On The Lesson Plan: Make Stuff. Fail. Learn While You're At It

We've always been a hands-on, do-it-yourself kind of nation. Ben Franklin, one of America's founding fathers, didn't just invent the lightning rod. His creations include glasses, innovative stoves and more.

Franklin, who was largely self-taught, may have been a genius, but he wasn't really an exception when it comes to American making and creativity.

The personal computing revolution and philosophy of disruptive innovation of Silicon Valley grew, in part, out of the creations of the Homebrew Computer Club, which was founded in a garage in Menlo Park, California, in the mid-1970s. Members — including guys named Jobs and Wozniak — started making and inventing things they couldn't buy.

So it's no surprise that the Maker Movement today is thriving in communities and some schools across America. Making is available to ordinary people who aren't tied to big companies, big defense labs or research universities. The maker philosophy echoes old ideas advocated by John Dewey, Montessori, and even ancient Greek philosophers, as we pointed out recently.

These maker spaces are often outside of classrooms, and are serving an important educational function. The Maker Movement is rediscovering learning by doing, which is Dewey's phrase from 100 years ago. We are rediscovering Dewey and Montessori and a lot of the practices that they pioneered that have been forgotten or at least put aside. A maker space is a place which can be in a school, but it doesn't look like a classroom. It can be in a library. It can be out in the community. It has tools and materials. It's a place where you get to make things based on your interest and on what you're learning to do.

Ideas about learning by doing have struggled to become mainstream educationally, despite being old concepts from Dewey and Montessori, Plato and Aristotle, and in the American Context, Ralph Emerson, on the value of experience and self-reliance. It's not necessarily an efficient way to learn. We learn, in a sense, by trial and error. Learning from experience is something that takes time and patience. It's very individualized. If your goal is to have standardized approaches to learning, where everybody learns the same thing at the same time in the same way, then learning by doing doesn't really fit that mold anymore. It's not the world of textbooks. It's not the world of testing.

Learning by doing may not be efficient, but it is effective. Project-based learning has grown in popularity with teachers and administrators. However, project-based learning is not making. Although there is a connection, there is also a distinction. The difference lies in whether the project is in a sense defined and developed by the student or whether it's assigned by a teacher. We'll all get the kids to build a small boat. We are all going to learn about X, Y, and Z. That tends to be one form of project-based learning.

I really believe the core idea of making is to have an idea within your head — or you just borrow it from someone—and begin to develop it, repeat it and improve it. Then, realize that idea somehow. That thing that you make is valuable to you and you can share it with others. I'm interested in how these things are expressions of that person, their ideas, and their interactions with the world.

In some ways, a lot of forms of making in school trivialize(使变得无足轻重) making. The thing that you make has no value to you. Once you are done demonstrating whatever concept was in the textbook, you throw away the pipe cleaners, the straws, the cardboard tubes.

Making should be student-directed and student-led, otherwise it's boring. It doesn't have the motivation of the student. I'm not saying that students should not learn concepts or not learn skills. They do. But to really harness their motivation is to build upon their interest. It's to let them be in control and to drive the car.

Teachers should aim to build a supportive, creative environment for students to do this work. A very social environment, where they are learning from each other. When they have a problem, it isn't the teacher necessarily coming in to solve it. They are responsible for working through that problem. It might be they have to talk to other students in the class to help get an answer.

The teacher's role is more of a coach or observer. Sometimes, to people, it sounds like this is a diminished role for teachers. I think it's a heightened role. You're creating this environment, like a maker space. You have 20 kids doing different things. You are watching them and really it's the human behaviors you're looking at. Are they engaged? Are they developing and repeating their project? Are they stumbling(受挫)? Do they need something that they don't have? Can you help them be aware of where they are?

My belief is that the goal of making is not to get every kid to be hands-on, but it enables us to be good learners. It's not the knowledge that is valuable; it's the practice of learning new things and understanding how things work. These are processes that you are developing so that you are able, over time, to tackle more interesting problems, more challenging problems—problems that require many people instead of one person, and many skills instead of one.

If teachers keep it form-free and student-led, it can still be tied to a curriculum and an educational plan. I think a maker space is more like a library in that there are multiple subjects and multiple things that you can learn. What seems to be missing in school is how these subjects integrate, how they fit together in any meaningful way. Rather than saying, "This is science, over here is history," I see schools taking this idea of projects and looking at: How do they support children in higher level learning?

I feel like this is a shift away from a subject matter-based curriculum to a more experiential curriculum or learning. It's still in its early stages, but I think it's shifting around not what kids learn but how they learn.

议论文作者常用 contrast 和 distinction 来 refine 其 position,通过说明 'what it is NOT' 来 emphasize 'what it IS'。

  4. 议论文作者会 repeatedly emphasize 其 core arguments through restatement 和 elaboration。Phrases like 'I believe', 'should', 'the goal is' 等 directly reveal 作者的 position 和 recommendations。

Words like 'shift', 'moving toward', 'ultimate goal' signal 作者想要 achieve 的 transformation。

综合起来,harness motivation 就是'有效驾驭和利用学生的内在动力',make it work for educational purposes,而不是 let it go to waste。

三条线索形成 perfect convergence:morphology 给出 literal meaning 'make trivial';immediate context 通过 appositive explanation 说明是 make something have no value;跨段落的 contrast 进一步 confirm 这是 opposite of creating meaningful, valuable things。

把线索 combine 起来:discourse logic 通过 'so it's no surprise' 建立了 success-to-success 的 parallel;semantic clues 从 'available to ordinary people' 和 widespread presence 推断出 positive development;word form 和 geographic expansion 进一步 reinforce 这种 growing, prospering 的 sense。

三层 evidence 互相 reinforce:word formation 给出 literal image of physical involvement;immediate context 通过 apposition with 'do-it-yourself' provide synonym;thematic analysis 显示这是文章 core concept,和 'learning by doing'、'making' 等 key ideas 密切相关。

这种 exemplification 为后文的 Maker Movement 提供了 historical foundation,证明 learning by doing 是 deeply rooted in American culture 的理念。

信号词 for example for instance such as like take... as an example consider look at

Steve Jobs, for instance, risked everything when he returned to Apple...'

特别是 Dewey 的 'learning by doing' 这个 phrase 被反复 cited, showing that 这些 educational practices 不是 new invention,而是 time-tested wisdom。

信号词 according to as... argued as... pointed out ... advocated ... said ... claimed echoes ... phrase quotes

仿写: 当你需要 bolster your argument 时,identify relevant authorities in your field。与其只说 your own opinion,不如说 'As renowned educator John Dewey argued, "education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." This insight supports...' 记住 vary your citation style,有时 direct quote,有时 paraphrase。

    P6 P7

文章在 第7段 中 explicitly contrast 'project-based learning' 和 'making',通过 highlight the distinction 来 clarify what true making is。前者是 teacher-assigned and standardized,后者是 student-directed and individualized。在 第6段 中,也 contrast traditional standardized education(everybody learns the same thing at the same time)和 learning by doing(individualized, takes time)。

信号词 however but in contrast on the other hand unlike whereas while although the difference lies in rather than

    仿写: 当你想 emphasize certain qualities 时,set up a comparison with something familiar。Structure 可以是:'Unlike X, which does A, B, C, Y does D, E, F.' 或者 'While X focuses on..., Y emphasizes...'

Silicon Valley's innovation culture grew out of Homebrew Computer Club 的 garage creations。第9段 和 第10段 argue that 当 making is not student-directed,it becomes boring and loses motivation, establishing causation between autonomy and engagement。这些 causal chains help readers understand why Maker Movement works 以及 what conditions are necessary for success。

信号词 because since as due to leads to results in causes grew out of stems from consequently therefore thus so

仿写: 当你想 explain why something happens 或 what results from an action 时,clearly establish the causal link。可以说 'Because of X, Y occurs' 或 'X leads to Y, which in turn causes Z'。 记住 vary your causal language,不要总用 'because'。

就像 library 有 multiple subjects and things you can learn, maker space 也是 multi-subject 的 integrated learning environment。这个 comparison 帮助 readers understand an unfamiliar concept(maker space)通过 relating it to something familiar(library),making the abstract idea more accessible and comprehensible。

信号词 is like similar to just as analogous to comparable to resembles is more like can be compared to in the same way

仿写: 当你需要 explain something unfamiliar 时,find a relatable comparison。Structure: 'X is like Y in that both...' 或 'Just as Y does A, X does B'。模版:[引出新概念X] + [使用 'is like', 'similar to', 'just as'] + [引出熟悉概念Y] + [说明两者的共同点] + [可选:指出这个相似性的意义]。

    P12

在 第12段 中,作者 uses rhetorical questions to engage readers:'Are they engaged? Are they developing and repeating their project? Are they stumbling? Do they need something that they don't have? Can you help them be aware of where they are?' 这串 questions 不期待 literal answers,而是 guide readers to think about teacher's observational role。这种 technique 让 abstract concept of 'teacher as coach' 变得 concrete and actionable,同时 involve readers in the thinking process。

仿写: 当你想 emphasize a point 或 make readers think critically 时,pose questions you don't need answered。可以是 single powerful question 或 series of questions building momentum。 注意 rhetorical questions 应该 have obvious or thought-provoking implications,不是真正需要 information。

    P12 P14

文章在 第14段 中使用 parallel structure:'What seems to be missing in school is how these subjects integrate, how they fit together in any meaningful way.' You're creating this environment... You have 20 kids doing different things. You are watching them...' 这些 parallel constructions 通过 rhythmic repetition 来 emphasize key points, making the writing more forceful and memorable。The repetitive structure creates momentum and highlights the interconnected nature of ideas。

仿写: 当你有 multiple related points to make 时,structure them in parallel form。可以是 repeated sentence beginnings('You are...', 'You have...', 'You do...'),或 repeated clauses with similar structure。 确保至少三个 parallel elements 来 create the effect, maintain consistent grammatical structure。

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P1
Ben Franklin... didn't just invent the lightning rod. His creations include glasses, innovative stoves and more.

递进关系(Not only... but also 变体) didn't just not just not only more than far beyond beyond simply

这种 historical root(历史根基)为后文 support(支持)Maker Movement 提供了 legitimacy(合法性)和 identity(认同感)。

    P6
Ideas about learning by doing have struggled to become mainstream educationally, despite being old concepts...

(Difficulty indication) struggled to fail to hardly scarcely at odds with

    这句话隐含了对 traditional education(传统教育)的 irony(讽刺)。即便有 Plato 等伟人的 endorsement(背书),这种 effective(有效的)方法仍非 mainstream(主流),暗示了 current schools(当前学校)过于追求 standardization(标准化)而牺牲了真正的 learning(学习)。

    P9
In some ways, a lot of forms of making in school trivialize making. The thing that you make has no value to you.

(Negative evaluative language) trivialize superficial hollow meaningless merely a formality

    作者借此表达了对 current curriculum(现有课程)中“走过场”现象的 frustration(沮丧)。言外之意是:没有 student ownership(学生自主权)的 hands-on activity(动手活动)只是 waste of materials(浪费材料),无法产生真正的 educational value(教育价值)。

    P12
Sometimes, to people, it sounds like this is a diminished role for teachers. I think it's a heightened role.

(Contrast and Paradox) diminished... heightened sounds like... but actually less... more seemingly... truly

    作者在回应 teachers(教师)对于 lose control(失去掌控)的 anxiety(焦虑)。言外之意是:从 lecturer(讲授者)转变为 coach(教练)并不是降级,而是对 observation(观察)和 human behavior understanding(理解人类行为)提出了更 advanced(高级)的挑战。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

结论先行:本文作者态度为积极支持( Enthusiastically Supportive of Maker Movement and Experiential Learning)。

当作者 say something is "important",他在 making a claim about its worth,这 directly reveals supportive stance。

Supportive authors 会 use "although...but" structure: 先 acknowledge minor issues,然后 emphasize greater advantages。这里 "not efficient" is presented as acceptable trade-off for being "effective",显示作者 prioritize effectiveness over efficiency,即 fundamentally support the practice。

作者 deliberately select what to compare with 来 guide reader judgment。Comparing to "library" evokes positive feelings (知识、自由、多样性),while "textbooks and testing" often carry negative connotations (rigid、boring、standardized) 在 progressive education discourse 中。这些 strategic comparisons reveal 作者 prefer maker approach。

如果 ending paragraphs use forward-looking language ("shift"、"future"、"enable") without hedging ("might"、"could"、"potentially"),作者在 make confident predictions,这是 strong support indicator。Supportive authors 会 end with vision of positive change,而 critical authors 会 end with warnings or calls for caution。

  • thriving P4

"Thriving" 是 strong positive descriptor,表示 Maker Movement 不仅 exists 而且 developing vigorously。在议论文中,当作者 describe a phenomenon as "thriving",他在 celebrate its success,不是 neutrally reporting。这个词 carries connotations of health and vitality,暗示作者认为这是 desirable state。

同类词 flourishing prospering booming growing vibrant

  • important educational function P5

同类词 important function crucial role significant contribution vital purpose essential value

  • rediscovering P5

"Rediscovering" 暗示 something valuable was lost and now being found again。这个词 carries positive connotation because it implies original value。作者在 suggest that maker education 是 return to better practices,不是 risky innovation。这个 framing strategy makes the concept less threatening and more appealing,显示 supportive attitude。

同类词 recovering reviving returning to reclaiming resurrecting

  • effective P7

"Effective" 出现在 concession-rebuttal structure 的 rebuttal 部分 ("may not be efficient, but it is effective")。 作者 prioritize effectiveness over efficiency,表明他认为 outcomes matter more than process speed,这 support maker approach。

同类词 successful powerful impactful productive fruitful

  • I really believe P8

这是 first-person commitment language,表明作者 personally invested in this position。"Really" 加强了 conviction level。在议论文中,当作者 shift from third-person analysis to first-person declaration,他在 make his stance explicit and personal。这比 objective reporting 更 clearly reveal supportive attitude。

I believe I'm convinced I think In my view I'm certain

  • valuable P8

"Valuable" 是 direct value judgment,表明作者认为 maker creations have worth。这个词 appears in author's description of ideal making ("The thing that you make is valuable to you"),所以它 represents what author thinks should happen。在议论文中,describing desired outcomes with positive adjectives 显示 author's preferences and support。

同类词 worthwhile precious meaningful significant important

  • trivialize P9

这是 negative evaluation,但注意它 target "forms of making in school",不是 maker movement itself。作者 criticize inauthentic implementations 来 defend authentic maker philosophy。这种 internal distinction (good making vs. bad making) 表明作者 deeply care about the concept and want to protect its integrity,这是 supportive attitude 的 sign。

同类词 diminish undermine devalue cheapen reduce

  • heightened role P12

作者 anticipate potential criticism (teacher role seems "diminished") 并 reframe it as actually "heightened"。这个 strategic reframing 表明作者 defending maker approach against possible objections。选择 "heightened" 而不是 "different" 或 "changed" 是 deliberate move 来 present the role positively,显示 supportive stance。

同类词 elevated position enhanced function more important role greater significance expanded responsibility

  • enables P13

"Enables" 是 empowerment verb,表明 making 给学生 agency and capability。这类动词 carry positive connotations of liberation and potential。作者用它来 describe making's effect ("enables us to be good learners"),将其 frame as tool for positive transformation,这 clearly support the practice。

同类词 empowers allows facilitates makes possible helps

  • shift P15

"Shift" 在 conclusion 中 describe maker education as directional change,而且作者 embrace this change without hedging or warnings。在议论文 ending,用 change-oriented language without qualifiers 表明作者 welcome the development。注意他说 "it's shifting",用 present continuous 来 suggest ongoing positive movement,不是 uncertain future。

本文 title「MAKE STUFF, FAIL, AND LEARN WHILE YOU'RE AT IT」带有明显的 imperative tone 和 advocacy 意味,不是中性的 informative title。Opening paragraphs 通过 historical examples(Ben Franklin, Silicon Valley)建立 argument foundation,这是 persuasive writing 的典型 strategy,而说明文会直接 explain concepts,新闻报道会 lead with facts and events。

文中频繁出现 evaluative terms:「thriving」(第4段)、「important educational function」(第5段)、「valuable to you」(第8段)、「boring」(第10段)。这些词汇传达作者的 positive attitude toward the Maker Movement,而不是 neutrally presenting information。说明文会说「The Maker Movement has X characteristics」,新闻会说「The Maker Movement is growing in Y locations」。

第6段 明确指出「Ideas about learning by doing have struggled to become mainstream educationally」,然后 critique standardized approaches:「It's not the world of textbooks. It's not the world of testing.」这是在 challenge the status quo。第7段 进一步 distinguish project-based learning from making,显示作者在 refine arguments。

第10段「Making should be student-directed」、第11段「Teachers should aim to build」、第1段 title「MAKE STUFF, FAIL, AND LEARN」都使用 prescriptive language。作者不是在 describe what makers do,而是在 advocate what educators should do。

「My belief is that the goal of making is not to get every kid to be hands-on, but it enables us to be good learners」明确 restate author's conviction。第15段「I feel like this is a shift... it's shifting around not what kids learn but how they learn」用 first-person perspective 强化 personal stance,这是 opinion piece 的标志,不是 objective exposition or news reporting。

  6. 本文完整展现了 argumentative structure:开头用 historical examples establish credibility(第1段-3),中间 critique traditional education and advocate for Maker Movement(第4段-12),结尾 reinforce the philosophical shift author believes in(第13段-15)。整篇文章的 rhetorical purpose 不是 inform readers about what the Maker Movement is(说明文目标),也不是 report on Maker Movement events(新闻目标),而是 convince readers that learning by doing should be valued and implemented(议论文目标)。
