According to a report from the Harvard School of Public Health, many everyday products, including some bug sprays and cleaning fluids, could lead to an increased risk of brain and behavioral disorders in children. The developing brain, the report says, is particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of certain chemicals these products may contain, and the damage they cause can be permanent.

The official policy, however, is still evolving. Health and environmental advocates have long urged US government agencies to tighten the use of some of the 11 chemicals the report cites and called for more studies on their long-term effects. In 2001, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency restricted the type and amount of lead that could be present in paint and soil in homes and child-care facilities, after concerns were raised about lead poisoning. The agency is now investigating the toxic effects of some of the chemicals in the latest report.

But the threshold for regulation is high. Because children's brain and behavioral disorders, like hyperactivity and lower grades, can also be linked to social and genetic factors, it's tough to pin them on exposure to specific chemicals with solid statistical evidence, which is what the EPA requires. Even the Harvard study did not prove a direct correlation but noted strong associations between exposure and risk of behavioral issues.

Nonetheless, it's smart to exercise caution. While it may be impossible to prevent kids from drinking tap water that may contain trace amounts of chemicals, keeping kids away from lawns recently sprayed with chemicals and freshly dry-cleaned clothes can't hurt.

  1. P1

    Chemical Risks to Children

A Harvard report warns that chemicals in common products may permanently harm children's brains and behavior.

  2. P2

    Evolving Government Response

US agencies are gradually responding to chemical risks through restrictions and ongoing investigations.

  3. P3

    The Challenge of Proving Causation

Strict regulation is difficult because studies show associations rather than definitive proof of chemical causation.

  4. P4

    Practical Precautions for Parents

Despite scientific uncertainty, parents can prudently reduce children's avoidable chemical exposure.

Harvard report developing brains

What does the Harvard report suggest about children's developing brains?

    • A They are protected from the effects of most household chemicals.
    • B They can fully recover once exposure to chemicals stops.
    • C They are especially susceptible to toxic chemicals, and the resulting harm may be lasting.
    • D They are harmed only by chemicals used in bug sprays.
    • E They are less affected by toxins than adult brains.
    • F They are affected only when chemicals are present in drinking water.

Environmental Protection Agency currently

What is the Environmental Protection Agency currently doing in response to the latest report?

    • A It has banned all eleven chemicals mentioned in the report.
    • B It is tightening restrictions on lead in all public buildings.
    • C It is funding long-term studies requested by health advocates.
    • D It is investigating the toxic effects of some chemicals identified in the report.
    • E It has concluded that the chemicals directly cause behavioral disorders.
    • F It is requiring households to stop using cleaning fluids immediately.

    该项准确保留当前进行时 is investigating,并对应 toxic effects、some chemicals 和 latest report 三个限制。identified in the report

Why is it difficult to regulate the chemicals discussed in the report?

    • A The report provides no evidence that children are exposed to chemicals.
    • B The EPA has no legal authority to regulate household products.
    • C Behavioral disorders are caused exclusively by inherited traits.
    • D Researchers have already proved a direct correlation between exposure and poor grades.
    • E Disorders may also stem from social and genetic factors, making chemical exposure hard to establish as the cause with solid evidence.
    • F Only a small number of children suffer from behavioral disorders.

stem from 改写 be linked to,hard to establish as the cause 改写 tough to pin them on,既保持谨慎程度,也准确解释 high threshold。障碍在于考生可能把 strong associations 误当作直接因果,忽略 even the Harvard study did not prove 的限定。

Which precaution does the article recommend for reducing children's avoidable chemical exposure?

    • A Prevent children from drinking tap water under all circumstances.
    • B Replace all household cleaning fluids with natural products.
    • C Wait until the EPA confirms a direct causal link before taking action.
    • D Allow children to play on sprayed lawns after drinking bottled water.
    • E Focus only on genetic and social causes of behavioral disorders.
    • F Keep children away from recently sprayed lawns and freshly dry-cleaned clothes.

障碍在于 tap water 同样含有 chemicals,但原文以 may contain trace amounts 和 impossible to prevent 标明它不是这里推荐的可控措施。

Nonetheless 引出 concessive turn,尽管存在 regulatory challenges,意群强调 exercise caution 的 smart choice,通过 concrete examples 如 keeping kids away from sprayed lawns 和 dry-cleaned clothes 提供 actionable advice,这是新闻的 practical implication 和 call for awareness

MAIN IDEA ·

新闻报道的 lead paragraph 通常遵循 inverted pyramid structure(倒金字塔结构),会在 opening 就直接揭示 what happened(发生了什么)和 who is affected(影响谁),这是 news writing 的 core convention(核心惯例)

News reports 尤其是 health-related news(健康相关新闻)常在 final paragraph 提供 actionable takeaways(可操作的要点),用 it's smart to、experts recommend 等 phrases 给出 practical guidance(实用指导),这是 complete the story arc(完成叙事弧线)的关键

    News articles 的主旨不是 single statement(单一陈述),而是 multi-layered message(多层次信息):initial finding(初步发现)+ contextual challenges(背景挑战)+ practical response(实践应对)。只读 opening 会 miss nuances(遗漏细节),只读 conclusion 会 lack foundation(缺乏基础)

主旨信号词 could lead to P1 however P2 threshold P3 exercise caution P4 did not prove a direct correlation P3

According to A report from says cited stated indicated found that revealed suggests noted

首先 identify authoritative sources relevant to your topic,然后在 opening paragraph 中引入它们的 findings 或 statements。 这样的结构能够 immediately signal 你的 article 是 evidence-based 而非 opinion-based。

    P2

第二段通过 'The official policy, however, is still evolving' 这一 transitional statement,为读者提供了 contextual background。作者 traces back to 2001 年的 EPA policy on lead,这种 historical context 的提供让 current situation 变得更加 comprehensible。

信号词 however In 2001 for example historically previously over the years long urged have been is now

仿写: 当你需要 contextualize current events 时,可以采用 time markers 来 structure your background。使用 'In [year]' 或 'For example' 来 introduce historical cases。 The official [policy/approach/situation], however, is still [状态]. [Advocacy group/Stakeholders] have long [行动]. In [year], for example, [具体案例], after [原因].'

通过 'But the threshold for regulation is high' 这一 statement,作者 highlights 了 practical challenge。

But However While Even can also be it's tough to did not prove but noted versus in contrast

仿写: 使用 contrastive structure 时,先 identify the gap 或 conflict 你想要 highlight。然后用 'But', 'However', 'While...can be' 这样的 structures 来 frame the contrast。模版:'But the threshold for [行动] is [形容词]. Because [原因A], it's tough to [行动] with [要求], which is what [主体] requires. Even [强有力的证据] did not prove [高标准], but noted [较低标准].'

    P1 P3

第一段中对 products 和 chemicals 的 factual description,如 'bug sprays and cleaning fluids', 'toxic effects', 'permanent damage',采用了 neutral, descriptive language。作者没有使用 sensational 或 emotional terms,而是 stick to scientific terminology。这种 objective tone 确保了 article 的 credibility,让 information delivery 显得 measured and professional,符合 quality journalism 的 standards。

信号词 could lead to is particularly may contain toxic effects damage vulnerable increased risk

模版:'[Product category], including [具体例子], could lead to [具体后果]. The [affected subject] is particularly vulnerable to [具体影响], and the [结果] can be [程度].' 保持 language clinical and specific, avoid words like 'dangerous', 'scary', 'alarming' 等 subjective descriptors。

    P4

虽然文章没有 explicit questions,但第四段的 'Nonetheless, it's smart to exercise caution' 采用了 implicit guidance 的方式,essentially answering the unasked question:'What should we do?' 这种 rhetorical move 从 presenting problems 转向 offering practical advice。通过 'While it may be impossible...can't hurt' 的结构,作者 acknowledges limitations 同时 provides actionable suggestions,这是 solution-oriented journalism 的典型 approach。

Nonetheless it's smart to While it may be can't hurt Therefore In the meantime What can be done The solution

仿写: 在 concluding sections,可以 address implicit questions 如 'What now?' 或 'What can be done?'。使用 'Nonetheless', 'Therefore', 'In the meantime' 来 signal transition to recommendations。 Nonetheless, it's smart to [建议]. While it may be impossible to [理想但不现实的做法], [具体可行的措施] can't hurt.' 这种结构 acknowledges reality while offering practical steps,非常 reader-friendly。

    P2 P4

文章在第二段提到了 '11 chemicals' 这个 specific number,在 '2001' 这个 precise year,以及 lead 在 'paint and soil' 中的 'type and amount' 的限制。

11 chemicals In 2001 type and amount trace amounts specific number of percentage level of

[Advocates/Organizations] have called for more studies on [subject] involving [具体数字] chemicals. In [year], for example, [机构] restricted the [type/amount/percentage] of [substance].' 将 abstract concepts 与 concrete numbers 结合,make your reporting more authoritative。

    P2
The official policy, however, is still evolving.

转折类 however but yet nevertheless nonetheless still though

这里的 however 制造了一个 sharp contrast:第一段说 Harvard report 已经 warn 了这些 chemicals 的 dangers,但第二段开头就用 however 指出 official policy is still evolving。

    P3
But the threshold for regulation is high.

But but however yet still unfortunately the problem is

通过指出 regulation 需要 solid statistical evidence 而 behavioral disorders 又 hard to pin on specific chemicals,文章 imply EPA 的 investigation 很可能 unable to produce meaningful regulations。更深层的 implication 是 criticizing 这种 evidential standard 本身——它 set the bar so high that 即使 Harvard study shows strong associations,仍然 insufficient for regulatory action。

    P3
Even the Harvard study did not prove a direct correlation but noted strong associations between exposure and risk of behavioral issues.

Even even even though even if while although though

这句话 surface 上是在 acknowledge Harvard study 的 methodological limitation(没有 prove direct correlation),但通过 but noted strong associations,作者实际在 argue 即使没有 direct proof, strong associations 也 sufficient to warrant concern。这个 implication 非常 strategic——它既 address 了 regulatory agencies 对 solid statistical evidence 的 requirement(承认目前 evidence 不够 strong for regulation),又 maintain 了 chemicals 确实 pose risks 的 position。对 main idea 的作用是 bridge EPA 的 high threshold 和文章最后的 precautionary recommendation:既然 scientific proof 难以获得,那么 exercising caution 就变得 more justified and necessary。

    P4
Nonetheless, it's smart to exercise caution.

Nonetheless nonetheless nevertheless even so still all the same be that as it may

前三段 establish 了一个看似 hopeless 的 situation:chemicals are dangerous → policy is lagging → regulatory threshold is too high → even Harvard can't prove causation。 这个 implication 是 empowering——虽然 systemic change 很难实现,但 individuals 可以通过 simple precautions(avoiding recently sprayed lawns, freshly dry-cleaned clothes)来 protect their children。对 main idea 的 contribution 是 provide closure and actionable takeaway:文章不是单纯 alarm readers about dangers,而是在 acknowledge regulatory limitations 的同时,offer realistic protective measures,体现了 responsible journalism 的 balanced approach。

    P4
While it may be impossible to prevent kids from drinking tap water that may contain trace amounts of chemicals, keeping kids away from lawns recently sprayed with chemicals and freshly dry-cleaned clothes can't hurt.

While while although though even though whereas whilst

这个 While structure 传递了 nuanced message about risk management。通过 contrast impossible prevention(tap water exposure)和 feasible precautions(avoiding sprayed lawns and dry-cleaned clothes),文章 imply 家长不应该 feel defeated by 无法 achieve 100% protection。The phrase 'can't hurt' 是特别 understated 的表达,它的 implication 比字面意思 stronger——不仅是 'harmless',更是 'probably beneficial and worth doing'。这种 moderate tone 对 main idea 很重要,因为它 prevent 文章 sound alarmist or impractical。最终 message 是 balanced and actionable:acknowledge regulatory failures and scientific limitations,但 empower readers with concrete, realistic steps they can take right now to reduce their children's exposure,体现了 solution-oriented journalism approach。

AUTHOR ATTITUDE ·

However' 引入政策滞后,'but' 引入监管难度,'nonetheless' 转回建议——这种反复 conceding and pivoting 的模式说明作者态度是 measured(有节制的),而非 alarmist 或 dismissive。

  • particularly vulnerable P1

同类词 especially susceptible highly sensitive at serious risk deeply affected

  • however P2

同类词 but yet nonetheless nevertheless while

  • it's tough to pin P3

'tough to pin' 是一个 colloquial evaluative phrase,作者用它来 acknowledge the epistemological difficulty of establishing causation。

同类词 difficult to establish hard to prove challenging to demonstrate impossible to confirm

  • it's smart to exercise caution P4

'it's smart to exercise caution' 是全文中最直接的 evaluative statement,作者用第一人称叙事视角(implicit 'you')发出 recommendation。'

同类词 it makes sense to be careful it's wise to avoid it's advisable to there's no harm in can't hurt to

  • can't hurt P4

'can't hurt' 是一个 litotes(反说法/低调陈述)——用 double negative 来表达 positive recommendation,语气比 'you should' 更 soft,但传递的 message 是 unambiguous endorsement。

同类词 no harm in worth trying it's better to there's little downside to it's only prudent

这个 opening 特征能帮助我们 distinguish news from argumentative essays(议论文通常会先 present a viewpoint 或 pose a question)和 expository essays(说明文通常会先 define a concept 或 introduce a topic more generally)。News articles 的第一段必须回答 'what',而不是 'why I think' 或 'let me explain what X is'。

说明文则 focus on explaining,不涉及 different parties' positions。新闻的 objectivity 要求 present who is involved 和 what they say。

这种 'work in progress' 的 presentation 是新闻的特点。议论文会 build toward a clear conclusion 或 call to action,说明文会 systematically explain 直到读者 fully understand the topic。但新闻报道经常 end with uncertainty 或 ongoing debates,因为它 reflects reality as it is,not as simplified or resolved。

这个 ending 区别于议论文的 persuasive conclusion(会 strongly advocate 某个 position)和说明文的 summary(会 recap key concepts explained)。新闻报道的 conclusion 通常是 practical 或 forward-looking 的,给读者 context for what to do 或 what to watch,而不是试图 convince 或 complete an explanation。

没有 clear thesis to prove(议论文必需),没有 systematic concept breakdown(说明文必需),而是 present what's known, what's disputed, who's involved, and what readers can do。这个 holistic structure 是 news reporting 的 signature。
