文的概率层级。

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 existential risks worries Bostrom most category

Which category of existential risks worries Bostrom most?

    • A Natural risks such as asteroids and super volcanoes.
    • B Risks that society has accurately measured.
    • C Exotic risks that have disappeared over time.
    • D Risks arising from human technology.
    • E Risks limited to the current century.
    • F Risks caused by the lack of technological progress.

该项对应原文中 the subset of existential risks that arise from human technology,并且这一 subset 被明确标记为 Most worrying to Bostrom。

  3. 第 3 段 定位词 in the long run view technology technology

How does Bostrom view technology in the long run?

    • A It is an obstacle that humanity should avoid completely.
    • B It guarantees a better future without any human caution.
    • C It is useful only for calculating probabilities.
    • D It has already solved the problem of existential risks.
    • E It is a bridge that must be crossed carefully to reach better ways of being.
    • F It should replace human nature through purely mathematical methods.

该项完整改写了 technology as a bridge、must cross with great care 和 in order to reach new and better modes of being 三层信息。bridge 表明技术具有过渡性的工具作用,carefully 保留条件限制,to reach better ways of being 保留最终目的。

  2. Bostrom

这个 paragraph 详细介绍了 Bostrom 在 Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute 的 work,说明他通过 several papers 论证了 extinction risks 被 society seriously underestimated。文段对 existential risks 进行了 categorization(natural vs. human technology-derived),并 highlight 了 Bostrom's main concern——technology-based risks 将在 next century 不断 grow in number and potency。

作为 expository text 的 body part,这个意群 provide 了 essential background information about Bostrom's academic position 和他的 core arguments。

  3. Bostrom

这个 concluding paragraph 展现了 Bostrom's paradoxical position:尽管 concerned about technological risks,他不是 luddite,反而是 trans-humanism 的 advocate。文段 explain 了他如何 view technology as a bridge to improved human condition,并且使用 philosophy and mathematics(especially probability theory)来 figure out safe passage。最后通过 meta-discourse(what follows is my conversation)为后续 content 做了 explicit preview。

它 complete 了这篇 expository introduction 的 logical arc:problem → expert's concern → expert's solution approach。

首先,sentence 中的 But...or even 这个 structure 清楚地显示 exotic 是 well known 的反面,而且比 obscure 程度更深。

Despite...is no...In fact

接着作者用 but 转折,引出 the more likely scenario 是 human self-destruction,通过 contrast 强化了 human-caused risks 的 severity,为全文的 central argument 奠定基础。

信号词 for example for instance such as including like namely particularly especially asteroids and super volcanoes

What are the most recognizable instances? We have learned to worry about [familiar example A] and [familiar example B], but the more [adjective] [scenario/problem] is...'

    P1 P2 P3

文章多次 cite Nick Bostrom 这位 Oxford professor 的 research 和 arguments,引用他的 academic authority 来 support the claim that extinction risks are underestimated。通过 reference 'several papers' 和 'Future of Humanity Institute',作者借助 expert credibility 增强文章的 persuasiveness。这种 appeal to authority 在 expository writing 中 establish trust with readers,让 controversial claims 显得更 legitimate and well-grounded。

信号词 according to Professor Bostrom argues has argued points out research shows studies indicate experts suggest scholars believe as noted by cited in

仿写: 当 present important claims 时,思考:Which experts or institutions 在这个 field 有 recognized authority?明确标注 source credentials(如 'professor at Oxford' 或 'directs Institute')来 maximize credibility。使用 reporting verbs 如 'argues'、'has shown'、'points out' 来 integrate citations naturally。 According to [expert name], [professional title/affiliation], [claim/finding]...' 或者 '[Expert], who [credential], has argued that...'

    P2

第二段通过 categorize existential risks into different types,展现了 systematic analysis。作者先分为 'natural ones' 和 human-caused ones,再细分为 'well known'、'obscure' 和 'exotic',最后 highlight 'the subset arising from human technology'。这种 hierarchical classification 让 complex topic 变得 organized and comprehensible,帮助 readers 理解 risk landscape 的 full spectrum,同时 emphasize 作者最关心的 technology-related risks 在整个 taxonomy 中的位置。

Some... But others can be divided into fall into categories types include classified as subset of among these one type... another type range from... to vary from... to

What are the logical divisions? 使用 hierarchical structure(broad to specific)来 layer your classification。可以用 comparative language(some vs. others, natural vs. human-caused)来 highlight distinctions。 [Topic] can be divided into [category A] and [category B]. Among these, some are [characteristic X], while others are [characteristic Y]. Most [adjective] is the subset of [specific category]...'

    P3

第三段使用 'technology as a bridge' 这个 powerful metaphor 来 conceptualize humanity's relationship with technology。这个 figurative comparison 将 abstract concept(technological progress)转化为 concrete image(bridge crossing),让 readers visualize the journey 和 inherent danger。'cross with great care' 强化了 risk element,而 'reach new and better modes of being' 描绘了 destination,整个 metaphor 完美 encapsulate 文章的 central tension:technology 既是 opportunity 也是 peril。

信号词 as a like serve as acts as functions as represents is a kind of resembles mirrors parallels

确保 mapping 在多个 aspects 上都 make sense(bridge 既有 connection 也有 risk)。Extend the metaphor 通过 related details('cross with care', 'reach new modes')来 maximize impact。避免 mixed metaphors 会 confuse readers。 [Abstract concept] is [concrete object/process], [elaboration showing how the comparison works], in order to [purpose/destination].'

    P3

比如对 'luddite' 的解释('科技进步反对者')和对 'trans-humanism' 的定义('the effort to improve the human condition... through technological means')。这些 definitions 对于 understanding Bostrom's position 至关重要,因为他既 advocates trans-humanism 又 worries about technology risks,这个 apparent paradox 需要 precise terminology 来 resolve。通过 define key concepts,作者 ensure readers 理解 nuanced argument。

信号词 — which means defined as refers to is means that is in other words specifically namely

When introducing technical or potentially misunderstood terms,立即 provide definition through appositive(用 dash 或 parentheses)或者 explanatory clause('which means', 'defined as')。Structure definition 包含 what it is 和 what distinguishes it from similar concepts。For complex terms,可以先 define 再 elaborate with examples or implications。模板:'[Term]—[brief definition]—[elaboration/significance]' 或 '[Term], [which/defined as] [explanation], [further context].'

    P1 P2

文章在第一段用 'more likely' 来 compare different extinction scenarios,对比 natural disasters(asteroids, volcanoes)和 human self-destruction 的 probability。第二段通过 'natural ones' vs. human-caused risks 的 comparison,以及 'well known' vs. 'obscure/exotic' 的 contrast,展现 risk spectrum。这些 comparisons 不仅 organize information,还通过 relative judgment 引导 readers 关注 most pressing concerns,特别是 underestimated technology risks。

信号词 more likely compared to rather than in contrast whereas while unlike different from similar to more/less than better/worse than

仿写: 设计 comparisons 时,选择 meaningful dimensions for comparison(likelihood, severity, familiarity)。Use comparative language explicitly('more/less', 'rather than', 'compared to')来 signal comparison。可以用 parallel structure 来 present items being compared,增强 clarity。Balance attention between items 除非 intentionally emphasizing one over another。 While [Item A] [characteristic], [Item B] is [comparative characteristic]. [Item A] are [attribute], but [Item B] are [contrasting attribute], particularly/especially [specific example].'

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
We have learned to worry about asteroids and super volcanoes, but the more likely scenario, according to Nick Bostrom, a professor of philosophy at Oxford, is that we humans will destroy ourselves.

转折类 but however yet nevertheless nonetheless still whereas

大众 focus on 外部的 natural disasters,但 Bostrom 认为 internal threat(人类自身)才是 primary danger。 它的 value 在于 challenge reader's assumptions, forcing them to 重新 evaluate where the real danger lies,从而为后文讨论 technological risks 做好 cognitive preparation。

    P2
human extinction risks are poorly understood and, worse still, severely underestimated by society

递进类 worse still even worse more importantly moreover furthermore what's more even more alarming

如果 risks 只是 poorly understood, education 就够了;但既然被 severely underestimated,就需要 paradigm shift in thinking,这 elevate 了整个 discussion 的 stakes。

    P2
Most worrying to Bostrom is the subset of existential risks that arise from human technology, a subset that he expects to grow in number and potency over the next century.

Most worrying most worrying most concerning most alarming particularly troubling especially disturbing crucially

言外之意是:我们正处于 critical window,必须 act now before these risks become unmanageable。这个 insight 对 article's main message 极其关键,因为它 establish 了 urgency narrative:不是 'if' we should address these risks,而是 'we must act immediately' because they're actively growing。这 transform 整个 discussion from theoretical concern 到 practical imperative。

  • Bostrom

    P3
Despite his concerns about the risks posed to humans by technological progress, Bostrom is no luddite.

Despite despite in spite of although even though while whereas

    P3
In the long run he sees technology as a bridge, a bridge we humans must cross with great care, in order to reach new and better modes of being.

Bridge 不是 scenic detour,而是 only path。言外之意包括:1) 不能 avoid technology (no other way);2) 停留原地不是 option (must cross);3) process 本身充满 danger (great care needed);4) 目标值得 risk ('new and better modes')。这个 complex metaphor 完美 encapsulate 了 article's central tension:technology 既是 threat 又是 promise。它 reinforce 了 main thesis:我们必须 understand and manage risks, not avoid technology altogether,因为 evolution 和 survival 都 depend on successful crossing。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

这里作者用了 'Unthinkable' 和 'wiped from the face of the Earth' 这样的 dramatic language,但紧接着用 'according to' 引入专家观点,显示出 objectivity 而非 personal panic,表明作者是在 presenting concerns 而不是 advocating fear。

第二段中的 'worse still, severely underestimated' 和 'Most worrying to Bostrom' 显示作者在 conveying Bostrom's concerns,但关键是这些 judgments 都被 attributed to Bostrom,作者在 amplifying expert views 而非 inserting personal bias,体现了 objective reporting 的特征。

第三段的 'Despite his concerns' 和 'In fact' 构成明显的 contrastive structure,作者 deliberately presents Bostrom 既 concerned 又 optimistic 的 dual stance。'no luddite'、'longtime advocate'、'bridge' metaphor 都在 balancing 前面的 doom-and-gloom narrative,显示作者在 constructing a nuanced picture 而非 one-sided alarm。

第三段末尾的 'safe passage'、'what we can do' 和 'make sure we outlast them' 显示文章的 ultimate direction 是 solution-oriented 和 forward-looking 的。作者不是在 dwelling on doom 而是在 framing the conversation around 'how to navigate',这是 constructively engaged 的 attitude marker。

整体上,作者既没有 dismiss existential risks(给予 substantial coverage),也没有 succumb to fatalism(emphasize 'bridge' and 'safe passage')。这种 'worried but working toward solutions' 的 attitude 在说明文中体现为 serious treatment of problems 配合 forward-looking language,显示 responsible engagement 而非 detached reporting 或 fear-mongering。

  • according to P1

'According to' 是 attribution marker,显示作者在 presenting someone else's view 而非 personal opinion。

  • worse still P2

'Worse still' 是 escalation marker,加强了 concern 的程度。但在这里它 introduces Bostrom's view('underestimated by society'),所以是在 amplifying expert concern 而非 author's panic。

同类词 more troubling most worrying particularly concerning especially alarming critically important

  • Despite P3

在这里它 signals 作者要 present Bostrom's optimistic side('advocate of trans-humanism')来 balance 前面的 concerns,显示作者在 constructing a complete picture 而非 cherry-picking negative aspects,体现 balanced reporting。

Although However Nevertheless Yet In contrast

  • In fact P3

'In fact' 是 reality-check marker,用来 correct potential misperceptions 或 strengthen counterpoints。这里它 reinforces Bostrom's positive stance('longtime advocate'),给 optimistic view 增加 credibility 和 emphasis,显示作者认为这个 positive dimension 同样 important and genuine。

Actually Indeed As a matter of fact In reality Truth be told

  • bridge P3

'Bridge' 是 metaphorical framing,将 technology 概念化为 means to positive transformation 而非 threat。这个 metaphor 带有 inherent optimism(bridges connect to better places),显示作者在 presenting technology through hopeful lens,尽管 acknowledging risks('must cross with great care'),体现 cautiously optimistic framing。

同类词 pathway journey transition passage crossroads

  • what we can do P3

'What we can do' 是 agency-oriented language,强调 human capacity to act 和 influence outcomes。在说明文中,这类 language 显示作者在 positioning readers as active agents 而非 passive victims,体现 empowering and solution-focused attitude,区别于 fatalistic or purely descriptive stances。

第1段 直接 introduce 了 humanity extinction 这个 topic,使用 'could someday be wiped' 这种 explanatory tone 来呈现一个 possibility,而不是像 argumentative essay 那样用 'should' 或 'must' 来 advocate 某个 position,也不像 news report 用 'has happened' 或 'announced' 来报道 recent events

第2段 紧接着对 第1段 的 topic 进行 elaborate explanation,使用 'has argued'、'are poorly understood'、'underestimated' 等 explanatory phrases 来 expand information about existential risks,这是典型的 说明文 progressive elaboration,而不是议论文的 argument building 或新闻的 chronological reporting

第3段 虽然提到 'Bostrom is no luddite' 和 'he is a longtime advocate',但作者始终是在 describe Bostrom's position 而不是 express personal opinion,使用 'In his work'、'What follows is' 这种 detached reporting language。
