One basic weakness in a conservation system based wholly on economic motives is that most members of the land community have no economic value. Yet these creatures are members of the biotic community and, if its stability depends on its integrity, they are entitled to continuance.

When one of these noneconomic categories is threatened and, if we happen to love it, we invent excuses to give it economic importance. At the beginning of the century songbirds were supposed to be disappearing. Scientists jumped to the rescue with some distinctly shaky evidence to the effect that insects would eat us up if birds failed to control them. The evidence had to be economic in order to be valid.

It is painful to read these roundabout accounts today. We have no land ethic yet, but we have at least drawn nearer the point of admitting that birds should continue as a matter of intrinsic right, regardless of the presence or absence of economic advantage to us.

A parallel situation exists in respect of predatory mammals and fish-eating birds. Time was when biologists somewhat overworked the evidence that these creatures preserve the health of game by killing the physically weak, or that they prey only on "worthless" species. Here again, the evidence had to be economic in order to be valid. It is only in recent years that we hear the more honest argument that predators are members of the community, and that no special interest has the right to exterminate them for the sake of benefit, real or fancied, to itself.

Some species of trees have been "read out of the party" by economics-minded foresters because they grow too slowly, or have too low a sale value to pay as timber crops. In Europe, where forestry is ecologically more advanced, the noncommercial tree species are recognized as members of the native forest community, to be preserved as such, within reason. Moreover, some have been found to have a valuable function in building up soil fertility. The interdependence of the forest and its constituent tree species, ground flora, and fauna is taken for granted.

To sum up: a system of conservation based solely on economic self-interest is hopelessly lopsided. It tends to ignore, and thus eventually to eliminate, many elements in the land community that lack commercial value, but that are essential to its healthy functioning. It assumes, falsely, that the economic parts of the biotic clock will function without the uneconomic parts.

6 段逐段主旨与解读

逐段拆解2010年考研英语一真题 的这篇原文——每段给出英文段落主旨、段落标题与中文解读,并提炼一条「这段为什么这样读」的具体方法。

  1. P1

    The Flaw of Economic-Based Conservation

An economics-based conservation system is flawed because most land community members lack economic value yet are entitled to continuance as part of the biotic community.

这一段作为全文的开篇,直接对应了文章主旨里conservation system based solely on economic value is fundamentally flawed这个核心观点,可以说是整篇文章的thesis statement,为后面几段的example展开(比如birds、predators、trees)做了理论铺垫。

    转折句定位法
  2. P2

    Economic Excuses for Beloved Species

People invent economic justifications for species they love but that lack real economic value, as illustrated by the songbird example.

    这一段通过songbird这个example,进一步support了文章主旨里ignores non-commercial species的批判,同时也为后面paragraph 3的转折(即我们逐渐意识到应该用intrinsic right而不是economic value来evaluate)做了铺垫。

    观点与例证分层法
  3. P3

Toward Intrinsic Right, Not Yet a Land Ethic

Society is gradually shifting from economic justification to recognizing species' intrinsic right to exist, though a full land ethic is not yet achieved.

    这段是承接第2段的songbird example之后的reflection,直接引出了文章主旨里intrinsic right to exist这个关键概念,是从批判economic-based论证过渡到正面提出alternative标准的桥梁段落。

    让步转进结构识别
  4. P4

Predators as Community Members, Not Servants

The economic justification once used for predators is giving way to the more honest recognition that predators, as community members, need not serve human interests to justify their existence.

这段通过predators这个新example进一步扩展了论证的范围,从songbirds扩展到更具争议性的predatory animals,强化了文章主旨中all members of biotic community deserve protection这一universal claim的说服力。

    平行论证信号词捕捉
  5. P5

Trees Excluded by Economics, Valued in Europe

Using Europe as a model, this paragraph shows that noncommercial tree species, though excluded by economic foresters, are vital community members whose ecological interdependence should be recognized.

这段用tree species作为第三个具体example,和前面的birds、predators形成了三重递进的证据链,最终都指向文章主旨里non-commercial species that are essential to ecological integrity这一核心论断,同时Europe的例子也隐含着一种应然的解决方向。

    正反案例对比法
  6. P6

Conclusion: The Lopsidedness of Economic Conservation

This paragraph concludes that economics-only conservation is lopsided because it falsely assumes economic elements can function without the essential, noneconomic parts of the biotic community.

这一段是全文的closing paragraph,直接restate了文章主旨,即a conservation system based solely on economic value is fundamentally flawed,并且通过biotic clock的比喻再次强调了整体性和interdependence的重要性,起到了收束全文论证、强化thesis的关键作用。

  1. 第 1 段 定位词 economic motives biotic community

What is the primary flaw of a conservation system solely driven by economic motives?

    • A It overemphasizes the integrity of the biotic community.
    • B It ensures the stability of the land community effectively.
    • C It fails to account for the members of the biotic community that lack commercial value.
    • D It grants continuance only to creatures with intrinsic rights.
    • E It relies too heavily on scientific evidence about insects.
    • F It encourages people to love noneconomic categories.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:C

原文指出 most members of the land community have no economic value,而完全依赖 economic motives 的体系因此不能恰当涵盖这些成员。正确项以 fails to account for 概括这种结构性遗漏,并以 lack commercial value 对 no economic value 作同义改写。

经济标准与遗漏对象双核匹配 直接用题干中的 economic motives 定位 第1段,再读取其后紧邻的 no economic value。随后只检查选项是否保留了两层关系:体系只认经济标准,以及群落成员因缺乏这种价值而被遗漏。能以同义表达同时覆盖两层关系的就是正确项。

  2. 第 2 段 定位词 songbirds early 20th century

The example of songbirds in the early 20th century illustrates that ________.

    • A insects would definitely destroy humanity without songbirds.
    • B scientists had successfully proved the economic value of all birds.
    • C the disappearance of songbirds was a natural economic process.
    • D conservation arguments were expected to demonstrate economic importance.
    • E economic validity is the only legitimate basis for conservation.
    • F the love for songbirds led to solid scientific discoveries.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:D

案例前先说人们会 invent excuses to give 受威胁对象 economic importance,案例后又总结 evidence had to be economic in order to be valid。正确项以 were expected to demonstrate 概括这种有效性要求,没有把 shaky evidence 进一步强化成原文未明说的 evidence manipulation。

例证框架句取交集 用 songbirds 定位 第2段 后,不必细究 insects 预测是否成立,只读案例前后的框架句:give it economic importance 与 evidence had to be economic。将两句取交集,即可判定强调 conservation argument 必须呈现 economic importance 的正确项。

  3. 第 4 段 定位词 more honest argument predators

What does the more honest argument suggest about predators?

    • A They preserve the health of game only by killing the physically weak.
    • B They prey exclusively on species considered worthless.
    • C They may be exterminated whenever their removal seems beneficial.
    • D They are valuable primarily because they benefit game management.
    • E They should not be wiped out for the sake of specific group interests.
    • F They are more important than other members of the community.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:E

原文说 no special interest has the right to exterminate them for the sake of benefit...to itself。正确项以 specific group interests 对 special interest 作语义改写,并以 should not be wiped out 对 no...right to exterminate 作符合原意的否定转述。

否定权限三要素匹配 用 more honest argument 定位 第4段 的转折句,然后只抓 no special interest has the right to exterminate 这一否定骨架。选项中同时保留特定利益主体、否定许可和消灭行为三项要素的就是正确项。

  4. 第 5 段 定位词 European forestry noncommercial tree species

Why are noncommercial tree species preserved in European forestry?

    • A They can eventually be sold as high-value timber crops.
    • B They grow much faster than commercial tree species.
    • C They enable Europeans to monopolize timber production.
    • D They make soil fertility unnecessary for forest flora and fauna.
    • E They are valued solely for their aesthetic beauty.
    • F They are recognized as members of the native forest community, and some help build soil fertility.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:F

该项严格对应原文两层信息:noncommercial tree species are recognized as members of the native forest community;moreover, some have a valuable function in building up soil fertility。some 保留了原文范围,没有把该功能扩大到所有树种。

成员身份与土壤功能并列核验 定位 第5段 后,只读取 Europe 所在句及 moreover 后一句,把信息压缩成 recognition 与 function 两栏。选项若同时保留 community membership、some 的范围以及 soil fertility 功能,即可判为正确项。

  5. 第 6 段 定位词 false assumption economic parts

What false assumption does an economically self-interested conservation system make?

    • A It assumes that the economic parts can function without the uneconomic parts.
    • B It assumes that every part of the land community has commercial value.
    • C It assumes that commercial and noncommercial elements are equally protected.
    • D It assumes that preserving all land-community elements maximizes economic profit.
    • E It assumes that the biotic clock can solve problems of economic self-interest.
    • F It assumes that uneconomic parts are more valuable than economic ones.
    显示答案与解析 收起答案与解析

    正确答案:A

该项直接改写原文 the economic parts of the biotic clock will function without the uneconomic parts,仅省略 metaphor 中的 of the biotic clock,不改变 economic 与 uneconomic parts 被错误割裂的核心关系。

作者开篇就直接 point out 一个 basic weakness,指出 conservation system 如果 based wholly on economic motives 就存在根本性问题,因为 most members of the land community 其实 have no economic value,但它们作为 biotic community 的 members 有权利 continuance,这里用 entitled to 强调了一种 intrinsic right 的概念。

这个 introductory paragraph 直接 establish 了整篇文章的 central argument,明确表达 economic-based conservation 是 fundamentally flawed 的,同时引入了 biotic community、stability、integrity 这些 key concepts,为后续的 supporting arguments 奠定 theoretical foundation。

    提出核心问题
  2. 分论点 P2

    鸣禽保护的历史案例分析

这里 shift to 一个 specific historical example,当 songbirds 被 threatened 的时候,scientists 不得不 invent excuses 来 give it economic importance,用 shaky evidence 声称 insects would eat us up if birds failed to control them,这个 case 完美 illustrate 了前面提到的 weakness:我们必须把 non-economic creatures 硬塞进 economic framework 才能 justify their protection。

这个 supporting paragraph 通过 historical case 来 demonstrate 引言中的 abstract claim 在 real world 中是如何 manifest 的,用 songbirds 这个 concrete example 让读者 see 经济导向保护的 absurdity,同时 'invent excuses' 和 'shaky evidence' 这些表达暗示这种 approach 是 intellectually dishonest 的。

    历史案例佐证
  3. 分论点 P3

    对鸣禽案例的反思与进步

作者用 'painful to read these roundabout accounts today' 表达对过去做法的 critique,然后指出现在的 progress:we have at least drawn nearer the point of admitting that birds should continue as a matter of intrinsic right,这里 'intrinsic right' 和 'regardless of economic advantage' 直接 echo 了 第1段 的核心观点,显示思想的 evolution。

这个 paragraph 的作用是 provide temporal contrast,通过 'today' vs 过去的对比来 show 我们正在 moving toward 一种 non-economic 的 conservation ethic,虽然 'we have no land ethic yet' 承认还未完全 achieve the ideal,但 'drawn nearer' 表明 progress is being made,这 reinforce 了主旨中 species deserve protection based on intrinsic right 的观点。

    思想进步体现
  4. 分论点 P4

    捕食性动物保护的平行案例

用 'a parallel situation' 明确表示这是另一个 similar case,讲 predatory mammals and fish-eating birds 也经历了同样的过程,biologists 曾 overwork evidence 说它们 preserve game health 或只捕食 worthless species,现在才听到 more honest argument 认为 predators are members of the community,no special interest has the right to exterminate them。

这个 paragraph extends the argument through parallelism,用 'time was' 和 'only in recent years' 的 temporal structure 再次 demonstrate 从 economic justification 到 intrinsic right recognition 的 shift,'more honest argument' 这个表达 reinforce 了经济导向论证的 dishonesty, multiple examples 的 accumulation 使主旨更 convincing。

    补充案例验证
  5. 分论点 P5

    森林树种保护的延伸案例

第三个 example 转到 tree species, some trees have been 'read out of the party' by economics-minded foresters 因为 grow too slowly or have low sale value,但在 ecologically more advanced 的 Europe, noncommercial tree species are recognized and preserved,而且 some have valuable function in soil fertility,这里 'interdependence' 的概念进一步 deepen the argument。

这个 paragraph 不仅 provide 第三个 example,还 introduce geographical comparison(Europe vs implied US)和 ecological advancement 的概念,'interdependence' 和 'constituent tree species, ground flora, and fauna' 这些表达 expand 了 argument 的 ecological dimension,暗示 holistic approach 的 necessity,使主旨的 ecological integrity 观点更 sophisticated。

    欧洲对比案例
  6. 结论 P6

    经济导向保护系统的根本性缺陷总结

用 'to sum up' 这个明确的 concluding signal 开头,重申 conservation system based solely on economic self-interest is hopelessly lopsided,总结它 tends to ignore and eliminate elements that lack commercial value but are essential,并指出它的 false assumption:economic parts 可以 function without uneconomic parts,这完美 echo 了 introduction 的 basic weakness。

这个 concluding paragraph synthesize 前面所有 examples 的 shared lesson,用 'hopelessly lopsided'、'eventually to eliminate'、'falsely assumes' 这些 strong evaluative language 来 crystallize the critique,'essential to healthy functioning' 和 'biotic clock' metaphor 将 argument 提升到 systemic level, make the final case that all species deserve protection 是 ecological necessity 而非 sentimental choice。

  1. 首段批判性陈述 P1

议论文的 thesis statement 通常在首段就明确提出 central argument,这篇文章开头直接指出 one basic weakness,这是典型的 problem-oriented opening,为整篇 critique 定下基调

  2. 平行举证结构 P2 P4 P5

第2、4、5段都采用了相同的 pattern:先提出某类生物 lack economic value,再说明人们如何 invent excuses 或 overwork evidence 来给它们 economic justification。这种 repetitive structure 强化了 the flawed logic of economic-based conservation

  3. 价值判断词标记 P3 P4

第3段的 painful to read 和第4段的 more honest argument 都在表达作者对 economic justification 的 critical attitude,这些 emotional or ethical assessments 揭示了作者真正支持的 value system:intrinsic right 而非 economic advantage

  4. 结论段强化表述 P6

第6段用 to sum up 明确标记这是 conclusion,然后用 solely 和 hopelessly lopsided 强化对 economic-only system 的 total rejection,最后用 essential 强调 non-economic elements 的 critical importance。这个 conclusion 直接呼应首段的 basic weakness,形成完整的 argumentative circle

  5. 对立价值体系识别 P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6

整篇文章建立在一个 clear dichotomy 上:economic-based conservation(flawed)与 intrinsic-right-based protection(correct)。从首段的 no economic value 到尾段的 economic vs. uneconomic parts,作者始终在 contrast 这两种 conservation philosophies,主旨就是 rejecting the former and advocating the latter

最后,文中明确描述这些动物 kill other animals 和 prey on species 的 behavior。三条线索层层递进,从结构暗示到词源关联再到行为证实。

    结构类比+词族联系+行为实证
  • lopsided 不平衡的、偏向一方的

我们从 negative context 入手,看到 lopsided 用来批评一个 solely based on one interest 的 system。随后作者的 explanation 明确指出这个 system 的 problem 是 ignore 和 eliminate 其他 elements,这是典型的 imbalance。最后通过 morphological clue,-sided 这个 component 提示我们这是关于 sides 或 balance 的描述。三条线索共同勾勒出'不平衡'这个 core meaning。

    语气定性+解释细化+词形锚定
  • exterminate 灭绝、彻底消灭

    首先从 ethical context 看,exterminate 被放在'no right to do'的框架下,并且针对的是整个 species,这表明它是一个 severe action。

在 the beginning of the century,科学家为了 justify 保护鸟类,fabricated 了一个 economic reason:insects would eat us up 如果没有 birds 来 control them。这个 concrete example 生动地 demonstrate 了 conservation system 基于 economic motives 的 fundamental flaw——我们必须 invent excuses 给 non-economic species 赋予 economic importance 才能保护它们。这个例证 powerfully supports 文章主旨:species 应该基于 intrinsic right 而非 economic value 被保护。

信号词 At the beginning of the century for example for instance to illustrate a case in point consider the case of take... as an example such as like

仿写: 在写作 argumentative essays 时,先提出 general claim,然后 introduce 一个 well-known or relatable example。使用 temporal markers(如 at the beginning of the century)来 establish context,描述 具体的 event or situation,最后 explicitly connect 这个 example 回到你的 main argument。模版:When [situation], [specific example]. Scientists/Experts [action taken] with [evidence/reason]. This demonstrates that [link back to thesis].

  • 举例论证

    P4

作者引入 predatory mammals and fish-eating birds 作为 another concrete example 来 reinforce 相同的 pattern。Time was when biologists 用 questionable evidence 证明这些 predators 有 economic value——它们 preserve game health 或只捕食 worthless species。这个 parallel case 进一步 illustrate 了 systematic problem:conservation decisions 被 economic considerations 所 dominate,而非基于 ecological integrity。通过展示 multiple instances of the same flawed logic,作者 strengthens 他的 argument 关于 current system 的 fundamental inadequacy。

信号词 At the beginning of the century for example for instance to illustrate a case in point consider the case of take... as an example such as like Time was when

仿写: 在写作 argumentative essays 时,先提出 general claim,然后 introduce 一个 well-known or relatable example。使用 temporal markers(如 at the beginning of the century)来 establish context,描述 具体的 event or situation,最后 explicitly connect 这个 example 回到你的 main argument。模版:When [situation], [specific example]. Scientists/Experts [action taken] with [evidence/reason]. This demonstrates that [link back to thesis].

  • 举例论证

    P5

作者用 tree species in forestry 作为 third example 来 complete 他的 argumentative pattern。Economics-minded foresters 将 slow-growing or low-value trees "read out of the party",但 European forestry 展示了 more ecologically advanced approach——认可 non-commercial species 作为 native community members。这个 example 不仅 illustrate 问题,还提供 positive alternative, showing that 更 holistic conservation approach 是 possible and beneficial(有些树种对 soil fertility 有 valuable function)。

  • 对比论证

    P5

作者在讨论 tree species 时 create 了一个 sharp contrast:economics-minded foresters(代表 outdated approach)versus European forestry(代表 ecologically advanced approach)。前者 eliminate slow-growing or low-value trees,后者 preserve non-commercial species as community members。这个 juxtaposition 非常 effective 地 highlight 了两种 conservation philosophies 的 difference, demonstrating that 基于 ecological integrity 的 system 是 more sophisticated and ultimately more beneficial(发现 soil fertility function)。Contrast 让 readers 清晰地 see 哪种 approach 更 reasonable。

信号词 In Europe, where in contrast on the other hand however whereas while unlike conversely by contrast on the contrary

仿写: 构建 effective contrast 时,选择 two clearly opposing examples or approaches。先 present 你要 criticize 的 approach(使用 negative connotations 的词),然后用 transitional contrast markers 引入 superior alternative。描述两者时使用 parallel structure 来 emphasize difference。模版:[Group A] [negative action/belief] because [flawed reasoning]. In contrast, [Group B], where [field] is more advanced, [positive action] as [better reasoning]. Moreover, [additional benefit discovered].

  • 类比论证

    P4

作者在 第4段 开头使用 "A parallel situation exists" 明确建立 analogy between songbirds case 和 predatory mammals/fish-eating birds case。两个 situations share identical logical structure:non-economic species 面临 threat, scientists 必须 fabricate economic justifications 来 protect them, evidence 必须是 economic 才 valid。通过展示 same flawed pattern 在 different contexts 中 repeat,作者 strengthen 他的 claim 这是 systemic problem 而非 isolated incident,证明 economic-based conservation 的 inadequacy 是 pervasive。

信号词 A parallel situation exists similarly likewise in the same way just as analogously correspondingly by the same token in like manner parallel to

仿写: 构建 effective analogy 时,先 establish first situation with clear details,然后用 explicit parallel markers 引入 second situation。确保两个 situations share fundamental structural similarities 而非仅 superficial resemblance。Highlight corresponding elements 在两个 scenarios 中,让 parallel 清晰可见。模版:[Situation A] shows [pattern/problem]. A parallel situation exists in respect of [Situation B]. [Corresponding element 1 in B], [corresponding element 2 in B]. Here again, [same conclusion/problem].

  • 因果论证

    P1 P6

在 第1段,作者建立 crucial causal relationship:if the stability of biotic community depends on its integrity,那么 all members(即使 no economic value)are entitled to continuance。这个 conditional reasoning 是文章的 logical foundation——它 establish 为什么 non-economic species 必须被保护。在 第6段,作者又提出 negative causal chain:economic-based system "tends to ignore, and thus eventually to eliminate" essential elements,最终导致 system dysfunction(economic parts cannot function without uneconomic parts)。这些 cause-effect relationships 构成文章的 logical skeleton。

信号词 if thus therefore consequently as a result because since so hence accordingly leads to causes results in tends to

仿写: 构建 strong causal argument 时,clearly state your condition or premise,然后用 causal connectors 引出 logical consequence。可以用 conditional structure(if...then)或 direct causal language(tends to...thus...eventually)。确保 causal link 是 logical and defensible。对于 negative consequences, build causal chains 展示 how initial problem leads to worse outcomes。模版:If [premise/condition], then [consequence]. / [Action] tends to [immediate effect], and thus eventually to [final outcome], [which/that] [further consequence].

  • 比喻修辞

    P5 P6

作者在 第5段 使用引号中的 metaphorical expression "read out of the party" 来 describe how tree species 被 exclude from conservation。这个 figurative language 原本指 political expulsion,用在这里 vividly convey 了 exclusion 的 arbitrary and unjust nature。Similarly,第6段 用 "biotic clock" 作为 metaphor 将 ecosystem 比作 clock mechanism,暗示各个 parts(economic and uneconomic)必须 work together 才能让整个 system function properly。这些 metaphors 让 abstract ecological concepts 变得更 concrete and relatable。

信号词 like as as if resemble 似乎 metaphorically speaking in a sense quotation marks signaling figurative use

仿写: 使用 effective metaphor 时,选择 familiar concept 来 illuminate unfamiliar one。确保 metaphor 的 connotations 支持你的 argument(如 "read out of the party" 暗示 exclusion 的 unfairness)。可以用 quotation marks 来 signal metaphorical usage。Build on metaphor 来 develop extended meaning(如 clock metaphor 暗示 interdependence)。模版:[Abstract concept] is like [familiar concept] - [具体的 corresponding elements]. This [metaphor] reveals that [insight about original concept].

  • 排比修辞

    P5 P6

在 第5段 结尾,作者使用 parallel structure 列举 forest 的 constituent elements:"its constituent tree species, ground flora, and fauna"。这个 three-part parallel construction 强调 ecosystem 的 complexity 和 interconnectedness。Similarly,第6段 使用 parallelism 来 list system's failures:"ignore... eventually eliminate... elements that lack commercial value, but that are essential"。这些 parallel structures create rhythm and emphasis, making the comprehensive nature of the problem 更加 apparent and forceful。

    信号词 comma-separated series and or both...and not only...but also either...or neither...nor

仿写: 构建 effective parallelism 时,使用 same grammatical structure for series of items(all nouns, all verb phrases, all clauses)。可以是 two-part, three-part(最常见), or longer series。用 commas and "and" 来 connect parallel elements。确保 each element add meaningful content 而非 redundant repetition。模版:[Item 1 structure], [Item 2 same structure], and [Item 3 same structure]. / [Action 1], and thus eventually to [Action 2], [elements that] [description 1], but that [description 2].

条件性推理 if unless provided that as long as when assuming that in case

    句中的 if 看似谨慎,实则暗示生物共同体的完整性确实关乎稳定;因此,无经济价值的物种并非可有可无,它们可能是生态系统正常运转的 hidden support,这直接强化了保护全部成员的必要性。

  • 人类偏爱左右保护

    P2
if we happen to love it, we invent excuses to give it economic importance

委婉表达与反讽 if we happen to love it if we happen to perhaps somehow apparently so-called it seems

    作者暗示,当一种动物受到保护,并不一定因为制度承认其应有权利,而可能只是因为人类恰好喜欢它;这种 love-driven protection 缺乏一致原则,也意味着不讨喜的物种更容易被牺牲。

  • 科学证据被功利绑架

    P2
some distinctly shaky evidence... The evidence had to be economic in order to be valid

贬义评价与强制情态 distinctly shaky;had to shaky weak dubious questionable had to must

    作者不是反对科学研究鸟类控制昆虫的功能,而是批评当时的科学家不得不把保护理由说成经济收益,哪怕证据 shaky;这表明经济主义不仅排斥物种,也扭曲了科学论证和公共价值判断。

  • 旧式辩护已显荒谬

    P3
It is painful to read these roundabout accounts today

情感评价与贬义措辞 painful;roundabout painful absurd ironic regrettable roundabout awkward

所谓 roundabout accounts 指的是人们不敢直接说“鸟有生存权”,只好绕道证明鸟能带来经济利益;作者借 painful 表达羞愧与批评,说明这种功利化辩护在今天看来既不坦诚,也不必要。

  • 观念进步仍不充分

    P3
We have no land ethic yet, but we have at least drawn nearer

转折与有限肯定 yet;at least;nearer yet but however at least to some extent nearer

作者承认社会开始接近 intrinsic right 的观念,但 no land ethic yet 明确说明完整的土地伦理尚未建立;这一让步使文章避免绝对化,同时强调改革仍有很长的 way to go。

  • 猛禽辩护同样失真

    P4
biologists somewhat overworked the evidence... It is only in recent years

程度缓和与限制性对比 somewhat overworked;only somewhat rather a little overworked exaggerated only

    作者暗示,过去生物学家为食肉动物和食鱼鸟类辩护时,也曾夸大它们的经济或狩猎价值;真正承认 predators 是共同体成员的 honest argument,直到近年才出现,说明功利思维长期支配了保护话语。

  • 价值标签服务于清除

    P4
they prey only on "worthless" species... exterminate them

引号标记与极端动词 "worthless";exterminate "worthless" "useful" "pest" so-called alleged exterminate

作者给 worthless 加引号,暗示所谓“无价值物种”并不是客观事实,而是人类中心主义的判断;一旦某物种被如此命名,特殊利益集团就可能以自身 benefit 为名要求清除它,这与 land ethic 完全冲突。

  • 林业把树木当作商品

    P5
been "read out of the party" by economics-minded foresters

隐喻性反讽与复合定语 "read out of the party";economics-minded "read out of the party" excluded cast out economics-minded profit-driven market-oriented

树木被“read out of the party”并非真的退出自然,而是被林业管理者从保护和经营计划中排除;作者借这一讽刺性隐喻指出,经济导向的 forestry 把森林降格为 timber crop,而不是相互依存的 living community。

  • 欧洲提供替代范式

    P5
In Europe, where forestry is ecologically more advanced

地域对比与评价性比较 In Europe;more advanced in contrast by comparison where more advanced better unlike

    作者把欧洲林业称为 ecologically more advanced,是在说明非商业树种得到保护并非不切实际的理想,而是已有可行的管理范式;这个例证增强了全文主张的现实可信度与说服力。

  • 非商业物种也有隐性功能

    P5
Moreover, some have been found to have a valuable function in building up soil fertility

递进补充与被动发现 Moreover;have been found moreover furthermore in addition besides have been found has been shown

    作者的深层意思是,市场售价低并不能证明树种无用,因为它们可能默默维持 soil fertility;这也反驳了以即时 sale value 决定存废的做法,并说明生态价值往往具有 indirect 和长期的特征。

  • 功利保护终将自我破坏

    P6
thus eventually to eliminate... essential to its healthy functioning... assumes, falsely

因果递进、强调与断言 thus eventually;essential;falsely thus therefore consequently eventually ultimately essential

    结尾把生态系统比作 biotic clock,暗示每个“无经济价值”的部件都可能是不可替代的齿轮;经济保护以为只保留 profitable parts 就能运转,这一假设被作者判为 falsely,因此全文最终落到生态完整性与内在权利的双重保护原则。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE · 作者态度

作者态度:消极批判

结论先行:本文作者态度为消极批判( Critical of economy-based conservation, advocating for ecological ethics)。下面是按步骤还原的判断过程与文中的态度信号词。

  1. 首句定位批判对象 P1

当作者用 'weakness'、'problem'、'flaw' 这类 negative words 来描述某个 system 或 idea 时,这是典型的 critical stance 信号。第一段的 'basic weakness' 表明作者不是在做 neutral description,而是在 expose a fundamental problem,这为整篇文章的 critical tone 定下了基调。

  2. 情感词汇聚集定性 P2 P3

在 formal academic writing 中,当作者 depart from neutral tone 使用 emotional vocabulary 时,这是 strong attitude indicator。'Painful' 是 subjective feeling word,'shaky' 暗示 unreliable,'roundabout' 表示 unnecessarily complicated。这些词 cluster together 就形成了 pattern of criticism,说明作者不仅 disagree with the approach,还对这种 intellectual dishonesty 感到 troubled。

  3. 时间对比中的价值偏向 P2 P3 P4

对比结构在议论文中是 powerful rhetorical device。当作者说 'Time was when biologists overworked the evidence',然后说 'It is only in recent years that we hear the more honest argument',这个 'more honest' 就是 key evaluative phrase。它不仅 criticize the past approach as dishonest,还 endorse the new direction。这种 before-after contrast with clear preference 是 advocacy 的典型标志。

  4. 批判中寻找建设性方案 P3 P4 P5

纯粹的 criticism 会让文章显得 one-sided,但当作者 combine criticism with positive alternatives,这说明他的态度是 reform-oriented rather than merely destructive。'Intrinsic right' 这个 phrase 特别重要,因为它 introduce 一个 ethical framework 来 replace economic framework。在 第5段 中提到 Europe's 'ecologically more advanced' approach 时,'more advanced' 是 clear endorsement。这些 positive references 说明作者在 advocate for a paradigm shift。

  5. 结论段强化态度验证 P6

Conclusion paragraph 是作者 最终 statement of position 的地方。'Hopelessly lopsided' 不是 mild criticism,而是 severe condemnation。'Falsely assumes' 直接指出 logical flaw。这种 intensified language in conclusion 确认了作者从头到尾的 critical stance 不是 academic exercise,而是 passionate advocacy。综合全文,作者的态度是 deeply critical of economic reductionism while advocating for ecological ethics。

文中的态度信号词

  • weakness P1

'Weakness' 这个词在 opening sentence 就 establish 了 critical framework。在议论文中,作者用 'basic weakness' 而不是 'characteristic' 或 'feature',immediately signal 他认为 economic-based system 有 fundamental problem。这种 negative judgment word 在 topic position 是 strong attitude marker。

同类词 flaw defect shortcoming limitation failing

  • painful P3

'Painful' 是 emotional response word,它 reveal 作者不只是 intellectually disagree,而是 emotionally troubled by past practices。在 academic writing 中使用这种 subjective feeling word 是 deliberate choice,意在 engage readers' emotions 并 create shared sense of wrongness。这比 neutral words like 'inaccurate' 更能 convey 作者的 strong disapproval。

同类词 troubling disturbing unfortunate regrettable distressing

  • shaky P2

'Shaky' 用来 modify 'evidence',这是 direct attack on the credibility of arguments。在 academic discourse 中,questioning evidence quality 是 fundamental way to undermine opposing views。作者用 'distinctly shaky' 而不只是 'shaky','distinctly' 这个 intensifier 加强了 negative judgment,说明他认为这些 evidence 明显 unreliable。

同类词 dubious questionable weak flimsy tenuous

  • hopelessly P6

'Hopelessly' 是 extreme negative intensifier,它 modify 'lopsided' 来表达 no possibility of redemption。在 conclusion 中使用这样 strong word 是 作者 final verdict,表明他认为 economic-based system 不是 needs improvement,而是 fundamentally unredeemable。这种 absolutist language 在议论文中 signal very strong attitude。

同类词 utterly completely totally entirely wholly

  • falsely P6

'Falsely' 直接 label 某个 assumption 为 false,这是 strongest form of logical criticism。作者说 'It assumes, falsely, that...' 是在 explicitly reject 对方的 core premise。在议论文中,directly calling something 'false' rather than 'questionable' or 'debatable' 表明 作者 confident in his opposition 而且 unwilling to grant any validity 给对方观点。

同类词 mistakenly erroneously incorrectly wrongly inaccurately

  • more honest P4

'More honest' 这个 comparative phrase 做了两件事:first,它 imply 之前的 arguments 是 dishonest;second,它 endorse 新的 argument as morally superior。在议论文中,使用 moral terminology like 'honest' 而不只是 logical terms like 'accurate' 说明作者在 make ethical judgment,不只是 technical evaluation。

同类词 more accurate more valid more sound more reasonable more genuine

GENRE · 速判体裁

30 秒判定这是一篇议论文

体裁决定读法与出题套路。以下判断步骤与标志词全部以本文为例,可直接迁移到其他考研英语 真题文章。

如何快速判断这是一篇议论文?

  1. 开篇即评判 P1

议论文的第一句One basic weakness in a conservation system...立刻指出了一个weakness,这是作者的critical judgment。说明文会说'A conservation system has these features',新闻报道会说'A new conservation policy was announced'。这种evaluative language是议论文的典型标志。

  2. 例证服务论点 P2 P4 P5

    第2段提到songbirds的例子,第4段讲predatory mammals的例子,第5段谈tree species的例子。这些都是用来support作者关于'economic-based conservation is flawed'的central argument。说明文会parallel地列举features without arguing,新闻会report events chronologically,而议论文会strategically选择examples来strengthen its position。

  3. 态度词汇密集 P2 P3 P6

    第3段中的painful to read、第6段中的hopelessly lopsided、falsely assumes这些表达都显示作者在actively criticizing一种观点并推动读者接受另一种观点。说明文保持neutral tone,新闻力求objective reporting,只有议论文会用这种emotionally charged language来persuade readers。

  4. 结尾强化论点 P6

    第6段以To sum up开头,然后explicitly restates核心论点:economic-based conservation system是hopelessly lopsided。这个conclusive paragraph直接告诉读者'我的argument是什么'。说明文的结尾通常是final piece of information,新闻结尾是least important details,而议论文结尾是strongest restatement of the thesis来leave a lasting impression。

  5. 四维度交叉验证 P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6

    本文完美符合这四个特征:开篇判断weakness,中间用三个examples支持论点,全文充满critical language,结尾明确总结。这个四步法能有效区分议论文与说明文(lacks evaluative stance)和新闻报道(focuses on events not arguments)。
