Why Are Asian Americans Missing from Our Textbooks?

I still remember my fourth-grade social studies project. Our class was studying the Gold Rush, something all California fourth-graders learned. I was excited because I had asked to research Chinese immigrants during that era. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I had always known that "San Francisco" translated to "Gold Mountain" in Chinese. The name had stuck ever since Chinese immigrants arrived on the shores of Northern California in the 1850s, eager to try their luck in the gold mines. Now I'd have the chance to learn about them.

My excitement was short-lived. I remember heading to the library with my class and asking for help. I remember the librarian's hesitation. She finally led me past row after row of books, to a corner of the library where she pulled an oversized book off the shelf. She checked the index and turned over to a page about early Chinese immigrants in California. That was all there was in my entire school library in San Francisco, home of the nation's first Chinatown. That was it.

I finally had the opportunity to learn about Asian Americans like myself, and how we became part of the fabric of the United States when I took an introductory class on Asian-American history in college. The class was a revelation. I realized how much had been missing in my textbooks as I grew up. My identity had been shaped by years of never reading, seeing, hearing, or learning about people who had a similar background as me. Why, I wondered, weren't the stories, histories, and contributions of Asian Americans taught in K-12 schools, especially in the elementary schools? Why are they still not taught?

Our students—Asian, Latino, African American, Native American, and, yes, white—stand to gain from a multicultural curriculum. Students of color are more engaged and earn better grades when they see themselves in their studies. Research has also found that white students benefit by being challenged and exposed to new perspectives.

For decades, activists have called for schools to offer anti-racism or multicultural curricula. Yet a traditional American K-12 curriculum continues to be taught from a Eurocentric point of view. Being multicultural often falls back on weaving children of color into photographs, or creating a few supporting characters that happen to be ethnic—an improvement, but superficial nonetheless. Elementary school classrooms celebrate cultural holidays—Lunar New Year! Red envelopes! Lion dancers!—but they're quick to gloss over(掩饰) the challenges and injustices that Asian Americans have faced. Most students don't, for example, learn about the laws that for years excluded Asians from immigrating to the U.S. They don't hear the narratives of how and why Southeast Asian refugees(难民) had to rebuild their lives here.

Research into what students learn in school has found just how much is missing in their studies. In an analysis, Christine Sleeter, a professor in the College of Professional Studies at California State University, Monterey Bay, reviewed California's history and social studies framework, the curriculum determined by state educators that influences what is taught in K-12 classrooms. Of the nearly 100 Americans recommended to be studied, 77% were white, 18% were African American, 4% were Native American, and 1% were Latino. None were Asian American.

Worse, when Asian Americans do make an appearance in lesson books, it is often laced with problems. "There hasn't been much progress," says Nicholas Hartlep, an assistant professor at Metropolitan State University. His 2016 study of K-12 social studies textbooks and teacher manuals found that Asian Americans were poorly represented at best, and subjected to racist caricatures(拙劣的模仿) at worst. The wide diversity of Asian Americans was overlooked; there was very little mention of South Asians or Pacific Islanders, for example. And chances were, in the images, Asian Americans appeared in stereotypical(模式化的) roles, such as engineers.

Teachers with a multicultural background or training could perhaps overcome such curriculum challenges, but they're few and far between. In California, 65% of K-12 teachers are white, compared with a student population that is 75% students of color. Nationwide, the gap is even greater. It isn't a requirement that teachers share the same racial or ethnic background as their students, but the imbalance poses challenges, from the potential for unconscious bias to a lack of knowledge or comfort in discussing race and culture.

How race and ethnicity is taught is crucial, says Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales, an Asian-American studies professor at San Francisco State University. She added that it's not so much about the teacher's background, but about training. "You can have a great curriculum but if you don't have teachers dedicated(专注于) to teaching it well," she says, "it won't work as well as you want it to."

Some teachers are finding ways to expose students to Asian-American issues — if not during school hours, then outside of them. This summer, Wilson Wong will lead a class of rising fifth-graders at a day camp dedicated to Chinese culture and the Chinese-American community in Oakland, California. His students, for instance, will learn about how Chinese immigrants built the railroads in California, and even have a chance to "experience" it themselves: They will race each other to build a railroad model on the playground, with some students being forced to "work" longer and faster and at cheaper wages. Wong, a middle school teacher during the school year, hopes he's exposing the students to how Chinese Americans contributed to the U.S., something that he didn't get as a student growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area. "I planted the seeds early," he says. "That's what I'm hoping for."

And, despite setbacks, the tide may finally be turning. California legislators passed a bill last year that will bring ethnic studies to all its public high schools. Some school districts, including San Francisco and Los Angeles, already offer ethnic studies at their high schools. High schools in Portland, Chicago, and elsewhere have either implemented or will soon introduce ethnic studies classes. And, as more high schools begin teaching it, the door could crack open for middle schools, and, perhaps inevitably, elementary schools, to incorporate a truly more multicultural curriculum. Doing so will send an important message to the nation's youngest citizens: Whatever your race or ethnicity, you matter. Your history matters. Your story matters.

这段 establishes 第一个 supporting argument,指出 multicultural curriculum 能让 students of color 更 engaged 并获得 better grades,同时 white students 也能从 new perspectives 中 benefit,用 research evidence 证明 inclusive education 的 positive impact on all students

这两段 critique 当前的 Eurocentric curriculum,第5段 指出 multicultural efforts 往往 superficial,只是 tokenistic representation 而忽视 injustices and challenges;第6段 用 Sleeter's research 提供 quantitative evidence,显示 Asian Americans 在 recommended figures 中 completely absent,暴露了 systemic exclusion

它 demonstrates problem 的 severity and pervasiveness,为 call to action 提供了 stronger justification

这三段 extend the critique from curriculum content to implementation。第7段 揭示 textbooks 中 Asian Americans 的 misrepresentation and stereotyping;第8段 指出 teacher demographics 的 imbalance 及其带来的 challenges;第9段 强调 teacher training 的 crucial role,不仅是 background 而是 dedication to teaching well

它 anticipates potential solutions(better textbooks, diverse teachers)while acknowledging current obstacles,为后续的 hopeful examples 做 contrast

这两段 shift tone from critique to hope。第10段 通过 Wilson Wong 的 day camp example 展示 grassroots efforts, educators 在 finding ways to expose students to Asian American history;第11段 描述 policy-level progress,California 和其他 states 正在 implementing ethnic studies,最后以 powerful message 结尾:'you matter, your history matters, your story matters',将 argument 升华为 universal principle of recognition

这个 conclusion 提供 concrete examples of change,从 individual teacher initiative 到 statewide legislation,展示 momentum is building。最后通过 emotional appeal 将 specific issue 扩展为 universal value, leaving readers with clear call to action and compelling vision

MAIN IDEA ·

本文 title 用疑问句 'Why are Asian Americans missing from our textbooks?'

第3段 是关键 turning point,作者从 'I finally had the opportunity' 的个人叙述转向 'Why, I wondered, weren't the stories... taught?' 和 'Why are they still not taught?'

第4段 提出 'Students of color are more engaged' 和 'white students benefit',establishing multicultural curriculum 的 universal benefits。第5段-7 则通过 'yet', 'worse' 等 adversative markers 展现 current reality:curriculum 'continues to be taught from a Eurocentric point of view',Asian Americans 的 representation 是 '77% white... None were Asian American',甚至存在 'racist caricatures'。这种 should be vs. what is 的 juxtaposition 强化了 author's argument 的 urgency。

第8段-10 从 problem 转向 partial solutions(teachers' efforts, day camps),用 'some teachers are finding ways' 显示 grassroots attempts。第11段 用 'despite setbacks, the tide may finally be turning' 和 'California legislators passed a bill' 展现 systemic change 的可能性,最后以 'Doing so will send an important message' 和三个 'matters' 结尾,这是 author's aspirational vision,也是文章的 ultimate argument:mandatory multicultural education 是 necessary 且 achievable 的。

主旨不是单一 statement,而是这个三段论式 argumentative arc:exclusion exists → it's harmful → reform is needed。

MAIN IDEA ·

Asian Americans are systematically excluded from K-12 curricula despite their significant contributions to U.S. history. This Eurocentric educational approach harms all students by denying them diverse perspectives. The author advocates for mandatory multicultural education, particularly ethnic studies, to ensure every student's history and identity are recognized and valued.

其次,revelation 这个 word 出现在 describing the class experience,紧接着是 realized how much had been missing。这个 sequence 显示 revelation 是一个 moment of sudden understanding。再结合 reveal 这个 root,我们可以推断 revelation 指 an eye-opening discovery or sudden realization,是一个 dramatically changes one's understanding 的 moment。

让我们 connect the dots。首先,became part of the fabric 这个 phrase structure 表明 fabric 是 something you can be part of。其次,文章的 main theme 是 Asian Americans' integral role in American history,而 fabric 用来 describe this role。第三,如果我们 apply the literal meaning of fabric - woven material with many threads - 到 social context,就能理解这是一个 metaphor for the complex composition of society。所有这些 clues point to fabric meaning the essential structure or fundamental makeup of something。

现在 synthesize these insights。首先,grammatical structure weaving...into shows directional movement - putting something inside something else。其次,evaluative context 表明这是 a method of inclusion,虽然 superficial。 The word carries the meaning of combining or incorporating elements together,但 effectiveness depends on how it's done。

让我们 integrate these clues。首先,syntactic position - laced with problems modifies the representation,表示 a quality of that representation。其次,the examples that follow 说明 problems 是 pervasive,不是 isolated。第三,considering the textile metaphor thread running through the article, laced 保持了 weaving imagery,但 with negative connotation。综合这些,laced with 表示 thoroughly mixed or permeated with something,通常是 negative elements。

现在 pull together the analysis。首先,metaphorical framework - door as opportunity 已经 established。 第三,physical imagery of cracking open - a slight opening - matches the tentative, beginning nature of this expansion。所有 evidence 指向 crack 在这里表示 open slightly or begin to open,强调 initial, incomplete nature of the opening。

这个childhood memory不仅establish了author's credibility,更importantly,它让abstract的curriculum problem变得concrete and relatable,directly支撑了文章的central argument:Asian Americans在K-12 education中被systematically excluded。

I still remember for example for instance such as take... as an example consider one case in point to illustrate specifically

仿写: 当你want to argue一个systemic problem时,不妨start with a personal anecdote that readers can visualize。Focus on sensory details(比如作者提到的library corner, oversized book)来create vivid imagery。 I still remember [specific time/event] when [personal experience]. [Describe concrete details]. That was when I realized [connection to broader argument].'

    P4 P6 P7 P9

    作者引用Christine Sleeter教授的research analysis,用quantitative data(77% white, 18% African American, 4% Native American, 1% Latino, 0% Asian American)来provide authoritative evidence。

信号词 says according to research has found study found states argues claims points out notes observes writes reports

仿写: 当你make controversial claims时,及时introduce authoritative sources。注意三个要素:source的credentials(如professor title, institution),研究的specifics(study year, methodology),和具体findings(preferably用数字)。引用后immediately解释why this evidence matters to your argument。 According to [expert name + credentials], [specific finding/data]. This [verb: demonstrates/reveals/confirms] that [connection to your thesis].'

    P3 P4 P8

作者establish了clear causal chains:curriculum中Asian American representation的lack导致students of color的identity crisis('My identity had been shaped by years of never reading... people who had a similar background'),同时miss opportunities for engagement和better grades。Conversely, multicultural curriculum会bring specific benefits:students of color变得more engaged, white students gain new perspectives。这种cause-effect reasoning directly support了main argument:current Eurocentric curriculum不仅harm Asian Americans,也deprive所有students of educational benefits。

信号词 because since as a result therefore thus consequently leads to results in causes due to owing to so that for this reason

仿写: 构建因果链时,要explicitly state both the cause和the effect,然后explain the mechanism连接两者。避免oversimplification:acknowledge potential complexity或alternative explanations会make your reasoning更credible。Use transitional phrases来make causal relationship clear。 [Cause/condition] leads to/results in/causes [effect]. This happens because [mechanism explanation]. As a result/Consequently, [broader implication].'

    P4 P5 P6 P8

    作者strategically对比current reality和ideal situation:一边是Eurocentric curriculum中Asian Americans的complete absence(0% in California framework),另一边是multicultural curriculum能带来的benefits(engagement, better grades, new perspectives)。 类似地,作者对比teacher demographics(65% white teachers in California)和student population(75% students of color),visually demonstrate了representation gap,让argument更powerful and undeniable。

信号词 compared with while whereas in contrast on the other hand however but yet unlike conversely instead rather than

仿写: Effective contrast需要select两个truly comparable elements,然后systematically highlight their differences。可以use parallel structure来emphasize contrast(如作者的percentage comparisons)。 While [situation A shows X characteristic], [situation B demonstrates opposite Y]. This contrast reveals/highlights [implication for your argument]. Compared to [baseline], [current situation] shows [significant difference].'

    P10 P11

    作者用'crack open the door'这个metaphor来describe ethnic studies逐步进入lower grades的process,生动形象地convey了change的gradual nature和hopeful momentum。这个door imagery暗示了current barriers(closed door)和future possibilities(opening),perfectly capture了educational reform的progressive nature。另外'planted the seeds early'metaphor用gardening imagery来express教育的long-term impact,强调early exposure的importance,making abstract educational philosophy变得tangible and memorable。

信号词 like as is becomes represents symbolizes embodies serves as

一旦introduce一个metaphor,可以extend it来reinforce the comparison。 [Abstract concept] is like [concrete image]: [explain the parallel]. Just as [aspect of image], [corresponding aspect of concept].'

    P11

文章结尾处,作者使用powerful parallel structure:'Your race or ethnicity, you matter. Your history matters. Your story matters.' 这个triple repetition of 'matter(s)'加上similar sentence patterns创造了rhythmic emphasis, emotionally reinforce了文章的ultimate message—每个人的identity and history都equally important。这种repetition不仅make conclusion memorable,更importantly通过cumulative effect强化了inclusivity and validation的theme,给readers留下lasting emotional impact。

Whatever Whether... or Not only... but also Either... or Both... and First... second... third On one hand... on the other hand

仿写: 创建effective parallelism时,maintain consistent grammatical structure across repeated elements(same verb forms, sentence patterns)。通常three-part parallelism(tricolon)最powerful。Build from shorter to longer elements或from less to more important可以create crescendo effect。用于conclusion时especially impactful,因为it drives home your central message。 [Subject] [verb] [object]. [Subject] [verb] [object].' 或者 'Whatever [variable A], [claim]. Whatever [variable B], [same claim structure]. Whatever [variable C], [same claim structure].'

    P3

作者在第3段连续使用两个rhetorical questions:'Why, I wondered, weren't the stories... taught in K-12 schools?' and 'Why are they still not taught?' 这些questions不是seeking actual answers,而是emphasize the absurdity and injustice of current situation。通过pose these questions,作者invite readers去share her indignation and sense of urgency。第二个question的shift from past tense到present tense特别effective,突出了problem的ongoing nature,强化了argument的immediacy and relevance。

Why How What Who Can we really Is it not Isn't it Don't we Shouldn't we How can

仿写: Use rhetorical questions当answer seems obvious or when you want to emphasize absurdity of current situation。Position them strategically—often after presenting evidence或before launching into explanation。可以use multiple questions to build intensity。确保question's implied answer clearly supports your argument。但要sparing使用:too many rhetorical questions会lose impact。 Why [repeated or intensified version]?' 或者 'How can we [claim to X] when [contradictory reality]?'

IMPLIED MEANING ·

    P2
She finally led me past row after row of books, to a corner of the library where she pulled an oversized book off the shelf. She checked the index and turned over to a page about early Chinese immigrants in California. That was all there was in my entire school library in San Francisco, home of the nation's first Chinatown. That was it.

That was it That's all Nothing more Just that Only this And that was all Period

表面上作者只是 state 一个 fact,但 "That was it" 这种 emphatic repetition 传递的 implication 是:在 Chinese American 文化 historically significant 的 San Francisco,整个 school library 关于 Chinese immigrants 的 material 竟然只有 one page,这 reveals systemic neglect 和 educational exclusion。这个 言外之意 serves 文章主旨,因为它 provides concrete evidence of how Asian American history is marginalized in curriculum, from the very beginning of author's educational journey。

    P3
I finally had the opportunity to learn about Asian Americans like myself, and how we became part of the fabric of the United States when I took an introductory class on Asian-American history in college.

I finally had the opportunity finally at last eventually only then not until it wasn't until

"Finally" 这个词 implies 作者等了 too long 才 learn about her own heritage,言外之意是 K-12 education systematically excluded Asian American history, forcing students to wait until college for basic cultural knowledge。这 directly supports 文章主旨,showing how educational exclusion impacts identity development,因为作者明确说 "My identity had been shaped by years of never reading, seeing, hearing, or learning about people who had a similar background as me"。这个 personal narrative establishes the emotional foundation for her policy argument。

    P3
Why, I wondered, weren't the stories, histories, and contributions of Asian Americans taught in K-12 schools, especially in the elementary schools? Why are they still not taught?

Why, I wondered Why How come How is it that Why on earth What explains How can we explain

Asian Americans have made significant contributions Why are they still not taught" 更进一步 implies 这个 problem 持续了 decades without resolution, revealing institutional inertia。这 serves 主旨 by transitioning from personal narrative to systemic critique, establishing that this is not just author's individual experience but a widespread educational failure that demands policy change。

    P5
Being multicultural often falls back on weaving children of color into photographs, or creating a few supporting characters that happen to be ethnic—an improvement, but superficial nonetheless.

让步转折 an improvement, but superficial nonetheless but superficial nonetheless yet inadequate though insufficient but merely cosmetic however tokenistic albeit limited

这个 concession 的 implication 是:current multicultural efforts 只是 tokenistic gestures,并未 address real historical injustices 和 systemic exclusion。"Superficial" 暗示这些 efforts 可能让 educators feel good about themselves without doing the hard work of真正 integrating Asian American history。这 supports 主旨 by critiquing half-measures 和 calling for substantive curriculum reform rather than cosmetic diversity。

    P5
Elementary school classrooms celebrate cultural holidays—Lunar New Year! Red envelopes! Lion dancers!—but they're quick to gloss over the challenges and injustices that Asian Americans have faced.

Lunar New Year! Red envelopes! Lion dancers! ! cultural holidays! festivals! celebrations! traditions! colorful costumes!

这些 exclamation marks 的 implication 是:schools prefer celebrating exotic, entertaining aspects of Asian culture while avoiding the uncomfortable truths of discrimination 和 exclusion。这种 "celebration without education" approach 是 performative diversity that doesn't challenge students to confront historical injustices。这 serves 主旨 by exposing how even well-intentioned multicultural efforts can be reductive, reinforcing the need for comprehensive ethnic studies that include both culture and struggle。

    P6
Of the nearly 100 Americans recommended to be studied, 77% were white, 18% were African American, 4% were Native American, and 1% were Latino. None were Asian American.

None were Asian American None Not a single Zero Not one Absolutely none No representation

"None" 这个词 implies Asian Americans are not just underrepresented but completely erased from official curriculum guidelines。在 California 这个 Asian American population significant 的 state,这种 complete absence 是 particularly egregious。这 provides quantitative evidence for 文章主旨,showing that exclusion is not accidental oversight but systemic erasure embedded in official educational standards。

    P7
Worse, when Asian Americans do make an appearance in lesson books, it is often laced with problems.

Worse Even worse More troubling More concerning Worse still To make matters worse More alarming

"Worse" implies 一个 catch-22 situation:Asian Americans are either completely excluded or poorly represented through racist caricatures 和 stereotypes。这 suggests 即使有 representation, quality matters as much as quantity。这 deepens 主旨 by arguing that真正的 multicultural education requires not just adding Asian Americans to textbooks but portraying them accurately 和 comprehensively, avoiding both erasure and stereotype。

    P7
There hasn't been much progress, says Nicholas Hartlep, an assistant professor at Metropolitan State University.

There hasn't been much progress hasn't been much progress little improvement minimal change hardly any advancement scant development negligible progress

Hartlep 的这个 measured statement "hasn't been much progress" actually implies decades of advocacy have yielded almost no results,这比 direct accusation 更 powerful because it comes from research-based assessment。配合后面的 findings about racist caricatures,这 suggests situation may have actually worsened in some ways。这 supports 主旨 by showing systemic resistance to change 和 justifying urgent policy intervention like mandatory ethnic studies。

    P8
Teachers with a multicultural background or training could perhaps overcome such curriculum challenges, but they're few and far between.

假设后的否定转折 but they're few and far between but such teachers are rare yet these are scarce however these remain uncommon but few exist though rarely found yet in short supply

这个 conditional 的 implication 是:we can't rely on individual teachers to fix a systemic curriculum problem, especially when teacher diversity doesn't match student diversity。"Few and far between" emphasizes 这不是 scalable solution。这 supports 主旨 by arguing against placing burden on individual teachers 和 instead calling for institutional reform through mandatory curriculum changes that benefit all students regardless of teacher background。

    P9
You can have a great curriculum but if you don't have teachers dedicated to teaching it well, she says, it won't work as well as you want it to.

限定性强调 dedicated to teaching it well dedicated to committed to willing to trained to prepared to equipped to

Tintiangco-Cubales 的这个 warning implies many schools might adopt ethnic studies curriculum superficially without proper teacher training and commitment, resulting in ineffective implementation。"Dedicated to teaching it well" 强调需要 ongoing training 和 genuine commitment, not just adding course titles。这 serves 主旨 by anticipating counterarguments("we already tried that and it didn't work")和 emphasizing that successful multicultural education requires both curriculum reform and teacher preparation。

    P10
This summer, Wilson Wong will lead a class of rising fifth-graders at a day camp dedicated to Chinese culture and the Chinese-American community in Oakland, California.

未来时态的期待性 will lead will bring will introduce will implement will incorporate could crack open might eventually

Wong "will lead" 这个 summer camp 的 implication 是:dedicated teachers are forced to supplement inadequate curriculum through extracurricular efforts, showing both individual agency 和 systemic failure。"This summer" 和 "outside school hours" 暗示 official curriculum still doesn't cover this content。这 serves 主旨 by providing grassroots example of what's possible when teachers are committed, while simultaneously highlighting that such efforts should be integrated into regular curriculum rather than dependent on individual teacher initiative。

    P11
And, despite setbacks, the tide may finally be turning.

让步后的谨慎希望 despite setbacks, the tide may finally be turning despite setbacks despite challenges in spite of obstacles notwithstanding difficulties even with resistance may finally

"Despite setbacks" 和 "may finally be turning" 的 combination implies change is happening but remains fragile and incomplete,需要 continued advocacy。"Finally" 再次强调这是 long-overdue change。这 serves 文章 conclusion by acknowledging progress(California bill, multiple districts implementing ethnic studies)while avoiding triumphalism,因为 these are just beginning steps toward the comprehensive multicultural education the author advocates for throughout the essay。

    P11
And, as more high schools begin teaching it, the door could crack open for middle schools, and, perhaps inevitably, elementary schools, to incorporate a truly more multicultural curriculum.

隐喻性情态动词 could crack open might open the door could pave the way may create opening could break through might unlock could spark

"Could crack open" implies current high school reforms 不是 endpoint 而是 beginning of broader transformation that will eventually reach elementary schools where author's journey began。"Perhaps inevitably" suggests once process starts 会有 自己的 momentum,但 "could" 和 "perhaps" maintain realism about obstacles。这 provides hopeful conclusion to 文章主旨 by suggesting systemic change is possible through incremental policy victories, bringing the argument full circle from author's childhood experience in 第1段 to vision of future elementary students learning comprehensive Asian American history。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

但这里作者用'may finally be turning'和具体的 examples 例子(California legislation, school districts)来 show 展示 progress 进展,这 reveals 作者其实是 optimistic advocate 乐观的倡导者。

纯粹 negative criticism 消极批评会 focus on 聚焦于 what's wrong 错误之处,而 advocacy 倡导会 emphasize 强调 why change matters 为什么改变重要和 how to achieve it 如何实现它。

标题 'WHY ARE ASIAN AMERICANS MISSING FROM OUR TEXTBOOKS?' 首段的 personal narrative about the Gold Rush project 不是单纯的 storytelling,而是为后面的 argument 做 foundation。

第3段 的 'Why, I wondered, weren't the stories, histories, and contributions of Asian Americans taught in K-12 schools?' 和 第4段 的 'Our students...stand to gain from a multicultural curriculum' 明确表达了 author's position:Asian American history should be taught。说明文会 neutral 地 explain what multicultural education is,新闻报道会 report 不同 sides 的 views,而议论文的 author takes a side。

第4段 说 'Research has also found that white students benefit',第6段 提到 'Christine Sleeter, a professor...reviewed California's history',第7段 引用 'Nicholas Hartlep...His 2016 study'。这些不是为了 inform readers about research 本身,而是为了 prove author's argument that curriculum is biased。说明文会 present research results objectively,新闻会 report 研究 findings,但议论文 selectively uses evidence to persuade。

第5段 说 'Yet a traditional American K-12 curriculum continues to be taught from a Eurocentric point of view','Being multicultural...superficial nonetheless'。第7段 用 'Worse' 开头,说 'Asian Americans were poorly represented at best, and subjected to racist caricatures at worst'。 说明文会 explain why things are the way they are,新闻会 report 不同 perspectives,但议论文 explicitly criticizes。

第11段 说 'the tide may finally be turning',提到 California 和其他地方的 positive changes,最后用 'Doing so will send an important message' 和 'you matter. Your history matters. Your story matters' 作为 emotional appeal 和 call to action。这个 hopeful, prescriptive ending 是议论文的 signature,说明文会 summarize information,新闻会 end with latest development,但议论文 ends with vision 或 urging。

每个 section 都在 serve the argument that Asian American history must be taught。说明文会 organize by topics,新闻会 follow chronology 或 inverted pyramid,而议论文 follows persuasive logic。
