Food As Medicine: It's Not Just A Fringe Idea Anymore

Several times a month, you can find a doctor in the aisles of Ralph's market in Huntington Beach, California, wearing a white coat and helping people learn about food. On one recent day, this doctor was Daniel Nadeau, wandering the cereal aisle with Allison Scott, giving her some idea on how to feed kids who persistently avoid anything that is healthy. "Have you thought about trying fresh juices in the morning?" he asks her. "The frozen oranges and apples are a little cheaper, and fruits are really good for the brain. Juices are quick and easy to prepare, you can take the frozen fruit out the night before and have it ready the next morning."

Scott is delighted to get food advice from a physician who is program director of the nearby Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center, part of the St. Joseph Hoag Health alliance. The center's 'Shop with Your Doc' program sends doctors to the grocery store to meet with any patients who sign up for the service, plus any other shoppers who happen to be around with questions.

Nadeau notices the pre-made macaroni(通心粉) and cheese boxes in Scott's shopping cart and suggests she switch to whole grain macaroni and real cheese. "So I'd have to make it?" she asks, her enthusiasm fading at the thought of how long that might take, just to have her kids reject it. "I'm not sure they'd eat it. They just won't eat it."

Nadeau says sugar and processed foods are big contributors to the rising diabetes rates among children. "In America, over 50 percent of our food is processed food," Nadeau tells her. "And only 5 percent of our food is plant-based food. I think we should try to reverse that." Scott agrees to try more fruit juices for the kids and to make real macaroni and cheese. Score one point for the doctor, zero for diabetes.

Nadeau is part of a small revolution developing across California. The food-as-medicine movement has been around for decades, but it's making progress as physicians and medical institutions make food a formal part of treatment, rather than relying solely on medications(药物). By prescribing nutritional changes or launching programs such as "Shop with your Doc", they are trying to prevent, limit or even reverse disease by changing what patients eat. "There's no question people can take things a long way toward reversing diabetes, reversing high blood pressure, even preventing cancer by food choices," Nadeau says.

In the big picture, says Dr. Richard Afable, CEO and president of ST. Joseph Hoag Health, medical institutions across the state are starting to make a philosophical switch to becoming a health organization, not just a health care organization. That feeling echoes the beliefs of the Therapeutic Food Pantry program at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, which completed its pilot phase and is about to expand on an ongoing basis to five clinic sites throughout the city. The program will offer patients several bags of food prescribed for their condition, along with intensive training in how to cook it. "We really want to link food and medicine, and not just give away food," says Dr. Rita Nguyen, the hospital's medical director of Healthy Food Initiatives. "We want people to understand what they're eating, how to prepare it, the role food plays in their lives."

In Southern California, Loma Linda University School of Medicine is offering specialized training for its resident physicians in Lifestyle Medicine — that is a formal specialty in using food to treat disease. Research findings increasingly show the power of food to treat or reverse diseases, but that does not mean that diet alone is always the solution, or that every illness can benefit substantially from dietary changes. Nonetheless, physicians say that they look at the collective data and a clear picture emerges: that the salt, sugar, fat and processed foods in the American diet contribute to the nation's high rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. According to the World Health Organization, 80 percent of deaths from heart disease and stroke are caused by high blood pressure, tobacco use, elevated cholesterol and low consumption of fruits and vegetables.

"It's a different paradigm(范式) of how to treat disease," says Dr. Brenda Rea, who helps run the family and preventive medicine residency program at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. The lifestyle medicine specialty is designed to train doctors in how to prevent and treat disease, in part, by changing patients' nutritional habits. The medical center and school at Loma Linda also has a food cupboard and kitchen for patients. This way, patients not only learn about which foods to buy, but also how to prepare them at home.

Many people don't know how to cook, Rea says, and they only know how to heat things up. That means depending on packaged food with high salt and sugar content. So teaching people about which foods are healthy and how to prepare them, she says, can actually transform a patient's life. And beyond that, it might transform the health and lives of that patient's family. "What people eat can be medicine or poison," Rea says. "As a physician, nutrition is one of the most powerful things you can change to reverse the effects of long-term disease."

Studies have explored evidence that dietary changes can slow inflammation(炎症), for example, or make the body inhospitable to cancer cells. In general, many lifestyle medicine physicians recommend a plant-based diet — particularly for people with diabetes or other inflammatory conditions.

"As what happened with tobacco, this will require a cultural shift, but that can happen," says Nguyen. "In the same way physicians used to smoke, and then stopped smoking and were able to talk to patients about it, I think physicians can have a bigger voice in it."

Dr. Nguyen 指出这需要 cultural shift,并通过 physicians' own behavior change with smoking 来说明这种转变的 feasibility。强调医生可以 have bigger voice 在推动 dietary changes,将 professional influence 定位为 change catalyst。

在具体语境中,persistently 修饰 avoid 这个动作,强调孩子们对健康食物的 rejection(拒绝)不是一时的,而是 repeatedly(重复地)、consistently(一贯地)发生的。

在 food ratio(食物比例)语境中,reverse 意味着改变 current trend(当前趋势),让比例朝 opposite direction(相反方向)移动。

    词根 philo-sophia(爱智慧)告诉我们这个词涉及 fundamental principles(基本原则)。

比如本文用 'wandering the cereal aisle' 和 'giving her some idea',而非简单说 'the doctor helped patients'。 In [specific location], you can find [subject] [action verb + specific behavior], [present participle phrase describing ongoing action]. On one [time marker], this [subject] was [name], [verb-ing phrase] with [another person], [verb-ing phrase that shows the core activity].

    P1 P3 P4 P5 P6 P7 P8 P9 P11

文章 strategically 策略性地 embed 嵌入了多处 direct quotes 直接引语,包括 Dr. Nadeau 对患者说的 'Have you thought about trying fresh juices',Scott 的 hesitation 犹豫 'I'm not sure they'd eat it',以及医生们的 professional insights 专业见解如 'What people eat can be medicine or poison'。

[Attribution phrase], '[Conversational/instructive quote with specific action or recommendation],' [subject] [verb]. 或:'[Declarative statement with strong stance],' [name and title] says.

    P4 P7

文章 deploy 部署了 multiple statistical references 多处统计数据,如 'over 50 percent of our food is processed'、'only 5 percent is plant-based'、'80 percent of deaths from heart disease'。 Data from authoritative source 权威来源(WHO)进一步 legitimize 使合法化整个 food-as-medicine argument 食物即药物论证。

信号词 percent 80 percent 50 percent 5 percent according to

本文用 'over 50 percent' 后紧跟 interpretation 解读('I think we should try to reverse that')。 [Statistic from credible source], [expert name] [notes/points out/explains]. According to [organization], [percentage/number] of [subject] [consequence/condition].

    P2 P6 P7 P8

第二段 introduce 介绍了 'Shop with Your Doc' program 的 institutional context 机构背景,说明它是 Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center 的一部分,affiliated with 附属于 St. Joseph Hoag Health alliance。

信号词 part of program director of CEO and president of completed its pilot phase is offering

仿写: 背景交代要 strategic 策略性,提供 just enough detail 足够细节来 establish context 建立语境 without overwhelming 而不压倒 main narrative。 建议 position 放置 background near the beginning 开头附近或 when introducing new element 引入新元素时。Include 包含 organizational affiliations、program phases、geographic scope。 [Subject] is [description/role] of the [institution name], part of [larger organization]. The [program/initiative] [current status or phase], [indicating scale or reach].

Most striking 最显著的是 50% processed food 与 5% plant-based food 的 stark juxtaposition 鲜明并置,Dr. Nadeau 明确说 'I think we should try to reverse that'。另一处 contrast 对比在第六段:'becoming a health organization, not just a health care organization',distinguishing 区分 proactive wellness 主动健康与 reactive treatment 被动治疗。第十一段的 tobacco analogy 烟草类比也 create 创造 temporal contrast 时间对比(physicians used to smoke vs. stopped smoking),suggesting 暗示 similar cultural transformation 类似文化转变 is possible。

信号词 not just but versus instead of rather than reverse shift from...to

仿写: 运用对比时要 establish 建立 clear poles 清晰两极并 explicitly state 明确陈述 the desired direction 期望方向。本文用 'should reverse' 和 'not just...but' 结构来 signal 标示转变。建议 use 使用 parallel structure 平行结构(50% processed vs. 5% plant-based)来 emphasize 强调 imbalance。可以 employ 运用 temporal contrasts(historical analogy 历史类比)来 suggest 暗示 feasibility 可行性。 [Current state with statistic], but only [contrasting statistic]. [Expert] [suggests/advocates] we should [reverse/shift/move from X to Y]. [New model], not just [old model].

Opening scene 开场场景 implicitly ask 隐含地问:what would it look like 会是什么样 if doctors actively intervene 医生主动干预 in food choices? Dr. Nadeau's statement 陈述 'There's no question people can take things a long way' directly address 直接解答这个 implied inquiry。

There's no question can whether how to what

建议 structure 构建文章时 think about 思考 what question 什么问题 each section answers。可以用 'There's no question' 这类 phrase 短语来 definitively answer 明确回答 implied queries。 [Present specific scenario raising implicit question] → [Provide context and examples] → 'There's no question [affirmative answer to implied question],' [expert] says.

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P3
"So I'd have to make it?" she asks, her enthusiasm fading at the thought of how long that might take, just to have her kids reject it. "I'm not sure they'd eat it. They just won't eat it."

情态描写类 her enthusiasm fading enthusiasm fading interest waning excitement dimming hope sinking energy draining motivation declining

Scott 的 enthusiasm fading 和 repeated concerns about rejection 实际 implies 即使有 physician guidance,改变 dietary habits 仍面临 significant practical barriers,包括 time constraints、cooking skills 缺乏以及 children's preferences,这个 implication 对 article's thesis 非常 crucial,因为它 establishes 了 food-as-medicine movement 需要 overcome 的 real-world challenges,为后文 intensive training programs 和 cooking education initiatives 的 necessity 提供了 justification,证明 merely prescribing healthy foods 是 insufficient 的

    P4
Scott agrees to try more fruit juices for the kids and to make real macaroni and cheese. Score one point for the doctor, zero for diabetes.

Score one point for win the battle fight against defeat the enemy gain ground lose the war victory over

这个 sports metaphor 的 implication 是将 disease prevention 框定为 competitive struggle,医生和 diabetes 是 opposing teams,每个 patient's dietary commitment 都是 measurable progress,这对 thesis 的 contribution 在于它 reframes medical intervention 从 passive medication 到 active engagement, patient becomes participant 而非 recipient,同时 zero for diabetes 这个 phrasing 也 conveys 乐观 tone, suggesting 通过 consistent efforts, disease 是可以被 shut out 的,这 reinforces 文章关于 food choices 具有 transformative power 的 central argument

    P6
medical institutions across the state are starting to make a philosophical switch to becoming a health organization, not just a health care organization.

对比类 philosophical switch paradigm shift fundamental transition shift from X to Y move away from transform from evolve from

这个 philosophical switch 的 implication 是 California 的 medical institutions 正在从 disease management model 转向 wellness promotion model,这不仅是 operational change 而是 fundamental reconceptualization of medicine's role,对 article's thesis 的 significance 在于它 elevates individual programs(Shop with Your Doc)到 systemic transformation 的 level, suggesting food-as-medicine 不是 fringe initiative 而是 mainstream medical philosophy 的 evolution,这 provides institutional legitimacy 给整个 movement,同时 not just 这个 qualifier 也 implies 传统 health care 虽非 obsolete 但已 insufficient,需要更 holistic approach

    P7
Research findings increasingly show the power of food to treat or reverse diseases, but that does not mean that diet alone is always the solution, or that every illness can benefit substantially from dietary changes.

转折让步类 but that does not mean however, this doesn't imply nonetheless that said yet this doesn't suggest still, it's important to note but we must recognize

这个 concessive structure 的 implication 是虽然 dietary interventions 具有 significant potential,但 physicians 和 article 都在 maintain realistic expectations,不是 claiming food as panacea,这对 thesis 的 contribution 非常 strategic,因为它 preempts potential criticism about overselling food-as-medicine,同时 establishes credibility through acknowledging limitations,这让 subsequent claims(80% of heart disease deaths 与 diet-related factors)更 convincing,因为 readers see 作者不是 cherry-picking evidence 而是 presenting balanced assessment,这 strengthens overall argument by demonstrating scientific rigor

    P9
Many people don't know how to cook, Rea says, and they only know how to heat things up.

模糊限制语类 only know how to merely able to just capable of simply do no more than nothing beyond limited to

这个 only know how to heat things up 的 implication 是 many Americans 缺乏 basic cooking literacy,这不是 choice 而是 skill gap,导致 dependence on processed foods,对 article's thesis 的 significance 在于它 reveals 一个 root cause behind dietary problems,单纯 provide nutritional information 是 insufficient 的如果 patients 缺乏 execution capabilities,这 justifies 文中提到的 intensive training programs、kitchen facilities 和 cooking education initiatives,证明 food-as-medicine movement 必须 address skill-building not just knowledge transfer,同时 heat things up 这个 reductive description 也 implies passivity, contrast with cooking 的 active creation, suggesting 需要 empower patients as active participants

    P9
"What people eat can be medicine or poison," Rea says.

对比类(极端二元对立) medicine or poison cure or harm life or death healing or hurting benefit or damage help or hinder 救命还是致命

这个 medicine or poison dichotomy 的 implication 是 dietary choices 具有 pharmaceutical-level consequences,不存在 neutral foods, every meal 都是 meaningful intervention,对 article's thesis 的 contribution 在于它 provides philosophical foundation for treating food as medicine,如果 food can be poison 那它 logically can be medicine,这 validates 整个 movement's premise,同时这个 extreme framing 也 empowers physicians to treat nutrition with same seriousness as prescriptions, justifying dedicated training programs and institutional resources, medicine or poison 这个 phrasing 还 creates sense of urgency, implying 改变 dietary habits 不是 optional lifestyle enhancement 而是 critical health intervention

    P11
"As what happened with tobacco, this will require a cultural shift, but that can happen," says Nguyen. "In the same way physicians used to smoke, and then stopped smoking and were able to talk to patients about it, I think physicians can have a bigger voice in it."

As what happened with Just like the case of Similar to how As we saw with Following the pattern of Mirroring the shift in Echoing the transformation of

这个 tobacco analogy 的 implications 是多重的:首先它 acknowledges 改变 dietary culture 将 require decades-long effort 如同 anti-smoking campaign,其次它 suggests physicians 自身需要 model desired behaviors(practice what they preach),第三它 provides optimistic precedent 证明 seemingly entrenched habits can change,对 article's thesis 的 contribution 在于它 tempers expectations while maintaining hope,通过 reference successful but gradual transformation,这个 analogy 预防了 unrealistic expectations about quick fixes,同时 physicians can have bigger voice 这个 assertion 也 empowers medical professionals as cultural change agents,不仅是 individual treatment providers,这 expands scope of food-as-medicine movement from clinical intervention to societal transformation

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

这里用 'progress' 而不是 'attempt' 或 'controversy',说明作者 view this movement favorably。

  2. 在 news reporting 中,如果 journalist 只 present one side 的 voices, especially when those voices are all positive,这就是 clear indicator 表明作者 aligns with that perspective。

用 'no question' 表示作者 treats this as established fact,不是 debatable issue。同样,'increasingly show' 暗示 mounting evidence,这种 progressive language 本身就带有 optimistic tone,因为它 implies positive momentum。

这种 from micro to macro, from present to future 的 narrative arc 是典型的 advocacy structure。 但这里 every section adds another layer of positive development, creating a sense of inevitable progress,这就 reveals supportive attitude。

  5. 在 determining overall attitude,要 synthesize all the signals:word choice、source selection、evidence presentation、structure。这篇文章在 every dimension 都显示 positive orientation,而且 lack of any counterbalancing elements 使得这个 supportive stance 更加 obvious。这不是 neutral reporting,而是 feature story with clear advocacy purpose。

  • progress P1

在 title 中用 'progress' 这个词 immediately frames the movement positively,因为 progress implies forward movement 和 positive change。这不是 neutral term like 'development' 或 'change',而是 inherently positive evaluation, showing 作者 views this trend favorably。

同类词 advancement breakthrough development improvement growth

  • revolution P5

'Revolution' 是个 very strong positive term,暗示 fundamental and positive change。作者用这个词来 describe the food-as-medicine movement 说明他认为这是 significant and beneficial shift,不只是 minor adjustment。

  • no question P5

'There's no question' 这种 categorical assertion 表示作者 treats the claim as uncontroversial fact,没有 room for debate。 这里的 certainty language reveals 作者 fully embraces this position。

同类词 undoubtedly clearly certainly obviously without doubt

  • philosophical switch P6

'Philosophical switch' 这个 phrase 暗示 deep, meaningful change in approach,而且 'switch' implies moving from worse to better。

同类词 fundamental shift paradigm change new approach rethinking reconceptualization

  • power P7

'The power of food to treat or reverse diseases' 这里的 'power' 是 strong positive term, emphasizing effectiveness and capability。这不是说 'possible role' 或 'potential benefit',而是 confident assertion of capability, showing 作者对这个 approach 的 faith。

同类词 potential capability effectiveness efficacy strength

  • transform P9

在 第9段 中说 teaching people about food 'can actually transform a patient's life',这个 'transform' indicates profound positive change。

  • medicine or poison P9

'What people eat can be medicine or poison' 这种 stark dichotomy creates dramatic contrast, emphasizing high stakes。用 'medicine' vs 'poison' 这种 extreme opposition 来 frame food choices 显示作者认为 this issue 非常 important and consequential。

同类词 life or death cure or cause solution or problem help or harm benefit or damage

  • most powerful P9

'Nutrition is one of the most powerful things you can change' 用 superlative form 'most powerful' 来 rank nutrition above other interventions。

同类词 most effective most important strongest greatest primary

  • cultural shift P11

在 final paragraph 用 'cultural shift' 并且说 'that can happen',especially comparing to tobacco,暗示 inevitable positive change。这种 forward-looking language 配合 successful precedent (tobacco control) creates optimistic closure, reinforcing supportive attitude。

同类词 societal change cultural transformation social evolution collective change movement

这篇文章的 opening 描述了 a doctor in the aisles of Ralph's market wearing a white coat,这是 concrete scene with specific time and place。议论文会直接 state an argument,说明文会直接 define a concept,而新闻报道会用 narrative details 来 draw readers in。

第1段 到 第4段 持续跟踪 Allison Scott 和 Dr. Nadeau 的 shopping interaction,包括她的 hesitation about making real mac and cheese,这是 typical news narrative structure。

这种 zoom-out structure 是 news feature 的标志,议论文会 maintain consistent abstraction level,说明文会 follow logical categories。

  4. 文章 quotes 和 mentions 了 Dr. Daniel Nadeau、Dr. Richard Afable、Dr. Rita Nguyen、Dr. Brenda Rea,以及 multiple programs (Shop with Your Doc, Therapeutic Food Pantry, Lifestyle Medicine specialty)。 议论文主要 present author's argument,说明文 focus on factual explanation without extensive sourcing。

  5. 这篇文章完美体现了 news feature 的 characteristics:从 grocery store scene 开始,通过 Scott's story 建立 emotional connection,然后 systematically present the food-as-medicine movement 通过 multiple institutions and experts,最后以 cultural shift prediction 结束。它既不是 arguing a position (议论文) 也不是 explaining a concept (说明文),而是 reporting on a developing trend through concrete examples。
