Some College Students Are Angry That They Have to Pay to Do Their Homework

Digital learning systems now charge students for access codes needed to complete coursework, take quizzes, and turn in homework. As universities go digital, students are complaining of a new hit to their finances that's replacing—and sometimes joining—expensive textbooks: pricey online access codes that are required to complete coursework and submit assignments.

The codes—which typically range in price from $80 to $155 per course—give students online access to systems developed by education companies like McGraw Hill and Pearson. These companies, which long reaped big profits as textbook publishers, have boasted that their new online offerings, when pushed to students through universities they partner with, represent the future of the industry.

But critics say the digital access codes represent the same profit-seeking ethos(观念) of the textbook business, and are even harder for students to opt out of. While they could once buy second-hand textbooks, or share copies with friends, the digital systems are essentially impossible to avoid.

"When we talk about the access code we see it as the new face of the textbook monopoly(垄断), a new way to lock students around this system," said Ethan Senack, the higher education advocate for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, to BuzzFeed News. "Rather than $250 (for a print textbook) you're paying $120," said Senack. "But because it's all digital it eliminates the used book market and eliminates any sharing and because homework and tests are through an access code, it eliminates any ability to opt out."

Sarina Harper, a 19-year-old student at Virginia Tech, was faced with a tough dilemma when she first started college in 2015—pay rent or pay to turn in her chemistry homework. She told BuzzFeed News that her freshman chemistry class required her to use Connect, a system provided by McGraw Hill where students can submit homework, take exams and track their grades. But the code to access the program cost $120—a big sum for Harper, who had already put down $450 for textbooks, and had rent day approaching.

She decided to wait for her next work-study paycheck, which was typically $150–$200, to pay for the code. She knew that her chemistry grade may take a dive as a result. "It's a balancing act," she said. "Can I really afford these access codes now?" She didn't hand in her first two assignments for chemistry, which started her out in the class with a failing grade.

The access codes may be another financial headache for students, but for textbook businesses, they're the future. McGraw Hill, which controls 21% of the higher education market, reported in March that its digital content sales exceeded print sales for the first time in 2015. The company said that 45% of its $140 million revenue in 2015 "was derived from digital products."

A Pearson spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that "digital materials are less expensive and a good investment" that offers new features, like audio texts, personalized knowledge checks and expert videos. Its digital course materials save students up to 60% compared to traditional printed textbooks, the company added. McGraw Hill didn't respond to a request for comment, but its CEO David Levin told the Financial Times in August that "in higher education, the era of the printed textbook is now over."

The textbook industry insists the online systems represent a better deal for students. "These digital products aren't just mechanisms for students to submit homework, they offer all kinds of features," David Anderson, the executive director of higher education with the Association of American Publishers, told BuzzFeed News. "It helps students understand in a way that you can't do with print homework assignments."

David Hunt, an associate professor in sociology at Augusta University, which has rolled out digital textbooks across its math and psychology departments, told BuzzFeed News that he understands the utility of using systems that require access codes. But he doesn't require his students to buy access to a learning program that controls the class assignments. "I try to make things as inexpensive as possible," said Hunt, who uses free digital textbooks for his classes but designs his own curriculum. "The online systems may make my life a lot easier but I feel like I'm giving up control. The discussions are the things where my expertise can benefit the students most."

A 20-year-old junior at Georgia Southern University told BuzzFeed News that she normally spends $500–$600 on access codes for class. In one case, the professor didn't require students to buy a textbook, just an access code to turn in homework. This year she said she spent $900 on access codes to books and programs. "That's two months of rent," she said. "You can't sell any of it back. With a traditional textbook you can sell it for $30–$50 and that helps to pay for your new semester's books. With an access code, you're out of that money."

Benjamin Wolverton, a 19-year-old student at the University of South Carolina, told BuzzFeed News that "it's ridiculous that after paying tens of thousands in tuition we have to pay for all these access codes to do our homework." Many of the access codes he's purchased have been required simply to complete homework or quizzes. "Often it's only 10% of your grade in class." he said. "You're paying so much money for something that hardly affects your grade—but if you didn't have it, it would affect your grade enough. It would be bad to start out at a B or C." Wolverton said he spent $500 on access codes for digital books and programs this semester.

Harper, a poultry(家禽) science major, is taking chemistry again this year and had to buy a new access code to hand in her homework. She rented her economics and statistics textbooks for about $20 each. But her access codes for homework, which can't be rented or bought second-hand, were her most expensive purchases: $120 and $85.

She still remembers the sting of her first experience skipping an assignment due to the high prices. "We don't really have a missed assignment policy," she said. "If you miss it, you just miss it. I just got zeros on a couple of first assignments. I managed to pull everything back up. But as a scared freshman looking at their grades, it's not fun."

  1. P1

A New Cost of Digital Learning

Required digital access codes create a new financial burden for college students.

  2. P2

    Publishers' Digital Future

Education publishers profit from access codes and promote them as the future of learning.

  3. P3

    No Way to Opt Out

Critics argue that digital access codes preserve textbook monopolies and eliminate cheaper alternatives.

  4. P4

    The Digital Textbook Monopoly

An advocate argues that access codes create a digital textbook monopoly despite lower upfront prices.

  5. P5

    Rent or Homework?

A student faced a choice between paying rent and buying an access code for chemistry homework.

  6. P6

    The Academic Cost of Waiting

Unable to pay immediately, Harper missed assignments and began chemistry with a failing grade.

  7. P7

    Students Pay, Publishers Gain

While access codes burden students, digital products have become highly profitable for textbook companies.

  8. P8

    The Publishers' Defense

Publishers defend digital materials as cheaper, feature-rich, and the replacement for print textbooks.

  9. P9

    More Than Homework Tools

The publishing industry argues that digital systems improve learning rather than merely collect homework.

  10. P10

    A Teacher's Alternative

A professor rejects required access-code systems to keep courses affordable and retain teaching control.

  11. P11

    Money That Cannot Be Recovered

A student criticizes access codes because their high cost cannot be recovered through resale.

  12. P12

    Paying to Protect a Grade

Students object to paying costly access-code fees for assignments that still pressure their grades.

  13. P13

    Codes Cost More Than Rentals

Harper finds nontransferable access codes more expensive than rentable textbooks.

  14. P14

    The Lasting Sting of Zeroes

High access-code prices caused Harper missed assignments, zero grades, and lasting anxiety.

这个 lead paragraph 直接 present 了 the central issue:universities 正在 shifting to digital learning systems, students 被 required 购买 expensive access codes 来 complete coursework,这 creates a new financial burden that's replacing 甚至 adding to 传统的 textbook costs

作为 news report 的 opening,这个 paragraph 遵循 inverted pyramid structure, immediately present 了 the most important information:digital access codes 成为 students 的 new financial challenge, establishing 整篇 article 要 explore 的 central conflict

这两个 paragraphs provide specific details about the issue:第2段 explains the pricing($80-$155)和 companies involved(McGraw Hill, Pearson),第3段 introduces criticism,指出 digital codes represent the same profit-seeking approach 并且 harder to opt out of compared to traditional textbooks

Following the lead,这个 section provide necessary context and specifics that flesh out the initial claim。News reports 需要 offer concrete information(prices, company names)和 introduce opposing perspectives(critics' view)来 establish credibility and present a more complete picture of the controversy

这个 paragraph features a direct quote from Ethan Senack,an expert from U.S. Public Interest Research Group,他 articulate 了 the monopoly concern in detail, explaining how access codes eliminate the used book market 和 students' ability to opt out,用 "new face of textbook monopoly" 这样的 phrase 来 characterize the problem

News reports 常 use expert testimony 来 add authority and depth to the critique。这个 extended quotation not only reinforces the criticism mentioned earlier 而且 provides a more systematic analysis of why digital codes are problematic, helping readers understand the structural nature of the issue rather than seeing it as merely a price complaint

这两段 present Sarina Harper's story as a concrete example:她 faced a dilemma between paying rent or buying the access code($120),chose to wait for her paycheck,导致 her chemistry grade started with failing marks。这个 narrative with specific details($450 for textbooks, $150-$200 paycheck)makes the abstract problem tangible and relatable

News reports 使用 human interest stories 来 humanize statistical or abstract issues。Harper's case puts a face on the problem, demonstrating real-world consequences(failing grades, financial stress)和 difficult choices students must make,这 creates emotional resonance and helps readers understand the practical impact beyond mere numbers

这三段 present the industry's defense:第7段 provides business context(McGraw Hill's digital sales exceeding print),第8段 quotes Pearson's justification(less expensive, better features)和 McGraw Hill CEO's claim that printed textbooks are "now over",第9段 features industry association's argument that digital products offer benefits beyond homework submission

Balanced news reporting 需要 present multiple perspectives。这个 section shifts focus to industry representatives' viewpoint, allowing publishers to defend their practices by emphasizing benefits(cost savings, enhanced features)和 framing digital transition as inevitable progress。这 ensures the article isn't one-sided and lets readers evaluate competing claims

这段 introduces David Hunt, a professor who represents a middle ground:他 understands the utility of access code systems 但 chooses not to require them for his classes, preferring free digital textbooks and custom curriculum。他的 comment "I feel like I'm giving up control" reveals concerns about pedagogical autonomy that differ from both industry and student perspectives

这个 paragraph adds nuance by presenting someone who isn't purely opposed or supportive。Hunt's perspective shows that the issue isn't simply students versus publishers—there are educators making conscious choices about how to navigate this landscape,认识到 trade-offs between convenience and control。这 complexity enriches the report beyond binary opposition

这三段 return to student experiences with two more cases:一个 Georgia Southern student who spends $500-$600 per term 和 cannot resell anything,Benjamin Wolverton who describes paying for codes that barely affect grades as "ridiculous"。Harper reappears in 第13段-14,showing continued financial strain(new $120 code)和 lasting impact of that first failing experience

After presenting industry defense and middle-ground perspective, the article returns to students with additional examples that reinforce the opening concern。这种 circular structure is common in news features:start with the problem, explore various angles, then return to human impact with accumulated understanding。The multiple voices(three different students)create a pattern showing this isn't isolated complaint but widespread experience

MAIN IDEA ·

这篇文章的 title 用了 angry 这个带有强烈 emotion 的词,配合 have to pay to do homework 的表述,immediately signals 这是一个关于 financial burden 和 unfairness 的批判性报道。

第3段 的 'But critics say' 是一个 clear signal,表示文章正在 present an alternative perspective 来 challenge 前面提到的 industry claims。

如果一篇文章 invest significant space 在 detailed personal narratives,这表明作者试图 evoke empathy 并 make the issue relatable。第5段-6 不只是说 students struggle,而是 show us Sarina's specific dilemma:她必须 wait for paycheck,导致 failing grade at the start。

虽然这篇文章 include industry perspectives 以保持 journalistic balance,但这些 defenses 被 positioned in the middle sections(第7段-9)而非 conclusion,且使用较为 dry、corporate language('digital products', 'good investment', 'executive director')。相比之下,student voices 使用更 emotional 和 relatable language('ridiculous', 'it's not fun', 'tough dilemma')。这种 asymmetry in presentation 表明文章的 sympathies lie with students,而 industry defense 更像是 obligatory inclusion for balance 而非 genuine counterargument。

这一步不是 mechanical summary,而是 synthesis:要识别 which elements 是 central(core problem)、which 是 supporting(evidence and context)、which 是 peripheral(background information)。在这篇文章中,central elements 是:students' financial burden + required access codes + replacing textbooks + monopoly structure。Supporting elements 是:specific prices、personal stories、company profits。Peripheral elements 是:individual company names、specific features of digital systems。Final thesis 应该 integrate central elements 并用 supporting elements 来 validate。

MAIN IDEA ·

College students face a new financial burden as universities increasingly require paid digital access codes for coursework, replacing traditional textbooks. These codes, costing $80-$155 per course, create a monopoly that eliminates second-hand options while education companies profit from the shift to digital learning systems.

其次,critics 的 negative tone 和 the same... of the textbook business 的 comparison 表明这是 textbook industry 一直具有的某种 problematic characteristic。 综合这三点,我们可以推断 ethos 指的是一种 guiding philosophy 或 fundamental value system,在这个 context 中,specifically 指 textbook business 那种 prioritizing profits over students' interests 的 operating principle 或 belief system。

从 temporal aspect 看,present perfect + long 强调这是一个 prolonged accumulation process。从 metaphorical perspective 看,reap 保留了 agricultural harvesting 的 imagery, suggesting effortless or abundant collection。Combining 这三个 dimensions,我们得出:reap 在这里表示 companies 长期、大量地 obtained profits,带有 easily harvesting 的 connotation,暗示这些 profits came relatively easily,就像 farmers gathering mature crops。

从 第3段 的 contrast structure,我们知道 opt out 与 avoid 有 semantic overlap。从 第4段 的 eliminate ability 结构,我们确认 opt out 是一个 voluntary action,是 students 原本可以 choose to do 的事。从 phrasal verb structure 看,out 的 directional meaning 表明这是一种 withdrawal 或 choosing not to participate。综合起来,opt out 的 core meaning 是 choose not to participate in 或 voluntarily withdraw from something, emphasizing the element of choice 和 deliberate non-participation。

破折号后的 appositive structure 直接 defines dilemma 为 a binary choice between two options。Harper 后续的 struggles 和 balancing act metaphor demonstrate 这不是 simple choice,而是一个 situation where both options lead to negative consequences。从 morphological hint 看,di- prefix 呼应了这种 two-way split。综合这三个 angles, dilemma 的 precise meaning 是: a difficult situation requiring choice between two (or more) undesirable alternatives,其中 key semantic features 包括 difficulty, choice requirement, 和 lack of clearly good option。

从 contrast structure 看,utility 是 something positive about the systems,但 needs to be balanced against negatives like cost and control。从 concrete example (make life easier) 看,utility 指 practical, functional benefits。从 morphology 看,-ity suffix 表示这是 abstract quality of being useful。整合这三点,utility 在这个 context 中的 core meaning 是: the practical usefulness 或 functional value of something, emphasizing tangible benefits rather than theoretical advantages。在 academic 和 technical contexts, utility often refers to practical applicability 和 effectiveness in achieving goals。

从 temporal marker (still remembers) 看,这种 impact has enduring quality, like physical sting pain lingers。从 metaphorical mapping 看,sting preserves 其 basic meaning of sharp, sudden pain,但 transfers from physical to emotional domain。综合这些,the sting of her experience 指这个 experience 带来的 sharp, painful emotional impact that was memorable and lasted over time,就像 physical sting 一样 sharp and unforgettable。

这些 first-person accounts 让 financial burden 不再是 abstract concept,而是变成了 Sarina Harper 面临的 real dilemma——pay rent or pay for homework。通过 Ethan Senack 对 textbook monopoly 的 sharp criticism 和 students 的 personal struggles,文章将 digital access codes 的 predatory nature 展现得 extremely vivid,让 readers 能够 empathize with 这些 college students 的 困境,从而 reinforce 了 main thesis 关于 new financial burden 的 论述。

信号词 said told according to stated explained noted pointed out remarked commented described

比如用 student quotes 来 show personal impact,用 advocate quotes 来 provide expert analysis,用 company spokesperson quotes 来 present opposing views。 关键是让 each quote add new dimension 而不是 merely repeat information。

Price range ($80-$155)、market share (21%)、revenue figures ($140 million)、student expenses ($500-$900) 这些 concrete data points 将 abstract burden 转化为 measurable reality。 Harper's expenses ($450 for textbooks + $120 for code versus $20 textbook rentals)的 sharp contrast,用 hard numbers 证明了 digital monopoly 的 economic impact,让 article's argument 变得 irrefutable and data-driven。

信号词 $ % million percent approximately about nearly over up to range from

首先 cite precise figures (不说 expensive,说 $120),然后 create comparisons 来 highlight significance (新成本 versus 旧成本),最后 connect numbers to human impact ($900 equals two months rent)。模版:「[Introduce issue] + [Present specific data] + [Provide comparative context] + [Link to human consequence]」。关键是 avoid data dumping——每个 number 都要 serve a clear rhetorical purpose, preferably paired with human stories 来 balance cold statistics with warm narrative。

    P3 P4 P8 P10 P11 P12

文章 systematically construct 了 multiple layers of contrast 来 expose the problem。第3段 中的 past versus present (second-hand textbooks versus digital codes),第4段 中的 price comparison ($250 print textbook versus $120 digital 但 no resale value),第8段 中 companies' claims (less expensive、better investment) versus 第11段、第12段 中 students' reality ($900 annual cost、can't resell)。这些 sharp contrasts 揭示了 digital monopoly 的 deceptive nature——表面上 cheaper,实际上 more restrictive and expensive。通过 juxtapose industry rhetoric 和 student experiences,文章让 readers clearly see 谁在 profit 谁在 suffer。

信号词 but however while whereas in contrast on the other hand unlike rather than instead of compared to

仿写: 构建 effective contrast 需要 find meaningful points of comparison。首先 identify what's being compared——时间维度 (before/after)、立场维度 (company claims versus user experience)、选择维度 (old option versus new option)。然后 use parallel structure 来 make contrast clear。模版:「[Establish baseline/past situation] + [Present new situation with similar structure] + [Highlight key differences] + [Reveal implications]」。注意 use transition words (but、however、while、in contrast) 来 signal shifts。最 powerful 的 contrast 往往 combine multiple dimensions——比如 simultaneously show price differences AND freedom differences。

    P1 P2 P7

第1段 作为 opening paragraph 精准地 establish context——universities going digital、students complaining、new financial burden。这个 background setting 不仅 introduce the topic,更重要的是 frame the issue 为 systemic shift (universities go digital) 而非 isolated incident。第2段 进一步 provide industry context (education companies like McGraw Hill and Pearson、their profit history as textbook publishers),让 readers understand 这不是 simple product change,而是 profit-seeking ethos 的 continuation。这些 contextual layers 为 subsequent detailed reporting 奠定了 foundation,让 individual stories 和 data 能够 be understood within larger structural problems。

As With In recent years Amid Against the backdrop of In the context of Following In response to Due to

首先 identify the broader trend or shift (如 digital transformation),然后 narrow down to specific issue it creates (如 new financial burden),最后 introduce key stakeholders (students、companies、universities)。模版:「As [broader trend occurs], [specific group] are [experiencing specific problem] that [connects to larger pattern]. [Key detail about main actors/systems involved.]」。关键是 avoid excessive detail in opening——只需 enough context 让 readers grasp why this matters,然后 let subsequent paragraphs provide depth。

    P8 P9 P10

第9段 和 第10段 展现了 balanced reporting 的 technique——presenting industry's defense and alternative perspectives。文章 objectively present textbook industry spokesperson's claims (digital products aren't just homework mechanisms、offer various features) 和 Professor Hunt's nuanced view (understands utility but chooses not to require codes)。 通过 present opposing views fairly 然后 let evidence speak for itself,文章的 critical stance 显得 more justified and authoritative。

信号词 insists argues maintains claims asserts contends states according to spokesperson said

仿写: 实现 balanced reporting 要 strategically incorporate dissenting voices。首先 clearly attribute claims to sources (spokesperson said、industry insists),用 neutral reporting verbs (told、stated 而非 claimed、insisted)。然后 present their arguments fully 但不 editorialize。模版:「[Source/organization] [neutral verb] that [their position]. [Specific details of their argument]. [Additional supporting points they provide.]」。关键是 juxtapose opposing views with contradicting evidence elsewhere in article,让 contrast emerge naturally rather than through direct refutation。这样 readers 能 see inconsistencies themselves, making critique more persuasive。

    P5 P6

第5段 和 第6段 中 Harper 的 internal struggle 通过 implicit question structure 展现——"pay rent or pay to turn in her chemistry homework?" 和 "Can I really afford these access codes now?" 这些 questions 不需要 explicit answers,因为 subsequent narrative (choosing to delay payment、starting with failing grade) 已经 reveal the answer。这种 question-driven narrative 让 readers experience her dilemma firsthand, creating suspense and emotional engagement。Question format 将 abstract policy issue 转化为 immediate personal choice, making readers confront 同样的 impossible choice,从而 deepen their understanding of the burden's severity。

信号词 ? whether how what which Can Should Would

仿写: 使用 question structure 来 dramatize dilemmas and highlight contradictions。选择 either-or questions 来 show impossible choices (pay rent or pay for education),或者 open questions 来 reveal uncertainty (Can I afford this?)。模版:「[Present character/situation] + [Pose the dilemma as question] + [Show their response/choice] + [Reveal consequences]」。关键是让 question feel natural and urgent rather than rhetorical device——它应该 emerge from character's actual decision-making process。Questions 最 effective when paired with concrete details showing real stakes (具体金额、specific deadlines)。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
    replacing—and sometimes joining—expensive textbooks

补充性对比 replacing—and sometimes joining replacing joining rather than not only ... but also instead of in addition to

    P2
have boasted that their new online offerings ... represent the future of the industry

    P2
when pushed to students through universities they partner with

被动式权力表达 pushed to students be pushed to be required to be forced to be imposed on be assigned be made to

    P3
But critics say the digital access codes represent the same profit-seeking ethos

转折 But but however yet nevertheless still instead

    P3
While they could once buy second-hand textbooks, or share copies with friends, the digital systems are essentially impossible to avoid

While ... once ... impossible to avoid while once formerly in the past now no longer

    P4
Rather than $250 ... you're paying $120. But because it's all digital it eliminates the used book market

Rather than ... But because rather than but because although though even if despite

    P5
pay rent or pay to turn in her chemistry homework

两难对立 pay rent or pay to turn in her chemistry homework A or B either ... or choose between at the expense of trade-off dilemma

    P6
She knew that her chemistry grade may take a dive as a result

情态与委婉表达 may take a dive may might could likely possibly tend to

    P7
The access codes may be another financial headache for students, but for textbook businesses, they're the future

利益主体对照 but for textbook businesses but for while for for students for companies at the expense of whereas

    P8
A Pearson spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that "digital materials are less expensive and a good investment"

A Pearson spokesperson spokesperson CEO representative industry group company said according to

    P8
"in higher education, the era of the printed textbook is now over"

绝对化预言 the era of the printed textbook is now over is now over inevitable the future is no longer there is no alternative has ended

    P9
The textbook industry insists the online systems represent a better deal for students

    P10
The online systems may make my life a lot easier but I feel like I'm giving up control

But ... giving up control but although even though despite while may ... but

    P11
You can't sell any of it back

You can't sell any of it back can't cannot no without never impossible

    P12
Often it's only 10% of your grade in class ... but if you didn't have it, it would affect your grade enough

反差与条件推论 only 10% ... but if you didn't have it only just merely but if unless otherwise

    P13
But her access codes for homework, which can't be rented or bought second-hand, were her most expensive purchases

But ... can't be rented or bought second-hand but however yet whereas unlike can't be rented

    P14
If you miss it, you just miss it. I just got zeros on a couple of first assignments

If you miss it, you just miss it if you miss it just no policy no exception automatically zero

News reports 的 opening 直接 state what happened,用 declarative statements 陈述 facts。Argumentative essays 则会 pose a question 或 present a thesis to argue。Expository essays 会 introduce a concept to explain。这篇文章的 first sentence 就说 'Digital learning systems now charge students',这是 reporting a fact,不是 arguing a position 或 explaining a concept。

  2. Argumentative 和 expository essays 通常用 hypothetical examples 或 generalized scenarios。News reports 必须 cite actual people and verifiable details 来 establish credibility。这篇文章给出 Harper's dilemma about rent vs homework,这种 personal narrative with specific dollar amounts ($450 for textbooks, $150-$200 paycheck) 是 journalistic reporting,不是 academic writing。

Argumentative essays 会 predominantly support one side,即使 acknowledge opposing views 也是为了 refute them。Expository essays 主要 explain mechanisms,不需要 opposing viewpoints。News reports 必须 give voice to different parties:这里有 students complaining, companies defending, advocates criticizing, professors having mixed views。这种 multiperspectival structure 表明 the goal is to inform,不是 to persuade。

Argumentative essays 可能 use statistics 但主要是 to support a thesis。Expository essays 用 data to explain,但不会 focus on market dynamics and financial impacts like news does。这篇文章的 data serves to show the magnitude of the trend (digital overtaking print) 和 the financial burden on students,这是 reporting on a phenomenon,不是 building an argument or teaching a concept。

  5. News 的 ending 通常 leave readers to form their own opinions,只是 provide more evidence。 Harper 'still remembers the sting',文章 end with her experience,没有 editorial conclusion saying 'this must change' 或 'this is how the system works overall'。这种 open-ended structure keeping readers informed but not directed 就是 news 的本质。对比之下,argumentative 会 conclude with a strong position, expository 会 summarize the complete picture of how things function。
