The Secret to Raising Smart Kids

I first began to investigate the basis of human motivation—and how people persevere after setbacks—as a psychology graduate student at Yale University in the 1960s. Animal experiments by psychologists at the University of Pennsylvania had shown that after repeated failures, most animals conclude that a situation is hopeless and beyond their control. After such an experience an animal often remains passive even when it can effect change—a state they called learned helplessness.

People can learn to be helpless, too. Why do some students give up when they encounter difficulty, whereas others who are no more skilled continue to strive and learn? One answer, I soon discovered, lay in people's beliefs about why they had failed.

In particular, attributing poor performance to a lack of ability depresses motivation more than does the belief that lack of effort is to blame. When I told a group of school children who displayed helpless behavior that a lack of effort led to their mistakes in math, they learned to keep trying when the problems got tough. Another group of helpless children who were simply rewarded for their success on easier problems did not improve their ability to solve hard math problems. These experiments indicated that a focus on effort can help resolve helplessness and generate success.

Later, I developed a broader theory of what separates the two general classes of learners—helpless versus mastery-oriented. I realized these different types of students not only explain their failures differently, but they also hold different "theories" of intelligence. The helpless ones believe intelligence is a fixed characteristic: you have only a certain amount, and that's that. I call this a "fixed mind-set(思维模式)." Mistakes crack their self-confidence because they attribute errors to a lack of ability, which they feel powerless to change. They avoid challenges because challenges make mistakes more likely. The mastery-oriented children, on the other hand, think intelligence is not fixed and can be developed through education and hard work. Such children believe challenges are energizing rather than intimidating(令人生畏); they offer opportunities to learn. Students with such a growth mind-set were destined(注定) for greater academic success and were quite likely to outperform their counterparts.

We validated these expectations in a study in which two other psychologists and I monitored 373 students for two years during the transition to junior high school, when the work gets more difficult and the grading more strict, to determine how their mind-sets might affect their math grades. At the beginning of seventh grade, we assessed the students' mind-sets by asking them to agree or disagree with statements such as "Your intelligence is something very basic about you that you can't really change." We then assessed their beliefs about other aspects of learning and looked to see what happened to their grades.

As predicted, the students with a growth mind-set felt that learning was a more important goal than getting good grades. In addition, they held hard work in high regard. They understood that even geniuses have to work hard. Confronted by a setback such as a disappointing test grade, students with a growth mind-set said they would study harder or try a different strategy. The students who held a fixed mind-set, however, were concerned about looking smart with less regard for learning. They had negative views of effort, believing that having to work hard was a sign of low ability. They thought that a person with talent or intelligence did not need to work hard to do well. Attributing a bad grade to their own lack of ability, those with a fixed mind-set said that they would study less in the future, try never to take that subject again and consider cheating on future tests.

Such different outlooks had a dramatic impact on performance. At the start of junior high, the math achievement test scores of the students with a growth mind-set were comparable to those of students who displayed a fixed mind-set. But as the work became more difficult, the students with a growth mind-set showed greater persistence. As a result, their math grades overtook those of the other students by the end of the first semester—and the gap between the two groups continued to widen during the two years we followed them.

A fixed mind-set can also hinder communication and progress in the workplace and discourage or ignore constructive criticism and advice. Research shows that managers who have a fixed mind-set are less likely to seek or welcome feedback from their employees than are managers with a growth mind-set.

How do we transmit a growth mind-set to our children? One way is by telling stories about achievements that result from hard work. For instance, talking about mathematical geniuses who were more or less born that way puts students in a fixed mind-set, but descriptions of great mathematicians who fell in love with math and developed amazing skills produce a growth mind-set.

In addition, parents and teachers can help children by providing explicit instruction regarding the mind as a learning machine. I designed an eight-session workshop for 91 students whose math grades were declining in their first year of junior high. Forty-eight of the students received instruction in study skills only, whereas the others attended a combination of study skills sessions and classes in which they learned about the growth mind-set and how to apply it to schoolwork. In the growth mind-set classes, students read and discussed an article entitled "You Can Grow Your Brain." They were taught that the brain is like a muscle that gets stronger with use and that learning prompts the brain to grow new connections. From such instruction, many students began to see themselves as agents of their own brain development. Despite being unaware that there were two types of instruction, teachers reported significant motivational changes in 27% of the children in the growth mind-set workshop as compared with only 9% of students in the control group.

Research is converging(汇聚) on the conclusion that great accomplishment and even genius are typically the result of years of passion and dedication and not something that flows naturally from a gift.

  3. P3

    The Power of Effort Attribution

Viewing failure as insufficient effort rather than low ability reduces helplessness and promotes success.

  4. P4

    Fixed Mindset versus Growth Mindset

Fixed and growth mindsets create contrasting responses to mistakes, challenges, and academic learning.

  5. P5

    Testing Mindsets over Time

  7. P7

    Persistence Produces Academic Gains

Greater persistence enabled growth-mindset students to surpass fixed-mindset students in math over time.

  8. P8

    Mindset in the Workplace

A fixed mindset can impede workplace progress by discouraging openness to feedback.

  9. P9

    Teaching Growth through Achievement Stories

Parents can foster a growth mindset by portraying achievement as the result of developed skill and effort.

  10. P10

Teaching Students That the Brain Can Grow

Teaching students that the brain can grow fosters motivation beyond study-skills training alone.

  11. P11

    Redefining Genius through Dedication

Great achievement and genius usually grow from long-term passion and dedication rather than natural gifts alone.

作者通过 animal experiments 引出 learned helplessness 这个 concept,然后 transition 到 human motivation 的研究,especially 关注 people 在 setbacks 后的 perseverance,这为整篇 article 的 main argument 奠定了 research foundation。

这个 opening paragraph 通过 scientific background 建立 credibility,同时 introduce 核心 research question:为什么 some people give up 而 others persevere?这直接 lead to 后续关于 growth mindset versus fixed mindset 的 discussion。

通过 school children experiments, author 发现 attributing failure to lack of effort rather than lack of ability 能够 improve motivation 和 performance。这个 finding 提供了 first piece of evidence 支持 intelligence 可以通过 effort 改变的 viewpoint。

这个 paragraph 是 first supporting point,通过 controlled experiment 证明 effort-based attribution 比 ability-based attribution 更 effective。它为后续 growth mindset theory 的 development 提供了 empirical foundation, showing that beliefs about failure 直接 impact learning outcomes。

Author 从 initial findings 发展出 broader theory, distinguishing between fixed mindset 和 growth mindset。Fixed mindset students 认为 intelligence is unchangeable 因此 avoid challenges,而 growth mindset students 相信 intelligence can be developed,所以 embrace challenges 并 destined for greater success。

这是 central theoretical framework 的 presentation, directly addressing the main thesis。它 explains the mechanism behind 为什么 some students persevere:不是 innate ability 而是 their beliefs about intelligence。这个 dichotomy 成为整篇 article 的 organizing principle,为后续 all evidence 和 implications 提供 conceptual structure。

通过 monitoring 373 students across two years during junior high transition, researchers validated the theory's predictions。Study design、measurement methods 和 anticipated correlations between mindsets and academic performance 都在这个 段落 中 established,为下一意群的 detailed results 做 preparation。

这个意群 introduces large-scale longitudinal evidence 来 validate theoretical predictions。它 strengthens the argument by showing the theory 不仅 explains past experiments 也能 predict real-world outcomes。The detailed methodology description 增强 credibility 并 prepares readers for the substantial findings in subsequent paragraphs。

研究 revealed sharp contrasts:growth mindset students prioritized learning over grades、valued hard work、和 responded to setbacks constructively,而 fixed mindset students focused on appearing smart、viewed effort negatively、和 adopted defeatist strategies like cheating when facing difficulties。这些 behavioral differences 直接 demonstrate mindsets 的 practical impact。

这个意群 provides rich qualitative evidence showing how mindsets manifest in actual student behaviors 和 attitudes。通过 detailed contrast,it makes the abstract theory concrete 和 relatable, helping readers understand not just that mindsets matter 而是 exactly how they shape responses to challenges。这 deepens the argument's persuasive power。

Quantitative results showed dramatic impact:尽管 initial test scores comparable, growth mindset students demonstrated greater persistence as work intensified,导致 their math grades overtook fixed mindset peers by first semester end 并且 gap continued widening over two years。这个 longitudinal pattern provides compelling evidence for mindset theory。

这个意群 delivers the crucial quantitative payoff of the longitudinal study, transforming qualitative observations into measurable outcomes。The progressive divergence over time 特别有力地 supports the main thesis:mindsets don't just correlate with performance, they drive it over time。这是 strongest empirical evidence in the entire argument。

作者 extends the argument beyond education to workplace contexts, showing that fixed mindset can hinder communication、discourage constructive criticism、和 limit managerial effectiveness。这个 generalization demonstrates theory's broader applicability 而非 just academic phenomenon。

这个 brief paragraph expands the argument's scope, showing mindset theory 不是 limited to students 而是 applies across life domains。这 increases relevance for broader audience 并 strengthens the argument by demonstrating consistent patterns in different contexts, suggesting fundamental psychological principles rather than context-specific phenomena。

作者 shifts from describing what mindsets are to how to cultivate them,提供 concrete strategies:讲述 achievement stories that emphasize effort over innate talent、teaching children about brain as learning machine、和 explicit growth mindset instruction。The eight-session workshop example demonstrates practical implementation 和 measurable results, with 27% versus 9% showing motivational improvements。

这两段 transition from theoretical understanding to practical application, answering the implicit question: "So what can we do about it?" 在 argumentative essays 中,这种 solution-oriented section is crucial for making research actionable。The intervention study provides both具体 methods 和 evidence of effectiveness, completing the argument by showing theory 不仅 explains phenomena 也 enables positive change。

最后一段 delivers powerful concluding statement:research is converging on the conclusion that great accomplishment 和 even genius typically result from years of passion and dedication,不是 something that flows naturally from a gift。这个 summary reinforces the entire argument's central message 并 provides memorable takeaway。

这个 conclusion provides definitive closure by stating the argument's ultimate implication in broadest terms。It 不仅 summarizes findings 也 makes bold claim about nature of genius itself, connecting individual research to larger scientific consensus ("research is converging")。这 elevates the argument from specific mindset studies to fundamental truth about human potential, giving readers powerful final message。

议论文的 opening 通常会 set up the framework,通过 background information 或者 historical context 来 lead into the main argument。本文首段通过 animal experiments 和 learned helplessness 这个 concept 来 introduce the broader question about human motivation,为后续的 thesis statement 做铺垫。

议论文在 establishing context 之后会有 pivotal paragraphs 来 present the core argument。这些段落常用 'I realized'、'I discovered'、'the key difference is' 等 phrases 来 signal a major claim。本文第 4 段通过 'I developed a broader theory' 和 contrast between 'helpless versus mastery-oriented' learners 来 crystallize the main argument about fixed versus growth mindset。

议论文会用 substantial evidence 来 validate the central argument。本文第 5-7 段 describe a longitudinal study,通过 tracking 373 students 来 demonstrate that growth mindset leads to better performance。这些 detailed findings 不是 main thesis 本身,而是 serve to prove the thesis。如果多个段落都在 providing evidence for the same concept,那个 concept 就是 main point。

议论文的 concluding section 会 synthesize previous points 并 emphasize the broader significance。本文最后几段 discuss how to transmit growth mindset(第 9-10 段)和 make a sweeping conclusion(第 11 段)about accomplishment being result of effort not gift。这种 from specific research to general principle 的 movement 是在 reinforcing the core message。

本文从 learned helplessness(第 1 段)到 effort attribution(第 3 段)到 fixed/growth mindset theory(第 4 段)到 empirical validation(第 5-7 段)到 practical application(第 9-10 段)到 universal principle(第 11 段),所有内容都围绕 one core idea:intelligence is malleable through effort,and mindset determines learning outcomes。

最后,第3段 的 experimental results 用 'keep trying when problems got tough' 这个 concrete expression 诠释了这个 abstract concept。

从 syntactic structure 看,'attribute...to' 与 'to blame' 在 parallel construction 中出现,两者都表达 causality。从 discourse coherence 角度,第2段 提出 'beliefs about why they had failed' 这个 central question,第3段 立即用 attributing 来回应,说明这个词正是描述 people 如何 explain causes 的 cognitive process。从 collocation pattern 看,'attribute X to Y' 这个 structure 在全文中反复出现,X 总是 negative outcome(poor performance, errors, bad grade),Y 总是 perceived cause(lack of ability, lack of effort)。

Validate 在这个 chain 中的 role 是 bridge theory and practice。

从 immediate context 分析,第8段 讨论 fixed mind-set 在 workplace 的 negative effects,hinder 作用于 communication and progress 这些 positive elements,context 暗示 negative impact。 从 global argumentation 看,全文的 thesis 是 contrasting two mind-sets 的 outcomes,hinder 在描述 fixed mind-set 的 negative side 时出现,对应 growth mind-set 带来的 promotion 和 success。

从 experimental design 的 contrast 看,explicit instruction group 获得了 more detailed and comprehensive teaching,与 control group 的 simple approach 形成对照。

这个concrete example为后续discussion提供了scientific foundation,让abstract theory变得tangible and credible。

信号词 experiments showed research demonstrates studies indicate for instance for example such as a case in point to illustrate evidence shows data reveals

仿写: 当你want to establish某个psychological or behavioral pattern时,可以从scientific research或real-life observation入手。Structure你的example时要follow这个pattern: 先present the study/case → 然后highlight key findings → 最后connect到你的main argument。 Research/Studies by [source] demonstrated that [specific finding]. This phenomenon, called [concept name], shows that [interpretation linking to your thesis].'

通过juxtapose这两种learners的beliefs, behaviors, and outcomes,作者让thesis变得crystal clear: mindset determines success。这种sharp contrast不仅highlight了growth mindset的advantages,还reveal了fixed mindset的具体harm, making the argument both compelling and actionable。

信号词 whereas on the other hand in contrast however but while unlike conversely alternatively different from as opposed to

仿写: 构建powerful contrast时要ensure你的two sides是truly comparable but distinctly different。Follow这个structure: 先establish第一个type的characteristics → 用transition words like 'on the other hand' or 'in contrast' 引入对立面 → 然后用parallel structure来present对应的features,这样differences更striking。 [Group A] believe [characteristic 1] and thus [behavior 1]. In contrast, [Group B] view [opposite characteristic] and consequently [opposite behavior]. Such differences lead to [contrasting outcomes].' 确保contrast serves你的thesis by showing哪个approach更superior或problematic。

    P3 P4 P6

第3段展示了clear cause-effect chain: attributing failure to lack of ability → depressed motivation vs. attributing failure to lack of effort → continued trying。这个causal logic是文章argument的foundation, establishing that beliefs about failure直接determine behavioral outcomes。第4段 further develops这个causality by explaining fixed mindset → mistakes crack confidence → avoid challenges这个downward spiral,以及growth mindset → view challenges as opportunities → greater success这个virtuous cycle。这种cause-and-effect reasoning让abstract mindset theory变成predictable and logical consequences,强化了changing mindset能change outcomes的core message。

信号词 because as a result consequently therefore thus hence leads to results in due to causes stems from triggers brings about

仿写: Building strong causal arguments时要clearly identify你的cause和effect,然后explain the mechanism connecting them。Avoid simple 'A causes B' statements; instead说明why A leads to B through what process。Structure建议: '[Cause] leads to [immediate effect] because [mechanism]. This in turn results in [ultimate outcome].' 可以use words like 'because', 'as a result', 'consequently', 'therefore'来signal causal relationships。 Attributing [event] to [factor A] depresses [outcome] more than attributing it to [factor B] because [psychological/logical mechanism]. When [specific intervention], [subjects] learned to [new behavior], leading to [improved result].'

    P5 P10

第5段中作者cite了specific study details - 'we assessed the students' mindsets by asking them to agree or disagree with statements such as "Your intelligence is something very basic about you that you can't really change."' 这个direct quotation of研究instrument不仅增加transparency,还让readers能exactly understand how mindset was measured。通过quote actual assessment question, argument gains methodological credibility。这种precise citation让abstract concept 'fixed mindset'有了operational definition, making研究findings更trustworthy and replicable。

信号词 such as according to as stated in the words of quoted cited noted that observed that argued that claimed that demonstrated that

仿写: Using quotations effectively时要select那些truly add value的quotes - 要么provide authority,要么express某个idea better than you could paraphrase。Structure应该是: introduce the source → present the quotation → explain its significance to your argument。 To assess [concept], we/researchers asked participants to [action] such as "[exact quote]." This measurement revealed that [interpretation linked to thesis].' 记住quotation本身不够 - 你必须explain why it matters and how it supports your point。Avoid让quotes speak for themselves; always provide context and analysis。

    P10

第10段中出现striking metaphor: 'the brain is like a muscle that gets stronger with use.' 通过link brain development到familiar experience of muscle building,这个metaphor让growth mindset的biological basis变得tangible and believable。它不仅simplify complex neuroscience,还provide a motivating image - just as people accept muscles grow through exercise,这个metaphor suggests intelligence同样能通过effort来develop, directly supporting文章的core thesis。这个metaphor的power在于它creates a concrete mental model that students can apply to自己的learning。

信号词 like as is resembles similar to comparable to metaphorically speaking in the same way just as mirrors parallels

仿写: Crafting effective metaphors时要choose familiar source domain来explain unfamiliar target domain。Your metaphor应该highlight relevant similarities while不misleading readers about important differences。Structure建议: '[Abstract concept] is like [concrete, familiar thing] that [shared characteristic relevant to your point].' The [concept] is like a [familiar object/process] that [behavior/property]. Just as [familiar thing] [does X when Y happens], [your concept] [corresponding behavior under similar conditions].' Ensure你的metaphor isn't just decorative - 它应该genuinely help readers grasp your argument's essence。Follow up by explaining how这个comparison applies to your specific context。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
Animal experiments... most animals conclude that a situation is hopeless... remain passive even when it can effect change

(Analogy) Animal experiments Similarly Likewise Just as Parallel to

    P2
Why do some students give up... whereas others who are no more skilled continue to strive and learn?

(Contrast) whereas others who are no more skilled whereas while on the contrary no more... than contrast with

    P3
Another group... who were simply rewarded for their success... did not improve their ability

(Negative Contrast) simply rewarded... did not improve did not failed to instead of rather than merely

    P4
Mistakes crack their self-confidence because they attribute errors to a lack of ability

(Metaphor) Mistakes crack their self-confidence crack shatter fuel paralyze poison

    P6
They understood that even geniuses have to work hard.

(Concession & Emphasis) even geniuses even including not to mention regardless of no matter

    P8
A fixed mind-set can also hinder communication and progress in the workplace

(Causal Link) hinder communication and progress hinder lead to result in prevent undermine

    P10
the brain is like a muscle that gets stronger with use

(Simile) brain is like a muscle like as if compare to is similar to resemble

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

Neutral authors 会 present both sides equally,而 advocacy-oriented authors 会 spend more space on 支持自己观点的 evidence,并用 emotionally charged language 来 amplify 某些 findings。这里作者明显在 building a case for growth mindset。

当作者用'we should''can help''one way is'这类 directive language 时,他们已经从 observer 变成 advocate。

这里'great accomplishment'和'passion and dedication'的 juxtaposition 与'not something that flows naturally from a gift'的对比,是在 reinforce growth mindset 的核心观点。

  • help resolve P3

'Help resolve'是典型的 solution-oriented language,表明作者认为 focus on effort 是一个 positive intervention,能够 address helplessness 这个 problem。

  • destined for P4

同类词 bound to likely to tend to prone to guaranteed to

  • dramatic impact P7

同类词 significant effect profound influence remarkable difference substantial change striking result

  • hinder P8

这个词的使用 reveals 作者对 fixed mindset 的 critical stance,与前文对 growth mindset 的 endorsement 形成 sharp contrast,进一步 confirms 作者的 advocacy for growth mindset。

同类词 impede obstruct hamper inhibit undermine

  • can help P9

'Can help'出现在作者 shift 到 prescriptive section 的时候,直接 addressing parents and teachers,告诉他们 what they are able to do。这个 modal verb 'can' combined with 'help' 表达了 possibility and agency,是作者 empowering readers to take action 的 way,典型的 advocacy language。

同类词 can assist can support can enable can facilitate able to improve

  • converging on P11

'Converging on'是一个 strong evidential phrase,表示 multiple lines of research 都在 point to 同一个 conclusion。

同类词 pointing to leading to indicating demonstrating confirming

说明文的 opening 通常是 objective facts 或者 definitions,新闻报道则是 who/what/when/where 的 lead paragraph。而这篇文章的 第1段 直接以 'I first began to investigate' 开头,明确展现了 author's personal research journey,这是典型的 argumentative writing 特征,为后续的 thesis statement 做铺垫。

第2段 提出了 'Why do some students give up when they encounter difficulty, whereas others who are no more skilled continue to strive and learn?'

第2段 末尾的 'One answer, I soon discovered, lay in people's beliefs about why they had failed' 就是 author's thesis 的雏形,第4段 进一步 elaborate 成 'different types of students hold different theories of intelligence'。

第3段、第5段、第7段、第10段 都 详细描述了 specific experiments 和 studies,比如 'we monitored 373 students for two years'、'I designed an eight-session workshop for 91 students'。

说明文会 objectively describe different types,新闻会 report different sides,但议论文会 use contrast to strengthen its position。

第9段、第10段 转向 'How do we transmit a growth mindset to our children?',提供 concrete strategies 如 'telling stories about achievements'、'providing explicit instruction'。

  7. 这篇文章完整展现了 argumentative essay 的 structure:从 personal research experience (credibility) 到 central question (problem),从 thesis about mindset theory (position) 到 multiple experiments (evidence),从 contrasting two mindsets (dialectical reasoning) 到 practical strategies for parents and teachers (call to action)。Every element serves the purpose of persuasion,这与说明文的 informative purpose 和新闻报道的 reporting purpose 有本质区别。
