Part III Section C (2)
Directions: There  are 2 passages  in this section. Each passage  is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them  there  are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide  on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.
Passage Two
Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.
P1It's an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My partner says no because the boiler could go, or the roof fall off, and we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and what's the point if you can't go on holiday. The joy of a recession means no argument next year—we just won't go.

P2Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov poll of 2,000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. What's less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession—financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable. Recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples. Disputes were characterised by intense verbal(言语上的) aggression, tended to be repeated and not resolved, and made men, more than women, extremely angry.

P3Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolises, which may be different things to men and women. "People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it's for," he explains. "They'll say it's to save, to spend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them." He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that they've achieved something.

P4"The biggest problem is that couples assume each other knows what's going on with their finances, but they don't. There seems to be more of a taboo(禁忌) about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what you're doing, who's paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you don't have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it."

51.
What does the author say about vacationing?
A)People enjoy it all the more during a recession.
B)Few people can afford it without working hard.
C)It makes all the hard work worthwhile.
D)It is the chief cause of family disputes.

C(细节题)

题干 What does the author say about vacationing?

What does the author say about vacationing?

P1

I say you only live once and we work hard and what's the point if you can't go on holiday.

原文只说衰退期可能不去度假,并未说衰退期反而更享受度假;enjoy it all the more during a recession 是无中生有。

Few people can afford it without working hard

    • we work hard and what's the point if you can't go on holidayIt makes all the hard work worthwhile
    • we work hardall the hard work

It makes all the hard work worthwhile 与之完全对应——主语 it 指 vacationing,谓语 makes…worthwhile 即”使……

52.
What does the author mean by saying "money is known…to bring a relationship to its knees"(Line 1, Para. 2)?
A)Money is considered to be the root of all evils.
B)Some people sacrifice their dignity for money.
C)Few people can resist the temptation of money.
D)Disputes over money may ruin a relationship.

D(词义句意题)

题干 What does the author mean by saying "money is known…to bring a relationship to its knees" 正是要求对一句带习语意味的原句作释义。

What does the author mean by saying "…"? 中 by saying 是方式状语,引号内 money is known to bring a relationship to its knees 用了习语 bring sb./sth. to its knees(使……屈服/陷入困境),主语 money 配 be known to do(被普遍认为会…)。

P2

Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful.

Some people sacrifice their dignity for money

Few people can resist the temptation of money

    • money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its kneesDisputes over money may ruin a relationship
    • most likely tomay

Disputes over money may ruin a relationship,是隐喻直译型答案。

53.
The YouGov poll of 2,000 people indicates that in a recession ______.
A)conflicts between couples tend to rise
B)it is more expensive for couples to split up
C)couples show more concern for each other
D)divorce and separation rates increase

A(细节题)

题干 The YouGov poll of 2,000 people indicates that in a recession ______ 是对一项具体调查结论的客观转述。

The YouGov poll of 2,000 people 配谓语 indicates,宾语从句 that in a recession ______ 待补全。

P2

A YouGov poll of 2,000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money.

  • A)✓ 正确
    • arguing more with their partnersconflicts between couples tend to rise
    • 22% said they were arguing moretend to rise

financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable

原文说伴侣因钱争吵更多,与选项 couples show more concern for each other(更关心对方)极性正相反。

What's less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession 明言离婚/分居率是否上升尚不清楚;选项 divorce and separation rates increase 把”不清楚”直接断定为”上升”,与原文相反。

54.
What does Kim Stephenson believe?
A)Money is often a symbol of a person's status.
B)Money means a great deal to both men and women.
C)Men and women spend money on different things.
D)Men and women view money in different ways.

Kim Stephenson

D(细节题)

题干 What does Kim Stephenson believe?

P3

Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolises, which may be different things to men and women.

men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status Money is often a symbol of a person's status

Money means a great deal to both men and women 抹平了 Stephenson 想强调的差异性。

    • what it symbolises, which may be different things to men and womenMen and women view money in different ways

Men and women view money in different ways。

55.
The author suggests at the end of the passage that couples should ______.
A)put their money together instead of keeping it separately
B)make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgets
C)discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationship
D)avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic

C(细节题)

题干 The author suggests at the end of the passage that couples should ______ 限定在末段,问的是具体建议,不需跨段整合。

The author suggests…that couples should ______;插入语 at the end of the passage 仅作定位提示。

P4

In a healthy relationship, you don't have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.

末段 who's paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separately 显示作者认同”既有共同账户也有各自留存”的安排,而非要求把钱完全合并;put their money together instead of keeping it separately 与原文倾向相反。

原文 you don't have to agree about money 明言”不必达成一致”;make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgets 把”不必一致”翻转成”努力达成一致”。

  • C)✓ 正确
    • you have to talk about itdiscuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationship
    • In a healthy relationshipto maintain a healthy relationship

预判”必须就金钱进行沟通以维持健康关系”逐字对应 discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationship。

原文建议主动 talk about 金钱以维持健康关系;avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic 把”沟通”偷换为”回避争论”——回避正是作者反对的(more of a taboo about talking about money than about death 即是在批评回避)。
