In a small laboratory at the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Vladimir Mironov has been working for a decade to grow meat. A developmental biologist and tissue engineer, Dr. Mironov is one of only a few scientists worldwide involved in bioengineering "cultured" meat. It's a product he believes could help solve future global food crises resulting from shrinking amounts of land available for growing meat the old-fashioned way. "Growth of cultured meat is also under way in the Netherlands," Mironov told Reuters in an interview, "but in the United States, it is science in search of funding and demand."

The new National Institute of Food and Agriculture won't fund it, the National Institute of Health won't fund it, and NASA funded it only briefly, Mironov said. "It's classic disruptive technology," Mironov said. "Bringing any new technology on the market, on average, costs $1 billion. We don't even have $1 million."

Director of the Advanced Tissue Biofabrication Center in the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology at the medical university, Mironov now primarily conducts research on tissue engineering, or growing, of human organs. "There's an unpleasant factor when people find out meat is grown in a lab. They don't like to associate technology with food," said Nicholas Genovese, a visiting scholar in cancer cell biology. "But there are a lot of products that we eat today that are considered natural that are produced in a similar manner," Genovese said.

  1. P1

A Decade of Cultured Meat Research Meets a Funding Wall

Dr. Mironov is bioengineering cultured meat to address future food crises, but the technology currently lacks sufficient funding and market demand in the U.S.

    第1段 是整篇报道的 foundation paragraph,它完成了三个关键任务:建立 subject(Dr. Mironov)、定义 core technology(cultured meat)、以及亮出全文的 central conflict(技术 potential vs. 资金 shortage)。

  2. P2

A Disruptive Technology Starved of Institutional Funding

Cultured meat research in the U.S. is severely underfunded, as major institutions refuse to support it, and the gap between available resources and the cost of commercialization is enormous.

  3. P3

Public Perception: The Invisible Barrier Beyond Funding

Beyond funding challenges, cultured meat faces public psychological resistance due to its lab origins, though scholars argue that the perceived boundary between 'natural' and 'lab-produced' food is largely illusory.

Why does Dr. Mironov believe cultured meat could help address future food crises?

    • A Because it has already replaced livestock farming in the United States.
    • B Because Dutch scientists have made it cheaper than ordinary meat.
    • C Because it could reduce dependence on land-intensive conventional meat production.
    • D Because it can be produced without scientists or laboratory equipment.
    • E Because global demand for it has already secured ample funding.
    • F Because it is intended mainly to improve human organ transplantation.

该项准确承接了人物的 believe,并把原文中 shrinking amounts of land available for growing meat the old-fashioned way 进行同义概括:land-intensive conventional meat production 对应 old-fashioned way, reduce dependence 对应以新技术缓解传统生产受限。

What does Mironov's comparison of funding figures mainly illustrate?

    • A It shows that the technology has already earned $1 billion in market revenue.
    • B It proves that NASA remains the project's principal financial supporter.
    • C It suggests that food research receives more support than medical research.
    • D It illustrates the enormous gap between commercialization costs and available funding.
    • E It indicates that one million dollars is sufficient to launch the technology.
    • F It confirms that public demand is growing faster than production capacity.

Bringing any new technology on the market 对应 commercialization costs, costs $1 billion 与 We don't even have $1 million 共同构成 enormous gap。

Nicholas Genovese concern

What concern about lab-grown meat does Nicholas Genovese identify?

    • A People are concerned that similar products are not commonly eaten today.
    • B People object to using human organs in food production.
    • C People doubt that cancer biologists understand food science.
    • D People believe that all technologically produced foods are unsafe.
    • E People may reject it because they dislike associating food with laboratory technology.
    • F People are unwilling to fund research on regenerative medicine.

该项忠实概括了 find out meat is grown in a lab 后的 unpleasant factor,以及 people don't like to associate technology with food。

这个 lead paragraph 介绍了 Dr. Mironov 在 Medical University of South Carolina 的 laboratory 里 working for a decade 来 grow meat,他是少数几位从事 bioengineering cultured meat 的 scientists 之一,他 believes 这项技术能 help solve future global food crises,因为 land available for growing meat 正在 shrinking,同时他提到 the Netherlands 也在进行类似 research,但在 the United States 这是 science in search of funding and demand

作为新闻报道的 opening,这个意群 establishes 了整篇文章的 main subject 和 context,介绍了 who(Dr. Mironov)、what(cultured meat research)、where(South Carolina)、why(solve food crises),同时通过 contrasting the Netherlands and the U.S.

这个意群 specifies the funding crisis,列举了 three major institutions(National Institute of Food and Agriculture, National Institute of Health, NASA)都 won't fund or only briefly funded 这个 project,Mironov 用 disruptive technology 来 characterize 这项技术,并 quantifies the challenge 通过对比 bringing new technology to market 平均 costs $1 billion 而他们 don't even have $1 million,这种 stark numerical contrast 强化了 funding gap 的严重性

这个意群 serves as the elaboration section,它 takes the funding hint from the lead 并 develops it into concrete evidence,通过 listing specific institutions 和 providing numerical data 来 substantiate the claim,这种 factual elaboration 是新闻报道 body paragraphs 的典型 function,它 adds depth and credibility to the opening statement,让 readers understand the severity of the challenge mentioned in the lead

这个意群 shifts focus 到 Mironov 的 current primary research(human organ tissue engineering)和 introduces a new voice—Nicholas Genovese,一位 visiting scholar,他 addresses the public perception issue,指出 people don't like to associate technology with food 这个 unpleasant factor,但他同时 argues 很多我们今天 consider natural 的 products 其实 are produced in a similar manner,这个意群 broadens the discussion from pure funding problem 到 cultural and psychological barriers

作为新闻报道的 closing section,这个意群 provides additional context and perspective,它 expands beyond the immediate funding crisis 来 explore underlying social factors, introducing a second expert voice(Genovese)adds credibility and offers a different analytical angle,这种 multi-perspective approach 是 in-depth news reporting 的特征,它 helps readers understand that the challenge 不仅是 financial 的,也涉及 public acceptance,为整个 story 增添 depth and complexity

MAIN IDEA ·

主旨信号词 could help solve P1 won't fund P2 disruptive technology P2 don't even have P2 unpleasant factor P3

MAIN IDEA ·

比如 'Growth of cultured meat is also under way in the Netherlands' 这样的 direct speech 让读者能够 directly hear 科学家的声音,增强了 credibility 和 authenticity。

信号词 told Reuters said in an interview according to stated commented remarked noted explained revealed

首先 identify key stakeholders,然后 extract 能够 reveal their perspective 的 statements。 仿写模版:'According to [专家身份], "[direct quote]". This [observation/statement] highlights

    P1 P2

文章用了 concrete numbers 来 quantify 问题的 severity,比如 'costs $1 billion' 和 'don't even have $1 million' 形成的 stark contrast。这种 numerical specificity 让 funding gap 变得 tangible and dramatic。

1 billion $1 million costs funded a decade only a few won't fund

避免 data dumping,每个 figure 都要 serve a purpose。 [Action/phenomenon] costs/requires [large number], yet [subject] [only has/lacks] [small number], revealing

    P1 P3

文章开头用 background information 来 establish context,介绍 Dr. Mironov 的 professional identity ('developmental biologist and tissue engineer') 和 research duration ('a decade')。

信号词 has been working for a decade is one of only A developmental biologist Director of at the Medical University

仿写: 写作 background sections 时要 balance brevity with completeness。Include credentials 来 establish authority,提供 timeline 来 show commitment 或 development,用 comparative context (如 'one of only a few') 来 reveal significance。建议 structure:'At [location], [人物 + 头衔] has been [action] for [time period]. A [专业身份], [name] is [comparative positioning] involved in [领域].' 确保每个 background detail 都 serves to enhance understanding 或 establish credibility。

    P1 P2

文章运用了 sharp contrasts 来 amplify the problem,最显著的是 financial contrast ('$1 billion' vs. 'don't even have $1 million'),还有 geographical contrast (Netherlands 'under way' vs. U.S. 'science in search of funding')。这种 juxtaposition 让 disparity 变得 striking and memorable。对主旨的作用是:通过 stark comparisons 将 funding shortage 的 severity dramatically 呈现,让读者 immediately grasp the challenge 的 magnitude,同时 international comparison 暗示了 U.S.

信号词 but while yet however although whereas in contrast on the other hand vs. compared to

仿写: Creating effective contrasts 要 select genuinely opposing elements that reveal something meaningful。Use parallel structure 来 enhance the comparison 的 impact。建议 pattern:'While/Although [situation A] [action/status], [situation B] [contrasting action/status].' 或用数字对比:'[Action] requires [large amount], yet [subject] has [small amount].' 确保 contrast 不只是 stylistic,而是 serves to illuminate a problem 或 make an argument。

    P2 P3

文章使用了 neutral, factual language 来 present information,比如列举 funding sources ('The new National Institute...won't fund it') 用 straightforward listing 而非 emotional appeals。这种 objective reporting style 呈现了 systematic rejection 的 reality without sensationalism。

信号词 won't fund funded only briefly primarily conducts research is grown in are produced in

仿写: Maintain objectivity 要 avoid evaluative adjectives 和 emotional language。Use factual verbs ('stated', 'reported', 'indicated') 而非 charged ones ('claimed', 'insisted')。建议 structure:'[Organization/entity] [neutral verb] [factual information].' 记住 objectivity 不是 lack of impact,而是 letting facts speak for themselves。如:'[Institution A] [action], [Institution B] [action], and [Institution C] [action].' 这种 accumulation creates effect without editorializing。

    P3

文章通过 Genovese 的话引入了 implicit questions about public perception:'They don't like to associate technology with food.' 这个 observation 实际上 raises the question of 'why?' 这种 problem-solution structure 引导读者 follow a logical progression。

But However They don't like there's an unpleasant factor when people find out

仿写: Using this technique 要 identify potential skepticism 或 counterarguments,然后 explicitly address them。Structure 建议:'[Present challenge/objection]. [Transitional word] [counter-perspective or explanation].' 或:'People [concern/reaction]. However/But [contextualizing information].' 关键是 acknowledge the concern genuinely 再 provide nuance 或 reframing,而非 dismiss it。这creates balanced narrative that respects reader intelligence。

    P1
Growth of cultured meat is also under way in the Netherlands, but in the United States, it is science in search of funding and demand.

转折类 but however yet nevertheless nonetheless whereas while

表面上看 both countries 两国都在 conduct research 开展研究,但 but 一词后面 reveal 揭示美国的研究处于 searching for support 寻求支持的 困境 predicament。

    P2
The new National Institute of Food and Agriculture won't fund it, the National Institute of Health won't fund it, and NASA funded it only briefly

情态词 won't wouldn't refuse to decline to fail to unable to cannot

这段通过 enumerate 列举三个 major institutions 主要机构——National Institute of Food and Agriculture、National Institute of Health 和 NASA 的 funding refusal 资金拒绝,传递出一个强烈的 underlying message 隐含信息:培养肉研究在美国遭遇 systematic institutional neglect 系统性机构忽视。

    P2
Bringing any new technology on the market, on average, costs $1 billion. We don't even have $1 million.

强调词 even not even barely merely only just hardly

    P2
    It's classic disruptive technology

    P3
There's an unpleasant factor when people find out meat is grown in a lab. They don't like to associate technology with food

Don't like to associate technology with food Mironov 在 第1段 中提到的 in search of funding and demand 寻求资金和需求,这里的 demand 需求问题得到了 explanation 解释——public perception 公众认知是 limiting factor 限制因素,这使 funding challenge 资金挑战变得更加 complex 复杂。

    P3
But there are a lot of products that we eat today that are considered natural that are produced in a similar manner

But However Yet Actually In fact In reality The truth is

Vladimir Mironov' 这个 specific individual,'Medical University of South Carolina' 这个 specific location,以及 'grow meat' 这个 specific action,这是典型的 news lead 写法。

这篇文章中 'Mironov told Reuters'、'Mironov said'、'Genovese said' 这些 reporting structures 是 journalistic writing 的标志。

议论文通常围绕 author's central argument 展开,说明文则是 systematic explanation of one topic。

而新闻报道需要建立 temporal context,告诉读者 what has been happening 和 what is currently the case。文章中 'has been working for a decade'、'is also under way'、'won't fund it' 这些 tense choices 都在强调 ongoing situations 和 recent developments,这是 news writing 的 temporal characteristic。

这个 integrated approach 的核心在于 news reporting 的本质:它是 objective documentation of current events through multiple sources,而不是 author's subjective analysis 或 systematic explanation。这篇文章完美展现了这些特征:具体的 scientist 在具体的 lab 做具体的 research, facing specific challenges,各方 stakeholders 发表 different statements,整个 narrative 都在 presenting what is happening rather than arguing what should happen。
